My phone works perfect. My gps tracks perfectly through the woods and in my house I get 15' accuracy when running a GPS test. My phone doesn't randomly shutdown. Actually both of my captivates have the same lack of issues.
Wait, nope I did have one issue. I removed GTalk after I rooted and flashed Cognition to fix it, without enabling lagfix.
Am I alone in this? Are there other people who don't have problems?

thumbs up!

I think you're in denial or you just aren't OCD enough to realize the phone does have flaws. Mostly due to laziness in design by Samsung, not enough testing. I have an inside source saying the entire Samsung Development team was frying on mushrooms when working on this...
After Paragon RC4 fixed my GPS issue I can't think of any problem my phone has and I hammer away on it all day. I have build 1008.

1 shut down when I first bought the phone. Going on 3 months (of ownership) now, with no issues. Of course I suppose a lot of the credit goes to Cognition 3.04 for being a great stable rom
yeah my gps is great... if im walking.. not if im driving.
no shutdown issues though.
had denied access though when trying to use "usb storage mode" returned phone. no issues with new one except gps...
I've been very fortunate as well. GPS isn't perfect, but got me around downtown Philadelphia perfectly just yesterday.
Phone is rooted, with stock rom. Removed AT&T bloatware. Using K-9 for mail, Dolphin HD for browser and of course advanced task killer.
No shutdowns, battery gets me through the day. Worst thing is the new Android Market, which is much slower than the previous versions.
I am a Samsung fan, having progressed from a Sammy flip phone, to the Blackjack, to the Jack, to my Captivate, so I am a bit biased. Folks in the office have several Verizon models, including an older HTC model, an Incredible, and a Droid 2. Each one has a few quirks, so take it for what it's worth

Never had any issues here, either.
My GPS works perfectly too; I get 1.2 m accuracy in my house which is surrounded by trees . . . but only since I started using a TomTom Wireless MKII (bluetooth) receiver.
It's funny how the MKII which was designed and built 5 years ago can get a lock in my house in a few seconds when the Captivate's built-in GPS always takes 248 seconds to lock under better conditions (outside). I wonder if that metal case back is a problem . . . hmmmmm

you are aware that using a task killer is a waste of time... right? it is totally unneeded on android.
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
So, honestly, I've had more issues with custom roms than with the phone at stock. I've had weird mass storage problems, GPS lock quality, force closes, strange wifi lock ups that require a reboot or a complete dump of programs in ram, data network loss until a reboot, just to name the major ones.
With the stock software, even though there was a crap ton of bloat, the phone worked. Sure, there was random lag, and the GPS took a little longer to lock(up to 1min), but when it did, it never had issues with maps or navigation like it does now, where the program thinks I'm driving in a river, or suddenly changed directions going 80 on the interstate. The mass storage worked better also, as did BT audio.
I gained speed and customization with the roms from this community, but it was essentially trading one issue for another.

Your GPS works cause you're in the woods. Try skyscrapers... then you'll have a fun time with that GPS unit.
That's good that you like it though. Never let someone convince you its broken if it ain't...

