[Q]updating manually to ICS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

the only way i know is the recovery thing btw my phone isn't rooted ,r there any other easier methods?
thx in advance

All depends which phone you have.

There are a few methods, but they are all about the same difficulty. Read one of the stickies* on how to root your phone, then you can use clockworkmod recovery (available from the Android market) to flash whatever ICS ROM you like. I'm using Mark Vis' version.

You can update to ics without rooting by just downloading the ota update and using the built in recovery to flash it. But you have to have the same phone Google sent the update for. I think it was the t-mo version.

simple question. I9020A rooted running ICS rom. Do I accept OTA update?

Hi there,
Since my phone is a I9020A on Fido I rooted and currently running CM9 ICS rom, should I accept any OTA update or do I have to manually install it through CWM?
No, it can screw up your device if you do it like that. Just do it manually like everyone is doing.

ROM:
Android 4.0.3 IML74k
Bootloader Version : I9020XXKL1 - Works with all GSM devices. Please check HERE to see if it will work on your device.
Radio - No Radio. Your favorite radio will work with 4.0.3
Root - DO NOT UPDATE SUPERUSER. Wait for proper ICS version. The current version will not ask or show permission is granted for apps that require root.
Do not update superuser yet until a new version for ICS comes out.
All apps that can be downloaded from market have been removed. If you can not see your missing apps in Android Market then download attached zip files.
Building new ROM from source now. Will be all pure android but for status bar widgets and enhanced power menu.
Follow me on Twitter for more updates and when my AOSP ROM will be released.
There is a patch for new Systemui.APK file that will show H when you have HSPA signal. It is attached to this post and can be loaded from recovery.

Only difference between odex and deodex is that deodex is for theming. Odex boots faster.... And if the radio you're using right bow is working properly you don't need to flash another radio

Ok so I flashed 2.3.6 back stock for OTA rom from the thread in this section and now for some odd reason I cant access my CWM. Whenever I try to it shows some box and triangle thing flashing
tried to reflash CWM using Rom Manager and kept getting an error.
Doh!
To the handful of people getting OTA update on i9020a, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get either:
a) name of ZIP file
b) URL of ZIP file
c) copy ZIP file and upload (should be in /cache folder I think)
(preferably all three)
Once you install it the file is deleted and you lost your chance, so please if you downloaded update don't apply until you get at least one of the above...but preferably all three, you would be a hero to all of us in this thread with i9020a wanting update. This is AT&T/Rogers model.

The OP states he is running CM9 Kangs... He isn't getting the update since he is not on stock -- I think he is just asking how to actually take the OTA when it comes.
I am on Fido too in Canada and I can assure you, I have not received the OTA for my I9020A yet... Once it is available for my I9020A, I will post all the information here (if the I9020A official OTA is not already posted, that is...)
if i flash back to stock with root will i still receive OTA on ns4g?? even if with a different kernal?

I think the kernel has to be stock as well.
I just downloaded OTARootKeeper app and have reverted completely back to stock; I am patiently waiting for the i9020A OTA.
Hopefully we get it soon.
I don't mind a little wait though... by then all the other bugs and such with SuperUser app will be figured out for ICS.

I downloaded Voodoo OTARootKeeper from the android market. The description of the program claims it should hide your root during the ota and according to the apps latest reviews, it works on this ics upgrade. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it works and hopefully the super user app from the market will be updated by then to handle ics.

Also, Superuser has been officially updated for ICS, so you don't really need to use OTARootKeeper. The new SU works just like before.

Make sure you have the latest superuser.zip and you have to flash it a few times.
I am in Kies and my current firmware is PDA:KJ7/PHONE:LE2/CSC:KJ7 (RWC) and if I click on Firmware Upgrade and Initialization I get a message saying SGH-I727R does not support initializing.
Am I doing something wrong? Can you get the update from Kies if your phone is root?
Thanks.
What is the build date of this Rogers ICS update?
If I'm on a ROM can I just go ahead and update via keis? Or so I have to reinstall an official build first?
Really not sure I want to revert back to TouchWiz from SKY ICS though, any comments on the Rogers build?
could someone grab the radio from this and make cwm flashable please ?

here's what I suggest since you debloated. Your bootloader needs to be unlocked and you need to have a custom recovery like twrp installed.
Once you have that taken care of, flash the rooted 2.20 ROM posted by scrosler.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812459
this way you get all of the features of the OTA except the Radio, but that can be flashed separately.
You also retain root, and keep the ability to flash kernels and radios from recovery in the future.

It's a little late for this probably but for future reference if you are rooted and want to stop receiving OTA updates remove/rename/delete HtcOMADM_ATT.apk and HtcOMADM_ATT.odex from system/apps, wipe cache and dalvik. If you want to remove "AT&T software update" from the "Settings" then remove HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_ATT.apk and HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_ATT.odex from system/apps, wipe cache and dalvik.

Probably not, they don't like to fix actual problems. They prefer to make minor tweaks and such to their bloat instead. You didn't want your device to actually work as advertised did you?

You guys can .... SAFELY... check your device to see if you're vulnerable to the hack on this site.
http://www.androiddoes.net/news/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-ussd-hack-test/
Read up on the page.. it says something about if Your Dialer screen coming up and your IMEI is being displayed on it then you have the Vulnerability.. if nothing happens.. or if your dialer comes up with nothing being displayed then you're probably safe.

Yes that would be nice, but there is another way thats easy. First restore your phone to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663369
Then root with io root, then take the update to 20k, or vis versa, doesnt matter. Then install autorec. You are now on 20k with root and recovery. Both are available here:

CAUTION: make sure you disable the OTA updater app.
