[Q] Can I restore my backup onto a new Inspire? - HTC Inspire 4G

so my power plugin/usb port is broken i can no longer charge my phone, my sd card still works and has a recent back up on it, im wondering after i root my new inspire if it will be as simple as installing clockworkmod and restoring the backup from my sd card, im wondering if this is possible with a brand new inspire mine is 6 months old, or if there is any changes to the inspire that i should be aware of, i also use a custom 4EXT recovery, will i have to install that again before restore, any knowledge and help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Yes. Just root your new phone, install 4ext recovery and restore backup.

CWM recovery restores the data partition as a mirror image of the original (including device specific information) and this can be a problem should the Inspire you replaced ever get back into circulation as a refurb. I wouldn't worry too much about that, but just to be safe, when I did this with my own damaged Inspire, I did a full CWM restore to the new phone, but then did a Titanium backup of the apps and settings, then wiped and restored the TB backup to the fresh Inspire. This ensures that any device specific info gets cleared. Yeah, I'm a little anal, but what the heck.

in Regard to recovery and backup

I'm currently on stock rom with it rooted. I wanted to know if i do a back-up of a fresh install of the stock rom and I start to delete files off my phone. If I happen to delete the wrong file, can I restore with the back-up, will those delete files be there again?
If you have a custom recovery installed that supports backups then create a backup with it and delete whatever you are trying to. If **** gets bad then just use the recovery option to restore and you should be back to where you started
Did you do a Nandroid backup, through CWM, or a Titanium type backup ?
A nandroid one will restore the phone to the point in time of the backup. Any changes since it will be lost during restore.
Titanium, or similar, will allow a finer granuality of files/apps/data..
If you play at swapping ROMs and want to revert a nandroid backup is a MUST.
Kernel backup?
This may be a strange question. I just got a T Mobile Sensation yesterday and already rooted, s-off, and did a Nandroid Backup. I previously had a Samsung Captivate and flashed it all the time. This is my second Android device and first HTC device, on the Captivate Nandroid only backed up the ROM without touching the kernel making flashing back and forth between ROMS a PITA. Is the same true with HTC Sensation, will Nandroid also backup the kernel?
Please don't flame me, I used search and found this thread so I am attempting to find answers without starting new threads on topics already discussed.
Thanks.

Does that mean that with a Vodafone NL branded phone (no RUU available for download at this moment), I can S-Off, Root and use nandroid backup to create an image I can always return to?
I want to get rid of the VF crapware as well as the quicker updates. In other words: a stock HTC (not vodafone) ROM.
In case of a hardware defect (unrelated to flashing other ROMs*), I want to be able to get back to VF branded, so the guys at HTC (who know what S/N belongs to Vodafone) won't see anything weird.
Thanks
*: If I mess up, I am willing to pay for it. But if it's unrelated, I don't want HTC to be able to start whining about software changes by me.

[Q] Backing up my backups

So right now I'm using CWM to do my nandroid backups. I make one after I make any major updates or changes - call me a worry wort. I also use Titanium Backup.
With doing this, obviously it takes up a bit of room so I offload them to my computer. The issue here is if I do something detrimental and need to restore, I don't know of a way to get the backup files back onto the internal memory since you can't access them via CWM, if that makes sense.
I guess I can simply keep just the latest backup saved on the phone itself but I'm wondering if there's another method that I'm not aware of. Is there a way to get files copied to the internal memory if you can't fully boot into the OS?
Oh and one other question: Does a nandroid backup include every single item? Basically is it a 100% clone of the device or are some thing left out? Basically if I tried a completely different rom and then decided to go back to an entirely different rom, would I simply be able to restore it and be up and running? The last restore I did seems to indicate it does but that was going from different versions of the same rom.
nandroid is a clone of ur system.

Ok that's what I figured; read something a bit ago which seemed to say something else.
So if I want to test a few completely different rom setups and make a nandroid backup of each one, I could essentially swap between them whenever I want by simply restoring them and I'll get back to the exact state as I was at the time they were made? Menus and all?
So apparently a kernel change will not get reverted via nandroid. Anything else? Just tried Entropy's daily driver and apparently it's a no go for me. Restored via nandroid and still freezes during 'X' boot animation.
I was running Infusion 1.1 and made sure to reset the VC O/C back to stock and reboot before updating...

[Q] backed up rom and storage card

I backed up my rooted Inspire and I swap different backups of different roms but the question i had was if my phone was lost would i be able to just restore a rom to a new phone or would i have issues becuase i did not have the original microsd card. In other words do you have to also backup your microsd card separately to a computer just incase you had your phone lost or stolen to restore a backup image?
Wouldn't work, or at least I don't think it would work as you described it. The new Inspire (or old one other then the one you lost) would also have to be rooted. If it wasn't rooted you wouldn't be able to get in cwr to restore the back-up.
If your phone is stolen you can get a new one root it and install your backups from cmw onto that phone no problems.
Donation accepted towards an Atrix 2
got it
ok thanks, hopefully i wont need to

[Q] Information about ADB manual backups

Hey guys,
I've broken my Nexus 4, it felt out of my table and the front glass is cracked and the touchscreen unresponsive. However, I can see everything on it and can power the phone normally and such.
The phone is unlocked and rooted, running the stock Android 4.2.1.
I'll send the phone back to the repair center so they can give it a new screen and, obviously, wipe out the phone.
I've already used adb to copy my /sdcard into my computer, but I would like to backup everything that could make the process of using the phone after the repair less painful. I'm unable to run the adb backup utility since I can't unlock the phone as it requests.
I'm right now trying to copy /data into my computer. Is it of any use?
Is there anything else that I can backup before sending the phone out?
Ideally I would like to be able to, after getting the phone back, unlock it, maybe install the Paranoid Android ROM, root it, and then put back applications, settings, pictures, etc etc
Thanks in advance!

