[Q] Question on KB with Infused v1.6.0 - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hi
I just recently moved over to a Samsung Infuse from many years using a BB. The XDA forums have been a great source for information on my Infuse. So far I've rooted, done 3e recovery, and used rom manager to install CWM.
Took the plunge yesterday and used rom manager to install the Infused v1.6.0 and I must say that the change in the phone is dramatic to say the least. Very happy with the result.
The only thing that I'm not liking so far is the keyboard used with this rom. Does anyone know if there's a way to get the stock KB's back?
Any help is appreciated.
TIA

You've got a lot of options for keyboards.
Its been a while since I've been on infused but see if there is another KB option in settings/language and input.
You can also download a gingerbread or ice cream sand which keyboard from the market (they look the best IMO and both free) along with a slew of other keyboards you can find on the market.
You can also look through the themes and apps section here and find the ice cream sand which keyboard apk.

Thanks for the quick reply. Duh.. I feel like a total noob for not thinking of the market for a different KB. That's the years of BB usage showing through. Never had to worry about that stuff with the BB.
Just DL'd both the Gingerbread and ICS KB's and now deciding which one to use.
Once again, thanks

No problem! The ICS keyboard is what I use at the moment, receives updates pretty regularly.

go keboard is another good one. Very customizable all the way down to how big your keys are. (sounds, themes, etc...)

[Q] How many of us came over from a G1?

A fun question. How many of us Sidekick 4G owners bought them to replace our rusty, err, trusty G1s? I get the feeling a lot of us made such a migration.
I held onto my G1 until last month, since I could find no other Android phone on the UMTS 1700 band with a keyboard so good. I just couldn't bear the thought of using a touch screen all day. When I saw the Sidekick's I knew I had to have one. And while I do miss that old workhorse, I've also enjoyed my time with the Sidekick. It's nice to finally have a current phone for once in my life!
I ended up selling that G1, cracked screen housing and all, to a friend for $50. Not only is it his first Android device, but also his first smart phone. With the addition of a new battery and a fresh ROM it should have another year or even two of life in it.
I had the G1 until I finally had an upgrade. Still have my trusty G1 just in case something magically goes wrong.
Didnt come straight from the g1 but had it when it first came out. I thought it was one of the cheapest built smartphones ive had but instead ended up being one of the toughest and survived many drops. i miss the g1's design. Im one of the few that thought it looked nice.

I'm seriously thinking about buying this phone... I miss my G1's kb, I've been putzing along with the og Droid for a couple years (I was living in the states). Now that I'm back in Canada, I need a replacement. I'm not thrilled with the lack of decent camera, but that sweet sweet keyboard looks oh so nice. I do a lot of remote server admin and so the keyboard is a big deal for me.
Are the ROMs any good? I don't need the fancy crap it looks like they've piled on top, just a standard type Android UI would be nice for me.
Failing this I'd probably get the Milestone/Droid 3, but it's been getting kinda meh reviews.
The ROMs aren't bad, we're still improving each release, but they're much better than stock. Not sure exactly what you like in a ROM, but as far as Froyo Touchwiz goes, these are pretty solid. If you do happen to get this phone and find that the ROM selection isn't what you are looking for, PM me and we'll see what we can do to get a ROM made that fits your desires.

Thanks, that's very generous of you! Really all I want is to use the phone as a palmtop computer... browser, email, SSH, etc. I don't care much about eye candy or special effects, speed and efficiency are my main concerns. Not so much concerned with it as a social media platform either as an IT consultant's accessory Oh, and Google Navigation!
To give you an idea, here's my apps:
ConnectBot
AndroidVNC
ES File Explorer
Files Anywhere
K-9 Mail
PdaNet
QR Droid
Wifi Analyzer
SipDroid
Skype
Remote Web Desktop
Square
SwiftKeyX
etc
Didn't come directly from a g1 but I bought the g1 the first day it came out, had it until cyanogen stopped supporting it, and then tried out several different phones and none of them satisfied me. I could never get used to an all touchscreen device and most keyboards were very lacking. The sidekick has the best keyboard I have ever used, I like it better than the g1's. I still keep my g1 and use it for a bluetooth keyboard on my ipad/ps3 since blueputdroid doesn't support samsung's bluetooth drivers for some reason.
Sounds just like me! I work in IT as well and use most of those apps as well, and as far as i've found, there's no issues with them, and the keyboard is an IT person's best friend.
I'm getting the Sidekick in a couple days. Coming from the Mytouch 1.2 I have a couple roms I developed in the G1 section. I was wondering if and why there is no Gingerbread for Sidekick? Just curious. Also does anyone know if CM will support it? Thanks. I'm new to the Sidekick.
Sent from my Mytouch 1.2 using XDA Premium App!
There's no gingerbread for it because there's no gingerbread source. CM probably won't officially support it, as CM doesn't officially support anything Samsung other than the Galaxy S. When we get the GB source, someone (probably me) will at least try porting an unofficial CM7, but until we get the source, there's no efficient way to port it.

