I have a rooted Sidekick 4G and have downloaded the Smooth Maximus ROM onto it, as well as ROM Manager. When I looked at the how-to replace the stock recovery binary for CWM it doesn't allow me to overwrite the recovery, so I can't get CWM to boot. Any suggestions? I seem to be out of options. Thanks to anyone who can help!
ROM manager should have the option to flash CWM, need to do it twice then request that it boot you into recovery

You are on stock recovery if you get the !
You probably mistakenly flash the stock recovery before you flash the repacked ROM.
Easiest thing to do now is install CWM recovery again.
Download a stock firmware from Asus website and flash it with CWM recovery.
That will put you at stock firmware, unrooted and stock recovery.

What CWM version are you using? If its the lastest from Roach, it only flashes from the internal memory, not from sd card.

Hello to all respected members
i have a problem... i read all threads and tutorials on rooting nexus s GT19023 but still no success ...
i bought this phone yesterday so I'm new to this... hope someone kind will explain the details to me ...
bootloader status says : unlocked
but still no root on 4.04
clockmod recovery is installed... so another question
can i install custom rom using clockmod recovery without root access? if possible, then after installing custom ICS rom it will then be rooted>?
thanks in advance for all those who took time in helping me root ICS 4.04 stock rom... i really need root access on this rom... i hope i can install custom rom with cm recovery then have root with custom rom
since im new to this, please suggest the best rom and kernel to use i'm open to suggestions
thanks
if you want your phone rooted, flash this in CWM:
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
then, in app drawer should has Superuser icon.
In other way, if you flash custom rom, it's already rooted, so you don't have to flash that file above again...
thanks savantist ... i flashed custom rom and its working awesome... rooted + kernel... thanks for the reply thread is solved
I'm about to root my nexus s for the first time. I'm running Android 4.04. Quick nooby question..will I lose the contacts n data on my phone memory if I root by flashing that superuser file with CWM recovery..If yes then is there a way to create a NAND backup prior to rooting my device.
Thanks a lot for putting up with my nooby question. Pls help!!!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA

Flash CWM from fastboot
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
Place the ClockworkMod Recovery Image in the same folder as fastboot (the /tools folder with the Android SDK folder). Power the Nexus S down, and hold Volume Up & the Power button until booted into the bootloader. Connect the Nexus S to the computer via USB. On the computer, open terminal and run:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Nexus S.
After that boot into recovery using volume up + power button, then selecting recovery. Now in CWM flash
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Reboot and you have root again.
PRAISE the lord! I have been to 7 different sites and followed their instructions to the letter and no ROOT.... I finally found this post and the signed Super user did the trick THANKS SO MUCH!
FINALLY!
DEVICE : SAMSUNG GALAXY FIT GT S5670
CURRENT ROM : GB 2.3.6 STOCK
I rooted my device a long time ago..but flashed the recovery few days ago only.
So here's what happened?
i flashed "AMON-RA RECOVERY"..then found it to be old.
then tried to flash the "TJ-STYLE RECOVERY" ...BUT SOMEHOW IT DIDN'T WORKED and ODIN was taking very much time.
so aborted and then flashed "PRATYUSH.CREED 'S RECOVERY"... as mentioned in the guide in the forum that this could backup the STOCK ROM.
THEN as mentioned in the guide i took a NANDROID BACKUP of the stock rom ...(didn't knew the backup was successful or not)..
after creating the backup i tried to flash OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 NIGHTLY.ZIP but the process ended very quickly notifying of successfull flashing...
instead when i rebooted after showing the sumsung animation the Device got hungup at a black screen with android written on it at a little right.
then i tried to restore the NANDROID BACKUP...but the recovery showed MD5 ERROR..
I thought may be a unlocked BOOTLOADER is required ..i googled it but couldn't find the procedure...
i then downloaded and flashed a STOCK_GB_2.3.6.tar.md5 rom..
this worked BUT REPLACED THE CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY WITH STOCK RECOVERY
.
.
.
NOW THE QUESTIONS :
1.why wasn't the NANDROID BACKUP successful ?
2.why didn't the OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 worked ?
3.how can i unlock the BOOT LOADER if it is required for the CUSTOM ROMS ?
4.why the CUSTOM CLOCKWORK MOD got replaced by the STOCK RECOVERY on reflashing with stock rom ?
help me ...

