[Q] Improving the dialer's display - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I was wondering if it was possible for the great dev team here to do a small tweak on the dialer: i would love to see some space between numbers wich is more convenient to "understand" a phone number.
For example on the iphones it is done so, and it feel very comfortable to read each phone number.
I am totally aware that the devs here are very very busy on a lot of very interesting stuff for our small G3, and i am very impressed by the work done on the roms and especially for the upcoming CM7 CM9 and fimg gpu!
But if someone here is interrested in doing this tweak it could be sooo great!
All my respect to the devs here who are doing such a good job!
Cheers

Well I have to say this is not exactly the same thing, but this project seem to be very interesting!
What I was trying to say is: when you are typing a phone number you see for example:"12345678" but if we could see "12 34 56 78" instead, it would be better (to me...)
I now it is a small detail but it improves the readability on a small screen like the one we have

Taking serious suggestions on new ROM

Hello,
This is adamholden85. Most of you know me from Axura. I have formed my new team(first team actually) and I want to start hearing from the community what you guys want your next ROM to have/do. I am not looking for specific apps, that you can do yourself. I am looking for things such as functionality, looks, feel and so on. Please let me know so we can put this together and really put out something amazing for you.
i know you have played with the Armani rom, as have I. give it a shot, it appears to be fully working out of the box with no funky kernels or modems (only thing i had to do was enable 850mhz)

I did like that ROM. I will look into that. We are also toying with XJPY at the moment. Thanks for the suggestion.

Running doc v 6.1.3 JPY. using xcal 2.3. I like how it is running. Jk4 modem which I think is the best available. if you are looking at jpy it appears stable and fast

it turned into the typical i9000 download method. Vol down + USB
only problem i had was with that stupid bootloader bending me over...left me with a paperweight. oh well, got a replacement the next day

In regards to look, I prefer the current look of 2.5 so I would like to see something along those likes as the base. Other themes can modify visually from there.
Otherwise, Im up for about anything I am just totally sold on that look.
Awesome, this sounds like great news. I was really disappointed to see that you got pushed out of AXURA by a couple of bad apples being louder than those of us who truly appreciate the work you do. I started flashing back on my HTC Fuze with Winmo and your and Hans thread with AXURA was the most user friendly and helpful thread I have ever found on all of XDA. I'm definitely looking forward to this. Anyway, just wanted to let you know there are lots of us out here who are truly grateful, keep up the great work!
Anyway, to stop the love fest and maybe contribute a bit to this my personal preference is to avoid the OC/UV kernels. They just seem to add possible instability and I don't think they add much real world benefit at all.
Also, just a feature that seems to have been lost in Froyo that I liked in 2.1 was the ability to change brightness by swiping across the notification bar. Not sure if that's possible, but I'm suprised that no one else seems to miss that function, haha.
Just my two cents. Can't wait to see what you have for us Adam!
I kind of liked the green icons you had in version 2.5.1 But never did have any luck installing it and getting it to work correctly. Maybe I should of done a clean wipe.
Either way v2.5 works great.
I think some of the red icons like I have seen would be nice, I do miss the 3G icon. Even if it actually is H ?

[Dev]Honeycomb on the Desire HD [Video & DL]

BazookaAce kindly made a thread at the general section to inform us about Honeycomb for the DHD, so I thought I'd make one in the development section to give it some spotlight, BazookaAce's thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958391
Here's the good stuff:
Video of Honeycomb running:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5-yO4FOAvI
Download link:
http://t3hh4xx0r.com/?p=1353
I did not develop this. The purpose of this thread is to inform our developers here about it.
Good luck.
Edit: My findings:
No wi-fi, no telephone, no brightness control, no sd-card detection, stuff on the homescreen (launcher) are not organized. And it's slow since there is zero ui acceleration.
Of course, performing a Nandroid backup is highly recommended.
This is only a plaything & it's not good enough for day to day use.
Devs work your magic
Great! Hope it will be stable soon!
Hmm. I've always thought that it was common courtesy to ask before doing. Not that I'd say no - just saying.
Here's a few tips:
Landscape via opening the camera app and then closing it.
Spare Parts -> Font Size -> Extremely Large Font. That way you can read without straining your eyes.
Also, if you allow your screen to turn off after the bootup, it will turn down brightness for each time it turns off. It won't turn it up. Weird little bugger.
Tried. Working. Buggy. Didn't expect much more though .
Wow looks like honeycomb is not only for tablets. In phone too.
This is just awesome news. U will start working in it soon.

