SMS time stamp - General Questions and Answers

has anyone noticed that sms time stamps everything as received not when the message was actually sent. If i leave my phone off for example any text sent while it was off, will be time stamped when the phone is turned back on. my evo did not have this problem. i have tried other clients such a go sms and handcent but i get the same issue. any ideas?

Hey there,
You are not alone, google this and you will get a huge search result back. This has been happening since the early days of windows mobile (pre android).
It can sometimes be carrier specific, ie the error is with them or it can be simple device setting errors.
Possible solutions:
1) Go to Settings>Date & Time and uncheck "Automatic" then confirm you time zone manually.
2) Install SMS Time Fix by Matthew Precious from Market.

Text messages out of order

Anyone else experiencing their text threads being out of order? For instance, i can send a text that shows that it was sent at the right time, however if someone texts me, the time is a couple of minutes off. Thus, throwing the chronological order off.
If im reading and thinking of ur problem rite it may be the same as mine was. When i first send text sometimes it would fail and wouldnt resend till i reopen text. So it would have wrong time at least i thought it did.

No, my texts don't fail. When I send them, they show the same time as my clock. However, if someone sends me a text, it shows they sent it about a minute or two ahead of my actual time.
I'll try to give an example: 6:45PM- actual times that these text are sent.
Me (6:45PM)- aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Me (6:45PM)- ccccccccccccccccccc
Someone Else (6:46PM)- bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
See, how it places the incoming texts at 6:46, even though it is really 6:45 still, throws the order off on my reply. It makes it seems like both of my texts were sent before I even received a response.
Very frustrating......
Are you having this problem in the stock messaging app? I noticed it every once in a while, but haven't had the problem yet with Handcent.
If you're using the stock app, try downloading Handcent or ChompSMS or something, and see if it goes away
i have this same issue, its made me switch to handcent because the problem hasnt occured using that. Plus it lets me have vibrate functionality ONLY in the vibrate setting and retain only audio notification in a sound profile

Yeah, I'm using the stock messaging app. I'll try Handcent, apparently a lot of people like it. I'll update ASAP
i'm still using my fuze and i have the same problem. i wonder if it has something to do with the time on att , the other persons phone and/or other carriers servers
Handcent all the way! It corrects the out-of-order issue and is way more customizable, including assigning ringtones for each contact. Just remember to turn off the notifications on the stock messaging app, otherwise you'll receive double notifications on each message received.
Im having the same problem on my Captivate...But my N1 gets it right. Im getting replys before I even send a text...according to the time stamps.
Sorry to report that, although ive only experienced it once, i have seen the same problem with Handcent SMS

No cuz my iPhone worked just fine...
This problem happens to me if I reply back really quickly... It'll put my text above the one I replied to.

Beauty is there's ways around it (other apps) and we don't have to rely on anyone to fix it.
My wife and I both have Captivates. Her phone has the text messages out of order, while mine does not. Something we noticed is that when we do an auto sync of the date/time, her phone is consistently 4 minutes behind mine. For example, my time will be 6:06, and her phone says 6:02. I believe this is what is causing the text app to "re-arrange" the messages. The text app just looks at the time stamp of the message, and not the actual order of the send/receive process.
I am not sure how to correct this other than manually setting her phone forward by 4 minutes.

This is exactly the problem.
If I get a text at 9:01... And I reply at 9:01... It puts mine as having been sent before the one I received.
just use handcent people.
Yeah, but like I said, Ive reproduced the problem once, even with Handcent. On a side note, does anyone know how or where to get more skins for Handcent?

That does not solve the root problem... Some phones are getting the wrong time from the network when set to auto-config.

tikicult, somone else reported that their phone was off by 4 minutes. Solved it by getting a new SIM Card.

I've been having this problem as well.
I went to the AT&T store today to try and get a new SIM, as per one of the suggestions in this thread. Problem still occurred. Tried it on a fresh straight out of the box Captivate. Problem still occurred. Sales guy threw his SIM from his iPhone in a demo Captivate. Problem still occurred on both Captivates.
Later I tried adjusting the time manually up by a minute or 2. Problem still occurred after a text with a response approx. 20-30 seconds later. Still showed the text coming in at 1:23, and my response which was 30 seconds later as being sent at 1:22.
Seems like a Samsung software issue.

[Q] I received a text message from a single digit number "1"... What the heck?

