Compatible Anti-Theft Apps - Kindle Fire Themes and Apps

I've successfully rooted and installed the Android Market on my Kindle Fire, and in doing so came across some of the anti-theft apps like Prey. However, these apps seem to rely on SMS and GPS as a large part of their functionality. Is there any security app that would work for the Kindle; something that gives coarse location through WiFi and things such as that?
This would help me greatly, as it's the only device I have to worry about actually losing at present.
The closest I can seem to get is Cerberus. It has remote wiping, locking, alarms, and etc, but does not show coarse location. After attempting to send the locate device command, it does not appear on the map.

Well from my understanding no app can add functions that the kindle just can not have. Like to be located loo sorry but amazon made it this way and nothing you do will change that maybe custom Roms but even then how you will locate a lost kindle is beyond me. Since it has no gps or cell signal. And if you password portect it. It cant connect to new wifi

The GPS only works when connected through your phone, I believe.

And how exactly are you going to "put gps on it" ? If you're not going to attach tons of gadgets to your microUSB port or another cell phone with a duck tape behind your KF, let me know

(bumping this thread)
My wife works for a doctor's office doing research, and they're getting a patient form-filling app that runs on Android. The Kindle Fires or another cheap tablet looks like the best way to go, but they are concerned about these things growing legs.
Without SMS and GPS, tracking using the typical apps such as Prey just won't work. I've got some ideas, I'm looking for others:
Mainly: Pair with a bluetooth device that sits in the office. I think I should be able to use Tasker or on{x} to detect when the bluetooth disconnects, and (a) play an alarm on the device, (b) alert the office
The alert the office part could possibly be done through (1) pairing with a laptop, (2) Google Voice? (3) Some web or email thingy, if the device is either still in WiFi range or connects to a public WiFi.
Sound reasonable?

XM RADIO

Since Captivate has GPS I was wondering if an app or hack for Xm Radio might exist or work with the phones??? Has anyone tried it???
You need to root and allow sideloading or push .apk using adb.
I rooted and changed settings to allow sideload. Then used email from Sirius to get application.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Once you get the app from Xm Radio do you have to register your phone as a XM device and pay or will you be able to get the programming free?
You need to add premium online service. If you have an account, it's like $2.40/month.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Ok, thanks.
I wonder just how well it works considering the GPS issues we seem to have for now.
works great for me, I don't know why they don't put the app in the market though. Rooted my phone the first day I had it specifically for this reason. Dosen't seem to slow down the phone at all while you're listening, either. The GPS issus don't have anything to do with the operation of the app - it's basically just a client for XM/Sirius online so it uses your data connection, no satellites involved. You will need the $3/month Premium Online Listening package to listen from your phone, like someone mentioned.
Something I noticed recently is that although it will switch between 3g and WiFi data automatically, if I'm going in and out of WiFi a lot (like when I mow the lawn) it will begin to drop out - just turn the WiFi off and you're good to go. Keep an eye on your data usage if you don't have an unlimited plan, though.
I do have a small gripe - when I listen to XM online on my computer, it's only about 5 seconds behind my home (satellite) unit. On the phone, it's literally about a minute, even on WiFi. The Blackberry app has the same issue. Kind of annoying, but it's not the end of the world.
Here's the link to the download page:
I can't post outside links. Google "XM android" and it should be the first search result.
Thanks. I have Xm Radio in my car. I thought it might be nice on the phone too.
I'm not sure about the $36 a year since there is so much free listening out there that's simular. I find myself only listening to 2 channels when I'm in the car.....lol.

I don't have the app but I can say 99.9% that it doesn't use GPS for anything. It uses 3G data to stream the stations to you.
Hmm... allow me to help here:
The GPS receiver in the phone has NOTHING to do with receiving XM Radio. Yes, the XM Radio you have in your car does receive satellite signals, however it is unrelated to the receiver in your phone. Your phone uses the Cell Network to stream XM Radio, if such an app exists, and it would certainly cost money.
Clearer?
When we get flash support with Froyo, we should be able to stream through their website.

While I can confirm you can login to the player this way, I was unable to get the stream. Probably doesn't like the browser, dunno.

[Q] Initiate Cell Phone's hotspot feature from a tablet.