You're not alone.
GPS has worked for me from day one (I bought it on launch day), literally. My first full day with the phone I flew to another state, had no clue about the area and it got me everywhere I needed to go.
any gps receiver wll have issues with multipath. There is nothing that can fix, actual yes, remove tall building which are close to each other
My original phone worked fine at first, then developed the random shutdown issue. It was bone stock. I tried rooting, ROMing, etc to fix it, but it still shutdown.
I exchanged it for a "refrubed replacement" 12-31-2010. I left the replacement stock for almost a month to make sure it was going to work right before I did any mods. The shutdown issue was gone, and the GPS worked great.
I was hesitant to flash it cuz it was working and stable. But I had already had a taste of custom roms so I couldn't bear leaving it stock forever.
Flashed different roms, different kernels, numerous different modems etc.... So far so good.
No issues yet. But now that I said something it'll probably die on me tomorrow!
I do live in a small city(Fayetteville NC which is a small town compared to Philly) but driving in Raleigh and Dallas I don't have any issue. (bought my phone in dallas) Driving or walking or running it just works. Alsk I get lock in less then 20 seconds which is pretty average for a lot of gps devices I have used. (well not the military PLGR which seemed to take 30minutes to lock)
I thought about it and there is one thing I do with a custom rom I didn't do with stock: live background.
Cognition was ok but now I'm running Phoenix Rising.
Great dev community in XDA all around, and if I hadn't removed GTalk I would never have tried one of these roms.
And for playing video or media I get issues with 1080 files but everything else works good enough for a phone. Yeah a phone, compared to an Ipod touch or Zune Hd or a computer it isn't as good but I also can't make phone calls on some or fit the other in my pocket which makes this Captivate a great device.
Right on about the multipath! I wonder how many GPS complaints are from this.
Heh like listening to the radio or watching old school pre-HD tv in a city.
The only issue I had with stock cappy is it would not connect to pc. I tried every driver under the sun, on xp, vista, and even bought windows 7. Nada. My wifes would connect immediately. So I just made att swap it out for a new one and it works perfectly. I really didn't care until I got tired of waiting on froyo and decided to flash. I wanted a backup on my pc so I called att and did a swap. 3 days later I flashed my first rom. Now my OTA download rate is faster than my dsl, so I'm sticking it to att by dl'ing over their network.
My wife and son also have Captivates, both stock. They got them in November 2010.
My wife's has been fine for the most part but has shutdown maybe 3 times over the months. She has opted not exchange it yet since the shutdowns have been very rare. Her GPS works fine but is a little slow to lock.
My son's just started shutting down over the last week or so. It's to the point we are probably going to have to take it in for an exchange.
Hello, I'm on my third Mesmerize from UScellular. It is a very buggy phone. The most unreliable phone I've ever owned. The alarm app fails often, the email app usually has to be force closed and reopened to check for new email. It obviously misses calls often, and even can't send texts, and misses some some texts as well. I hate the phone. I got the new EE19 radio update last tuesday and Friday it missed a call, and Saturday it missed two calls back to back, and couldn't send a text message for about 10 minutes . I took it back to the store, and was very upset. I thought they would give me a different phone all together... hopefully something that works. But no, they are doing a warranty replacement .
Should I sell the phone, and get better brand? If I learn how to flash ROM's and change the rom and kernel will it be more reliable? Will I still have the missed call issue with the EE19 radio and a custom ROM, or would I need to try a new radio as well? Any thoughts, tips, advice, pointers would be greatly welcomed!!!

