I'm a big user of Opera mini; given the lack of buttons on the Raphael, I'm concerned it is not well-suited for one-handed use. I'm currently using a Treo 700wx and use the exposed keyboard's numeric keys to scroll (2/4/6/8) and #5 to zoom in and out. The whole navigation is extremely fast and smooth. What is the experience like on the Raphael?
Why not just use opera mobile (it's preinstalled)?
smooth zoom, using the touch wheel.
scroll with thumb on screen, or press direction arrows on touch wheel.

and you can rotate the screen with the accelerometer, no need to pull out the keyboard!

Opera mini works perfectly on raphael.
Some webs are very heavy and are surfed much quickly with opera mini.....
What if you're laying in bed on your side reading the phone? Can you turn off the automatic flip thing, because in that position it would always be wrong
I tend to use opera mini when i'm out and about as it uses data compression, hence reducing loading times and the amount of data downloaded. However, i have found that even with the text size set to maximum, the font is still very small and soemtimes difficult to read. It can also be difficult to select items unless you use the stylus.
does the scroll wheel to zoom work in opera mini? otherwise i think it will be impossible to surf one handed due to the lack of buttons.

Nope... the "home" and "back" buttons are not intercepted by Opera Mini so they both bring you back to the TF3D home screen.

There is a version of opera mini 4.2b that supports vga screens and large fonts. From your phone use opera mobile and go to http://mini.opera.com/beta/ Then click the link that says "If this version fails..." and download the first version with multiple certificates.

Thanks for the link.
I installed that version on my Fuze and it works very well except for the fact that I cannot zoom in or out. I can pan around the zoomed out page using the 2, 4, 6 & 8 keys (on the hardware keyboard), but pressing the 5 key only activates the mouse pointer.
Is anyone else having trouble zooming?
In Portrait mode, I use the capacitive scroll sensor (circle around the joystick) to scroll. I had to add "Java" as a running app in Advanced Config 3.3 SmartTouch settings to do this. In portrait, hitting the Back button does not scroll back (minimizes the app), so you have to use your finger to hit the back/right soft key on the screen. In Settings, make the font the largest helps to make this bigger.
Opera Mini 4.2 works better in landscape on this device. You can use the arrow keys to move around on the keyboard. You can use the Del//<-- key to go back. You can also use Function Lock (double press Fn) to lock in the numerica keys for scrolling around, though 5 does not do anything for me.
Thanks for your help.
I've never used Opera Mini before and I think maybe I just wasn't using it properly. I didn't have "overview mode" enabled in the settings, and I believe that must be enabled for zooming to function.
I also configured Java to use Smarttouch, which is allowing me to scroll a box around the screen which will zoom to that portion of the screen when I click the center button. Thanks for the tip.
I can't get the zoom feature to work at all in landscape mode though. It just stays zoomed in all the time. I can pan around the screen using the number keys, but I can't zoom out.
Hi!
I'm really satisfied with my HD2 except for 2 things:
1. It doesn't play flash as promised right away (luckily I found the fixOperaFlash in this Forum)
2. When you have large dropdown menus, they are a real pain in the ass to use. Especially the large ones, which are bigger than the screen - e.g. if you are trying to select a brand name from a used car search site. It always takes me several tries before I get to move the menu bar after the dropdown menu appeared. It always scrolls around or the context menu appears.
Is there any possibility to get an easy to scroll dropdown menu like on the iPhone or the G2 Google Phone? I think this is somehow an Opera related problem, not exactly one of the HD2. But on the other hand, on other windows mobile phones you have a stylus, which makes it easier to move the scroll bar. With the HD2 you have not stylus, just the real nice capacitive display. Therefore I think there is a strong need to have flick scrolling drop down menu in Opera on the HD2. Can anybody help please? Thanx in advance.
It is excellent in iPhone for true.
However, it is not possible at the moment in HD2
It is because of the limitations in native windows OS I believe.