So Samsung wont release the source. I hope it gets released soon. If so I'd like to work with you to get a CM ROM going for it. I have two CM7 Roms in the G1 Development forums.

Also can anyone brush me up on ODIN, and Voodoo?
Sent from my Mytouch 1.2 using XDA Premium App!
Odin flashes firmware like fastboot does for HTC phones (kind of).
Odin is used to restore to stock from any state other than a hard brick. It just restores system images to the partitions.
Voodoo is the set of tweaks commonly used to implement the Lagfix, aka EXT4 partitions. Voodoo ClockworkMod recovery is Red, and is implemented in the Bali kernel.
I would be open to working with you on it, as I am for most people on most projects, let me know if you ever wanna work on anything together.

[Q] Newbie with lots of experience wants ROM

I had a G2. When I rooted, I had step by step instructions to use ADB from my Windows 7 64 machine. I used the Clockworkmod recovery and got the latest (february this year) stable Cyanogen. Eventually I got the nightly addiction.
Now I have a MT4GS and rooted it first thing so I could restore my Titanium backups. The recovery is revolutionary and it seems that everyone else is using something else.
CM7 was so fully complete that I forgot how bad the rest of the world was. I had the latest Swype beta and using the current one with the phone is OK but is missing some of my favorite features.
So, to my question: Is there anything that is close to full featured as CM7? One thing I truly love about my current installation is the camera app.
When I have looked into using other ROM's, I keep seeing other recovery roms listed than the one I have.
Bottom line is what is out there? What are the differences between the recoveries? What about the camera app? I could care less if sense is gone. I don't use it and I have a bunch of apps that do what I want.
Sorry for rambling but I like to explore and tweak, I have some experience with computers , I understand most of it but I am not a programmer.
Can I get some step by step help? I would aprpeciate it very much.
Thanks.
How about CM7 there is an alpha release for our phone

And again, untill ICS, the only way to have the current camera is with a sense rom.
It will never be included in a CM7 rom, or work on a CM7 rom.
There are third party camera apps that come close, but nothing as good as the included camera.

And, for this reason, I have gone straight back to the factory rom.
I have paid for and got for free (amazon app of the day) half a dozen camera apps. None, in my opinion, come close to the original.
As of a couple of weeks ago, there was no clockworkmod recovery. After reading a reply to my original message, I found that there is. I used rom manager (paid version) to download and install the CM7 alpha and the google apps. It brought back fond memories of my G2. I was happy. Then I tried the camera. Then I tried the several camera apps I got for the G2 and nothing can take a great picture quickly and then go to the next.
So, my original question was answered. I now know where to find the CW recovery and I know where to find some roms on rom manager.
What is available for this phone that has the great customization of CM7 AND the camera app?
Thanks again for all the responses.

Go to my sig and look under roms. All of our roms our there. With how to install them in recovery mode which is volume up+ power.
I suggest if you want a cm7 feel with sense try undeadk9's senseless, best thing to do is try them out nandroid em, that way you have all of our roms. We have about 5 and if you do that you can switch roms at ease.

[Q] Drop-down menu widgets?

Hey guys. I switched from my slow, glitchy, and just aging captivate to the nexus S a few days ago, and I love it.
There are a couple things I miss though - the big one being the quick setting widgets in the drop down menu. I don't care if it's an app/widget from the market, or something I have to flash in to the rom. I just want those settings up there.
Is there a way to add those without flashing another rom? I like stock gingerbread (and I'll be switching to ICS when it comes out OTA for 9020A) and I don't want to flash a custom rom like CM or something. I'm rooted, but other than that I'm stock 2.3.6.
Other things I miss are a predictive dialer, and swype. If you can help me out there too I'd be greatly appreciative!
Edit: Oh, and the music controls shown in the menu would be nice too! (but only if it will work for google music)
When I moved to the NS from a Vibrant I felt the same way. There is no way to do it without some modding and I don't remember ever seeing a simple flashable zip to add it to GB. I ended up having a love hate relationship with CM7 but have moved to ICS and there is a mod to add it to some ICS roms in the dev section. I have yet to bother adding it.
Anyway, yes it can be done but not without some flashing or modding but if you aren't wanting to do that you are out of luck.
You can get similar functionality to pics with widget locker or extended controls, you get an icon or space in the status bar though. GB doesn't support it.
Music widget as above is available in stock ics too.