I wonder if part of it is a reception issue. If you've gone through three phones, and each time you're having not just missed calls but text problems also, that suggests to me it's not getting the kind of signal it needs, at least for the phone network portion of it.
That said, I think it's entirely worth asking: have you done ANYTHING at all to customize it? Rooted it, loaded a custom ROM, recovery, kernel, radio, anything? Has your e-mail and alarm app broken that same way on all three phones? If you're having these problems right out of the box with ZERO customization on your part, then it's possible you've just been monumentally unlucky with which particular phones you've gotten; they say each specific unit can function differently compared to another as far as performance benchmarks and which ROMs work and which don't.
I question if a custom ROM would solve your problem, or just introduce more. I suspect it's possible either way in my opinion. You could try them with the understanding they may not do a thing for you---or may make the phone perform even worse.
I personally haven't had a problem with mine. I happen to like the phone, especially with Odin/Heimdall to go back to a stock configuration when all else fails (and I don't run a TouchWiz ROM, but even then those weren't THAT bad). Certainly no missed texts, and I didn't really notice any missed calls either. To me, that means you're either (A) getting lemons, (B) have a reception issue, or (C) are messing with your phone and aren't telling us. I'm cool with giving the benefit of the doubt on C.
If you're really motivated to get it figured out, try keeping a journal with where you are, what time it happened, and what failed and how.
Thank you for the reply.
The phone is 100% stock. This one has not been rooted or compromised in anyway. I did root my first one, and tried to install a lagfix, unsuccessfully. But then reverted back to stock. The first one ONLY had the missed call issue, which Samsung tried to address with the new EE19 radio update. But they took my good Mes, and make me swap it out within my 30 days for another "hoping it would fix the missing call problem". I knew it wouldn't because thousands of other users were having the same issues.
The second handset is the one with all the issues, the stock alarm app force closes during the night and wont go off in the am (twice) or when I turn the alarm off at night it still goes off in the am. The email app has to be force closed all the time and re-opened. It does drop a lot of calls, and is cuts in and out during calls. Reception does seem to be a major issue, but everyone else's phones work fine. We have several uscellular phones here, and a co-worker with a Droid 2 global from verizon (his signal strength is MUCH better than mine). I'm hoping its a broken antennae. The first one worked flawlessly in the same locations (before the leaves sprouted though).
-I've had many other issues too, like the screen going black and unresponsive except for the status bar. No buttons work, but it allows me to power down, BUT WILL NOT TURN BACK ON without battery removal. Other bugs, and issues too.
On this second handset I have the new EE19 update, which seems to be exacerbating my problems. I didn't have much for texting issues pre-update, and now post update get a lot of them. Maybe the EE19 radio is not as good? I have not actually received the third phone yet, but have no confidence in it now.
I don't have a computer programming degree or background, and am not familiar with flashing custom roms, and linux and all of that. But I'm trying to learn, and may try some different radios, and different roms. I'm interested in gingerbread for EE19, but its hard to search on here. I also want a voodoo lagfix.
The Mes does have a pretty weak antenna from what I have seen. There are a lot of people that have said they get worse reception with it then they did with a similar USCC phone (Desire for example).
I live in the middle of bumfuct and I have some of the missed call, text issues though not horrible and as with ee19 as I did with ec10. Depending on how I hold the phone I can go from full reception to no reception, same thing room to room. Also, there are times where I'll get no interwebs access without a battery pull and restart, like it won't reconnect after so long. If I was to guess though I would say its more of a reception issue than an overall phone issue. I have been on ec01 and the issues remained the same, but I like my mes, especially in comparison to the acclaim I had before it, though the acclaim did have better overall reception everything else about was "the gay". Have you tried different alarm clock, email apps from the market? Maybe that would help. I had no issues with my blackberry curve before the acclaim but it wasnt nearly as fun as the androids I've had. I'd say if the new apps don't help, maybe try a different phone, lg, htc, blackberry, there is lots of options out there.

I agree that it does sound like a reception issue. Problem is, I live in the downtown of a college city, and am supposed to have full 100% reception. I work in My state Capital, and once again, full reception. My other work location also has full reception according to their coverage maps. I think they need to issue me a real phone, and not just more Mesmerizes.

ummm .... didn't you choose the phone?
Not really. They only had two options at the time. The samsung mesmerize with 7hr battery life, and the HTC Desire with a 2.5hr battery life. I made the logical choice.
I would say at this point make them give you another mez and give it a try. Unfortunately, my experience with this phone and the belief project in general, they are taking “swapped" phones and recycling them back into the pool. I guess they are banking on someone else getting the phone and not realizing its a flaming hot mess.
I had to get 2 swaps done to get one that works.
The problems you described are very unusual for the phone in my experience.
Get one more swap, then get the store to apply the EE19 update before you register it. Do a PRL update after that (*228) and you should be good to go. I'm going on 2 weeks with a stock EE19 from the shop. I rooted with S1C, been running great since I got it.

