[Q] Android 4.0 and iOS 5 - General Questions and Answers

which is the best system???

I would say its an impossible question to answer
Having played a little with the two systems, they both have plus points and negatives.
From being an Android user, i would be slightly biased and say the ICS is more appealing, as google dont tie your hands and lets you have a bit of a play with settings etc....

I would say its the Android 4.0

There's no true answer to this question, it's just a topic of personal preference. Some prefer iOS for it's simplicity, and others Android for it's customizability. Of course, there are other determining factors, but that's just one example.

I beleive that Android is on top (which in fact it is) and I'd even preffer WM7 better than iOS 5

Apples or Oranges ?
Asking this on XDA, you should be able to guess the answers.

Both have their cons and pros

Yeah, You can't really compare linux based software with apple based software
That's like XDA Without phones.

In Your Opinion What's The Best OS

So many to choose from these days.... eh? I'm a loyal Windows Mobile fan myself but let's see what everyone else thinks! Feel free to express your opinions in this thread about your favorite OS.
They all have their strong and weak points, but for me, my OS of choice is Android
As much as I love Android, I still feel like the iPhone OS feels the most polished OS out of the group. Sorry, but that's just my personal perspective. But if it were only based solely on features and function, it would be Android! Unfortunately, aesthetics and usability are big factors for me in an OS and Android just lacks those characteristics at the moment.
I've tried a few including WM for 4 years. But, I've settled on Android...for now
I'd say Android, mostly because it's based off the Linux kernel, making it extremely versatile. I used to love WM because of its open-ness, but Android is a much more polished OS compared to WM, yet with all the customization and openness that WM has (until WM 7.x). Considering I'm running Android on my iPhone 2G, my Kaiser, and my Rhodium, Android wins on the versatility and customization factor.

While yes, some people don't like the look of Android (I don't mind it), I most certainly don't think that the iPhone's "all gloss and shiny" is any better.
Looks like another thread involving Android versus iPhone comparison, though other OS are also going to be discussed. I would rather keep my mind open and try to understand as much as possible what each has to offer first before making judgement. I'm trying to do that in this thread. You're invited to participate.
One important consideration is what sorts of hardware choices the OS let you have. iPhone is extremely functional, fast, smooth, visually appealing, and customizable, have great applications and ecosystem, but doesn't give user the choice of a 4.3 inch screen like Android. I'm hoping to look for something positioned in between the iPad and iPhone.
Voted for android, after having tried an iphone 3gs for fit and having bought a desire instead.
My background has been a long line of symbian and win mobile phones, starting with p800 and finishing with the htc hd.
Don't get me wrong, the iphone was good in terms of user experience and apps, but I don't like non or pseudo multitasking and the apple attitude towards devs and development.
That was the same reason I didn't wait for a win 7 phone, as it seems that microsoft is heading the same way.
Meego might be good, but right now it's only on paper.
Sorry for referring to slightly off topic OSs but there is an "other" choice on the poll, no ?

This I do agree.
Maemo followed by Android followed by Symbian
If the OS is taken by itself with no external factors (e.g. apps), then I would say Palm's WebOS as the best OS. If it was the OS with everything it comes with, then iPhone OS is my favorite.
I voted for the latter. It's silly to think of an OS by itself when it can be augmented by apps.
WinMo for now, but ask me again in 6 months to a year, defiantly Android.
Windows Mobile!
I think there is another thread with same subject...canĀ“t find it
Same here!
WM all the way
Android ftw !!

I've heard lots about Maemo. I'm going to look into that one, sounds nifty
android for me...i should noe ive used them all...

