[Q] First Time Flashing. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hello, This is my first time flashing a galaxy s2. I have flashed a captivate and an x10 but thats it and i followed a walkthrough.
can someone please post step by step instructions on how to install a custom rom for stock.
so i need help rooting, getting cwm, and installing the rom, and kernel.
also its a rogers version if that means anything.
also can you answer some questions?
1. Is it possible to install a ROM without voiding my warranty (tripping the counter)
2. is it worth it to oc?
3.what rom would you suggest? i dont need insanely good battery life. its performance over battery. but i do need it to last through at least a day of moderate usage.

BTW this thread starts Dec 4th, so begin at that date.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376027
Follow the link above.. it's my own slightly embarrassing, BUT successful rooting experience
The folks on XDA are AWESOME!!
I still haven't tried a different ROM, but I'll get there!
One more thing, on my phone to get it into down load mode, it was press Volume DOWN ONLY and power.... NOT Pressing both volume up and down.
Volume DOWN + Power... ONLY!!

thanks for the reply. ill take a look at that thread

general questions after rooting :)

Evening all,
Looking for a bit of direction. I'm new to this all, so please do forgive my lack thereof understanding. Okay, so I rooted the phone and installed clockworkmod along with superwipe, a specific radio (was on the page + recommended ) along with android revolution hd 3.6.1.
Can someone explain to me what a ROm is? I'm assuming it's the Android Revolution HD bit I now have on my phone + overclocked processor, etc. yes? Also, I stumbled upon the forums after purchasing an Anker battery. Are ROMs specific to OE parts? IE can I run the anker battery with my phone + custom ROM with no issues? Lastly, (lol) can someone please tell me how clockworkmod works? I installed it mainly after reading various threads. I don't even understand what's it's freaking for! The clockworkdmod isn't the actual ROOT, is it? I honestly can't seem to figure out what makes rooting so special -- aside from the fact that it's overclocked now. I thought rooting would be equivalent to jail breaking -- getting free apps, etc.. What exactly can I do with the phone, now ROOTED? Thanks for reading fellas! Would GREATLY and sincerely appreciate your time and information!

A rom is the firmware that the phone is running. Actually, clockworkmod is a recovery, you can access to it by powering off your device and then pressing volume down + power button. With it, you can backup and restore your current rom in case something goes wrong when you flash a new rom or other stuff.

Before you do that make sure that you go to settings then power and make sure that fast boot is off... Some roms come with an advanced power menu so when you trying to power down to go to recovery some you can restart and have it go right to recovery
This is one app youll want for sure and heres a vid to show you how it works

[Q] Samsum Galaxy Fit No Boot

Greetings.
It doesn´t boot.
First details:
Galaxy Fit rooted and 2.3.4 Gingerbread (worked fine)
I downloaded rom-manager and wanted to change to custom roms.
So far.
As I tried to install clockwork I found this in your forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339640
and did everything exactly written there
then restartet, started rom-manager and chose the first option (Clockworkthingy).
As there was a choice of the device, I didn´t find my device and chose the last in list (which did´t work and then I picked the first in list and accepted.
downloaded syanogen 7.0 and after download and backup-chose it told me it would reset and start in recovery ... that was the last I´ve seen from my galaxy ...
Is it broken now.
Please help!
note: tried to start recovery with vol+, home and power as well as usual way to start it. without success
Come on. Some of you Guys are able for sure to tell me, if it is hopeless or there IS something I can do to get it working again.
I know nearly nothing about Smartphones and stuff so
Please!

Sorry to say that your phone is bricked.
First, rom manager doesn't support your device.
Second, you are an idiot that you selected unknown device from list to make it work.
Third, the thread doesn't have any tutorial about rom manager it is CWM that is meant to be flashed using odin.
Fourth, I probably this is hard brick and nothing can be done.
IN MY VIEW GO TO THE SAMSUNG SERVICE CENTER AND TELL THEM THAT YOU LEFT YOUR FOR CHARGING OVERNIGHT AND ITS NOT BOOTING.
THEY WILL SURELY HELP FOR FREE AS THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU DID AND THIS IS AN APPROPRIATE REASON.
Thank you for your honesty.
Your phone still can be fix up. Your phone not brick yet.. Your phone might get bricked if it running out of battery during flashing, like a half way flashing, then you are in the worse case scenario.
Recovery mode unavailable? Forget about recovery since it has been.broken. What important now is to get access to download mode by pressing vol down + power + home key. If you can access download mode, then your phone can be fixed in 5min.
Read this, before you go any further, if you sure that you already successfully flashed any rom before it went brick. Just do this simple step, for cm7, u need siyah kernel, go download (siyah 2.1.1 .tar)... Not .zip.
Remove your battery then put it back, get into download mode then flash siyah 2.1.1 with Odin 1.85.if your phone already flashed cyanogenmod7, then your phone should boot up and work properly.
If it doesnt work, click the link on my signature, follow all steps provided tp get back your to work as stock. Then start flashing again.
Ps : dont use backup, dont use romanager.