The drop down menus in Skyfire are much better, so it's really an Opera limitation.
Do you tested new version of Opera Mobile 10 beta 2?

Actually he is referring to the dropdown menus within websites in browser.
I donno if you mean the same.
In iphone, the smaller dialog box like selecting language in a website, are different & easy to select as shown below (captured from my iphone 3GS)

While the Iphone's method is indeed good it's far from optimal as I like to see all of the options at the same time, which is why I find skyfire's implementation to be the best.

BTW, have you browsed with iphone? or are you comparing photos\videos?
It is very easy to scroll with iphone that you don't regret for not showing the more items in the list.
Iam using both and i FEEL the iphone's one is better in this area.
Personal opinions may differ though
Just checked with Opera Mobile 10 Beta2.
The scrolling in drop down menu works well within the popped up list.
Excellent.
I love my TF. I hate browsing the web on it. Such a shame that the job it is meant to do, is the job it seems to do most poorly. Perhaps its down to the browsers, since I have yet to find one that doesnt get in the way of my surfing. I would be happy if I could find one with a navigation bar that doesnt disappear every time I scroll down the page. I have plenty screen for it, why can't I at least have the option? Is there any browser with a static navigation bar? I'm not using a phone, so I'd like my navigation buttons to be accessable regardless of where on the page I'm at. I'd love to have my tabs static too! Why is this such a hard request? If firefox would just port it's pc interface over it's android browser(which i find stable but a crappy interface), I would be in love.
Oh, and I hate gestures. I like actual buttons with real text labels.
Please call me a noob and tell me what I'm looking for already exists. I will praise you for it.

Just go to browser settings and go to the labs tab and then unchecked the quick controls box
I already have that unchecked. The problem is that when i scroll down, the back, forward, refresh, and home buttons disappear, along with the address bar. I want it to always be visible. from what i've seen, every browser for android does this, and it makes me batty.
just tap the screen and it comes back/ reappears.
I get that, but it's one tap and wait longer than I want to deal with. 5 browsers on my TF, and they all have this problem. I wonder if the ipad browser is any better...
have you tried dolphin mini? The addess bar stays on the top

Hi there, just wondering do you have problem with opera mobile displaying everything website smaller when compared to other browsers example stock browser. Every time opera will load the page with such small fonts it hurts to read. I tried to set the default zoom to 125% it looks better but problem is as soon as I click a link or open a new page, it will zoom out and gimme the small fonts again. Anyway to fix the zoom level?

hey
type in the address bar:
opera:config
hit enter, you'll see a page with diff. settings open up.
scroll down to:
"user prefs"
tap it and it'll expand then again scroll down to:
minimum font size
change the value from default 9 to whatever you like then scroll down to the bottom
and hit "save" button then hit 'ok' in the pop up.
also to speed up opera even more try this:
find "performance" section
tap to open
then scroll down and change the following values:
Max Connections Server 6
Max Connections Total 6
Max Persistent Connections 6
after, scroll down and hit save button then hit 'OK' in the pop up.
you can experiment with diff. values for "connections" settings, however I wouldn't go over 8,8,8 or 10,10,10 as some websites might load slower than with default values (4,6,4)
my browser doesn't always keep the saved settings, sometimes it'll revert to default values...
so it's really a hit or miss, at least for me...
also, the 'default zoom', 125% or whatever % you specify, happens when you double tap the text on screen, it'll zoom that amount
and also reflow the text to fit screen.

The problem with increasing the Minimu font size from 9 to just 12, is it will cut off the right side of somw sites. Like on xda the search button on the top right get cut off if u increase the size. I don't think opera mobile is made for table.

So I guess that means no then? (Automatically reflow, ie without the double tap, as Dolphin does)
@Paul22000,
I tried both Boat(v2.3), Miren and Dolphin (v7.0). They all behave as the same. When zoom-in the page with fingers, the text will not auto-reflow. My cell phone is Android 2.3.5. It's the default design of Android.
The text will reflow when you use these browsers on Android 2.2/2.1.
Another choice, for example in Boat Browser, you can enable "Show pinch-zoom button" in preference. When zooming with the buttons, the text will reflow according to the web page scale.
Hope this could help you.

