OK, so the GPS issue aside, I've encountered some random other problems with my Captivate. I'm JH2 with the SuperRooter tool installed. Some of these are actual problems, some are just gripes.
1 - Sometimes for no apparent reason the brightness will change. It will drop all the way down to the lowest setting and I have to go in and manually raise it up again.
2 - Google Voice has been problematic, to the point where I'm not using it any longer. Even though I've set my phone to send voicemail to my Google Voice number it only works about half the time. The other half it goes to my AT&T Voicemail. I MISS the voicemail on the iPhone!!!!
3 - Most of the time when I unplug the USB cable the icon still shows in the status bar, and when I click to turn off USB it still stays there, and only a reboot of the phone fixes it.
4 - I hate how the ring starts off soft then increases in volume, it's dumb that we can't change that.
5 - The email interface is less than desirable. Actually uit's not the interface itself, but rather a couple limitations. One, you can't move messages to another folder - so I have messages in my inbox that I want to move to another folder in my gmail account, and I don't see the option anywhere to do this, I ahve to log in to the computer to do this. Two, on my hotmail account, the other folders I've created don't even shows up, so I have no access to those messages at all.
6 - I have other random wierdness from time to time, like tonight internet connectivity over wifi just stopped working, then started working again an hour later for no reason.
7 - The only apps I miss are my GuitarToolkit, the DrumKit app, and the i.TV app which was an all in one tv guide and let me schedule my Tivo recordings...
8 - ...and of course we all know the GPS sucks!
I have about 3 days left to decide if I want to keep this device or just fork over what's left of my sould and buy the iPhone 4 (I've been a 3GS user for about a year and have been generally happy once I got it jailbroken). Most of this stuff individually isn't too bad, but put it all together and throw in the GPS debacle and, well I shouldn't have to justify to myself WHY I want to keep a phone...

You should look into K9 mail. It's an awesome app and let's you have multiple identities ala Thunderbird so that you can send from your other email addresses w/o having to set up separate accounts on your phone. Very slick program, can move between folders, has archive, junk, etc.
I don't know about the others. I took my Captivate and returned it, but passed on buying a 32GB iPhone 4 because I know one of two things:
1) If the GPS and lag are fixed and/or GPS is fixed and we get Froyo I'm back to a Captivate or,
2) There will be another upcoming phone that is more open than Uncle Stevie's vision of what he wants us to do with a phone.
Having been an iPhone 3G and then 3GS user (yep, went back to my 3GS but only for 6 weeks or so) I can say that having remembered what real multitasking is, real choice is and real options with software - I ain't goin' back. YMMV.
I'll be willing to bet that number 1 is due to your finger on the notification bar. If you slide your finger across it, the brightness will change.
2. Bug with Google Voice, not a hardware problem.
4. Ringtone starts quietly so you have a chance to catch it before it gets obnoxious. It only stays quiet for half a second, and if your phone is ringing, half a second isn't going to make or break the call.
I had a similar problem with Google Voice. I just deactivated the service for my phone number then reactivated a few minutes later, haven't had any problems since.
I'm not sure if that'll fix it for you, but you might want to give it a try--just go to your voicemail settings on the Google Voice website.

Maybe, but I would agree that the option to turn it off should be available.
I bet the brightness problem is because you can change the brightness by sliding your finger across the notification bar. It's actually a very nice feature when you get used to it.
If I were you,i would go through the google voice mail set up again. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
Also, my ringtone does not start out quiet and then gradually increase in volume. Is it possible that the ringed you have tried are just recorded that way?
Thanks for the tip ob the brightness setting.
As far as I know the ringtone thing applies to every captivate so either yours is going it and you just don't notice it or you've got a special firmware or something

I also missed my visual voicemail. I've found that YouMail is an effective if not perfect replacement (my only real gripe is it is a separate app not integrated into the phone app).
That's too bad. I literally have none of those problems.
By far my biggest problem has been GPS, like others. However, with JH2, left all at stock settings I actually have good accuracy - even after 3 days - google nav has been right on. I used cardiotrainer and went for a walk and it was again completely on - better than my old Nokia N79, better than 5m accuracy.
Initial lock times were slow a bit over a minute (default has skyhook off). I put skyhook on yesterday, so I am interested to see if my improved accuracy after initial lock continues. What I have found is that all the suggested chances in the GPS fix might help initial locks, but went to crap after a day or so - and never really had the accuracy while moving. JH2 at all stock has lower initial lock speed, but must have a gps fw algorithm change leading to much better navigation / moving accuracy.
Bottom line - I will be shocked if Samsung doesn't have a 100% GPS fix next month (or with Froyo).