So where did you make up that information from?
LaTuFu,
I believe you are absolutely correct! They do take their returned phones and ship them right back out to unsuspecting customers. Mine arrived today with packing tape all over the screen, and a scratched up camera lens. What kind of warranty replacement is that? So much for Uscellular having "the best customer satisfaction and network satisfaction of any national carrier".
We switched from T-Mobile to ATT and got 2 Inspire 4g's and one Infuse.
Now my wife is hating her Inspire because she says the call quality is terrible. She can barely understand the person she is talking to, and if she turns the volume up it gets worse and worse.
She does not think it is the ATT network because it happens no matter where she is, and is not sudden or sporadic. She says it is every call all the time.
Any ideas before we take the 2 Inspires back?
You have a couple of options. The first would be to divorce her. (Just kidding.) The call quality is good on these phones. It is possible that you may have received a defective unit. The second option would be to exchange the phone for another and check the quality on the second unit, which is what I would recommend you try. It should not be happening on every call. There is nothing you could really try until you root your phone and test different fixes, but you should not need anything right now on a phone you have not changed yet.
I am in agreeance with the above poster, it sounds like you may have a defective handset, in all likelihood you should be able to exchange it, sooner than later and see if it works better. The other issue could be your area just has horrendous service for AT&T as that can happen as well.
Thanks guys, I agree we need to exchange it sooner than later, I am just worried because both Inspires we have have the same issue. I dont think it is the service because my Infuse is fine, and we have an iPhone 3gs that is fine in the same areas.
If both Inspires have the same issue it is possible they may have come from a bad batch. It is known to have very good call quality, and on certain roms you just have to apply a patch to fix sound issues. Normally, HTC build quality surpasses Samsung build quality. It may be worth it to go to a different store and try an exchange there to see how that goes. If your Infuse is working well, so should the Inspires.

Well just because my son really likes his Inspire I went ahead and rooted his and installed the Android Revolution HD ROM. Here is what I tested/noticed:
With the downgraded ROM that is installed during the Rooting process the problem remains, and I was unable to use wifi. It would connect to the wifi, but could not browse the internet.
Once I installed Android Revolution HD I could connect and wifi was fine, but the phone signal was weak. So I installed the linked radio from the first page of the ROM and it went back to a strong signal, but not really any different than stock.
I am convinced that the issue is the radio, not the physical device, so I think I just need to find the right one.
If you are using the M2 radio that is recommended for the AR rom, then you should already have the correct Ril files that match that radio because they are included in the rom. The downgrade rom that is used during rooting needs to have a newer radio flashed in order to get it working. If you are getting any kind of tinny audio quality then there is a patch in the first post that fixes sound quality issues that a lot of people get. These patches are used for most of the European based DHD roms.