Hey guys,
I am not sure if this has been attempted before or if it even remotely possible.
The end result however would be neat.
In essence, I want to be able to unlock my tablet, finger a widget and have it tell my phone wirelessly to turn on the hotspot feature so that I magically have internet on my tablet. Needless to say, both are Android and rooted.
My initial idea was to use tasker and create a profile using "bluetooth connection" so that on my tablet I would have a widget (Extended Controls) and could talk to my phone using that, so that if I want the hotspot to be activated on the phone I simply turn on the BT on the tablet. However, I can pair the two devices but they never actually connect up. Therefore that plan won't work, and I am wondering if any of you have any ideas...
I know I can setup BT tethering, and that it would be better for battery life, but it is also a lot slower than Wifi, and at that point would wonder what the benefit of 4G would be!
Anyway, if you have an idea, feel free to let everybody know!
I've actually developed an app to do that; it's called AutoTether and is available on the market. If you care to give it a try, feel free to PM me with any problems you encounter while using it.
Shame on me...
...for not finding this little gem!
I am glad you went ahead and did this. Sadly, it doesn't seem to work for me.
When looking for other devices, it does find my phone, but when trying to initiate the tethering form the tablet, I get the messages "Sending Command..." followed by "Cannot find target device".
I am assuming you are using bluetooth as a communication channel between the two devices, and I am wondering if it could be the kernel on my phone missing some module (LeanKernel Normal from imoseyon). I will poke more into this shortly once I get adb shell hooked up.
Let me know in the mean time if you think there is something else I am missing.
Assuming I get it working, it will have been one of the best purchased made so far
Mea Culpa
Okay, not my day.
Really sorry. I think the app works fine and the problem was with my phone.
Reboot fixed it. Before reboot wifi was reporting "error" status for some reason or other...
Anyway, good job, well done and thanks again!
Enjoy it, and if you like it please don't hesitate to review it or send me any feedback or feature requests you have. You should really check out the screen monitor mode, too: it completely automates everything by only turning the hotspot on when the screen is on! I always find myself forgetting to turn off the hotspot manually, so this has saved my phone's battery more than once.
This is a must have app!!!!!!!
I have never posted to any of the forums. I have browsed every page of of every section of the the Asus Transformer section and of the 300 apps I have installed on my TF this one just moved to my all time favorite. My TF and my Evo now work seamlessly together. I love the simple 1x1 widget it does not draw attention to its purpose and adds an illusion of 3g built in connectivity. Hats off to you.
Just a quick thing, would it be possible to re-enable wifi when the hotspot is deactivated?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Doesn't seem to be working for me. I run a Droid 2, stock rooted, and TF 3.1.
I normally tether via bluetooth, but the app doesn't seem to offer bluetooth auto-tethering.
I'll keep the app purchased, as I'm getting a new phone soon and I'd like to be able to use this app in the future.
Thanks for the feedback folks! I'm going to look into the problem with your Droid 2 (please don't hesitate to PM me any details you can, since that'll help me get it working).
About automatically reenabling wifi: that's high on my list of priorities to add. It was originally part of the program, but I encountered a lot of bugs and had to take it out. It's good to know that you'd like the feature, and you can count on seeing it in the near future.
Wow
Auto Tether works great. Thanks. I have Samsung Vibrant and Transformer. I gave it 5 stars and a nice review.
Fantastic, Installing and testing now!
EDIT: Works perfectly
Greatest thing for Tablets so far!
This must go on the Required applications list!!
I'm interested in this, but my phone is an HTC Hero CDMA running aospCMod 2.3.4 and under Wireless & Networks it only lists Tethering, not hotspot. Under Tethering it only mentions USB tethering, no Wifi. Which leads me to my question...
Is it possible for this to work with the Wireless Tether app instead? I expect it won't, but it can't hurt to ask. Thanks!
Awesome, HTC Supersonic running CM7 and TF104 running Prime 1.4, works great.
Awesome App!!!
For anyone still following this thread, I've just released a small update for AutoTether that allows wifi to automatically re-enable itself when tethering is turned off (if it was previously enabled).
Everything should be quite seamless. Thank you for you ongoing feedback!
Will this work on sense phones? I have a mytouch 4g, and this is an awesome idea, but i could imagine sense getting in the way...
I can't guarantee it will work on a phone if the manufacturer has modified the hotspot function. If you have a Sense-enabled phone and you'd like to try the app out, you can PM me your name and I'll make sure you get a refund if things don't work (outside of the normal refund window).
I think the new 15 minute refund window is horribly unfair, especially for an app as complex as this one.
Tasker will easily do this.
Couple suggestions, not sure if possible...
Ability to enable/disable wifi on the client when enabling/disabling tether on the server
Ability to choose the connection on the server (mobile data/3g vs. 4g)

Care to elaborate?
I've started getting FCs from autotether randomly, what can I give you for logs to help diagnose the issue?
Also, can screen monitor be disabled when using the widget to enable Tethering? Maybe make it a configurable item in the settings?

