[Q] How to play a movie on an android tablet - General Questions and Answers

I have purchased an ePad 2.2 android tablet for my nephew. I've successfully loaded songs and music videos from my iTunes account to a micro sd card. I have been able to play them on the tablet with no issues. I also downloaded a couple of movies but I've been unable to get the movies to play. The odd thing is the file formats for the music videos are the same as the movies, (.m4v). Yet the music videos play and the movies do. I didn't convert any files to different formats. I'm only using the "My Video" app that came installed on the tablet to play the music videos. Yet the "My Video" app won't play the movies. I'm guessing it's because the movies have an index whereas the music videos are just plain videos. Also, to get my iTunes files from iTunes to the 16 gb micro sd card I simply did a drap and drop in folders I created called music, music videos and movies.
I've searched all day and have found nothing to help. Does anyone have any clue how I can get the movies to play? Is there an app I can download? I don't have access to download thru the Android Market. I've been using Amazon.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! U can email me at [email protected]. Hopefully I've included enough info to be helpful. Please ask questions if I haven't.
Thanks so much,
Dgj

The standard video app is rubbish but most video players like mx video player for example will play your files. Just try a few free ones and see what you prefer, you may find some at getjar.com which gives you free apps and is a respected site so you will find a lot of market apps free there.

I can recommend Mobo Player too.

play itunes videos on Android tablet
itunes videos are drm protected, you have to get a DRmare M4V Converter to help you remove DRM. check this: macobserver.com/weekly-sponsorship/sponsor-drmare/

This only allows you to control VLC on your PC, won't allow you to play anything on the phone.
Zune will convert 99% of the media it can't natively play and it will do it pretty quickly and with very good quality. At some point in the future we will most likely be able to copy/past files onto the device and use 3rd party video software.

\what about youtube files . flv files ?
youTube files .flv files, I suppose can't, as I usually download the YouTube videos with iFunia YouTube Converter and then it convert the flv files automaticly for me.
There are 2 players that normally can play many file type.
VLC player and Gomplayer, VLC is free~
here you can get: download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html
No dice as of now. Not possible without usb mass storage support, how else would you copy&paste the files over? The Zune software will only sync files it supports.
I'd say convert your .flv files to a common video format that every device can use, like .avi or .mp4 to name a few. I do it for my music videos downloaded from youtube. Those file formats should copy over easily. If not, zune will convert them effortlessly.

thank you all for the reply. but the hell if i am going to back to converting movies before playing them. gone those days when i wanted to put movies on my nokia phone because it couldnt play **** but mp4 or 3gp.
i think i will hold on for a while. plus the fact i cant purchase paid apps because i dont live in the US is a deal breaker too.
i guess i should wait for while. bummer, i really liked the browser and the interface a little of the device.
so .. any updates since then or still nothing yet ?
Nope I wish there was though. I travel a lot and take that time to watch movies and tv shows on my phone. I still have to carry around my TP2 while I travel now to enjoy my media. I completely agree that the days of conversion should be over now. I used to laugh at other devices that couldn't play xvid natively and now I'm in that boat .
I really hope this feature emerges either natively or through a 3rd party eventually.
this is why 3 people I know of traded back to android again. they thought they could just ftp over a movie fike (like on ios) and play it on the phone.
one of them actually said "so my phone.... can't. share a file..... with other PHONES?"
then the other guys shook their heads and continued moving music around between themslves. no computers, no chords, and no transcoding.
the one guy bought a galaxy tab along with a thunderbolt, and tried to craigslist his samsung.
all because there is no fole support. wow.
Semi-convenient workaround

After reading your post I decided to tinker a bit and found a semi-convenient workaround.
I tested downloading video releases for the iTouch and found that if I transfer them using the USB Device Enabler into the Storage\Video folder on my device choosing 'Don't convert just copy' when you transfer the video, then it shows up and plays back fine on the phone.
Obviously it would be ideal if i could playback any codec but for now this will do.

why no stock video player?

to my amazement there doesn't seem to be anythign on stock that allows me to play video - other than - i'm guessing the gallery for video i've recorded myself.
seriously?
Nexus is pure google experience, so it assume you to use youtube
there are tons of free apps, the best one is MoboPlayer
The gallery app does scan for videos stored in your SD, I guess you are just meant to play videos using the gallery app. Sounds counter intuitive I know. But keep in mind it supports very limited number of formats, which I know of only mp4 and 3gp. To play other formats, install a video player from the market as suggested.

problem viewing avi via microSD?

Hello all,
I'm very new to Asus and Google OS but not new to the tech scene. I wanted to watch avi movies on my transformer so I loaded a few tv episodes onto a microSD (generic, 32gb class 4) but not all the files will play. I'm using MxPlayer and DicePlayer and neither are doing the trick. I've also tried MoboPlayer, BSPlayer and Rockplayer. None of these will handle all the avi files. Only selective files will play.
The plot thickens. I understand avi's can have a wide assortment of codecs but for one tv show (Friends) I personally ripped all the episodes myself from a DVD collection using Handbrake, with the same settings for all episodes (which now I forget because it's been so long). SOME of these episodes play perfectly without a hitch while others won't load at all.
Can anyone advise on troubleshooting? Could it be there generic microSD card? Do I need to download additional codecs from the internet or search other media players?
Thanks in advance!!

It could be that some of them didn't copy over correctly. Check the file size of each episode to see if it matches on your computer ad the SD card. If it doesn't, that's your problem. If they do match, try playing them from the SD on your computer. If they don't play right, delete and copy them back over (or re-rip). If they all play fine, find someone who knows this better than I do. Oh, and MX will tell you the codec under Tools->Properties->More when you're watching them.

Downloading movies in HD

I was just looking to download a couple of films from Sony's Video Unlimited store and noticed they're only available to download in SD. The device can playback in HD, right? If so seems crazy that Sony's own store doesn't offer this option.
is there anywhere else I can download HD from but watch the film in the Movies app? From what I understand of the Google Play Store movies, they can only be played via Google apps...
We were only given the SD version, even if you install the Sony MediaGo desktop app on your computer you can only get the SD version for download on your computer as well.

Play videos on external media player (chrome)?

Is it possible somehow to play videos you stream online on a media player of choice? Right now it streams internally and I don't like the way you fast forward.
Do you have an external media player? A lot of sites ask me what app I want to use, but will depend on the website and how they stream.
