Touch Screen Issues (ideas plz) - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hello fellow G2X owners. Need some opinions from people with experience in tinkering with electronics.
My touch screen would lock up and would only become responsive after toggling the power button. Also, it would make random touches by itself while just sitting on the table. This made me suspect maybe a grounding issue. I was really praying that wasn't the issue because I bought this phone from eBay so I don't have a warrenty.
After doing a lot of Google searches I found iPhone users had similar problems in which they said the techs would clean and reseat the digitizer connector. I thought that would be my only hope of fixing this issue so after reading that, it reassured me this was something I could fix. I went ahead and broke the phone down and cleaned all the connectors since I had it open and then reseated them. This seems to have helped a lot but the issue is still persisting but thankfully on a much smaller scale. The screen still becomes unresponsive once in awhile and still makes random touches when the phone is just sitting on the table. Like I said, its not doing this nearly as much as it was, but I want to completely eliminate this issue.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Just send it to LG and not T-Mobile. U should have warranty

Could you explain a little more please. This phone was used so I would assume it had a limited warrenty from LG that has run out by now. Also, when I broke this phone down, I didn't find any seals that would show evidence of tampering with the device thus breaking any warrenty. Makes me wonder if this phone was been opened before.

Has a one year warranty through LG and since the g2x hasn't yet been out for a year......

I bought this phone new, and I can't find the seal anywhere either, don't worry.

Just wondering if u have any case on the phone? I found a little bug on the Trident aegis if unplug the USB rubbery port and replug it after about 10 secs the screen wont work but when u unplug it it works again. Its hard to explain but maybe ill make a video on it if everyone wants one
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

Yes, I have that exact case your talking about. If that's really what's causing this, I'm surprised I haven't noticed. Even more surprised how a piece or rubber could do that. Strange though, I actually took the case off earlier before reading your post and haven't had a single issue in the past hour. I will do some testing of this theory.
Edit: after looking into it I releazied the rubber flap that covers the USB doesn't actually touch anything but the external housing. The audio jack cover however, actually sticks inside the jack port.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

Ok I thought it was just me. Take something metal and touch the rubber to discharge it. Works for me for like a 1 week.

I, too, have been having this issue, as I posted in this thread: Link
and showed in this video:
Link
At first I thought it was a software issue due to the randomness of the occurrence, but now I'm pretty sure it's hardware as a firm push at the top section of the screen often helps, as does a firm whack, but only for a minute or 2, tops.
Pressing power always helps, but holding it doesn't. Taking apart the phone and reseating all the connectors (I wasn't sure which one the digitizer was though, so I didn't clean any) barely helped.
Input is always appreciated

I found that g2x touchscreen acts crazy when used with one of my usb cables.
Looks and acts like a touchscreen problem.
Could this be related to your issue?
Are you charging or connected to computer when it occurs?

Low quality USB chargers / cables can cause issues, but I've only ever encountered that on my Galaxy Spica, and my issue appears both when charging and when not.
Not sure about OP though; don't want to thread hijack, but the issue sounds similar.

Naw, it'll happen no matter what. Been 24 though now without that case and not a single problem. If it goes a week with no case and no issues, I'm gonna sign it off as the case being the culprit. Hate not having a case. Not having a case is what forced me into buying a new phone.

Hold a metal screw on the rubber plug thing. I also rebooted surfing the process. This night be a gimmick but it worked for me. Try and tell us if it worked
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

Naw haven't tried that yet. I'd rather just make sure its the case first, then I'll see about discharging any static built up in the case. I am currently in a very dry climate and would probably have to discharge it fairly often.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

Ok well I'm glad I'm not the only one. Shoulda posted this find but I didn't know if it was just a user mistake or not.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

Well after a week with the case on and a week with the case off, I can't really say it is the case. Its been well over a week since I've had any issues so I'm hoping that whatever it was has worked itself out.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

Well that's good it worked. Probably since u didn't use the case it didn't have any static stuff. Its hard to explain.

I just received this phone from ebay today and am having the same exact problem, no case, I've had it for only a couple hours, any ideas?

[Q] hardware issue or not?