I have owned many AT&T phones, and the Inspire has one of the best sounding calls I have ever had. I would agree that it is probably a bad batch of phones, or something damaged the phones when they were shipped to the store. I have rooted/M2 Radio, and am running LeeDrOiD. This is by far the best phone I have owned. I am sorry that your wife is having issues, but i would definately try exchanging it for another Inspire before giving up.
i have no problems with call quality except for speaker
when i put phone on speaker the other end could never hear me
i would suggest putting ur sons phone back to stock, and taking them both to ATT and reproduce the issue for one of the reps and say see listen the phone sounds like total crap please fix this and have them replace both phones. do not leave the store until both of ur phones are working correctly
I upgraded using the LG tool and everything went fine. Setup the ROM from scratch and all was well but then I kept having these issues so I shelved the G2X and went back to Sensation UNTIL T-mobile released what I thought would be a newer official build.
The fact that they are putting out V21E as the official GB build is downright sad and pathetic. After many months of promising an update they can't even get a release out there that's not busted. I know it is possible but it seems only HTC and perhaps Samsung know how to write software...my old Droid Incredible, friends Evo 4G and now Sensation are rock solid and everything just works. Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy variants also just mainly work.
I had these issues for the 24 hours I used the G2X with V21E - I got fed up and stopped using it but I'm sure there are others.
- Several times phone rang/vibrated due to incoming call so I answered the call which worked BUT the phone kept vibrating like it was still ringing even while I'm talking to the other person. Only solution is to hang up call and call back. Doesn't happen every time but happened quite often.
- Bluetooth is buggy as hell. Sometimes a device that's paired won't connect unless I powercycle the BT on the phone.
-- I was listening to music once with A2DP headset and a call came in. I answered the call and everything was great. I hung up the call and now no BT audio would come through the headset or even the phone speaker no matter what I did. Turn off BT/turn on, etc. Only solution was to powercycle
--Later on was using the phone, connected my paired A2DP headset to the G2X and almost instantly the phone screen turned off and it locked up. Had to pull the battery
- Weird issue with apps like (edit: Google's podcast app not HTC) Listen. Will play for a while and then all of a sudden stop playing and nothing I can do will get it to play again unless I uninstall/reinstall the app. Never happened on Froyo or CM7.
- Gets very warm - battery app showed the temp being well over 35 degrees celcius most times I looked and I wasn't even using the phone much.
- Was using the Google reader to read articles and all of a sudden the phone started slowing down and then it just froze with the screen on. Nothing I did would get a response from it. Power + vol up didn't work. had to pull the battery.
I mean this is freaking ridiculous. I have the Sensation setup with the exact same apps, launcher, settings, everything and I have ZERO issues. This is simply crappy software and LG should be ashamed.
FWIW, CM7 latest nightlies I never had ANY of these problems but A2DP doesn't work on CM7 so can't use it daily. Once A2DP starts working on CM7 I might give it another shot.
I'm definitely done with LG for a while.

Weird, I had reboots and SOD problems in Froyo but otherwise I had NO other issues in Froyo - when the phone wasn't rebooting or turned off it worked perfectly. This GB build has way more problems for me than Froyo.
Solid here..... Not a bad update imo
Same here I haven't experienced any of these problems, not even in Frito either. The update overall has done it all for me. I would try reinstalling the update again if I were you

I did, note how I said I set it up from scratch. There is BOUND to be issues with this because the kernel is the same as froyo - many of the problems were caused by the kernel and since that hasn't changed, how would the issues be fixed? CM7 might fix issues because it's a different kernel.
My phone is now freezing up!!! WTH! Three times since the update in less than 12 hours. I wanted to call Tmobile customer service to cancel my Value Plan i switched to a day earlier but couldn't. I had to remove the battery and reset the phone before making my call.
I told them I didn't want to spend $200 for the migration fee and then be stuck in a new 2 year contract with this G2X phone and pay a $200 if I leave that Value Plan contract or spend full price on a phone to replace this junk. I went back to my 1500 mins, unlim text, 5 gb data for $79.99 plus %15 discount on that. The person I spoke with was surprised this new update was having issues. She knew this phone had bugs because her friend had this phone. She also knew they took it off their website and just brought it back with Gingerbread.
She said she will make a note in my account to give me a full upgrade credit because I am on my second phone and I told her that I was going to leave to Sprint! Hopefully my phone wont cause me to smash it before the Samsung Hercules comes out on Sept 26.

I can't help to think that theres some app people are installing that's causing some of these issues. My phone has been perfect in operation, but froyo was great too.
People need to understand that the tegra 2 has some compatibility issues as well with some apps.
Uninstall everything 3rd party, use the phone for a day and see what probs you have.

No problems so far. I love GB. My bluetooth now syncs with my radio which it wasn't doing with Froyo.
i've had none of these issues. i have had issues like this in the past with a bad flash.
Well I'm getting a replacement G2X that either will come with the update (doubt it) or I'll use OTA to get the update so if after that it doesn't work. I give up.

