[Q] File manager to manage OS - General Questions and Answers

Hiyas,
Have a new and newly rooted NST/N2E/Nook Simple Touch using salsichad2's image which installs ES File Manager.
But this FM will only look at files outside of the OS, like an SD card, or over the 'net...
Q - Is there a FM app you prefer?
Q - Should I opt for a Terminal app and fly the CLI way?
Am seeking alternatives to ADB and booting with the noogie.img and mounting the N2E on my Linux system.
Help, advice appreciated!

Thank you... perspectives are never under "austerity measures," thankfully!
I learned that the Estrong File Manager included in salsichad2d's image (Thank You!) is older than currently available (1.6) & could not run with SU privileges... and I'm under austerity measures... so I installed the most current through Market, and now have access to "slash." Now to be very, very careful not to fat finger while using it

Sorry, should have provided respectful link to salsichad2d's post. AND, that I'm working with, among other things, a BN Nook Simple Touch. Please forgive my sloppy forum-ness!

i use astro file manager and i don't have any problem. Somewhere, has an option to see all the files and you can edit OS's files

new x10 user, PLEASE HELP. =,(

i just bought an x10 phone and wanted to know how to install applications and themes... PLEASE HELP ME...
OK,
for apps:
From the market it should be pretty obvious, so I'm assuming you mean from an apk on your SD card.
You'll need a file explorer like Estrong (from the market) or RootExplorer (only works with 'root' (see below)).
You also need to allow 'applications from unknown sources' (Settings -> Applications)
Then just browse to the apk in the file explorer and selecting it should prompt the installation. After that you're good to go.
Themes:
this is a bit trickier (is that a word).
1. First up, you'll need root (kind of like admin rights on windows). The easiest way is to use the one-click root app from the development section, this installs as above and then on launching there's a 'Root' and an 'Unroot' button. Click root and you're done.
2. What you're doing when you install a theme is replacing the apk files for the phones framework and certain key apps. The modified versions that are copied mostly just contain updated resources (almost always .png files).
This is the reason you need root, you are replaced protected system files. It is also the reason that you can only have one theme at a time and can't 'hot-swap' them like in timescape, for example.
The best way to go about this, in my opinion, is to download one of chewitts themes. Before you install it take a look at the installer bat - open it in Notepad - sorry I'm just assuming everyone uses windows , probably get shot for those sort of assumptions here
It is my firm belief that, if you don't understand what is going on in that installer file then you need to do some more research, start with the stickies here (maybe the one about how to use chewitts installer) and check this thread out as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714288&highlight=modify
Hope this is enough to get you started. Let me know if something isn't clear.

[Q] Kyros MID7015...No App Installer?

Hi, folks.
Newbie here.
Just purchased a new Coby Kyros MID7015. Trying to root device. Instructions here call for downloading Z4root; okay. I copied that file to the root directory of my 8GB microSD card; okay.
Instructions then refer to invoking the app installer to install Z4root...but I have no app installer (that I know of) or any kind of file manager on my device.
Is the device supposed to come with one?
Thanks for any help...
Check out this thread to root it and install the market: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870568
Hi, Fido.
Thanks so much for replying.
It was in the information in the link you provided that prompted my question. In the instructions, it says:
"2: Rooting Your Tablet. Download z4root 1.3.0 APK and place on your sdcard. Open Settings, go to Applications and check the Unknown Sources box. Use File Manager to navigate to the z4root APK (it's in the /sdcard folder) and click to run. You should now have root access (you may need to reboot). You will also notice a new app, Superuser, has been installed."
Note where it says "...use File Manager..." -- and that's where my issue is. I have no File Manager on my tablet...so I can't navigate to the z4root.apk to install it.
Where does the File Manager come from? Is it supposed to be part of the sdcard:update.zip? When I did the sdcard:update.zip (which the device said that I did "successfully"), there was no File Manager created on my device. I don't have one (that I know of) on my device...and I have gone through all the apps repeatedly. Is it buried in a menu somewhere?
Thanks...
If you havnt figured out already ....a "file manager" is an app you must download.....

[Tool] Modified Batch File For Perm-Temp-Root

Hi,
I take no credit for this work at all. See thread below for credits:-
Perma-Temp Root with *R/W* & Stable! By Eugene373
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161283
I dont use Terminal Emulator and so have modified the batch file so as it does not install it. (See attached file). To use this modded batch file, simply replace the batch file from the download in the above thread and run as instructed.
Also, I have superuser elite and wanted to use the latest beta version. The lates beta version can be downloaded after finding it with a gogle search (if you have superuser elite and are entitled to it) and the SU file and superuser.apk files can also be replaced.
These will be updated when the Batch file is run again. If terminal emulator is already installed, it can be deleted and wont be installed again.
Cheers
I don't really see the point in this. You deleted one line from a script. This is just clutter. Honestly if other people don't know how to delete one line from a text file, they shouldn't be doing anything root-related in the first place.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Thanks very much

I agree that it is only a single line, but not everyone is as competent as you and I provided additional information about super user. I did this because I thought it may be of help to some people. If its clutter, I apologise...but it helped one person and so I'm happy

Good for you then! That's the spirit, though perhaps not understood by some.
Well then how about a bat file howto guide? That would be pretty cool.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
A HOW TO guide would be outstanding, but would require more than you think. You have to consider WHERE people have stored files such as adb.exe.
Editing the BAT is simple enough...Just download it, right click, then choose edit. Remove what you need and then run. This assumes that you got the thing to work as it originally had been intended to though.