Weird, the text automatically reflows in Dolphin on my phone. It's instantaneous too, no double tap required.
wondering which browser you are using for your Note and is able to handle and take advantage of the extra screen real estate
I'm using Dolphin because it let's me easily choose for a Desktop Useragent. I tried about:debug and about:config on the Galaxy Note stock browser but I couldn't find any option to change the UA-settings. Skyfire is cool for when you don't have flash if you ask me and feels more like a mobile browser. Excuse me if things have changed a lot the past few months because I haven't really tried it recently.
Dolphin and Opera are the best browsers! I prefer Dolphin - no bugs, best performance, easy interface and closest to PC desktop browser.
Im using Maxthon cuz it can sync with the PC version, have custom string, can switch between www and wap.
Tested downloading speed (10 graphic heavy sites) and
Boat Browser mini was consistantly fastest along with stock. Opera Mobile a close second.
Browsers like dolphin are more feature rich but just slower.
Xscope Pro. It's smoother than the stock browser.
dolphin...due to the speed dials and bookmark bars
Dolphin,tabs,ui,fast,bookmark bar
Opera becauste of the text reflow after zooming. I couldn't find that in any other browser.

for the note, the command is 'about:useragent', lol.
and the easiest way to set it is to save it as a bookmark, and save the bookmark to your homescreen. then when you want to quickly use it, just tap the bookmark, tap the address bar and it will show 'about:useragent', then hit go, choose your agent.
its not quite as easy as the dolphin set once and forever, but the stock browser is GPU accelerated and is much faster and so much smoother than dolphin HD.
For some reason in boat browser and others it only reflows using the on-screen zoom icon.
QUOTE=olympicchicken;19491662]Opera becauste of the text reflow after zooming. I couldn't find that in any other browser.[/QUOTE]
As of a few days ago I've become a huge opera fan. Because of this thread I've tried all of the other major ones and I gotta say opera beats the pants off of them for one huge reason. Try typing a new post on this site with your mobile browser. At least a few sentences. Opera wraps the text in the text entry box while the others don't. When you see errors in your post and you go back over it, tapping on words to fix, opera is the only one that's not buggy. With opera you type the new word and you're done. With the others, half the time the new word pops up a sentence or two away (!!). Also with the others, it takes twice as many clicks to reposition the cursor and start writing, and if you're trying to insert the cursor right at a line break you're screwed.
Opera seriously blows the others out of the water as far as usability. Especially if you do any text entry. I wrote this with boat browser, and my previous long post on this forum using dolphin, and I gotta say, you couldn't pay me not to use opera from now on.
Yes this posting/box typing thing can be a pain. ...but its usually after typing quite a bit. Briefly changing to landscape and typing corrects it...but it IS a pain. Didn't know Opera corrected it...but it wouldn't change me over because I depend on fairly fast mobile data trainsmission for what I do and Opera lags a bit in that dept. It is a great browser tho...it would be my second choice for sure.
Dolphin Browser HD because I like the gestures and easy access tabs.

Now that you mentioned it I find the stock browser runs significantly smoother than any other browser dolphin opera included.
Thanks!
Stock. it's smooth as butter.
Dolphin Browser HD together with Opera (as 2nd) is what I use.
I liked Dolphin until I noticed that the more tabs left open the more CPU usage it was using, even when not in use. Tried both HD and mini.
Stuck to Opera now, quick and smooth and doesn't use up CPU usage when closed.
Dolphin HD is it!
Dolphin HD is my favourite because not only is it fast and with a simple user interface, it is the only one that actually has an 'Exit' in the menu -allowing me to completely quit the application. Others remain in memory unless you kill them from the task manager.
