Since Captivate has GPS I was wondering if an app or hack for Xm Radio might exist or work with the phones??? Has anyone tried it???
You need to root and allow sideloading or push .apk using adb.
I rooted and changed settings to allow sideload. Then used email from Sirius to get application.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Once you get the app from Xm Radio do you have to register your phone as a XM device and pay or will you be able to get the programming free?
You need to add premium online service. If you have an account, it's like $2.40/month.

Ok, thanks.
I wonder just how well it works considering the GPS issues we seem to have for now.
works great for me, I don't know why they don't put the app in the market though. Rooted my phone the first day I had it specifically for this reason. Dosen't seem to slow down the phone at all while you're listening, either. The GPS issus don't have anything to do with the operation of the app - it's basically just a client for XM/Sirius online so it uses your data connection, no satellites involved. You will need the $3/month Premium Online Listening package to listen from your phone, like someone mentioned.
Something I noticed recently is that although it will switch between 3g and WiFi data automatically, if I'm going in and out of WiFi a lot (like when I mow the lawn) it will begin to drop out - just turn the WiFi off and you're good to go. Keep an eye on your data usage if you don't have an unlimited plan, though.
I do have a small gripe - when I listen to XM online on my computer, it's only about 5 seconds behind my home (satellite) unit. On the phone, it's literally about a minute, even on WiFi. The Blackberry app has the same issue. Kind of annoying, but it's not the end of the world.
Here's the link to the download page:
I can't post outside links. Google "XM android" and it should be the first search result.
Thanks. I have Xm Radio in my car. I thought it might be nice on the phone too.
I'm not sure about the $36 a year since there is so much free listening out there that's simular. I find myself only listening to 2 channels when I'm in the car.....lol.

I don't have the app but I can say 99.9% that it doesn't use GPS for anything. It uses 3G data to stream the stations to you.
Hmm... allow me to help here:
The GPS receiver in the phone has NOTHING to do with receiving XM Radio. Yes, the XM Radio you have in your car does receive satellite signals, however it is unrelated to the receiver in your phone. Your phone uses the Cell Network to stream XM Radio, if such an app exists, and it would certainly cost money.
Clearer?
When we get flash support with Froyo, we should be able to stream through their website.

While I can confirm you can login to the player this way, I was unable to get the stream. Probably doesn't like the browser, dunno.

Pandora doesn't open properly on my Xoom. I get a window that says:
Sorry!
The application Pandora (process com.pandora.android) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
Force close........................Report
I have performed both a soft reset and a factory reset and it didn't resolve the issue.
Any ideas?
Just to let you know, I have not had any problems using Pandora, I would check if you have some other media player conflict or possibly a streaming app conflict, another thing to check would be if it is just that your particular WIFI is blocking it for some reason. Try uninstalling media players, streaming applications, and browsers, reset and reinstall Pandora (after you have done the above), if that doesn't work try a different WIFI and see if it is a network issue, a lot of companies are blocking Pandora and any other streaming content. Check to see if it works on the browser and therefore just an app issue.
Edit: After looking more closely at your specific issue I expect that it is an app conflict, this is not definitive, it could still be a streaming conflict, but I would say you have some app that is conflicting with something Pandora is trying to do at startup. This could be a program that has a bad memory clearing function and is not letting go of some process.
Hope this helps.

I am not sure what the issue is but I don't suspect it is my server issue. I have a Droid X and have no problem with Pandora when connected to my same Wi-Fi router.
Very few people currently have the Wi-Fi only Xoom. Those with the 3G Xoom don't seem to have the problem even with data turned off.
I'm having the same issue on my new WiFi only Xoom.
I've tried to uninstall, restart and reinstall. But the problem remains.

This may be a glitch with the Wi-Fi only Xoom. The 3G version folks aren't having the problem with Pandora. I have also performed a factory reset and it didn't help.
I think other people with Wi-Fi only Xooms are reporting this issue.
I also can't get Gasbuddy to work on my Wi-Fi Xoom. The 3G folks say they can get Gasbuddy to work.
Same here with my wifes new wi-fi only, it does work on my 3G, also having issues with slacker, after I login it goes to a black screen

Has anyone contacted Pandora? Weird that the Verizon Xoom does not have a problem even if you didn't get a Verizon data plan.

Worked great thanks!
So, I would like to know what changed between the 3G and Wi-Fi Xoom.
It may be that Pandora is intentionally breaking the software on the Android platform as they are loosing any assurance of limitation of consumption. i.e. 3G was SOME what of a limiter previously.
They have already 40 limit on the desktop version that does not apply to most if not all Android devices.

I think you may have misplaced your tinfoil hat.
It is probably just getting an unexpected value back from a function since no 3g radio is present and it wasn't designed for that. Who knows though, since nobody has posted a log of the error.

There are several apps that won't work yet. Contact the maker and ask them to update with the latest SDK version.