[APP] ES File Explorer CLASSIC (v3.2.5), perfect version before it got bloated!

Update 2023:
By now I've been using CX File Explorer (free. No ads. Friendly and intuitive UI) for 2 years with lots of pleasure! It has great support for local files, editing files, webDAV and even lets you edit online files locally and updates them online automatically. It's very easy and simple to use. High WAF. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cxinventor.file.explorer
Update 2018:
I switched completely to MiXplorer which has all features from the old ES File Explorer Classic and is available for free via XDALabs (which will also keep it up to date).
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.mixplorer
------------------------------------------
ES File Explorer has become bloated since version 4. Luckily, version 3 existed for over a year and overall, ES File Explorer has been a rockstable app, with all the bells and whistles you need from a File Explorer. I believe app updates are HIGHLY overrated in some cases. Just like QuickPic v4.5.2, ES File Explorer 3.2.5 has been working perfectly for years. No update could improve it or make it more stable, it could only become more commercial, like happened with both ES File Explorer and a lot of other great apps like QuickPic, making it more heavy to run for your phone, adding malware or moving certain features to a Pro version.
With this signed version of ES File Explorer 3.2.5 (the latest v3) you don't have to worry about the Play Store updating it to the bloated version!
Because it has been signed, you will get a notice the first time you run it, about this version being a custom version. This is normal, just hit the checkbox and ignore it.
Why is ES File Explorer 3 still the best?
- free
- remote browser (access files on your phone via your desktop browser easily)
- S(FTP), SMB etc support
- DLNA
- root supported
- backup apps etc etc
Download ES File Explorer 3.2.5 SIGNED from my CloudUp Classic Apps collection: CloudUp clearly failed to keep the downloads working. Please find it attached to this post.
When you start ES File Explorer the first time, it will ask if you want to update, hit the checkbox (don't remind me again) and select no.
thanks
If you like the new material design theme, there is a version modded in the forums of Mobilism with this features:

I'm sorry! I can but I think this could be interpreted as warez or similar and violating the forum rules .
Anyway, I think a quick Google search will return your desired result...
The app has material design since version 4.
Warning:
Do not post or request warez.
This is a violation of the Forum Rules.

Ha I wish he had put that in his 1st post and changed his title! That way I would have found it and no need to create this topic.
But if I only look at the name of his file, it is version 2.3.7, while mine is the latest (3.2.5) before version 4 which introduced a bloated ES. But I haven't actually installed his version. If it is the same version as mine, they are simply identical.
@zilexa
exactly what i was thinking about these apps.
hated the updates.
more ram
more cpu
more functions but useless
Solid explorer should have paid es file explorer commission when they came out with version 4. I know 8 people personally who switched over...maybe some of the ones holding out will use your version so thanks!
i already have patched

I switched from ES File Explorer to X-plore by Lonely Cat Games. I highly recommend X-plore for everyone.

As with all file managers, the paid features of X-plore are available for FREE in ES File Explorer Classic, version 3.2.5 before it became bloated.
SFTP/SSH file transfer, remote manager (managing files from a pc, via wifi), music player. It's paid in X-Plore.
So again, no reason to use anything else, sticking with ES File Explorer 3.2.5

Fortunately I don't need any of paid features in X-plore. Keep free without ads, without selling your data, without background jobs, without battery drain.
Hello - I'm running Android 4.4.4 (the latest release from T-Mobile for the Samsung Galaxy S4) and I have ES File Explorer 4.0.5.4 (Market) installed. I'm not sure what the "Market" part means, but I don't think it's the paid version.
I can't edit text files or save newly created text files to my external SD card any more.
On the Google Play site under the "What's New" section for ES File Explorer, it says, "Cannot write on ext-sdcard in KitKat(4.4) -System limitation. Root or upgrade to Android 5.0"
I am rooted but I guess that isn't enough for the version I'm running.
Does anyone know if version 3.2.5 will let me create and edit text files on the ext-sdcard if I'm running 4.4.4?
Thanks.
Edit: I was able to get it working with the 4.0.5.4 version that was already installed. I didn't realize that there was a toggle in ES File Explorer called "Root Explorer". I had allowed the SuperSU rooting app permission to ES File Explorer, but still needed to toggle on the Root Explorer toggle in ES File Explorer. (I got to the toggle by clicking on the 'three bars' in the upper left corner of ES File Explorer.)
After toggling it on, I was able to edit the platform.xml file as mentioned in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
After restarting the phone I was able to edit and save text files on the external SD card.
Been looking for this one.. thanks a lot!

You'll need a rooted device regardless of the app you use obviously. Bunch of them out there but I'd recommend Root Explorer. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer Been using it for many years and is still being supported.