My guide is for SGS2 International. Not ATNT, please find stock rom for your phone version. But the flashing method are just the same..

Thank you for your efforts neobirdrio, but as I wrote above, nothing works.
No combination with vol+ or - and the 2 other HW-Keys.
But if we are still in Topic, what exactly do I have to do with an intact Galaxy fit to flash it to a custom ROM.
What Custom ROMS would run with it?
Where Do I get the Newest Version?
And is it worth changing it?
I wanted something special, something faster than Gingerbread and (of course the original Froyo on it), including something needs less Space.
Could you advice me?
(I ordered a new one swince it happened)
Try read this post,

Latest stock firmware for galaxy fix is 2.3..which is gingerbread.

Still trying this out.
Did it in this way press three Keys, push batery in and so on ... One time on my netbook it came to life by meaning system told me, that it installs driver (seemed to be recognized right) and ODIN told, there is a connection. I started ODIN (which was prepared to do Gingerbread onto it) But it did nothing. I am not sure if I startet Odin with Adminrights, soooo ... Do now backup of the partition, put a much earlier backup on my PC and try it again (I am running out of PCs, so I simulate, that this is a new Computer )
I keep you informed.
Thanks again so far.
Tried it again, but it didn´come back to life
So Thanks to all ppl helped me.

I was fuclking frustrated when trying to CWM / ROOT / CUSTOM rom my charge.
I have rooted and installed more roms than i can shake a stick at with my other phones.
But the lack of information on sooooo many of the dev threads that leave out soooooooooooooooooooooooo much info made my head spin.
First of all.
Odin is a program that you can install clockword mod with, as well as some custom roms.
Clockwork mod is a recovery / install tool that you install to be able to install custom roms and packages.
Even installing clockwork mod is a hassle, often you have to install it with odin and select, dont auto reboot. then pull the usb and then the battery.. then you have to hit the VolumeUp button + power + home to get into cwm.. and hopefully it will stick..
Once you get cwm installed you have to download a rom..
There are many of them, i went with a package that you load via odin instead of installing from clockwork mod.
i went with a package that was a stock 2.3.6 with root.
after i installed it, it was recommended that you wipe devlink cache, system cache.
finally after i rebooted i finally had a rom that was rooted.
This was after 2+ hours of searching through threads, downloading way too much crap and swearing at my computer for the lack of quality directions.
Usually XDA is rife with STICKYS that are easy to follow.
The charge forum is quite the opposite.
If i was not tired / drunk and frustrated i would post a correct HOW TO thread.. that i would imagine would not get stickied.

Hey bro, no need to get frustrated, you tried too hard to learn all at once. Let talk about what you have on your phone and what you want to achieve? I will take you through step by step.
Another thing I want to clear with you about Odin and CWM. They both are two useful tools to flash rom/kernel etc.. If kernel or full rom image are created in a ZIP format or extension, you use cwm. If a rom/kernel created in a MD5 format or extension, you would use Odin.
For example; the new FP1 kernel was made in both format so you have a choice to use either to flash.
Summary:
1. If the file ended with ZIP extension like "FP1_kernel.ZIP", you would use CWM to flash.
2. If the file ended with MD5 extension like "FP1_kernel.MD5", then you would use Odin to flash.
In order to use cwm, it has to be installed on your phone. cwm was created in MD5 extension, so you need to use Odin to install cwm to your phone. Once cwm installed on your phone, in order to access it, you need to hold Vol up+home+power button to get to it, then you can use it to flash zip file.
Odin is an execution PC file (.exe), you download and install on your PC and it used to flash MD5 file. In order for Odin to talk to your phone, you have to put your phone in "download mode". By remove battery, plug in usb cable between your PC and phone, press Vol down button, this will put your phone in download mode, now you re insert battery back to ensure a stable data transfer between your PC and phone. Without put back battery, data transfer may fail. After this, Odin is ready to flash Md5 file to your phone.
Like I said, let me know what's on your phone and what you want to achieve, I can help you step by step to get it done. After you have some practice, you will understand what involved and how to use them. Cheers!!!

yeah.. i should have just read through the forums a day or so to figure out the odin / rooting / rom process for this phone.
But i am a seasoned vet in the android world and got pretty frustrated, mainly because a few of the other xda forums made me a little jaded by the process.
I have a fully functioning 2.3.6 rooted charge with CWM and the edited build prop to keep the Unwanted ota updates from bugging me.
Thanks for not flaming the f-out of me.
BTW have yall come across a thread about sandblasting or sandpapering the back cover of the phone to make it less slippery? I have sweaty f-ing hand, i know gross, but its a slippery phone for me.