I dont think you know what you're talking about in reference to Hotmail. I have a hotmail account and when you go to the browser and login to your hotmail account, all the options are there. Right in the middle of the screen is a "More" button, just click that and a list flies out and scroll down and "Move to" and the list of custom folders is right there. It has full functionality of the desktop site.
If you're trying to use the built-in email app to work with hotmail, dont. It wont work. You have to use hotmail through the web browser. Hotmail has a great mobile website.

Yes, to activate google voice for your phone you have to go to the google voice website and follow the instructions there. You have to enter your phone number and what mobile carrier you are using and then it gives you a string of numbers and characters that you must dial from your mobile phone to tell AT&T to forward your missed calls to a google voice server/phone number.
Do that and it should work fine. I did and have had zero problems from google voicemail.
If you have brightness on automatic it will change screen brightness based on light in room. If you go outside it will turn brightness up. If your in dark room it will turn brightness all the way down. You can test by covering sensor on fron with your finger and see if brightness drops. If you dont like it turn off in settings.

Make sure auto-brightness is turned off...also, like someone else mentioned, the notification bar lets you adjust the brightness by sliding across it horizontally while the gray bar is showing. Neat feature once you get used to it, but it also confused the hell out of me when I accidentally slid it. Best thing I've found is to just flick the notification bar up and down quickly (vs dragging it all the way up or down).

Assuming you've set it up correctly (which it sounds like you have, since it does go to GV voicemail sometimes), the problem does lie on GV's end. They make it wait 25 seconds before GV will actually pick it up, so your carrier voicemail will intercept it if it's set to pick up sooner than 25 seconds. Until GV lets us decide how long it takes for it to pick up, you can sort of fix this with the following workaround:
1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Send.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages (should be your gv #)
3. Dial **61*+1xxxyyyzzzz*11*30# and hit Send. +1xxxyyyzzzz is your GV #, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum
4. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.
Unfortunately this means that it will take >25 seconds for it to send to GVoicemail, but it does reliably work.
As for the GPS, I'm optimistic that the firmware fix that Samsung has leaked will solve that and our lag issues, but I can see how that would be frustrating to some who want it to work now (as well they should). Sorry to hear that you're having gripes with the phone, but hopefully these solutions will alleviate some of your issues.

This is a feature. They built in a brightness slider when you draw the notification tray down a tiny bit and slide your finger from left (dim) to right (brightest)

No offense, but your assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about is way off...
Clearly, I'm aware that you can manage folders using the web interface in Hotmail, otherwise I wouldn't have known how to create the folder initially that isn't showing up in the standard mail application. I thought it was obvious I was walking about the capabilities of the phone, as in the built in email application...
If I have to use the web interface to manage my email then what's the point of even having an email application?
The email application gives me almost the exact same functionality with Hotmail as it does with Gmail, I think you're mistaken that Hotmail won't work in the default email app. The only thing I get with Gmail that I don't with Hotmail is access to view what's in my extra folders, which really doesn't help because I can't do anything with items in those folders like move them around.

I 100% agree with you about moving email. That is one of my biggest gripes too. Also HTC DOES have this integrated into their mail program, and also folder hierarchy. I think it is just poor that Google didn't integrate these right into the stock mail app, and also that Samsung didn't in theirs.
I think not being able to take MMS photos vertically is annoying. I was used to it on the iPhone; I think vertical or "tall" images look better for Facebook mobile uploads, and I can't find a way to take them so they don't end up sideways in the MMS or mobile upload. Any ideas?
Whats reassuring is that almost all of your complaints can be address through a software update.
Its rumored that the GPS fix + Froyo update will be launched simultaneously or very close together.
I looked around and didn't see anything as specific as this, so I'll ask the question.
A lot of my notifications don't work 80% of the time, whether it's gmail, sms, or a game notification. All notifications are set to be on, but I have a theory. With Ice Cream Sandwich, there is the option to hold the back button on your phone and it will kill your app. I wonder if this might be a culprit. For instance, if I'm reading a text and hold the back button to kill the app, is it possible for that to kill the push notification as well? Granted it could be the ROM I'm using, but no one else on that particular forum has any problem like I've described. Does anyone have any ideas or has this happened on a regular basis? Most things I can live without, but if someone's trying to send me a text message, it might be hours before I think to check it and find out that hours before someone had sent me one.
Thanks in advance for any help.

