Data throttling - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm certain my carrier is throttling my speeds and I need a fix asap. Does anyone know how to stop data throttling? I know other phones had solutions to it. Someone please help!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

You don't even mention what model nexus you have, or even the carrier, if a fix exists how is anyone supposed to help you without that basic info.
Follow the leader @corythug

i9020T - Nexus Beam 4.1, Glados 2.3
Carrier - Wind Mobile in Canada (Same frequencies as T-mobile AWS)
Limit - 5GB a month before they throttle (I'm nowhere close to that)
Any other info needed?

That's good man, was just trying to make your post easier for others to help, me personally I don't know of a way around carrier data throttling. How are you measuring your data use? Apps and things on the phone don't record 100% so you might just be at your limit.
Follow the leader @corythug

I'm only at 1.5 so I highly doubt it. I'm measuring from their website which tracks each user. Someone please help, if it works properly I'll donate.

Data "throttle"? So do you mean you're already capped? First call and complain. Second run a speed test. Speed test.net is my app of choice. Thirdly if its anything like tmob, its all server based throttle. Meaning the only way to stop it is if they do it for you. Yea there are work a rounds but only if you dont restart your phone. (Some)
Go over to say, the my touch 4g forum and check there. I know they had tons of ways and ideas to "make it work" also mentioned which files to remove out of your system.
Best of luck

Please state which carrier you have.

Before blaming carrier for throttling cuz like you said your nowhere near your limit could also be issue on their end can try contacting them
Try flashing stock kernel to rule out kernel issue
Think i read other people have had random bandwidth issues with custom kernels..I don't remember what kernel or version.
Could always try reflashing radio or another version(make sure its for your phone)
Can obtain stock kernel from brainmasters thread 3rd post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399273

Fresh out of the weekend since their support page was updated. A 5-3 release makes sense. Hopefully the radio version is different than the leak, which is reboot happy due to the radio. Software versions match though.
Thanks for the details. I look forward to the official, the leaked was not very stable.

i apologize if this info was already posted. I was just trying to share some info i just noticed. as many people have stated, i have not seen an actual date of release. I also have access to phones a few days before they are released so if there is anything i can do to help the community, please let me know. i have a thunderbolt, and being an employee, i can have my phone replaced whenever needed so i am willing to try pretty much anything (guinea pig anyones software). so if any dev wants me to try something i am more than welcome to.

Also, I'm sure everyone here would like early impressions on new phones.

How many people are rooted.

Please if your rooted just leave a small message. I'm doing a survey to see how many android users are rooted. Only one reply please.

Good luck getting every single rooted person to post in this topic.
What is the survey for?

This is about the dumbest thread I've seen in a while and that's saying something. Survey says?.....dumb!
ropodope
Decks v1.3d + LEE!
*looks at feet* Nope, I'm not rooted. I dont think I've ever been. My phone is though.
Most of the people here on XDA have rooted phones. What are you going to use the data for? You can't do much with the data you will collect here.
Ask Carl Sagan...billions & billions & billions....
I'm going to compare people rooted to the number of android phones currently used. I'm a computer science major and im arguing that there are more people rooted then others think. Also my main point is the benefits of root
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
It's probably going to be like a 100,000:1 ratio. Vast majority run stock.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
....
this wont prove anything, the majority of people that own rootable phones dont even know what rooting is. and asking on xda whos phone is rooted to compare to rest of the android users isnt a fair proportion.... most ppl on xda root their phones but xda users represent the minority of the population of people that own android devices.

If you want to do a real survey, you would have to randomly select at least 500 android users. You probably want 800-1000 users to keep the margin of error reasonable.
What you're doing here is the wrong way to do a survey. You will get very skewed, worthless results.
I want the survey to be bias and favor me. But this forum isn't turning out well. All I wanted was a simple yes I'm rooted. Not explanation. So please close

y dun TS just make a poll @@

Every poll about this is pointless. Sure here on xda we're all rooted, but truth is most people in the world don't. Just my 2 cents...
I have to agree. Polls like this will prove nothing and as you stated that you only posted this to try and lean the report in your favor instead of real facts. I will close this.

The Carrier IQ isn't affecting certain website that I can see. All it does is collecting user's data. Which I don't like.

There isn't even conclusive evidence that carrieriq is enabled on the skyrocket so people need to chill.

Even if it is is, MOST of the things people are paranoid about with CarrierIQ, the carrier can ALREADY do! IE: See what sites you visit, your texts, your phone calls. They have had this ability for a long time, carrier side.
But doesn't having this on the phone also eat away at precious battery life ? By the way, is this on both the OSG2 and sky rocket?

Disabling Phone Features to make a Cappy into a Audio/Video/Game/GPS only unit...

I've tried a bit of searching and while there are a few threads about how to disable phone features, there is no discussion of anyone making a specific ROM that would that would focus the Captivate (or any Galaxy S I suppose) into a Media Player device. No idea how hard that would be and whether it would be as easy as taking an existing ROM and just rearranging and deleting the phone stuff.
Seems that with ICS being designed to work as both a Tablet and Phone OS, you could accomplish this with relative ease. I'm not a coder or ROM developer though, so I could be completely wrong on that too.
At the very least, the battery life would almost certainly increase if the phone never even tried to use the antenna or look for cell service. Seems like it might run smoother too and processing emphasis could be rearranged.
Any thoughts?
Here ya go... Captivate Touch

Well, before rooting is always good to check that the device has no hardware issues. Try doing a factory reset and see what happens. Try pulling the sdcard and see how it behaves for a day.
If is still misbehaving, then take it to warranty....rooting will not fix hardware issues. Then, when u are sure that no hardware issues are the cause of the problems, come and visit us in the IRC channel in my signature...the Hack Kit is still there....

Also if I'm allowed to put my two cents in here... but charge to 100% and as it dies check the percentage if it reboots write down the percent. Do it until it dies fully charge it and repeat. If the numbers match up its the battery I had bought this phone used. It rebooted at 96% and 42%. Got a new battery and no more random reboots