Android and Smartphones

Hey guys I just wanna ask you a quest :
Do you believe Samsung, or other brands just like HTC or maybe LG, would have been as successful as they are now...if they had no Android OS in their devices?
IMO I guess the answer is : NO WAY. Hardware is not the only essential thing, and I really believe Software (instead of hardware) has made the REAL difference
I'd like to know what do the world think about that
Sent from my Xoom on Tiamat
I think they've all been spamming the Marketplace with countless devices which are, at best, clones of every other device out there and are selling devices on the strength of pure numbers alone. Basically a brute force approach.
If Android had never been created, each Manufacturer would still be pushing out twenty Windows Mobile clones every year instead, and then that platform would still be dominating the Market. (Fruity products aside.)
hardware and software go hand in hand...
hardware makes the phone and gives it the capabilities that we all want...
but without good software to go along with that then the phone is useless...
if android had never come along there would be something else to take its place. maybe windows phone would be more popular, maybe webos would be bigger than ever...maybe ios would rule the world...whatever...
i think a better question would be if android hadn't come along which current os do you think would be the most used on devices?
Not so sure: IMO, Android is a great competitor do iOS, which was one of the main drivers of smartphones in the market with its App Store and rich functionality (when I had an N-Gage, I already enjoyed tons of community apps, but had no market)
Would they go far with Windows Phone 7? Maybe. But not with Windows Mobile, which was iOS' competitor at that time.
I'm pretty sure the brands you mentioned would be selling with success even if Android didn't exist.
They are industrial giants (samsung especially), which can invest huge amount of money on development. Some say they lack imagination, but I must say I'm impressed by the pace they keep improving our techno gadgets.
The real thing is what would the smartphone world look like without android.
I owned a bada smartphone and every time I was using it I felt a chain around my neck, hands and feet...
We've been really lucky with the path smartphone took: android is free, android is open-source.
Industry may provide the fittest and strongest bodies, but it is we, the people, who provide the SOUL and let the magic happen.
I find this pretty amazing

Windows fans

I'm so curious if there are any die-hard fans for Windows like there are for Android and iOs.
Why do you like Windows so much? What are the advantages?

Not like Android and iOS,
But many level headed users will recognise what WM and WP is all about and they will appreciate it, but the don't go shouting about it.
From my own personal experiences and in no way is this supposed to be a sweeping statement generalising all android users, but I personally find that there is some kind of superiority complex with some iOS and droid users
Its really annoying, some seem to come on to Windows forums just to slag it off. Its a sad day when any member on this site feels the need to do that, to any OS forum ( same goes to WP WM users doing it to droid forums)
another sad series of events that seem to be taking place is that there is an influx of "new" users who and usually droid owners and seem to feel the need to boast about how good their OS is.
WM is the only true pocket PC out there, it was let down but OEMs and carriers, it is however an amazing OS, even today, and you will find that many day to day tasks are still run by WM devices, it was however slow, and not good for games but in every other aspect it outclasses all competition
WP does what it says on the tin, its a phone, and the things it does do it does incredibly well, yes others can do more, but where they overlap, in my experience, WP usually wins hands down. If you want a phone that works with minimal fuss, WP is, in my opinion, the best (reasonably priced) device out there.
that is not to say the other OS choices are any worse, or better, its just they target a different user, and the people who feel the need to slag off WP etc would do well to realise that.
oh whilst im at it, another annoying event is that since droid has taken over, even the news posts are condescending towards WP, its really frustrating that personal opinion cant be removed even from the headline news.

I'm sure there are. You aren't going to see as many fans of any kind because WP has such a small market share. As the market share grows human nature dictates you will see more irrationally exuberant people.

A search of this forum will reveal countless (ie too many) "Windows Phone vs" threads. There seems to be a sick need by iOS and Andriod users to pour into the Windows Phone section of the forum and start thread after thread on this topic... which the mods eventually lock. I on the other hand have never felt the need to start a thread of any kind in the Andriod section of the forum. So what does that tell you?
Anyway just search and all shall be revealed... along with a boat load of lies.
Advantages: I think WP7 is fastest and simplest OS
Disadvantages: Cannot be updated to WP8 (only gets WP7.8 update) not have VPN and Arabic support.

