My cousin is looking for a smartphone and wish not to use data (3G, 2G).
He asked me for a recommendation and I was thinking about Nexus S.
Since I've only used smartphone as PDA/MP3 player, I don't really know how Nexus S handles data.
I've had tried a Nexus One before, and even with Data-3G turned off, the phone still used 2G sometimes.
You should be able to just turn off the mobile network in wireless settings.

Hello
You don't have to turn 3G off just turn off the phones ability to use data connection. Then the phone won't use any data connection via the mobile network.

That's what I did when I was trying out the Nexus One.
But somehow, it managed to use data (through 2G) as I'm sure I had mobile data (3G) turned off.
And there's no way to turn off 2G afaik.
Edit: In other words, is the same thing gonna happen on Nexus S?
Can someone kind enough please try to have data turned off overnight and see if any data was used?
No data is used when data is turned off. Been traveling over the holidays and only turned it on when i needed it. When it was turned off all the data. Meters said 0.
3G and 2G is just the 2 different technologies / frequencies that tje phone use.

Hi All,
A friend of mine got himself a iPhone.
Without customs builds, SDKs, etc... I still think the home
cooked builds for WM are much better.
One thing I envy is that apparently his WiFi is alway on.
Having that on it connects to all the networks it can
saving/speeding lots of data for professional use of
a mobile device (I use it as my mobile office).
What is most desirable is that his battery doesnt
seem to run out any more faster.
I tried to use once with my WM and my device asked for
more juice in 3 hours.
Is there a driver / app that can use the wifi hardware as iPhone does ??
some kind of passive WiFi mode ???
Cheers,
Smartin

I also have a friend with an iPhone right here with me and his does not stay connetcted when the phone is put to sleep mode, well it will stay connected for 30 seconds and then shut down. I verified this by pinging his phone from my PC, after 30 seconds of sleep - no answer and my router lost it from its lists of clients. BUT it was wery quick to aquire the signal after waking up. I then set the IP lease to 3 minutes and put the iPhone to sleep for 5 minutes just to be sure and then it took the usual 5-7 seconds to aquire IP again so it seems to me its using som kind of quick connect settings as long as the lease doesn´t expire.
Anybody know why i can't access my 4G LTE or HSPA+ network on this rom? It's really weird because when i'm home, i have access to 3G, but as soon as i leave home, no data connection is made. I have full bars in an area where LTE works really well but it doesnt want to connect to it? Are there any known problemw ith this rom?
Try flashing different radios from the dev forum or try changing apn.

Hi all,
Im having problems with tethering with my sensation and it is frustrating me. I've tried it with 2 laptops and also with my desktop and still no success. The wireless devices do recognize the phone with no issue and showing me full reception, but yet i cant browse and it seems something is blocking it.. is it something that has to do with the phone or is it that my cell provider blocking it?
here is a picture to demonstrate the problem. As you can see, the phone is identified with full reception and telling me it is connected, but theres the yellow mark which indicate a problem and it says "no internet access" although i am connected.
It is like that with every device i try to tether

P.S
If it matters, then im using the Eleganicia sense 4 rom although this problem also happened with sense 3.6 roms as well
shame there are no replies as i'm having the same problem. it also happens with bluetooth tethering. All connects/pairs fine but no internet. I have mainly been trying to use this with my Nexus 7 for when i'm out and about. If it helps, i'm with Orange UK.
Any help would be appreciated!
Hi,
In order to set up tethering,I went to settings/more/tethering & portable hotspot/portable WiFi hotspot settings/ and then set my password and SSID
Turn on hotspot and mobile data, find my device, connected using the password, and everything worked.
Not sure if you missed any of those steps.
I've had the phone for just over a day now and the battery life has been fantastic when outside where I have great coverage. However, for the past couple of hours I have been studying in the basement of the library at my college and I noticed that my battery drains around 20-25% per hour (not a typo) when my phone is not attached to AT&T's network, and it is searching for a network. The only application that I have that accesses data when the screen is off is Google Now, and even that has location settings turned off.
It appears that Google Now will constantly try an access a data network even if you are in an area with no coverage at all. My Galaxy S3 did not have this issue. The phone would simply stop accessing data after a short period of time if it could not attach to a data network.
Anyone else have this issue? I have had to turn data off and it seems to have fixed the issue. My phone is no longer using any battery idly.
You can see what I am talking about in this picture

Does that drain persist after a reboot? My phone started chewing through battery for no reason at about 35 hours of uptime.
From what I experienced on my S3 and also the N5, whenever I go to school, I'd have to turn off my data because my coverage sucks there. However, if I leave the data on, it begins to roam/search for 3G signal and will eventually drain my battery. What you're experiencing seems normal to me. Just turn off your data and hop onto the WI-FI connection to conserve your battery. Seems to do the trick for me all the time.
I flashed MM D6633 23.5.A.1.291 on my D6683 but when I turn off wifi, it automatically turns on mobile data, even though I had disabled mobile data before, which means that I have to disable mobile data everytime I turn off wifi... This was not the case on LP D6633 5.1.1
How can I prevent this auto turn on of mobile data ?
Thank you
Let me guess, go check the dual SIM settings?
There is nothing in dual sim settings about this. Can you pinpoint where I should find this ?

Nobody has the same issue ?? Can it be a bad flash or is it normal in MM to have this stupid behavior ?
Maybe try setting preferred network type to GSM only?

Yes but that's not what I want. In LP 5.1.1, I just disabled my wifi when I don't use it, and that's it, in LTE or not
In MM 6.0.1, when I turn off wifi, it switches mobile data automatically, whether I'm in LTE, WCDMA or GSM only will not change a thing. This behavior is very stupid. Not all people wants their data on all the time !
Are you experiencing the same behavior ? In dev settings, the option to automatically switch to data in case of bad wifi is disabled. I tried disabling background data sync but it doesn't change anything...