OK.
I hope you have better luck with your new phone. The Sensation is a piece of garbage according to many. It is all up to luck apparently. It is weird how some have no issues and some have continual issues.
I'm starting to think I have bad hardware too, I'm having more problems with GB than I did with Froyo!
What did you tell them to get a warranty exchange? I was thinking of calling and just overwhelming them with info.
Just worried the replacement device could be worse!
I can't adjust the damn touch key brightness. It is making me crazy. Also the screen is not as responsive as it was with Froyo.
and of course the battery still sucks, but apparently android is a flawed system that just sucks battery for no reason at all. I hope the google/android folks get their stuff together one of these days. I really miss my HD2 battery life. You would think a bigger battery and newer operating system would be more efficient, but crappy battery life seems to be the norm. The tmobile guber that sold me my phones assured me I would get the same life out of the battery, but he was very wrong.

This phone and how tmobile handled it in my situation left a foul taste in my mouth forcing me to switch to Sprint and the HTC EVO 4G. So far its been a happy switch, my phone hasn't locked up, no reboots, doesn't overheat and battery lasted me about 30 hours with moderate use (web browsing for about 30mins, 1hr phone call, and about 2hrs overall on xda) also had WiFi on plus Bluetooth.
Sadly I lost 4G data since Sprint doesn't have any 4G towers in my area yet. But @ $110 a month for unlimited everything and no data throttling it was a good move, plus nice to have signal while at home. WiFi calling worked whenever it felt like so it was no more reliable than plain cell service.

Been contemplating for a while whether to post this as it will come off as rather trollish. Had my Infuse for over a year now. When I first got it I noticed there were some "issues". I remained patient hoping or thinking maybe when GB was released it would improve. It did not. Later I needed to root this phone and came here, found a ROM that had all the AT&T junk stripped out. Phone worked better, but still had these issues.
I got to the point that I knew I would never again purchase either a Samsung phone or Android. Did not know what the culprit was. Just recently I had the chance to really take a look at an HTC EVO, and I realized that Samsung is the problem, not Android.
Number one issue is that this phone is sluggish, and sometimes unresponsive. I will touch whatever button and get that vibrating acknowledgement, but nothing happens. I will be in the app menu and wish to exist and the home button just does not respond.
Yesterday I missed a call because the bloody phone just did not respond, even though I touched the answer button. Other times I just can not make a call. I dial number, and the phone just sits there doing nothing. Eventually I just pull out the battery and restart the phone to make a simple bloody call. I had a HTC WinMo phone for years and never once experienced this. No matter how farked the OS could get with some app or whatever, the phone function always worked.
I do not run a lot of apps, and recently have experienced these issues with almost literally no apps installed. I will then add something like GO taskmanger just to confirm that the unresponsive behavior is not due to some app taking up memory/CPU etc..
Sorry for the long post, but I am at my wits end with this bloody phone. The fact that I miss calls when the **** phone is right in my hand is unacceptable. So before placing this phone in a box filled with C4 and shooting this to the moon, hoping that maybe a solution is out there.
p.s. I have 2 Infuse in use, both have the same issue.
What firmware are you running?
Is it the same firmware on both phones?
What is the launcher?
Have you tried a different modem?
Are you using a battery saver like juice defender?
Are you using an ad blocker?
Are you using a specific kernel? Oc? Uv?
Need for specific info

You know, for the rather lengthy post, you really have not explained any detail about your issue.. You have a generic 'I have an issue, the Infuse sucks' post and its not going to help anyone resolve your issue. I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that you have 2 infuses having the SAME EXACT ISSUE. Yes, there will be times when you get a defective phone or it isnt working up to your standards, but to have 2 defective phones with the same defect? You need to play the lottery. Also, i suggest you send the phones back. It sounds like youve already made your mind up and have pretty much bashed the samsung infuse in that entire post. The same samsung infuse that myself, and plenty of other people live with day to day and have absolutely 0 complaints.
I will give you $20.00 a piece for them!!!!

