No Official Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung Galaxy S Phones - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

So its confirmed now, no official ICS update for our phones.

I do trust our devs. They will get an unofficial update for us soon.

Didn't even need to search on this one just look six threads down. Come on guys!

Yeah, really shows their commitment to their customers and their promise to support a device for 18 months.

Guys, this may become good news:

They may reconsider having ICS on sgs4g.
SAMSUNG
Samsung's Galaxy Nexus already has Ice Cream Sandwich, of course, and most Nexus S phones should have already received an over-the-air update. The status of Android 4.0 for other Samsung smartphones is less clear. Here's what we know, for now:
- Samsung Nexus S phones started getting Ice Cream Sandwich on December 16. If you own a Nexus S, you should be using an Ice Cream Sandwich device at this point.
- The Samsung Galaxy S II will get Android 4.0 in the first quarter of 2012, as will the Galaxy Note.
- The Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy Tabs were both on track for Ice Cream Sandwich, until they weren't, until they were again, maybe. Basically, Samsung claimed that they would update the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab to Android 4.0 and then announced that they would not, due to the limitations of the device's RAM and ROM to run both ICS and a bit of touch-interface software called TouchWiz simultaneously. Now, apparently bowing to consumer pressure, Samsung is re-examining ICS for the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tabs, as reported by MSN Korea.
Huffington Post
The source code was released as well..

I don't see the Galaxy S 4g on there. I only see Galaxy S. They're completely different phones. Just give up hope!

Every phone company does this- even htc. No one releases more than one, two updates at the most. Hell, Motorola was releasing phones running 1.6 on Sprint when Froyo was released.... can't make it up. Give it about six months and they will kill off the Nexus S, when the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Plus 2 is released (I made that phone up, but you get my point). They did it with the original Nexus, which had, according to the other corner of XDA, more than enough hardware to run an ICS port.
Remember guys, if you want ICS, go ahead and spend $600.00 on a Galaxy II, which will be outdated in 3 months. It's cheap.

That's how you run a business in a capitalist environment. I'm a little surprised Apple keeps rolling out updates for their devices for so long.

If any of you fellow Galaxy S users would like to give us Vibrant users a hand..

They haven't even mentioned phones that aren't SGH-T959. That's at least 2 other devices that are similar but not included.

That doesn't matter the gs4g is part of the galaxy s line.

"GALAXY S" 4G
yes it is part of the galaxy s line.
Also why the hell would samsung release ICS for an old phone and dump newer phones.
This phone is much faster than the GT-19000. It would only make so much sense.
This is a galaxy s phone.
The specs of samsung galaxy phones say either Galaxy Phone(e.g. galaxy 3), Galaxy S Phone(e.g. Galaxy S 4G) or Galaxy S II Phone(e.g. Gt-19100)
Anyway, if not then we just have to wait till most of our contracts expire.(or later) then we can get Jelly Bean(potential name for Android 5.0)

Samsung took months and months to release gingerbread,I doubt we getting anything..anytime soon

Rogers Infuse to have Gingerbread

I just read that when the Rogers version of Infuse will come stock with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This should be big news to all the devs because I'm sure they can port it to our phones.
http://www.techwafer.com/2011/06/10/samsung-galaxy-infuse-4g-heading-rogers/
Im not so sure, because i heard specs blabbed out from random sites before for the US release stating it was going to be 2.3... SO im not so sure its legit

Having a Galaxy S label on your phone makes it worth more.
let me put it this way, lets say your trying to sell it,
"Have this Samsung Galaxy S Infuse 4G" sounds more executive than "I have this Samsung Infuse 4G"
Galaxy S gives it the name it should deserve i high end phone, since Samsung has made it known that their galaxy s device line are high end devices...