I loved WM because it was the best OS in that it could do anything, and was completely customisable. I could set my phone up to have any and all buttons perform any action, and the start/home screen could display anything that I wanted, no other OS came close. It's downfalls were not marketing itself to consumers (instead of just businesses) and as dazza9075 said - OEM and carrier support. And lastly apparently not being 'finger friendy'.
Android (or at least the few ROMs I flashed onto my HD2, and the phones of friends I played with for a few minutes) was just a copy of SPB Mobile Shell and isn't truly customisable. I say customisable in the sense that I can make WM look and behave how I want, Android seems to just be looks, which isn't even close to being actually customisable.
IOS, well that's just a glorified App launcher as far as I can tell. Not really in the same area of discussion, and is only a success due to marketing.
I bought a WP simply because I have faith in MS to produce a better OS than the others; feel a little bit of brand loyalty; refuse to join the Apple cult, pay more for the phone than the equivalent Android/BlackBerry/Symbian/WP/etc phone, or have a percentage of my contract paid to Apple under their royalties contract with the carriers; and lastly, despite WM becoming obsolete, I felt that Android was a step back compared to WM.
As far as answering your question about advantages, now that there is so much focus on Apps (I remember when we called them Progs (programs) there isn't so much an advantage. And I couldn't really care less about social integration that WP has, twitter, facebook et al bore me with their tedious rubbish (do I really care that my workmate had a sandwich for lunch?!), but I have found that where WP can't do something that I did on WM, or isn't as customisable as WM, it does have a very simple solution within the OS which doesn't require an App or some kind of hacking/ROM flashing to do it.

Are you sure that we dont get all the languages that wp8 gets? i wouldnt be so sure just wait some time, Microsoft is working on new features, new custom ROM's are not far away

And to reply to the question about WP7 fans, i'am a fan i have a WP7 news site but in Bosnian language because here it is not so wide spread like in the US or Germany, but i would like to help to spread the Os here on the Balkan. and i success for now, i have over 12.000 visits since may. and steady growing. i have also an app for wp7 with which my users can see the news in Bosnian language from my blog right on their Windows Phone's. All that for the love of the OS, because it gave me such an better experience and live comfort. my previous phone was an Nokia e71. Now i like WP7 and WP8. and i know that we gonna have some new features. but thats an another story. oh and my blog i wp7novosti.blogspot.com, "WP7" is WP7 "novosti" is news (explain) right now i'am saving for a domain to better support Windows Phone 7 and 8.
I'm tired of flashing roms, updates and scripts just to enjoy my Android phone. Maybe I'll try a WP in the future.

Why Android?

There are a million videos and articles regarding a question many people have.. "Android or iOS?" (You could say Android or Windows as-well but I mean.. )
Anyways, the answer it always the same.. "It Depends Man"...
-_-
Okay sure, it depends, and honestly I agree with that. It 100% does depend.
So that's why I'm making this thread.. I'm curious what YOUR reasons are. It may be as simple as "I like the way the Galaxy S6 looks" or maybe you really appreciate the open-source qualities of Android and Google.
I would like to hear your reasons, because it truly does depend. I don't believe Android > iOS or vise-versa, but I do have reasons I enjoy Android more.. overall, for my personal use! I'm interested to hear everyone's specific qualities of Android that make it more enjoyable or useful than another OS. (Or maybe another OS is better for you than Android!)
Very good question
I'm not to give you the answer in detail right now
The reasons are
Open source nature(you already mentioned)
Availability(In my country, India, you can have an android phone available in all places whereas Apple and Microsoft are limited to big cities
Price - You can have an android phone, in my country for around $30, whereas the iPhone is always above $500
Development nature

Wow, it's very interesting to hear reasons like that.. have you tried an iPhone before? Or have you not ever tested one in person?
I'm curious, in your mind, what is the iPhone like? Is it something everyone near you would like to have? Or do many still prefer android over iPhone, if apple wasn't limited to specific areas?

How Android is still better than iOS

Smartphones are essential thing that can live forever in peoples hand in these days. We all knew that Android is the more usable OS than iOS. Because it is cheap and user friendly. Even uneducated peoples can able to use android smartphones than iPhones.
This is why Android is more popular. This is very common factor that we knew.
Other than this point, I need some more technical details.
Answers would be thankful.