Simple . Hack it and put cm7 on it if you really need speed. Maybe its your screen protecter. Wipe the screen off. Cm9 can be sluggish, for speed go to miui on gingerbread or cm7
Id be willing to buy one of the infuses
Trust me...sounds like you got two defective units...which like Scott, I find hard to believe...but hey its possible-idk when you got hem.but if it hasn't been a year then put them back to stock with gtgs unbrick and file a warranty claim with Samsung...the infuse is a great phone and I never had the problem you described...I do have a question though...did you get them both at the same time? Cause I don't see why you would get a second if your first was having problems
Anyways...if you wanna sell one hmu...I may buy one depending on the price and if I can get the money (I think I already may have one lined up for $170 just need to get the money)

Never really had any problems with samsungs beside the only issue I have ever had with ALL Samsung phones .. They have the worst RF signal/strength out of any company! I miss the days of my old Nokia RF ..

One is using the GB posted by jscott30 here, the other is the plain official Samsung GB via Kies. Mine is then UCLB3

2.6.35.7-I997RUXK53-CL366622 for mine (GB rooted ROM) the other would be whatever came with the official Samsung GB release.

Again this has been a recurring problem since purchase, and during this time I have had stock Froyo, rooted Froyo ROM, GB update, and for one now a the GB rooted ROM.
When the slow to unresponsiveness occurs there does not appear to be any specific cause. Prior to updating to the rooted GB I had used GO Taskmanager, and long before that some other app I long since forgot the name of. Point was that they had shown that neither CPU was excessive, or memory was used up. Both phones have data services disabled and are strictly Wifi only. There are no tasks or extra programs run in the background (though did install Connectbot today). I no longer use any Live wallpaper. After updating to the rooted GB I left the phone in that state (no software installed) for a week or so, and the problem still occured.
This occurs when calling or answering calls, but as previously posted occurs sometimes just opening the Applications menu as an example. So it is not a specific task or program that is slow or unresponsive. Earlier this evening I got a call, slide the bar across to answer and the screen just hung there for a few moments. This time it was at least not long enough that I missed the call. When the call was done I looked and there simply was nothing running on the phone. No apps, no web browser or mail, in fact I was not even connected to the wifi (I have data 3G/4G service disabled on the phone).
are you completely wiping before every flash youve done? have you tried a complete wipe and start from fresh?

Task manager is NOT the best app to tell you what is running in the background.
Maps and other location apps may not be listed but will consume resourse that can be the cause of your lag.
The fact that stopping wallpaper or live wall paper off alleviate the condition may suggest that the phone is running at max capacity. Steps to reduce the load improves it. Live wp, facebook, maps, stock email and other device manager from stock att was one of the first @#$% I took out on any rom I run.
Having a large amount of apps installed can also cause this lag. The OS may only be able to handle so many.
Have a poor signal at the time of the call may also be an issue, especially if both of your phones have this issue occasionally but not consistently.
Lock screen can also be a factor. Some sleep setting may also cause the phone to wake up poorly. I get around this by turning off my lock screen. On the call settings, you can also change the answering options so that it will override others and make it easy to answer.
On any firmware - stock or modded, after you have the phone running for an extended period of time without a reboot, you may start to see some lags. This may be across all devices. You may need to reboot it occasionally or boot into recovery and wipe the cache.
These issues may or not go away once you have a device with more power or resources..ex: dual or quad core, 1gb or 2gb ram etc..my guess is when a device has more power, programmers will come up with more resourse intensive apps that may hinder the phone as well.
Lastly, pay attention to your battery meter. As the power dips below 30%, there are steps taken by the OS to conserve the battery. This may give you lags as well..possibly one of the reason why it seems random also.
If you wanted to test out the lag issue due to background apps, go to settings/account and sync. turn off background data. You will retain the (radio) phone and text but there will be no email/facebook, weather, widgets/market/amazon etc updates unless you manually update them. If this runs smoothly but lags when you turn it back on, you can start the process of narrowing down your culprit.