what rom? how did you flash said rom? Full wipe of data/cache/dalvik? did you restore ANY data or settings with tibu and if so which ones? to me this is sounding like a bad flash. back-to-kill will only take out the active application, notification and sms retrieval is a background process and not susceptible to that.

The rom is The Collective's Redemption. I did do everything mentioned above and the only thing I used tibu for was to restore my apps, but not to restore phone settings. I haven't tried to reflash, and maybe that will be my fix. I still want to see if others might have had this happen to them.
Thanks for the suggestions Darunion.
Been running( mostly) Red for a couple of weeks. I have not seen that issue. The first flash of it did have some strange notification behavior. The contacts app would let me assign ringtones to individual contacts but would still play only the default ringtone when I got a call. Everything has been working properly since the second flash.

Hey guys. I just recently switched to a T-Mobile One S from my Sprint Evo 3D. I've loved the phone so far, but I've noticed one dumb thing about it. On the Evo (running a gingerbread ROM), when long-pressing a phone number in a text, email, webpage, etc., I get a context menu with options to call, text, add to contacts, and so on. On the One S, I don't get any of these options, it just highlights the number for copying.
Am I missing something, or is this feature really gone? Is this true for all ICS ROMs, or just the stock T-Mo one I have? My brother seems to recall something about an Apple patent infringement that made Google or the phone makers omit this feature. Can anyone shed some light on this?
If the feature really is missing, is there a way to add it? Maybe there are ROMs that have already done this?
Thanks for any info!
Thank Apple for that.
Flash a ROM with a 1.78 base like leedroid maybe, you'll lose wifi calling though. Did this never work on Tmobile US One S or did this get disabled in 1.84 update?
If you're rooted, you can remove the HTC linkify app and the functionality will return...Not sure if you can disable via app manager if unrooted

I just tried the instructions linked in this thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696536
Unfortunately, the only change is that now tapping on a phone number doesn't do anything (it used to bring up the dialer). Long-press still just selects the number for copying.
So now I can't even dial numbers by tapping them. I'm going to restore the build.prop backup and wipe the caches again and see what happens.

Did you reboot? Have you tried Settings/App Associations and clearing out the defaults? You might also have to clear the defaults in your dialer to get it to work.
I did reboot to recovery and clear the caches after deleting the apk and doing the build.prop changes.
I restored the build.prop backup and deleted the first instance of ro.da1.enable and then edited the second one from "true" to "false." This got the tap-to-dial working again, but the long-press stayed the same. I tried adding the ro.da1.method=false line, but that didnt seem to help.
I was going to check the app association settings, but that option in settings has disappeared. Is this because I deleted HTClinkifydispatcher.apk?

I think so...I didn't even do any build prop changes and I can tap to call from the browser but can't get the menu you described. Don't think I've ever seen that on any other phone I've used, so maybe it was specific to your previous models software?
I got the app associations menu back by restoring the linkify apk, undoing the build.prop changes, and clearing the two caches.
So now I'm back where I started. I have a softball game now, but I'll give this another try when I get back.
I'll get a screenshot of the menu the Evo 3D brings up when I long-press on a number.
Ok, I just went through the process again, and I don't get anything different as far as SMS and dialing goes. I tried clicking on a YouTube link, and I was given the choice between the browsers or the app, whereas before it would just open in a browser, so I know there's a change.
This time I renamed the linkify apk, deleted the first ro.da1.enable entry, and changed the second one to "false." I also restarted and wiped both caches.
Maybe the long-press menu was just a Sense option in Gingerbread. Does anybody know of a way to add this to a Sense 4.0 ICS ROM? Thanks a lot for the help so far, by the way.
I don't have any suggestions, but I remember this function/ability since you have brought it up. And I would like to get it back as well.
Going to look into it.