[Q] Is it secure to use android on a public wifi? How do I protect against droidsheep, firesheep, ssl stript...?
I currently use android 2.3.4 and I would love to connect in cafeterias or places alike wich use none. wep. wpa, wpa2 or radius encryption. So that I could use skype or gtalk videocall or even youtube. But I am fearful, am I being paranoid or is it normal to be so cautious? What are the risks? Could somehow my gmail account be hijacked by just connecting to one of this networks with some malicious people around?
Should I use ssh tunneling or vpn?
Wich free vpn or ssh tunneling services would you suggest?
I also found this app, but it seems that it just creates many fake connections wifi and wifi noise so you can camouflage

I've used my phone on several WiFi hotspots ever since my iPhone 3g and have never had a problem getting hacked. It's more about what kind of sites you visit and that is a problem even on a locked secure connection. If someone is good enough it doesn't matter how you protect yourself. It's not worth worrying about though as long as you know how to spot a problem when it arises. I'm sure avg from the market is good enough if you insist on using something. I have never used any of these kind of programs on my phone though.

Well, actually it does not create any connections, no noise and you cannot camouflage with it. It passively monitors your phone for unusual network events and alarms you in case of an active attack against your phone.

If you don't protect yourself someone doesn't need to be good. It's like locking the front door and leave the window open.

To be honest. Mobile security apps are over rated. With a little common sense you will be fine.

I have never had my identity stolen or noticed anything weird going on with my phone that would be a sign of hacking. Nor have I had any online accounts hacked. If someone is worried then they should protect themselves. I'm just saying that I am not worried about it and using a program to protect yourself is not 100% effective. I would be more worried about all the paperwork with your personal information sitting in filing cabinets at places where people have access to them.

The issue with connecting to these public networks, or even encrypted ones, is that people usually have bad surfing practices. Your connection to the router might be encrypted, but what if someone has access to the data that the router accepts or sends to the internet.
What you need to do is always use secure protocols to access the services you need like gmail or hotmail.
Besides that, it's always good to have a radar on in case somebody has zombied your device for some delayed exploits.
It is easy to set up a fake router with your computer's WiFi or with another router, name it what you want (ssid) and the mac you want. You can then disconnect a device and make it connect to you.
Evil twin router, rogue WiFi, airpwn, man in the middle, karma, metasploit...

[Q] Question about NFC phone to PC

So have a tmo note 3 and a dell xps 12. Both have nfc and can detect when they get close to each other.... this is where my knowledge ends. I have googled with no luck so would appreciate more than "just search". Giving me keywords to search for is a good option too.
So what I want to happen is phone and pc unlocks when I bring them together. And possibly connect airdroid or something similar between them so I can use my phones features on my pc without plugging in anything. If anyone wants to just point me in the direction of some cool programs that use nfc for windows that would be great also.

The NFC available bandwidth is pretty limited I believe. The features that let you direct-transfer files between Android devices by touching them uses NFC to set up Wifi Direct connections, so all the *cool* apps like Airdroid just use wifi.

Yep yep I meant more like them telling each other "Hey! He is using both of us... thats silly.... why don't I load up airdroid so he can quit wasting battery life on both of us?" Without me having to do anything except initially set them up to do that.... just cant figure out anything when it comes to the nfc between the two.

Well Airdroid itself can be configured to start automatically when a specified wifi SSID is present.
If you really want to use NFC for unlocking, then you need to read these instructions.

[Q] Locate My Phone, with no gps

Hello guys, I saw some apps for android like, comodo anti theft, avast anti theft, eset anti theft, and so on, for locating the phone.
Which one do you recommend or think that is the best?
I have gived a try to avast and comodo, but I saw that if the phone is in the house I can not locate it from the laptop browser / avast web-interface,
as it needs to enable the GPS reciver and gps can not be started automatically or even if it is started it will not "see" the gps sattelites because of the roof. And with comodo I saw no web-interface, only sms texting, and I have only one phone, no secondary phone handy for finding it easy.
I wish to be able do do two simple things by controlling it over internet using a laptop (wify or carrier data 3G/EDGE/GPRS)
1) If I forgot where is my phone in house and I have no other phone, to be able to make the phone to sound an alarm for finding it more easy, it happens often to forget where my phone is in the house
2) Locate the approximate location of the phone by using GSM towers, and NOT the GPS (in case that will be stolen, or I forget where I left the phone, in car / at work / at house etc.)
Hello, well to help you out I use Kaspersky Mobile Security, it has alot of features, you can lock the phone via sms messages, take mug shots, wipe the phone and locate it too, you can look for it in the play store, its a paid app but I think its worth it, I would look into it if I were you and consider it as a viable option. Hope this helps.
You can locate your Android Device with Googles Device Manager and has a features to lock the phone and ring.. Also I believe there is APPs to track your device with GSM towers.

I have enabled in settings > Location services > Access my location and google location service, now I can find my location without using gps, avast anti theft works pretty well, I also found an interesting app on google play named Secret Control but it has some ads.