I really like stock, but I can flash if I *have* to... I've had a love hate relationship with CM myself, I felt like it took a little too much effort to keep up and running.. With the Google apps packs, and the nighties and constant backing up and flashing, you know. Is CM up to ICS for the Nexus S 9020a yet?
I also recently came from the captivate. I was also determined to stay stock and wait for the ics ota but....
The development for the ns is light years ahead of what you and I were used to and i am impressed after flashing a pretty much stock ics rom with a custom kernel. No toggles in the drop down but it sure is nice having everything working like it should. Fast and smooth! Peter Alphonso's ics

Dad-Worthy ROM

Hi all--
I just bought this phone for my Dad as an upgrade from the inspire 4g.
He's been running CM7 on that phone (and on his n1 before that). However, i see that CM7 is crap right now on the Skyrocket (I'm on the t989 on tmobile...but don't use it there because of the lack of wifi calling...a must with tmo's terrible network).
Anyhow, does anyone have a ROM recommendation for me/him?
I'll replace the stock launcher with Go Launcher anyways, so I'm really looking for something that is stable, has great battery life, and that he won't need to update regularly (which he won't---I'll just update it when I am in town every month or two).
Thoughts?
Thanks!

TPC by twopumpchump has been running incredibly well for me. Battery life has been amazing, especially when installing his OC'd script through CWM. It is not themed like the others, but performance and reliably is on par.

Try pirate ghosts rom in the dev section. Super stable for me. But all of our rom seem to be perfect. Ive tried em all and have not had a prob. And i wouldn't say cm7 is crap either. Our heros put time into that rom/kernal. It may not be for everyone, but its still a reliable rom for our phone.

CocaColaClassic is very nice as well is Sky Ice Cream Sandwich Multiple Flavors. The developer seanzscreams has worked fast and furiously to make these ROMs mature.
The speed and battery life on CocaCola is amazing but if you have an issue with a black and red theme then check out ICS.
That's my 2 cents.

+1 for Space Pirate. Running it now and couldn't be happier. You won't have to worry about any updates because PirateGhost has since left the Skyrocket. But don't worry, it doesn't need any. Based mostly on stock, just tweaked and optimized. So no crazy kinks or bugs that would need to be worked out through updates. Battery life has been amazing - averaging ~3% per hour with moderate use throughout the work day. And undoubtedly snappier than stock.

I've been using using the alien ROM and love it. very simple and easy. Takes out most bloatware but isn't super flashy and retains to stockish feel.

[Q] Help restoring new Skyrocket

I lost my Captivate (Galaxy S), so to make the most of that unfortunate situation I have acquired a Skyrocket to replace it.
The Captivate was rooted and running a custom ROM (Pinnacle). Luckily I have a recent Titanium Backup folder that I copied onto my laptop from that phone before losing it.
How much can/should I restore from that backup to my new Skyrocket? What about all my apps, should I restore them from that backup or does Google remember what I had previously downloaded from the market and allow me to easily re-download them all somehow? If so, is that a better solution?
I haven't rooted the Skyrocket yet. In fact I haven't researched the available ROMS or anything else yet since this was an unplanned upgrade on short notice. Anyone care to point me to my best bets to get back up and running quickly? Are any of the ICS ROMs in the developer section genuine ICS or just lookalikes? And are they stable and ready for prime time yet?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Not a good idea to restore files from a different device. You could bork your phone that way. The market remembers apps you purchased, but not others.
And no true ICS roms, but there are a few good ICS-themed roms.
My previous phone was a Captivate--I really miss it (sold it when I needed some money). The sound (with Voodoo Control of course) was infinitely better then the Skyrocket. I used it as a wifi media player before I sold it.
Anywho, welcome to the Skyrocket! It's a great phone and development has been picking up after a slow start.

OK I decided to give the QwikWiz ROM a try since it seems to have the fewest bug complaints in its thread. I do miss my Captivate but the Skyrocket is much faster. I hope it won't be long until we get ICS for it.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback everyone.

I restored all my user apps from my Captivate and my SR has been fine since day 1. Only 1 app didn't really restore right so I had to manually download it, then just restore the data after. Note: only restored my USER apps.
DO. NOT. I repeat in huge bold, DO. NOT. restore ANY system files. Period. You'll either bork your device or run into FC city. Both of which are no fun at all...
I restored everything from the market, pretty cool to be able to do everything from Google Dashboard using my PC and watch the apps install themselves on my phone.
The QwickWiz ROM is running great and the overall speed is nice. I can see I'm going to need to grab an extra battery and charger from ebay though.

Oh, I agree 100%. Captivate screen doesn't hold a candle to the screen on the Skyrocket. Love this thing.
But the sound quality (at least when hooked up to a stereo) was so much better on the Captivate (w/Voodoo). I only wish I kept it so I could listen to music on it.