Not a problem, you can get a back cover from ebay for a few bucks and it will do the trick.
Seems like you already knew how to handle cwm, why don't you flash (using cwm) FP1 eclipse rom, kernel and radio, so you will be on the latest O/S?

brand new galaxy S 4g question

Hi guys! my friend just got a new galaxy S 4g and asked for some help customizing it. Right now, it's on stock 2.3.6 KJ6. gingerbread out of the box. I did some searching, and have a few questions:
1. Is ADB the only way to get it into download mode on kj6? I read in another thread that this particular firmware makes it difficult. volume down and power isn't working.
2. from stock, I'd like to get it rooted and flash a custom ROM and kernel. Should I flash one of the bhundven heimdall one-clicks? would you recommend the SMS kj6 or kj1? what's the difference?
If not, is there a better way to get on an updated root with CWM and kernel?
3. After this, I should be able to just flash a ROM correct? Finally, what's a good ROM for battery life and especially stability? I am leaning towards Valhalla Black right now but it's been awhile since I've been here.
4. weird question, is it OK to do all this without a sim card and SD card? lol...

1. To get into download mode take battery out then put back in ..hold volume down and stick a usb in comnected to u cpu then dwnld mode for...
2.to start out flash the kj6 oneclick with phone in dwnld mode..directions in post of oneclick...then get into cwm ..hold power+vol up and down..flash any kernel..probably fbs newest one..
3.yes u are good to flash any rom now..follow directions percistly and remember to backup .. as far as battery life goes..valhalla black, unnamed rom, and sweet child of mine..
4.u can do all this without sim but i think u might need sd to copy over roms..or thrmen u cant flash from cwm

thank you! yeah i realized the sd card thing after i posted lol. oneclick makes it so easy compared to before @[email protected]
Or you can follow the first link in my signature.
thank you sir. your guides are quite something. is there any benefit to using the first link over the second one-click link? one-click seems to be very easy and less likely for something to go wrong.
Whichever you are more comfortable with. Either way - back up efs folder. If you follow the second guide, when you are finished you can go back to the first guide for directions to flash a custom ROM.
You can also follow my guide if you would prefer (i only offer that up as I offer three ways to do what you want)

Will you put your guides back up or at least give me a link to the heimdall for dummies. Finally decided to start using it instead of odin and it GONE! LOL

Hello SGS4G XDA section! Newbie needs a lot of help!

Hey guys i`ve recently managed to get an SGS 4G Vibrant ( i believe that i am at right place to seek for help ) , i have the T-Mobile version of the phone. I need help switching to different/better ROM, at this moment the phone uses the stock one ( or i believe so ). I`ve been tru the threads and saw that there are a lot of stuff posted about what you need to do/have to flash a rom, but i just cant understand the right order of doing the things.
If its posible can someone really quick just post the steps for the guide for flashing a ROM to the phone. I have previous expiriance with android phone and i am aware how thing go, just as i said i cant get the right order of puting all the thing at one place.
For the phone i used to have was like, first i had to install an stocklike ROM which had recovery, but before that i had to get some kind of software for LG that alowes to flash the rom via download mode. So is the same here? It would be awesome if someone can link or atleast type all the software and other thing i need to have installed to make this work. For now what i have is the USB drivers for Samsung.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, that helped, not sure how i missed it. I am gonna write down what i did so far, so you could see if i messed up something.
I rooted the phone via SuperOneClick 2.2, then i installed the SGS Kernel Flasher, and then flashed the kernel, my current phone was running an 2.3.7 android, so i used the Basic with a Twist`s kernel ( i hope i did it right ), and now the phone rebooted and some different boot screen apiared with some Robotic Chick speeking some stuff, BUT for now the phone load to there, it doesnt wannt to load.
So did i messed up something, or ....
Can you go into recovery by holding Volume Up+Volume Down while pressing the power button and as soon as the SGS 4G splash appears leaving the power button ?
If so and you can see CWM Ver. 5.0... then kernel was successfully flashed.
You shouldn't be getting a bootloop.
What ROM do you want to flash ? If you want to flash GB then I suggest Barebone/Valhalla of some kind.
If you want ICS - Go to the CM 9.1 thread and follow the instructions. After that you may change to AOKP or MIUI or all the rest of the ICS ROMs you wanna try.

I am sorry I do not know how to get you back to where you started before flashing the wrong ROM.
Good luck
Well, it wasnt a bootloop, it just loaded to some point and stoped. Gladly still got the download mode and brought it back to normal to how it was. Thats why i came here to ask, `couse there are too much similiar sgs`s and stuff for them here, i just got confused whats what. Got to start from scratch anyway, at least i didnt bricked it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1 <---- That's a post by Lumin 30 with a guide on how to get from stock to custom GB. If you want to get to ICS then use CWM 5.0.x.x.