its developed for tablets only and UI is too small for phones, its no use for it on 4 inch display !!

And from who is that video and who is the developer of it?

you've seen the video right?!!?!
As you can see in the video it's quite useable concerning the size.
But this ROM is build from the API-Preview SDK, so nor its finished nor it has any kind of source code behind.
I think as soon as google releases the source code we will see a proper Honeycomb version for our DHDs.
so, usb debugging is working and if you change the density to somthing higher you get a pulldownmenu and a forceclosing launcher but there are sings for a phone interface.

Thanks, glad you're enjoying the ROM
Just a couple of questions, so I hope you see this because I haven't posted ten times yet...
#1 no American or Canadian English setting (on initial setup, and under language settings)
#2 where's the Beats Audio?
Still love it, though. Noticeable difference in speed without background apps, and much better internal storage. Also, mildly improved battery life.

It's based on the stock EU ROM, so no, there's no American or Canadian English. I could add them but it'd add to the size of the system or no real reason. I'm sure you can live with the Queen's English
The Beats Audio doesn't show up anywhere in the UI, it just works its magic in the background. I even notice a difference when I use it with my cheap £20 eBay headphones so I know it's working
If you've seen other ROMs with the Beats Audio showing up as a setting on the UI, that's probably because they have the Music app from ROMs of newer phones. I might see if I can get that ported to my ROM now, come to think of it. Thanks for that idea
P.S. to further improve battery life, go to your sound settings and turn off all the sensor based stuff if you haven't already, that makes quite a difference!
Hmmm...haven't noticed a difference with my 20 buck Panasonics, or in my car, though that's with an FM transmitter (a good one, though).
I guess I'll live with the Queen's English, though the patriotic side of me cringes, eh?...
Weird, maybe it depends on the music you listen to. Stuff with heavy bass sounds better at least
God save our gracious Queeeeen
I just tried to stick the /system/apps folder from a Sensation XE onto my ChaCha... The ChaCha didn't like it too much. I'll experiment more later, see what I can get working. Looking around the XE ROM, there's certainly stuff here which shows whether or not Beats is working in the actual UI, so I might add some of that in if it plays nice with the ChaCha.

Glad to hear that. Ur ROM was my 1st ROM i installed after Root this device.
Original ROM is good for user who have less experience in Android or someone love Sense UI of HTC. CM7 is only good for Tech guys.
Stock ROM feel on CM7?
I have been using Chacha for almost half year now, and I like it to core. Have tried almost all ROMs so far. CWM's backup/restore functionality is pure bliss. At times when your hands are itchy, go ahead, mess up your system, do all your experiments. When done, just restore and you are back to your normal mood! Excellent!!
About the ROMs, I try them a lot, but finally do settle down to ROMs based on stock, as my daily ROMS. These are ROMS which I try my own with some experimental versions, or ones available here like from Hexgore . The reason is, there are quite a bunch of apps on Stock ROMS which are perfectly tuned for Chacha's small screen, and hence I find them more efficient than other alternative apps. Here are apps I find too good and difficult to part from.
Mail App
Dialer App
Messages App
I agree that there would be a lot better apps (like K9 for mail). But the easy of bigger icons, easy to tap organization of icons, just make be feel to stay with this mail app.
Now, coming to point, Will it be possible to get these apps work in non-Stock environment. Similar to Gapps package, if we can get to package these apps, it will be great.
I myself, will try these experiments one by one, and report my observations. But just would like to know if there are any like-minded people like me. Please comment. Thanks.