It will work if you double click the phone number, for me works
@syntropic - That'd be great, thanks!
@sebysebu - I tried double-tapping, and it just pulls the number up in the dialer like a single tap does. Is this what you get, or are you getting something else?

First of all I want to say that, also, I would like to have this function again.
Secondly, yes, this is what I get, I didn't tried before the single-tap, only the long press and the double-tap, my mistake, sorry. But after it pulls the number up in the dialer you can just dial then end the call quickly, then long press and you have those options. It's true that is more time wasted this way, but it can be done.
Anybody have any new ideas on this? I'm willing to use my phone as a guinea pig. I'm no expert, but I'm fairly familiar with command-line stuff.

This would seem to fit better in the thread about the Synergy rom but as a new member I'm not allowed to post in that subsection.
Does anyone know how to set up Google Now or S voice such that when i double tap the home button it brings either of those programs up? The weird thing is that in S voice settings the double tap is set to open S Voice it actually brings up Google's Voice Dialer.
I am reporting a possible bug regarding the inability to get a GPS lock after flashing Synergy 1.6. Prior to this I had a stock phone and was unrooted. I made sure to fully wipe before flashing the rom. I just wanted to throw a " me too" in there, i'm sure the devs will iron it out.
Also, is there any plan to bring back the gradual ring increase (in a zip form) that was removed in Synergy 1.5?
Thanks,

An answer to your first question is yes, they are working on a script to launch google now instead of S voice. I believe it will be implemented in 1.7
the GPS is a known issue, they still arent able to pinpoint it but they flashed ALL stock GPS files back in 1.6 so there really should be no issue..they are still trying to pinpoint this out though because some users are still having issues (I am thankfully not one of them). Download GPS test, go outside and test it.
As for the gradual ring, i'm not sure. They listen to a lot of requests but since they get A LOT, its going to be hard to implement everything.

Might want to shoot StrumerJohn a PM, he posted he might have some steps to resolve the issue in the Synergy ROM forum here is the post:

as i am new to the forums as well, i cannot post to the dev thread either.
i am using the synergy rom 1.6 on my verizon s3 as well and i was going to ask them to please include the GoogleEars.apk already installed in one of their future releases.
i wouldn't think it would be too hard to add since it's only 1 .apk file to add to the system/app location that needs to be included.

Synergy 1.7 adds in the ability to choose your double-tap app. You have to make sure to clear app defaults in S-Voice before doing this, though.

The responses to GPS problems on that board consist mainly of "re-flash". Have you tried that?

Also, just to be safe check MD5 as well. I've had some strange behavior related to a ROM that didn't download correctly but installed anyway. A fresh download and reflash fixed everything.
I switched off the stock email APP because it was showing the wrong number of mails on the icon.
I went back to Bluemail which I had used on my Moto Z without issue, took that off and now have Typeapp but same problem - no incoming email notification sound on either?
Any thoughts?

OK if you have done all the necessary settings (all permissions, notifications settings, ignoring Android optimization) then....
You have the same problem either if you leave the app open in resent apps?
This is a more general problem than just with BlueMail.
If you look back a few weeks you'll find a thread about MailDroid, that doesn't give a proper notification tone. I've had to change to Blue Mail, and it does notify properly for me. However when I first used it the app didn't always pick up a mail until I brought it out of lock. It seems to be OK now.
I think this is down to the Mate's aggressive battery-saving that is supposed to learn about app use.
And yes, I have checked the app settings and the phone settings over and over to make sure they are right.
Thanks for the replies. I tried another 3 APPS and all failed to play the notification when I sent a test mail from my PC.
I ended up back with an oldie I haven't used for years - K9 - and all is working as it should.
Not the most up to date look but if it works I'll settle for that. Four APPS with all the settings to key in and then delete it took me to midnight last night... enough was enough
Glad to hear you have found a substitute that works.
With so many different apps being affected, I'm sure there is a system problem with notifications. Hopefully this will be sorted with a future update.
Outlook works fine. Gmail is worse.