since the phone itself still works, and the unresponsive screen is the only issue, you might be able to make a nandroid backup (complete backup of everything on phone-apps, settings, etc.)
I assume you probably have a touch based recovery on your phone like twrp or cwm touch. This is obviously an issue.
To counter this you could try using fastboot to flash clockworkmod non touch recovery. This allows you to use the volume rockers and power button to navigate.
To flash the recovery install all the correct drivers, and download the non touch cwm and place it your fastboot directory. Then boot the phone into the bootloader, and use this command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "name of recovery file.img"
Then from there you can boot into recovery, go to backup and restore, and finally make a nandroid backup. From there you could copy the backup using adb onto your computer. (the backups are stored in sdcard/clockworkmod/backups)
Thanks! I'll try that.
I think I tried before but it didn't work because I had little free space, and for some reason I gave up (thinking I was doing something wrong or going to try something else, I tried a lot of things during those days).
And then to restore that backup into the fixed phone I'll flash CWM again and use it's restore function, right?
Would there be any issue to install a custom mod (such as Paranoid Android) and then restoring this backup?
On a sidenote: on my Nexus 4 (without real sdcard) the clockworkmod folder is located at /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod.

Yep once you get the phone fixed/replaced, you may need to reflash cwm and copy the backup back onto the phone (if they wiped it)
Then just use the restore option in cwm.
If you install paranoid android, then restore the backup, it will restore to whatever rom you had when you took the backup.

Boo =(
Ok, let me try another idea: I could get the phone back, restore it normally as we said with CWM, and then use TitaniumBackup to backup apps and settings, then save that to my computer, install Paranoid and then use TB to restore the useful stuff back into the new ROM?
I should just take care on not backing up system stuff, right?

Yep thats probably your best bet. Although I would avoid backing up/restoring system stuff with TB as it causes lots of bugs.
Just use TB to backup apps+app data, and you can restore them after installing PA. There shouldnt be any problems

Flashing wrong Recovery (hboot 2.22) wiped whole phone (including sd-card)

Hey folks,
have a huge problem here. I think i erased all the data of my girlfriend's phone -.-
I just wanted to clear her phone by setting it up with a custom stock rom withput bloatware.
I started to unlock the bootloader and flash a new recovery because i wanted to do a nandroid backup and use titanium to backup her data. But the problem started here. Her phone had the 4.4.2 OTA update --> HBoot 2.22 but I flashed TWRP 2.7.0.0 instead of 2.7.0.5 because i didn't know the fact that the partition layout changed. After flashing the recovery the internal sd card couldnt be found and twrp said "no OS installed" when i tried to reboot to the system. Well, the phone did boot to the system, but i think it made a background factory reset i didn't want to do ...
So now i had a clear System running, no apps, no contacts, nothing. At this point I didn't look at the sd card if the data there is erased, too.
I thought, when i flash a recovery which finds the sd card, maybe the system will be restored as before this procedure. So i flashed twrp 2.6.3.0 but again, no sd card. After that i tried cwm 6.0.3.6 (because i didnt know that there was a 6.0.4.7 ...) and cwm accepted the card. So i booted again into system but still there was a clear stock rom, with ... nothing.
THEN I looked into the sd card and ... nothing. Empty, everything got deleted, only the new made folders where there. No Pictures, no Music, nothing.
My girlfriend gonna kill me ...
I tried to rescue the data from the sd card, but different apps found nothing then the data, that is already on the sd card. No old pictures or old music. Thanks to MTP, i can't run a datarescue at my pc (or can i?).
Do you have any idea what i can do now? Is there any chance of getting the data from the sd card back? Or better, getting the old app data back?
Please help me guys, you are my last hope.
greetings,
patrick
best of luck to you my friend
Im in the same exact boat to the T !!
Did the same thing almost identical to you , all because the development is so shabby and unclear with this particular phone its pathetic.
twrp website shows the latest recovery.img as 2.7.0.0 No mentioning of flashing a newer version
Theres only one thing at this point you can hope for Find the stock 4.4.2 ruu utility and run it... or get her a new phone.
Ive been at my pc for 8 hrs going blind and im done ill toss it before i spend another hour searching for a fix
I have multiple posts Noone cares here.
And i dont believe htc has the 4.4.2 ruu out yet
Well, my problem was not to get the phone running, because it did "repair" itself.
My problem is the lost data
Hi Patrick
Having no backups and starting to change things in software is always a bad idea. Mobile phone, PC, etc.
On the other side, there are very nice tents today in case your girlfriend has locked you out of your home now
Consider it from this side, you tried something and bungled :crying: the phone/data - hopefully others will read this before they install the "old" recoveries on their new Hboot.
But I totally agree with you, these unofficial versions of the recoveries are really hard to find. As I was looking for the download link I've chosen the way through the xda thread.
regards
Thanks for your thoughts
But luckily my girlfriend doesnt lock me out of home, because i had the backup from November
Since then we didn't have made any greater activities so no real important pictures were made since then.
I thught of making a "newbie friendly" thread with important information about hboot 2.22 and the "hidden" recovery's from twrp and cwm.
Maybe this can help others to prevent such mistakes I did in the past.

Would be good to have this info in a sticky, as these posts can get buried easily.