Jelly Bean Discussion Thread

This will be the One and Only thread about JB discussion. Anything JB goes here. Any other thread will be locked.

Edit: No ETA
Awesome. Couple things I want to bring to the table.
1) @prbassplayer: Asking for an ETA should be fine, people want to know an ETA for something they're excited for. The release of ANYTHING (movies, games, etc) all have people wanting a release date.
2) How new does 4.1 actually seem? Code wise I mean; do devs need to change the hell out of the GNex ROM, or is just many small things that break when tried on our phone.
3) Finally high res contact pictures
4) My friend's running JB, and it's sick. Be excited for this.
5) I was hoping for integration of Gtalk, G+ messenger, SMS, Gvoice and all their other chat programs. The ideal of a unified messaging system for all their services + SMS is just too awesome. I'm actually a little unsure why thye haven't done this.
The release of Movies, games, etc usually mean money for the production side. Devs here do this for free (apart from donations). No ETA's. Its out when the devs feel its worth releasing.
Cheers
So soon cleaning thread. On Topic JB
Cheers
Guys, drop the eta debate please. Lets keep this a thread worth having. Flame and expectation free. It is not why its here. Moving on.....
What is the feature from jb that you are most excited to see? The previously mentioned hi def contact pictures is appealing to me, since I put individual contact shortcuts on my launcher home page. Hoping for the best on this. We have some great devs working on it.

Google Now, Project Butter, and the notifications. I'm also glad they finally put in high res contacts.
Honestly, all I'm missing from Android now is a unified messaging service. They already have the potential, just need to implement it.
Also, I'm excited ಠ_ಠ will now be a native symbol between phones. ಠ_ಠ
Project butter, and notifications! High res contacts is cool but theres already an app that fixes that.. so they just making it built in finally. (as it should have already been)

The problem is Gmail contacts actually, when you wipe for a ROM it looses all the high res pics when syncing. So I'm actually not sure if this inclusion will help at all?
Also HUGE thing that people may have not noticed, watch the demo here. The program autocorrects itself for context. From know to though.
How big a change, in terms of coding and implementation, is JB? *Note, NOT asking for an ETA, Devs take as long as you want/need* I'm genuinely curious as it seems like a minor change compared to GB to ICS, so I'm not sure how that translates to kanging it for our phone.
I really like the stuff I'm seeing with Google Now. I love stuff like that. Butter is definitely a nice touch but honestly I never feel like my phone is lagging enough for it to bother me.

Enjoy a little nexus jellybean boot animation. Would be cool if it was some sort of glowing jellybean though? Hmmmmmm? Anybody up for making a glowing jellybean? =)
bootanimation
I'm using it right now. The nexus i bought off google play a few months back when it came out got the update too.

Survey says: Ideal ROM should have...

...what?
I noticed that it generally is a request randomly for this feature or that option, or requests within dev threads themselves or random threads entirely (off topic type 'wouldn't this be cool!')
So what would be cool?
What's on the wish list?
For me i'd love to experience two things:
USB OTG. My S3 broke it for me. Not having it at all was fine, but after integrating that function so fully into my Android life being without it is ...beyond words.
Second thing i'd like is to have the tv-out be an additional display instead of a mirrored display. Plugging into a bigger screen is absolutely awesome - but sometimes it would be nice to have the option of increasing my digital work space instead of just seeing it bigger.
...so not exactly easy things to start us off with, but anything goes.
What do you guys want out of your ROMs?
Maybe this can help inspire devs to include popular ideas by moving the suggestions to a neutral place instead of having to search the whole doubleshot forum for random ideas. Maybe become a good place for someone to cruise by looking for something to do.
What do we like?
great idea to post this thread!
im not one in need of too much, but i do like options. i remember when ezterry came up with the yes no binary script to attach to roms/updates i was amazed we could run code during an update that takes over the screen and user input. it took like two years for someone to polish it up and make the aroma installer, now i find that to be a must in roms. being able to adjust so much prior to even installing a rom is amazing to me still.
so yeah, i look for what most else do, stable, good battery life, speed, nice camera, better than stock. so the only thing i would add to the list everyone else has is make a rom as customizable as possible!
Cm9.1 states in OP USB on the go works on experimental kernel
I would LOVE to see a rom with all of the senses. (A lot of data) or at least 3 sense versions. (Still alot) update with the other HTC sense devices. HTC one series of course, 100%. That's it. It doesn't sound like much but even regular HTC device don't have more than 1 sense version on it so. Yea. That's a request highly impossible. But u never know. We have top notch devs over here

