[Q] Whats up with the GPS? - HTC Sensation

Anyone know how to improve the GPS accuracy on the Sensation XE?
So far its proved far worse than my HTC Desire. It takes longer to get a lock and the accuracy is all over the place. Whats going on?

Can't confirm that. On the contrary, compared to other phones I've had, like the Geeksphone Zero and the HTC Desire S, GPS on the Sensation XE absolutely rocks. It gets a fix in a few seconds, even indoors. Nothing to complain about the accuracy, either.

This FIX improved my gps a lot. After that i get a fix i a few seconds ;-)
The standard gps.config is based on a generall one that works for all countries. If you follow the fix and edit your gps.config to your contry, the gps fix gets much faster.

Does the accuracy improve though? I measure my cycle into work every day and on my desire the distance varied from 3.30 to 3.35 miles. On the XE it varies from 3.30 to 3.75 miles ... thats a significant error ...

GPS 0-60

Does anyone know of a program that'll pick up GPS speed and time how long it takes you to get from 0 to 60?
Cheers
i dont think you will be able to do this with any accuracy. gps reported speed is very accurate when you are travelling at a constant speed but when you are accelarating there is always a lag.

I understand the issue with lag and am happy I can mathmatically compensate for it...I'd just like a way for the device to automatically time.
you could try one of these:

Heat
Hi,
I was running the 1.4 and now the 1.2 rom and the only time mine heated up was when on charge. Are you charging your with BT and WIFI on at the same time?? My understanding of heat issues in general across most phone models and platforms comes down to a BT or WIFI being turned on...
Cheers,
Ben
Yes I do have Wifi on when charging. I will try turning off and see if heating goes away with charging. I am finding that the phone is staying hot even after charging. Another thing I have found is the battery doesn't last any time at all. Maybe 5-6 hours at best. I am not even using the phone of browsing.
Can you tell me why you have gone back to version 1.2?
Thanks,

Performance.
Hi CyberMobile,
Myself and a few others that I have read about have had major performance issues with 1.4. I tried 1.4 for a couple of weeks and over time it got noticeably slower. To the point it was taking minutes for the Rosie desktop to start after closing an app. I flashed 1.2 over the weekend and it also has noticeable lag but still much fast then 1.4. This has been my experience, I cannt speak for everyone and it is highly likely that it is directly related to the fact the 32B has only 192MB of RAM instead of what the 32A model has which is 288MB. I have also read many others being perfectly ok so who knows. With battery life on your phone I would also take into account and polling intervals you have set for exchange active sync if you use it or any other applications. The shorter you polling intervals you have set for these types of apps the harder your phone will be working.
Cheers
Ben

re: Heat
My Rogers HTC Magic has been heating up big time. I was confused as to why and I also found it difficult to find anyone else on the internet complaining about the same problem, until now.
I called Rogers late last week to ask them about the heating up issue. My device heats up at the bottom section mainly (behind the buttons and scroll ball). Even holding the device has made me feel uneasy, as it heats up my hand considerably - not sure if this is just the device heating up, or if it's cooking my body up through EMF.
Rogers said that they didn't hear of any heat problems/reports, so they sent me out a new device. I should be getting it tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.
By the way, it was heating up with the Hero ROM, so I decided to switch back to the original Rogers image and it TOO is heating up like a mofo.
Will keep you updated...

The antenna is down there, so it makes sense.
I wouldn't worry about EMF though, the waves are simply too fat to do any cellular damage.
Not really surprised that there's more heat really.. I mean you are overclocking the CPU (384MHz -> 528MHz) in most of these roms remember - and it's being taxed more because the ROM itself is more demanding than cupcake was.

Unfortunately, this is also happening in the original unrooted stock ROM.

Best GPS Accuracy?

I just moved from an HTC Desire to the Nexus S. Running CM7.
The best GPS accuracy I've ever seen for the Nexus S is 5m. On my Desire, I routinely had accuracy of 1-3m. The average accuracy on the Nexus S is 15m (!!!).
Yes, I know there are many threads about this.
But before I resell, I want to get a sense of the range of experiences. Is my accuracy about average for the Nexus S? What's the best that people are getting? On what ROMS/Android versions?
I appreciate the feedback.
I find that the GPS is affected greatly by differing Roms. My best success was actually on the stock pre-root setup. Would take on average 1-2 minutes. Switching to other roms increased it no matter which I have run. CM7 and MIUI seem to connect the quickest. Miui is often the quickest for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input.
I'm entirely concerned with accuracy, though, not time to first lock.
I get a lock very very quickly on my Nexus S.
But it never displays the level of accuracy I've been used to with other phones for years now -- 1 to 3 meters while driving.
Instead, the Nexus S I am using does no better than 10 meters while driving, and sometimes worse.
Pretty sure that the GPS receiver on this phone sucks. Takes forever to get a lock, sometimes never getting one at all. My POS moto spice would get a lock almost instantly. I assume the mediocre at best receiver is directly related to the inaccuracy mentioned above.