i m a complete noob, but i will try to help u as much as possible ...
i think, there was a prob with flashing of custom recovery,
i m also on custom recovery (dunno which one) i flashed it as flashable zip frm recovery {i think i installed tj style fr odin then flashed the present recovery }
Also, wen u flash stock rom, u need to root it again ..
nondroid problem? mayb due to recovery problem ..
bootloader thing? sorry i dont knw anything bootloader thing ...
If i were u, i will first install tj style recovery from odin(it roots ur phone too, so no need to root it first) then either use it(its said to b most stable recovery around) or flash another recovery as flashable zip frm the present recovery ...
(i will avoid using odin fr each nd every thing ...)
Hope this helps ^^

HOW WOULD I DO THAT..?
means the tj-style recovery i have is in TAR format...
should i UNcompress and recompress it in ZIP format... ?
AND WHAT POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES COULD BE FOR THE ODIN ?
1) Nandroid Backup works only for custom roms. For stock roms u can only take a backup but u cant restore (there's a recovery by pratyush.creed which does restore too but i didn't try so can't say)
2)Perhaps u didn't flash properly so it went into bootloop. Use CWM by TJ-style only and next time, wipe data, cache and dalvik cache and format /system just as a precautionary step before flashing custom rom.
3)Samsung Phones doesn't have locked bootloaders. So to flash a rom, u can do it easily
4) The stock rom u flash via ODIN contains stock recovery as well.
U cant flash recovery unless u have other custom recovery (well there is a flashable zip for CWM by tjstyle but i dont know whether it can be flashed via stock recovery). The only way u can do is through ODIN. Make sure ODIN is set properly and if u have windows 7, run it as administrator and better reinstall drivers.

for the 1st point ..i used the PRATYUSH.CREED recovery already..but the backup restore didn't work for me..as i've also written in the 1st post
as for the 2nd point ...i'll try to do it again correctly and as mentioned by you
FOR THE 3rd AND 4 th POINT :good:
.............THANK YOU
Hello, first of all I apalogize for my english.
I had no problem to unlock bootloader and root. Then I installed CMW and flashed faux's kernel.
But I could not install the last OTA so I decided to go back to stock kernel and stock recovery. OTA still gave me an error message during installation so I given up. Root access was lost.
I went back to faux's kernel and CMW recovery but now it's impossible to root
The first time I rooted with no problem I used this method : http://www.modaco.com/topic/366771-root-your-moto-g-option-1-superboot/
Is there something to do to get back the root access ??
Do you still have cwm as your recovery?
KitKat slo"g" slide
Yes I tried to root with stock recovery and kernel. And with CMW recovery and faux's kernel. It's not working
Edit : Each time I turn on the phone, I have apps optimization like if I had delete dalvik cache
Which cwm do you use at the beginning?
Which cwm did you flash later when you went back?
My recomandation would be to reflash motoboot.img and then stock recovery.img and erase cach and dalvik-cache.
Then you can start from scratch to get root.
Hi, i had the same problem and i rooted my moto with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2585755
works perfect 4 me.

At the beginning : CWM 6.0.4.6 and later it's the same version 6.0.4.6 but via MotoTool.
It doesn't work with your method. I have the french SFR ROM. If I flash the french retail ROM, could it work ?
Edit : Now it's ok for me, I installed the FR retail ROM, then the OTA. The first method I used to root didn't work so I flashed the supersu.motog.zip (given in the link of Dizzyrul3z) with CWM recovery. Now Everything is fine... until the next OTA ^^. Thanks to everybody