Since about 2 weeks ago I've been having issues with my back button, at times I have to push really hard on it for it to work. It doesnt happen all the time but it still happens and its annyoing. I thought it was a rom issue but I'm not sure.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
Sounds like hardware, if it was a rom issue, we would have probably already had an thread/fix for it. Do you have a warranty for the phone?
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
do you have a screen protector or case on the device? Check to make sure nothing is under the screen protector or remove the case if one is present.
Mine has been acting up since I flashed my first rom a couple of days back. It seems to do it most when I'm coming back from sleep mode. I'll try pulling the screen protector (could use a new one anyway), but it seems like quite a coincidence with the timing

Anyone replace the charging port yet?

so i've gotten my hands on a galaxy s3, which i'm super pumped about, but it had a bad charge port. seems to have been corroded with sweat (the woman ran with it in her shirt lol) so i cleaned it up hardcore with some rubbing alch etc, but i cannot get it to charge correctly anymore. basically, it might charge half a percent per every hour or so....like, something incredibly slow. last night i left it on from 8pm until 10am the next day, and it only went up about 26%.
when plugged into PC, the comp tells me unrecognized USB device, blah blah blah, can't install drivers..so clearly there's something up with the charge port. now i've found a replacement on ebay for only 5 bucks, which is awesome..however, i don't know what kind of task it would be to replace the charge port, as i've never done it before.
anyone have any experience, or have any better methods to clean out the current port? i've used a toothbrush with rubbing alch, and then a toothpick to fine clean it in there, and then i blow it out with compressed air after i let it sit a bit just to fully dry it out. again, it'll charge, but so horribly slow...and thing is, it even says AC charging, too.
here's a pic as an example:
Why wouldn't you just go to Verizon and get a replacement? or even a 14 day swap if you're in the 14 days?
lol bc it's not my phone..i bought it off a customer at my store since it was busted (she bought another one lol) and either way, we can't warranty it because she has two small cracks in the two corners..she's obviously dropped it within the 1 week she had it anyway.
What??? Jayochs! Sorry I don't have anything to contribute but there is a thread on here of a guy who disassembled a GS3 so maybe that will help you get an idea?

that's IF i can get this thing repaired lol
so i got the charge port today finally....i also got an external battery charger and 2 aftermarket batteries in the mean time (problem is it takes like 10 hours to charge from 0 to 100%......crappy charger)
so now i have this tinyyy little USB port, and i've never really taken a phone apart before, especially doing soldering work on a PCB.
does anyone have any experience or anything replacing it on this phone yet? i'm scared to do it myself, but i absolutely need to fix this charge port so i can charge normally and root, etc
damn, nevermind...just read that you need a hot air soldering gun to do it, and i don't have one of those. i guess there's nothing left to do but just swap batteries in and out of it..no root for me

You could always take it to a pc repair shop. They'll probably charge you $20 to do it, especially if the phone is already taken apart.

I would gladly fix your charge port for a price. The main thing about diy is do not be afraid of breaking something, your s3 and other electronics are built sturdier than people think...... Think how hard people drop em and they still work. But don't just go taking on stuff, be careful just don't be afraid and renege where everything went and in what order. Its really simple. I've been working on phone hardware and xboxs, ps3s etc for a few years now..... I'm just not getting into the software stuff

If you are really worried about doing the repair your self, and can't find someone to do it at a reasonable price......I would just do the palm stone wireless charging mod.
The needed parts are ten bucks on Amazon

There is a guy in red bank
that replaces ports for like $60. He was going to repair my GS2 (my last phone) but I just bought a phone with a cracked screen and swapped the board instead. PM me if you would like his number but he advertises on craigslist.
awesome, thanks for the info! the only real reason i want this port working is so i can root, so that wireless charging method isn't really for me, but thanks for suggestions guys!

So what is the guys ph # for repairs? or do you have a link to a DIY video so I can see it and adventure myself into it.??

I plan to use this video to reference how to fix my gs3 should anything go wrong with my device in the future. I found this video on YouTube which explains disassembly and reassembly really well. Looks like the charging port is soldered to the main board.

[Q] New LCD and Digitizer DOA?? Help please!

So I ordered a new LCD and digitizer from new harbor via amazon.
I took the phone apart, installed the new array, and powered it on, and the screen is great (maybe even brighter than the last one) but it just has zero touch input.
The last screen worked fine, but the LCD was broken. I could have it acknowledge touches so I dont think that the motherboard or anything else is broken, so I wonder what may have went wrong.
Should I take this mofo apart again and see if I have a loose connection? Maybe the ribbon cable is not connected right?
Probably the past is DOA?
Help please! thanks.

Scratch that. Just re read your post. "Zero touch input". It's an option in the rom.
There are a few threads/posts where people have replaced the screen, either here or the dhd forum. Check what they had to say. I have absolutely no experience in that. Perhaps it's a cable as you said, but before doing that, I would research on it first. You may end up like me with 9 screws left over after taking apart my ps3 three times (screwing it up even more).

I've had my inspire apart several times. Other than removing the Flash/GPS, and separating the LCD from the frame its quite simple. If you want a pain try a slide phone.

Understand your pain because just recently I had to change my entire screen for my Inspire 4G. I assume that you did everything correctly but here is the video that helped me on youtube:

If you did everything correctly it could just mean that you prob got a faulty part

[Q] Screen drop outs and now always black, why?