OTG would indeed be great.
I also like as many settings as possible--particularly colors and visual stuff. My old G1 had a CM rom that had options for every color and font used, I think, and it was great. You could change the sensitivity of the trackball and all that kind of detail stuff. That level of control is fantastic, and I'd love to have it back.
For me just additional tweaks to the sense 4 ROMs and a full fix for the wifi hotspot is very enough for me
Full backwards compatibility with all apps.
Stable overclock.

Or maybe JB with stable fast and fully functional interface and a camera that is identical to or better than the stock ds camera.
Might have better luck asking for the flying shark..

like some people said above, i feel like for a lot of people, being able to use the full power of this phone's camera is a big thing. and i guess better battery life?

There is work being done into using Android in robotics. Also, at cheap retail you can get a remote controlled helicopter with app support for flight control.
We are devs here, so having that app interaction with the remote controlled device is a springboard to what we actually need.
So the helicopter bit gives us the interaction with the device, and the flight aspect with a solid base to build on for what we need.
We can definitely get a laser from overseas that will cut things, in a portable package like a laser pointer.
I'm sure we could build something in the shape of a shark. I'm thinking we can disassemble a doubleshot and use the tv-out function to mirror the screens, then use two for the eyes. (else write a custom home screen that splits in two with a small gap between on the screen, and fit into the shark head behind where the eyes would be.)
Then the processsor and stuff would be where the brain was, and you could install the keyboard to the top or back of the head. Retain the slide mechanism, and you could have it push button slide out of the mouth or something.
So our roadblocks now:
-Shark mold. Still yet to be determined in size based on some requirements:
-Amphibious. It's a shark, right? We need to look into remote control boats and subs to see how to do this.
-Maybe mount a second laser...

...since it was pluralized.
-Some way of targeting the lasers. I'd like to add some manner of aiming, so it needs to be able to move the lasers without moving the machine. Maybe a combination of GPS and accelerometer combined with the camera for output to whatever controller we have so we can make a targeting mechanism.
Lots of prior art exists to make this from so it's about a done deal.
-Power. Power is going to be our biggest issue. The doubleshot is self sufficent, maybe get a couple of mugens and build a docking bay for them where you could plug in 4 or 5 that the doubleshot could use just like the one in the phone while it's on. Heck, we already disassembled it and built the parts into the beast, so this upgrade makes sense. If we can use this battery bank for the rest of the machine - lasers and the flying/swimming bit, then 4 or 5 might not be enough.
-Weight. If it's gonna fly, it's already too heavy with the doubleshot. Add batteries and it's a serious hurdle to overcome. Helicopter blades aren't gonna cut it so this:

So now we are off to model rockets, and the solid fuel rocket engines. It's okay to refuel a one-burn stage of flight now because that's how that would work. We have many, many years of hobbyist activity to pull from for materials and knowledge.
We can set up a multi-stage flight mechanism and having the doubleshot in the machine allows us to control when those stages ignite, not just one setting off the next.
Hell, we may even be able to fit a rotating barrel or three of engines in the belly of the shark that will serve up stage after stage of engines to be ignited for continued flight. At this point we may very well be looking at orbital capabilities. Why not - go big, right?
Maybe a parachute would be a good thing to incorporate, and being as it's a frickin' shark, we can splash-down for landing somewhere. So play with it by a lake or something. You won't have to go get it, because it can swim, so you just pop out the propeller from the underside-rear, located internally behind the rotating top-serve engines, and drive it to where you are.
Bonus points if on a dock or boat so you don't have to beach it to get it.
(thanks for giving me an outlet for something creative to wander through while printing a ton of pictures)
+ 1 for full camera function. Also, not a huge deal at all, but the CAPS/ALT LEDs function would be nice too.
I might be alone with this one, but I remember in the G1 days, when I press the phone icon to make a call and just start typing the name of a contact, it would automatically search my contacts and start showing matching names, and I could quickly call someone. Some DS ROMs do this, some don't, but it's a cool, quick way to call someone who's not on the recently called list.
Really, I'm just listing the minor things in CM 9.1 that bug me in an otherwise perfect ROM lol
A little off topic, but since we're all speculating: being able to boot from SD card would be boss.
edit: seems this is already possible with an app

Although I know a couple of other things too, something I've just wished is that we could use the original DS camera in any ROM we wanted AND it would be really handy if it came with IR features for pics & video. Upgradable RAM would be a GREAT feature too.....maybe up to 2gb...if you think of just a HW feature.

Remember that internet tough guy who claimed he had a fully-functional AOSP ROM that used the DS camera to the full extent but wouldn't release it because no one wanted to donate to him? That post reminded me of him for some reason.

Why? CM9.1 is improved in almost every way over CM7.
I am also a fan of the bluetooth controller bit. Sixaxis app and a ps3 controller - especially one without the rumble pack - is pretty handy. Remote camera shutter trigger, for one, it's not just good for games.
Also think that codec support for a variety of audio/video filetypes should be built in. Working avi support for one. I have gigs and gigs of video i've shot and converted to avi because over the years digital storage space has not been as prevalent or as cheap as it is today.
One day i'll have everything converted to .mp4, but this is years of home video we are talking about. I'd like to play it to a tv through the device without it crashing sometime in the next calendar year, which won't be happening with having to convert it all to .mp4 first.

No detail too small - and i'd hardly dismiss any part of the hardware not functioning properly as no big thing. I don't think that's being unreasonable?
Sometimes it can be a convoluted process on the dev side to get the most basic of things working right. In the context of a wish list the various little things that bug people, or that they think would be cool to have are the gems this thread is aiming to find.
I like this thread! I agree with most people's answers.
We definitely should have working TV out.
We should have our Alt and Caps light working and all other capabilities of the harware keyboard as it was THE reason I bought this over Sensation at the time of purchase
DS camera should be included or at least an equal or better replacement. Losing face detection, burst shot, panorama, and 1080P is not a step forward.
What I hear people saying is...(or maybe it's just how I feel) our phone has some really great features out of the box and it would be nice if we could take that strong base and develop it further to add more options and tweaks without having to sacrifice the best features of our ROM. Maintaining these features and bringing ICS or JB to the table would be fabulous but honestly, if we just made our own base ROM more feature rich, I could live with that....maybe dress it up with some better themes.
It's those little things missing from ROMs that make me always come back to the stock based ROMs. I just brought Netflix to a friend's house last night by hooking my phone to his TV and I caught him up on Walking Dead. I'll personally take that ability over a few points on a benchmark or something.
Trackpad wake/sleep is another for me. I LOVE that when I'm on a stock based ROM like Bulletproof and MikTouch that when I hear a notifaction sound of a text, I can comfortably hit the trackpad to wake the phone but not unlock, read the text and then put the phone back to sleep with the same button.....same thing when I want to check the time.
It's the little things...
Oh yeah that sixaxis feature that Blue6IX has been hoping for since day one does sound pretty awesome!!

Just hit me (my bad if anyone else mentioned this) that annoying issue with the power button where at the same time to goes to sleep and pulls up the "power menu?" Not sure if that's what its called.

I know that was an issue on the GB ROMs. Which are you running?