[Q] Rooting is it worth it

Had my Desire S a couple of months now on o2 in the Uk and really like it ,impressed with the speed so was wondering, would rooting it really make it much better?
Mate is banging on about doing it , but want to weigh up the benefits and possible pitfalls (apart from obviously bricking it) and also the best way of going about it .
I had a friend who just bought it too! He is new to Android and he loves it already..
Anyway, it's really up to you understand if rooting your phone will be useful, if you are happy like this, you could wait until you will be more confident with Android, or until you will need an extra power (by overclock your CPU for example).
In general a rooted phone with a custom ROM is faster that a stock one, and it doesn't have all the bloadware that HTC put on it.
You will be able to update your radio to improve the signal (and maybe fix the famous issues with it), overlock your CPU, install apk that allows you to back up your system, clear cache, customize your android in the deep, and so on...
The downsides could be the lost of your warranty and a small possibility to brick your phone...
But again is entirely up to you, regarding myself, I rooted my phone as soon as I bought it last year, happy since then!
Yes, it's definitely worth it. You can get the impeccable sense 3.0, a blazing fast 1.7 Ghz processor, and a ton of customization. BUT, YOU MUST KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING ! If you mess with the wrong stuff, you can permanently brick your device. Also, flashing is a little complicated, so do it only if you're comfortable with hacking.

Wow, battery must me draining at incredible speed !
sadly though without the xtc clip i don't see much of a chance for rooting becoming available on the desire s.
I was fortunate to have a soff phone. Till now the advantage of root I have take is by installing market enabler which let's me download apps currently not available in my region. Secondly I was able to install titanium backup to back my whole phone.
Now I am looking into roms and how to go around it. I am a total android noob with this one bring my very first experience.

Yes, at 1.7 ghz , battery life is low. But, you dont always need 1.7 ghz. 1.5 ghz or even 1.2 ghz is much faster than stock.
Cheers for the advice but I suppose the point is rather moot until I get S-off

As i had to return my Desire (the old one) due to overheating and rebooting under heavy use (for example navigation) without having it overclocked, I surely don't want to force these problems with overclocking.
Does anyone use the Desire S for navigation on a regular base? I am really interested if those reboot problems still exist. I am sure overclocking isn't very good for the hardware on a long term.
If you can use the power only for benchmarks then its only about e-peen comparison How about a watercooling mod

I've had it reboot once sure to overheating whilst using navigation. It was on a very hot day though. Several things you can do to stop it too.
Take out out any case.
Have your car air fans on low, and directed at the phone. Just get some air movement around it.
If you have root, underclock when using navigation.
If like me you are on Orange and SICK of the poor 3g service, buy an off line navigation app. I just got copilot and it's very good, and doesn't put half the strain on the phone. Did a two hour journey with it, and it only used 20% battery! That would have flattened it using google.
I think google maps has just updated to be more efficient in navigation and use less power, but haven't put it to the test though.

Hello, I have been using the Desire S for just over two months by now and have used navigation extensively for long periods of time (5 to 10 hrs on a row). Here are my observations:
- first of all, the phone required a reboot just once during all this period and it had to do with some stupid automatic download/update from Google. I wanted to stop it but pressed the wrong (and many at the same time) buttons. The phone just resested itself from the blue but came back to life normalul afterwards;
- the reset had to do with Googlemaps but navigation was not on;
- otherwise I use IGO, works flawlessly;
- overheated, under direct sunlight beneath the windshield; solved the problem by positioning the unit next to the air/AC
- at night, the temperature (measured by Battery indicator pro,) never rose above 39 celsius so I say there aren't any overheating issues there.
I'm an Android virgin but i must say, yes.

My Virtuous Sensation demo at 1.7ghz.

I thought I would share how responsive the Virtuous Sensation rom is at 1.7ghz. I've not used Sense in ages so would be interested to know if this is quicker? The site used in the browser if
you want to test for yourself is forums.overclockers.co.uk as they are quite big pages to load , was on a wifi connection btw.
The speed has not been altered in any way. You may want to enlarge the screen as it's in portrait mode. Tried to capture the responsiveness of it. Not sure how it compares to Sense as I've not used it in ages.
you see some jumps due to the frame drops of the capturing software.
That's fast.

I also use Virtuous, & I love how fast & smooth it is. I've played w/ the sense rooms a little but they don't near compare in responsiveness. Which kernel are you using, & how bad does it tear through battery life? I've gotta try this kernel for myself.
SebastianFM's kernel 1.30.4_1782mhz
Just seen Open Sensation has the Camera working now. Might give that a try.
yes ,it goes well
That's fast.