Honestly, any legitimate buyer would do his/her research and realize the specs are more important than a label. Which is why I bought an Infuse.. have you seen this screen?
ha, well yeah, i guess that true, but still! Galaxy S does sound cool, or maybe its just that i have a thing for outer space...
and no i havent seen the screen on this thing
i picked up my HD2 yesterday to mess around with it, and i was like da f#@$ this screen is so small, i think im going to screen my self over with huge screens
I've actually seen several places say it is a Galaxy S phone. To me it really doesn't matter though. I love the phone, S or not.
yeah, i should just get over it... maybe in a few weeks... months...
well to start tw4 is only for the sgs2. it has been ported to and used on other roms(may bet ported to 2.2.1 on the infuse like it was for the vibrant) the sgsi9000 has gb and it is still tw3. next it wont need any "porting" from rogers. it should flash ringht on and just work! and rogers is not known to have much bloat so there wont be too many equivelents of the att apps that you need to delete.
What's the current gingerbread version?
What's the current version of Gingerbread on the Rogers Infuse? Hope it's at least 2.3.4 (so Google Talk has video/voice support)...

SGS2 already has leaked official Android 4.01 rom! When can we expect for the I727

Hey guys,
Theres a Android 4.0.1 official from Samsung released for the i9100: http://www.sammobile.com/2011/12/14/exclsuive-android-4-0-1-by-samsung-for-sgs2-custom/ . Wow it looks like they made Ice Cream Sandwich look like dog **** so do you guys think we can expect the same for our skyrocket and how long would it take!
+1 can't wait
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
that has major issues from what i hear. it will still be a while...
Do you know how many dev work on international sgs2? They have dev thread full of devs from all over the world. I can guess about 20 devs or more and they have tons of roms and kernels. We have bunch of devs too but idk who will bring it on skyrocket. I am not talking about official ics either.
They got a leak. What can we expect you asked? No one knows it may or.may not get leaked. Depends on if anyone has a friend inside.. which i dont believe anyone on ou..r forum does so dont expect a leak if it happens great but just because the gs2 did does not mean anything for us. Ours is a completly different phone..
+1 Amen... Cant wait for ICS for S/R, will keep an eye out for CM9-stable in the meantime..
Knowing AT&T, they'll want to keep their latest and greatest phone with the greatest network up to date with the greatest software, so they probably have an alpha build of ICS for our phone, just no leak.
Hate to burst people's hopes, I saw posted somewhere in Twitter that someone had leaked a document showing the unverified release dates for various phones to get ICS.. however, the Samsung Galaxy S II series phones will NOT be seeing anything on ICS until approximately April 2012.
Now I know our phones are part of the SGS2 series, but don't know if it's included in that approximate release date !!

Lmao, yeah, I'm sure AT&T really cares about updates. That's why they haven't even bothered to push out the already completed Infuse Gingerbread update, even though that's one of their most popular phones.
I guarantee you this: The international Galaxy S II LTE and/or the T989 will get their release first, and we'll all be flashing ROMs based on that long before AT&T gets around to doing an update.

Yeah, this is actually a possibility. The Skyrocket HD might come with ICS, in which case we'll have it too around the same time.
Luckily there are a LOT of popular variants of our hardware that feature largely identical internals, so I'm not too worried about us having to wait TOO long.
That's the main reason I didn't get the Captivate Glide, even though I love landscape keyboards. The Tegra internals and Samsung's lack of firm commitment on updates were enough to scare me away.
I need to know I'm going to have ICS, and the Skyrocket, Vivid, and Galaxy S II were really the only sure things for ICS on AT&T.

There's no reason to push a GB update now that Samsung has the nessesary things for ICS.

you can install TMOBILE GS2 roms with skyrocket kernel, but not any other GS2 roms.
Why does everyone try and speculate? Patience people.... Nothing is different from the original statement from Samsung and it doesn't change anything trying to interperate things differently than what they are. And NO, the Galaxy S2 is not categorized the same at the Skyrocket.