Hi guys,
my DS did some strange stuff lately. It began with the screen staying black when I woke it up (hardware buttons did turn on and touchscreen also worked). I thought it was a software issue, because after a few on and offs the screen usually worked again. Also, this never happened when the phone was charging.
But a few days ago the screen never turned back on again, even when charging. I got a new battery but still no change. It won't even turn on when booting or when going to fastboot/ hboot.
Does anyone have an idea what is broken? I think my best guess is to have a look at these other screen replacement threads, but I wanted to ask first because the screen seemed to have gradually become broken, which confuses me. I didn't think something like that was even possible. Also, I can't return it since I bought it used and in Germany (DS is USA exclusive).
Thanks for help
Most certainly hardware as it is black when in bootloader and ROM. Best guess is the LCD but could also be the main flex the likelyhood of any thin else is fairly small.
Do read up on the screen replacement threads as this phone is one pain in the ass, you also need to be aware of what LCD to buy as there were different ones and they are not compatible.

Thanks for the tips. Screen might be still ok since it went out gradually, could be a defective contact since it also went on and off randomly. But I guess there is no way to only replace this contact, too complicated to find out... I will see.
Yeah, I had a look at these threads already, thank you
I had a program that I moved to the sd card that would cause the screen not to come on and would have to do a battery pull. When I moved the app back to the phone, the problem stopped.
(Walgreens app)
It has happened again since, so it may be another app I have to track down. Or I may be looking at faulty screen trouble too.
Sent from my MyTouch 4G Slide using Tapatalk 2
even if an app on sd were the cause of this it certainly couldnt make the screen blackout while in recovery and bootloader mode. to the best of my knowledge it has to be a hardware fault if screen wont turn on in bootloader... but well ive been proven wrong in the past
Well since I had problems with the screen turning off before when it did work in recovery, there might be a connection to daswerk's case. However I kept all my apps on the internal SSD and do remember checking it. Also, my screen turned back on sooner or later or when I played around with the keyboard.
However later it was off even in recovery mode. I did disassemble my DS lately (and broke my screen like seemingly everyone else hehe) and am now waiting for my new LCD screen to arrive in Germany from the states haha. Shipping costs were higher than LCD costs, d'oh! Thanks again demkantor, you've been helping me indirectly with your posts in the other threads as well
So guys, screen arrived, reassembled my phone, switched it on aaand... black screen.
Graphic chip or motherboard may be broken. I'm thinking about a loose connection because screen turned off once in a while before it never got back on. I found a user by coincidence here on xda who reported the same problem.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Don't want to forsake my dearly loved DS :'(
Next most likely would be main flex cable

Are there other possibilities as well? I'm thinking about getting a whole replacement set so I can try everything shipping costs are high since I live in germany hmmf
btw, digitizer/ touchscreen doesn't seem to work either, is this another sign that main flex cable is the prolem?
There are always more possiblities I was just letting you know what I would replace next as the most likley cause.
Having multiple phones to exchange parts is a good idea and really about the only way to test different components
And yes have no digitizer working can be a sign of a bad flex as well

Stories like this come up every time a new phone is released.
Could be defective units or defective users.
Abu Dhabi-based Sarah Shurrab, probably forced it into a 220.
Isolated incident.
Name says it all.
It happened to my ex-gf with her LG Optimus S a year or so ago. Caught fire, burned her bed all the way down to the mattress. She got real lucky that she woke up when it happened, it could have been very bad. A few android sites actually ran her story. Nothing ever came from it, of course. I had to fight with Sprint for weeks just to get them to replace her phone.

Happens with many electronics. I've seen bad AC Cords melt and laptop power jacks break and short and cause similar damage and smoke, as well as regular desktop power supplies. You will always get a few defects.
There was another story... can't find it saw it in the last day or two.. where a buy got burns on his leg from having his S4 in his pocket. I remember seeing things like this pop up way back in iPhone 3G days where it burned some guys jeans and stuff. Electronics are prone to having defects. There will always be a few. Expecting it and protecting or minimizing damage is the key.
That being said thats why I leave all my devices that I have charging over night on my nightstand next to my bed, away from anything else usually, so if anything does happen I'm right there and hopefully would be knocked out of my hibernation cycle and smell smoke. I will always unplug chargers if im going to be gone for more than 15-20 minutes as well.
I take these precautions before I had a very very close encounter with a cheap reading lamp over my bed once that decided to randomly spark for a few seconds and produce a small bit of smoke directly over my head a few years ago before tripping the circuit breaker while I fell asleep with the light on. (AC cord was red hot as well) Needless to say, I had a unpleasant awakening. Circuit breaker might have saved my life. Never want to have to wake up to something like that again.
I am definitely going to try to make that a habit as well.