[Q] I received a text message from a single digit number "1"... What the heck?
The message is still in my Samsung Galaxy S2 inbox and contains this:

Download
where "Download" is a clickable button and when I click it it changes to "Downloading", then after a few moments it changes back to "Download".
Any idea what it might be?
So you downloaded unknown software from a suspicious number onto your phone because it told you to?
Ummm... Quickly You need to pm me your bank account details and any applicable passwords plus personal identification information. If someone is going to scam you and get all your stuff it should be me, at least im honest about it, plus you have to now cause I asked you to.
Yeah, but nothing happened after, android didn't prompt me to install anything. Is it possible that it installed by itself? And how can such a message arrive to me anyway? Do you think its from an installed app??
My phone is 100% stock and not rooted. What in the heck is this? If its THAT easy to get a security hole, then that makes the market a scary place!

Whats the file name? go to where your phone stores downloads and find out. if nothing is there check running applications. Is anything running that shouldn't have been. can you provide a screenshot of the text message?
I'm shocked that you presses download, not knowing where the message came from. Were you THAT curious?
I hope nothing is going to happen to your device, but in the future, you might want to ask first before pressing anything.
Sorry I couldn't really contribute anything helpful to this thread, but I couldn't resist.

You're Fine
I think you're fine. I just recieved a similar message from 1. I think it was someone 'replying all' to a mass text because a second later that message from 1 disappeared and was replaced by an actual text. PS, I'm not an expert.

same issue sorta
see i have been getting texts like this myself it started just yesterday when a friend said he would send me a video of something (mms video) and so i never got it but instead a number listed as 1 had sent a message with no subject it was a download. i asked my friend to send again and it went through to his number instead just fine (hes using an iphone) so i just deleted the conversation with the number 1 and moved on but then my girlfriend sent a video to me and the same thing happened. im curious if its an error having to do wth the sending of video or if its something more concerning. (my girlfriend is on android) the whole thing here is taht they where sending me a video and that i got a message that i could download supposedly a video using the number 1 instead of from the person who said they where sending something(its concerning
Well that was rude. Way to be a ****
I've gotten that text message twice on two different phones and my phone auto magically started downloading? My phone is fine after every time but it's just so weird to me my recent message sent to me and then dissapeared

[Q] The connection pool for (SMS) has been unable to grant a connection to thread...

Hmm so I downloaded 8sms as I thought it might be a suitable replacement. It looked great, just like the stock messaging app. Made it default. Came back and I just got a blank white screen that says "Loading conversations.". Rebooted and it looked fine. Then opened it a second time and again lost my conversations. Switched back to Hangouts and my messages were still missing after a reboot. Opened 8sms again and my threads were there, went back to Hangouts and my threads were there.
Switch back to 8sms and I get a notification for 8305 new messages. Opened the notification and it's again "Loading conversations".
Something very strange is going on with the 3rd party functionality in KitKat. In logcat I get messages like:
"The connection pool for database '/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db' has been unable to grant a connection to thread (###) (Binder_#) with flags 0x# for 150.003 seconds" where the #s are a bit different with each entry.
Running pure stock rooted here. Any thoughts? I know that there is some sort of database transfer when switching in and out of Hangouts, but this is really disconcerting.
Given this instability, I guess I will be back to Hangouts for now until I can figure out what will work consistently.
Any thoughts on this, anyone?

Hi,
Could you please check your mms settings are correct?
http://8s.ms/mms-settings
It shouldn't be related, but I've heard from other users of weird phone behaviour when this is not configured correctly.
You might also want to try an uninstall-and-reinstall as well. There are a few reports of phones also behaving strangely which then fix themselves after a second install.
Other than that ...

That sounds like an Android problem.
That's the database which stores the sms and mms messages. You can think of it as a "server" and 8sms (and Hangouts) are just clients to the server.
Hence, the database is managed by Android, not by 8sms (nor Hangouts) which is why I think this is an Android problem .

There is no "database transfer". Both apps read from the same database, but only one (the default sms app) is allowed to write to it.
When the default sms app is changed, no data copying takes place, it's just a change of a simple string setting (to remember which is the default sms app and is allowed to write to the databse), and is instantaneous.
Hence again, this is why I think it's an Android problem.
Perhaps you have file system corruption or a problem with your Nexus 5?
Thanks, yes my MMS settings are correct. I would be surprised to see any corruption as I only just got this phone Friday. Anyways I haven't had any problems keeping it set to Hangouts.

Well, please try the reinstall I suggested above.
Then, another suggestion ... what about you force stop both apps (8sms and Hangouts) before you change the default sms app (via the Android settings)?
Perhaps in your previous switch, Hangouts was still writing data to the messages database?
(Just a random wild guess)
didnt they change how sms/mms worked in 4.4.
I think the app needs to be updated for it to be compatible no? correct me if im wrong, probably i am.

Yes, but 8sms has already been updated to work in 4.4, and there are lots of instances of it working on other Nexus 5 phones.