Official statements:
Samsung Electronics plan to provide the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for GALAXY devices. The platform update for GALAXY S II and GALAXY Note will start in the first quarter 2012, and other GALAXY devices will soon follow.
The ICS-upgradable devices are the GALAXY S II, GALAXY S II LTE, GALAXY Note, GALAXY R, GALAXY Tab 10.1, GALAXY Tab 8.9, GALAXY Tab 7.7, and GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus.
For upgradable models, Samsung will make separate announcements on details of OS updates schedule for each market according to market situation and carriers' requirements. [December 20, 2011]

We can use T-Mobile Galaxy S II (SGH-T989) roms, but NOT international GS2 or AT&T GS2 roms. VERY important distinction.
Our phone is the Galaxy S II LTE internationally. It's totally different hardware from the main GS2. T-Mobile's thing isn't LTE but uses the same hardware as ours for related reasons (needing a different modem than the one in the Exynos).
I think the Touchwiz will kill it. Pure 4.0 Vanilla is the best!

The Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC Evo 4G LTE are the most expensive and the same price, but it's kind of a toss up as to which one's better. I think the HTC Evo 4G LTE scores slightly better, but honestly, I don't think you'd see much of a difference in actual use. I'd guess that the Evo handles drops/falls better than the S III though, and that would be a big factor for me.
So the HTC Evo 4G LTE and Samsung Galaxy S III are the most expensive, then the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, then the cheapest is the Samsung Galaxy S II. On a few benchmark tests, the Samsung Galaxy S II using its latest OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, was faster than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. But in a few weeks, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is supposed to be getting Jelly Bean, which is supposed to be a much more refined version than Ice Cream Sandwich. I'm guessing that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Jelly Bean would be faster than Ice Cream Sandwich on the Samsung Galaxy S II.
Personally, I'd get the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, just so I could get the newest version of Android. But if you want to save $50, the Samsung Galaxy S II is a great choice too.

Debating on new phone: Galaxy Nexus or SGS3??!!

Hey guys, I'm planning on getting a new phone contract and I'm really debating on 2 phones.. the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S3.
I'm right now using a Nexus S which I'm really happy with but Rogers is offering a really nice plan extremely better than my actual one and cheaper.
I'm just looking for some opinions from you guys to help me chose.
Thanks.
I never understood this kind of a question. It is just too subjective with so many factors. If having the latest and greatest software is important go with a Nexus. If not....you really need to compare and decide what is right for you. They are both great phones. I suggest handling them both and get a good feel for each.

S3 is supposedly getting updated to JB late in the fourth quarter 2012.
If you can wait, well then I say go for the S3, if not then go with the Nexus. Personally, my opinion is to grab the S3. You are on XDA after all! Grab yourself a custom Jelly Bean ROM! (The devs are everywhere on the S3 thread, expect one to come out soon if it hasn't come already.)
Definitely the s3 if you are a rooter or not because even tho the s3 doesn't have jelly bean officially its definitely worth the wait. The s3 has a faster processor, better screen, more ram, bigger battery, and overall newer hardware! Its worth the wait for jelly bean!

SGSIII if you like modding, installing new ROM's etc,
Nexus if not as you will get the latest firmware more or less first.
hi maxx1601! i've a galaxy nexus and personally i think is the best android phone for some reason: first it's the official google phone, so the android developing is based on it and with jelly bean google resolved the few ICS's bugs; second it has a dual core cpu (is enough for all android operation and using, we don't need more), that make battery good against the gsIII that has in my opinion too many power enhancements like quad core cpu ecc. that cause battery drain under android, has got a user interface that is second to google pure UI, that personally love; gsIII has olso a too big display ( nexus display is enough bigger, good for browsing, gaming, texting, using apps like maps and google earth that need a large display). my advice is to buy the galaxy nexus, and don't forgot, the price is olso a good thing to keep in mind it costs only 399 $ now ( mabe less i don't know) and is full supported for updates by google and developers that have a solid base made by google. i hope it helps, I wish you have a good choice! :fingers-crossed:

And samsung was supposed to have ICS for most of their phones in the first quarter and didnt release them until the 3rd quarter. Thats probably the nicest thing about owning the nexus you know that you will get the updates and you will get them on time. The SIII will get support for updates until the next flagship samsung phone comes out and then they will put it on the back burner just like they did with the SII, skyrocket etc... That was the most frustrating part when i had my skyrocket, i had a phone that was less than a year old, had decent hardware and i knew it would probably never get updated past ICS, because once the SIII came out samsung and AT&T had moved on.