I've successfully rooted and installed the Android Market on my Kindle Fire, and in doing so came across some of the anti-theft apps like Prey. However, these apps seem to rely on SMS and GPS as a large part of their functionality. Is there any security app that would work for the Kindle; something that gives coarse location through WiFi and things such as that?
This would help me greatly, as it's the only device I have to worry about actually losing at present.
The closest I can seem to get is Cerberus. It has remote wiping, locking, alarms, and etc, but does not show coarse location. After attempting to send the locate device command, it does not appear on the map.
Well from my understanding no app can add functions that the kindle just can not have. Like to be located loo sorry but amazon made it this way and nothing you do will change that maybe custom Roms but even then how you will locate a lost kindle is beyond me. Since it has no gps or cell signal. And if you password portect it. It cant connect to new wifi

(bumping this thread)
My wife works for a doctor's office doing research, and they're getting a patient form-filling app that runs on Android. The Kindle Fires or another cheap tablet looks like the best way to go, but they are concerned about these things growing legs.
Without SMS and GPS, tracking using the typical apps such as Prey just won't work. I've got some ideas, I'm looking for others:
Mainly: Pair with a bluetooth device that sits in the office. I think I should be able to use Tasker or on{x} to detect when the bluetooth disconnects, and (a) play an alarm on the device, (b) alert the office
The alert the office part could possibly be done through (1) pairing with a laptop, (2) Google Voice? (3) Some web or email thingy, if the device is either still in WiFi range or connects to a public WiFi.
Sound reasonable?
Hello,
I am thinking of buying the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 WIFI P3110 but I have a question.
One of the things I really like to have on it is GPS. When I google for this model I get contradicting information. One website says it has build-in GPS while another website says it doesn't. Then somewhere else I read it uses A-GPS. I'm really confused now.
What I want is this: to be able to navigate without the use of a data connection. Is this possible???
Hope you guys (and girls) can help me out
My P3113 has GPS and it works fine. I'm guessing the P3110 has GPS as well, as I think the only difference is a lack of the IR Blaster.
yep
I've been unable to use navigation using just GPS.

When you speak of GPS and a data connection, you're talking about two different things. The GPS is basically a radio receiver that interprets the signals from orbiting satellites to determine your position. This capability is already present with the Tab. The practical application of this GPS data requires some kind of map interface to display the location information (from the GPS receiver). The "data" connection is needed to download the actual maps that display on your device as you move. Google maps does this. There are however programs that allow you to download all the needed maps at one time in advance and then store them on your device. Then when using the GPS, the data connection isn't needed because the maps are already on board. Two examples of this are CoPilot GPS and Back Country Navigator. I've used both and they work great. Hope this helps.
Google maps has a feature to save maps for offline use. I haven't actually tested it without a data connection though

Yeah the GPS works great on mine. Very quick lock on and very accurate. Unfortunately I haven't tried it without a data connection, so I don't know how it works while you are out.

Same as me, on my GT-P3110 with a navigation map out of data:good:
OK, reviving this thread a lil bit. I recently cracked the screen of my Nexus 7. In the market for getting another tablet. The primary use of the N7 has been as a media center/navigation for my car. I listen to pandora and use Google Maps being tethered to my smartphone. The GPS is important as I have to make a few 18 hour trips halfway across the country and back to pic up my son for my time with him...and then repeat the trip to take him back. I have found a couple used galaxy tab 2's locally on craigslist. Having not really looked into the GTab 2, would this be a suitable replacement for my N7 or do you think I should just get another N7? Open to suggestions.

I don't think routing or searching for businesses etc works in offline mode. All you can do is view the map. Google doesn't believe you have the right to use navigation offline. You must always be connected.
Hello, firstly I would like to say that I'm a noob,
I was wondering if there was anyway to get free gps on my android without having a SIM card or any wifi. I already tried the google maps thing while your offline, I heard some people did something to their phones and were able to use tomtom without using a data plan or any other connection for that matter. I'm looking for something like that using my phone as an actual gps without any charges, I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction, thank you.

try to navigation app "sygic" u can download maps and use it totally offline, turn by turn and everything,. takes up about 400mb for city map though :good:
Try Navigon or MapsWithMe

MapsWithMe or NavFree. One uses Google's maps, the other Openstreetmaps.
For both you need WiFi to download the maps, but you don't need data it afterwards.
So here's the strange thing I've noticed recently while connected to my GS3 via hotspot, youtube videos don't play on devices connected to the specific hotspot. I'm using CleanRom 7, and I've only noticed this recently. It's like the video will not load, but the site itself works entirely. I don't have this issue with various Wi-Fi networks, it is specific to my phone and devices connected to my phone.
YouTube App does work on my phone regardless if hotspot is on.
YouTube does work on multiple networks on multiple devices, but via hotspot through my GS3.
No app blocking or redirecting incoming and outgoing traffic. (unless that's happening and I'm unaware of any changes)
I'm just curious if anyone is having this issue as well? Or with any other video format online. I've checked whether or not it's just the flash player or HTML5 format was the issue, but again the videos play regardless on networks outside of my hotspot. I've also been to sites where flash video works flawlessly via my hotspot. So, it's really just YouTube.

I also experienced the same thing. Been looking around and they are blocking youtube. Apparently they are blocking youtube, netflix and various other streaming sites on any device connected to the hotspot. I have a grandfathered unlimited account with verizon so its people like me they are mainly aiming this at. You can try a VPN from what im told by a buddy at verizon, but its hard to find a good VPN off the playstore that doesn't have nefarious programming. I'm sure you could find something here on XDA about VPNs. Sorry im not anymore help but im a newb. Lol
Also it might have something to do with when they throttle down the data speed. Might be automatic until your data plan renews each month.?

I finally found a vpn I like a lot. Private internet access, unlimited bandwith for 40 something a year. Speeds are good and it has a play store app that works pretty good now (the old app was just a shortcut to the default android vpn settings). I think its 10$ or something for month to month payment so if you try it out and like it don't forget to buy the year and save a good chunk of change.
Thanks I think its time for this. ive always heard of VPN's but never really understood the need. If this works "thanks Verizon for opening my eyes" lol

I have problems connecting on windows 8 but it will connect. 7 and xp connect without any problems. I think it is a setting in the firewall. If you have a router that supports VPN you can set it up there and tunel all your traffic.