OK: Tried uninstalling/reinstalling 8sms. Then force closed Hangouts and 8sms each. Then changed default sms app via Android settings.
Then launched 8sms. Everything looked fine. Then opened a conversation and everything was blank. Backed out to the conversation list and got "Loading conversations" again.
I have taken a logcat filtered for anything mentioning sms. Removed identifying phone numbers from it. I have attached it here, starting with the time when 8sms is reinstalled. You can see at 01:47:05.776 the SMS app is switched to Messaging (8sms). At time 01:47:52.886 the first SQLiteConnectionPool error message appears. The messages appear every 30 seconds.
Oh! Interesting. After 10 minutes (01:57:23.016) the last error message is seen. Two seconds later we see an "onQueryComplete finished" message from 8sms. From this point on I was able to open 8sms and see my messages again.
So for a span of 10 minutes, something went on that was locking me completely out of seeing messages, and then it stopped and everything worked. I rebooted to see one more time if it was still working, and yes it does. Perhaps in order to reproduce this error you need to have a big pile of messages already present. Obviously not a lot of Nexus 5 users have this because they just got their phones, but I do because I restored a large archive of messages from my last device.
Hi,
I recognise the query "UPDATE sms SET seen=? WHERE seen=0". It's 8sms marking the messages or threads as seen. Perhaps you had a lot of messages or threads that weren't marked as seen.
Or else, maybe there was a big delay because the database was optimising itself for it's first run or something like that.
In any case, it looks like the problem is fixed now?
Yes it looks like it. However it might be worth looking into whether this problem commonly occurs when switching Kitkat to your client while a large number of messages is present. I believe I had something on the order of 17000 messages in a hundred or so threads. Yes I should probably clean up a bit

I had a similar issue. Deleted all my messages (kept the backup file though) and uninstalled and reinstalled. It worked fine.
I plan on restoring over the next few days doing it in chunks.

Pixel dumps SMSC upon restart

So, this is bit of a new issue, one I've not had before. I wish Hangouts/Messenger still had the Service Center ID in the settings in order to fix this, but, in the long/short run...
I unboxed my pixel and put my SIM in, started the phone. LTE/UMTS work perfect, locked right on, good signal/speeds, can place/receive calls, all is right in the world? I noticed after an hour I hadn't received any texts, and after feeling very unimportant, I sent a SMS to a friend, and got an immediate error. Out of curiosity, I went into the INFO settings (*#*#3646#*#*) and went into the SMSC settings. pressed refresh, which, populated an error. I manually typed mine, hit update, went back to hangouts, and voila!
The next day, I restarted the phone ( I like to do this often. I am also this user who actually turns their phone off from time to time ) and noticed upon restart, the problem resurfaced, like as if I never updated it to begin with.
Is this occurring with anyone else? I've yet to see a phone completely dump it. I'd prefer not to download another SMS application really, but, it's just inconvenient those few times I do restart it that I lose that SMSC number...
I'm having the problem as well but still haven't been able to fix it with the same procedure you did. It's driving me nuts.
UPDATE EDIT: I just realized the Wifi is interfering with it. As soon as I turned off the wifi, the txt would go out.
I'm having this same issue. I've contacted support about it, but haven't gotten a response yet (they said I would have an update yesterday).
If I manually put the SMSC in, and then Update, I can send texts briefly, but eventually I start getting an error 38 instead. A reboot and then manually entering the SMSC again allows me to send texts again.

I'm curious if setting your mobile data to always-on would be a functional workaround to help until they can get this fixed for real. Have you tried that?

Is anyone NOT getting text messages?

I'm on OB4. It has been this way since 3, and yes I've tried a factory reset.
Seems like people who send me texts never get their messages through.
I've tried just shy of everything. Anyone have any ideas?
I'm using Textra Pro btw
Yes it is happening to me too.. Many a times i wont get the otp. I thought it was carrier issue.

Same here. I was on the Official and had to go back to Android 9. Really sucks because I really liked 10
I installed carrier services from the play store, and it seems to be making it better
I wasn't getting them in the google messenger app and couldnt' download attachments (oneplus messenger or whatever it's called is disabled). I just installed this, looking forward to my next mms.

did it fix it?
I have had this issue on Android 10 only.
I've pinpointed it to when the phone is inactive for I don't know how long.. I work third shift, so sleep in the am woke up everyday for 2 weeks to texts **** down calling worked..
Only fix is reboot.
Temp fix is a scheduled shutdown and start up while I sleep and phone charges. Haven't had issues in a week now. I'm running atnt and Verizon side by side

Did you find a fix for this?
I was having issues with the stock messaging app, did not get a lot of text, or have them send either. It did not matter what network the recipient/sender was on. I switched to google messages and have not had the issue repeat itself. I am on tmo, and this happened to me months back.
