Going Back To Stock - HTC Inspire 4G

I was just curious. If I'm running Cyanogenmod 7, could I restore my phone to stock using the download from here:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/inspire-att/downloads/
for the Gingerbread update? Would that turn S-ON?
I've flashed many roms, but I always want to make sure I can return to stock if need be. Thanks for your info.

I would also like to know that will updating this Gingerbird ROM i.e. "RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_Cingular_US_2.47.502.7_Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_200368_signed" from the above site, locks the sim to at&t?? or will I be also able to use any other carrier??

I know how to go back to stock using those tools. That's not the point of the question. I want to know if using the tool I posted will also take the phone back to stock. I've returned to stock many times using the hack kit without a problem, but will THIS tool work as well?

I see no tool on that page you linked. There is only a stock RUU. And that will not give you s-on. You need the AAHK or Gene's tool.

yeah, I'm also confused.
OP, there is no need to re-invent the wheel. Gene and attn1 have made great products that will get you back to stock. Why pave your own way when someone has done all the dirty work for you? But if you're dead set on it, you try it and let us know.

[Q] going to start experimenting with my Nexus s

Finally got a nexus s, & wanna start experimenting with root & ROMs, but i used to htc sense phones in which i can just use stock rom exe to go back to stock ROM, how do i do the same thing with my nexus s, i mean if something goes wrong is there any way of going back to stock ROM,
don't say just do the nandroid, because that means rooting first, can somebody please help me on this one
starting experimenting
if you want experimenting with your NS you have to root the phone first. It is really easy to root the nexus s, just have a look at this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
and then you can make a nandroid backup, like what you said.
if somethings goes wrong anyway, there is a way to go to stock as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093
just try, in worst case you can go to stock
The answer is Nandroid.
Nexus phones are different. Super easy.
Fastboot OEM unlock
Accept the warning
Fastboot flash recovery blah.img
Make nandroid, mount it back it up etc. Then flash whatever rom u want.
If u want to go back to stock, nandroid recover then
Fastboot OEM lock
say yes and you're back to stock.
-Nexus S
It is NOT necessary to oem unlock the phone to flash clockwork or a custom rom. See this method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865
Also, if you're going to oem unlock, be aware it completely wipes all data off the phone, including anything on the sdcard you may have put there (like pics from the camera).
Finally, the most bizarre thing about the original post is that you're willing to flash custom roms, but not to root? Huh? You're aware that most custom roms come PRE-ROOTED, aren't you? What's the difference? Just curious....
By the way, Google's own blog states they intentionally made this phone easy to root and add customizations to...it's extremely safe and easy.

thanks for the info, i said, i want a way to going back, i want root, why the hell not?
polandy posted above a perfect guide to return back to stock just as shipped through manufacturer. Just make sure you relock the BOOTLOADER for any warranty purposes. Now you can flash all you want and can go back to "stock". Here is the link again, http://theunlockr.com/2011/01/20/how-to-unroot-the-nexus-s/

I didn't say a there was European version of the Nexus S (yet)...but it's well known that there is one coming. I said this was a European version of the ROM.
Did you read the thread that has the files? The first post says that the guy obtained it from Samsung service center in England. Then someone asked if there was a US version, and no one corrected him in saying that this one was or wasn't. Granted, Samsung England could easily have access to US ROMs from the Samsung mothership, so that alone is not proof it is European.
However, if you download the rar file from that thread, and unrar it, you'll see that it contains a file named "CSC_I9020_EUR.tar" which is clearly a EURopean CSC file, making this a European ROM.
The PDA file's images may be 100% the same as a stock US phone, but until someone flashes this stuff from Odin and somehow runs a diff against a stock US ROM, I'm not assuming it's the same thing just on faith. You're welcome too, of course.
What's interesting to me is that there is a CSC at all. I don't think our Nexus S uses it, or at least it doesn't use it in the same way as the Samsung issued ROMS do. CSC is carrier specific customizations, if you're not familiar with it; it's a way to add bloatware and carrier settings to the phone.

Rooting on 2.3 using GingerBreak?

Does anyone know if this is possible? It's supposed to be as simple as one click and it roots the phone (which is what I wanna do.. keep it easy). For some reason, it was taking a while and it didn't work. I'm just guessing, but is it possible it might not work since 2.3 is relatively new? If that's the case, do I gotta go back to 2.2 for this to work or something like that? Or is there another app I can use that'll work just as easy on 2.3?
Any response is appreciated.
Thanks.

no you can not root 2.3.3 at all. you will need to put recovery on and flash a prerooted rom from the development section. all instructions are there.

Rooting and back to stock.

I am new to this rooting stuff and been spent most of yesterday learning and asking questions. Here is what I did and some questions I got from it.
1. I rooted using the guide from ace hack it, took me a few tries but got it working.
2. Noticed I went from GB 2.3 to 2.2 after it. So is there a way to get to 2.3. This will lead to another question a few.
3. I loaded my first Rom off the SD and it was Leedriod. That gave GB 2.3 but was having difficulty with gps. But I was happy to know the rooting and Rom laps worked for me.
4. So I tried the offical ATT RUU through usb and HTC sense. It worked but also put me back to stock. Is this a way of putting your phone back to stock? I do have ace hack it on the phone because when I reboot I can get into it but if I select recovery from the menu it seems to lockup my phone.
5. Is the term Rom and RUU interchangeable? I see people using both or am I reading it wrong?
Thanks for any help. I have been reading pages of this stuff and its making my head spin. I just wanted to ask some questions to help understand this better, since I'm new to it.

Oh I forgot one.
A lot of instruction say to 'clear cache'. How do you do that? Is that the wipe cache option I see from the ace hack it menu?
Thanks

Ruu=Radio Update Utility
Rom=the OS you see/use on the phone.
When you ran the Ruu, you unrooted your phone. You'll have to rerun the Hack Kit to regain root but not S-off and to be able to flash a different (preferably custom) rom.
Do you have a preference for Sense or AOSP?
I figured that I had to rerun which is ok with me.
I don't really use sense because there aren't many options to it. So I would try asop but o don't know what is

If you're S-OFF, all you have to do is flash ClockWorkMod recovery to regain root; no need to redo the whole hack kit.

If you ran the RUU, it will return you to a stock ROM, but you are still S-OFF which is the biggest hurdle in rooting your phone. If you want to root after running the RUU, just flash ClockWorkMod recovery via HBOOT and then install a rooted ROM.
That's dang good info. From what I knew, you had to rerun part of the hack kit to reboot. How does flashing CWM root the stock rom?

It stands for Radio Unit Upgrade. But please forget this name: it is confusing, because it upgrade the Radio Rom & the OS ROM, or only one of them.

Easy enough to get the real answer. When I first saw you call it Radio Update Utility it didn't sound right. So I googled it. I saw about 4 names that people gave it including Radio Unit Upgrade but then I thought where did I see it before. Oh yes, right from the upgrade utility.
So I tried recovery again. And my phone keeps getting locked up. The device appears with a red triangle with a red exclamation mark. So i tried the downgrade from the hack it kit. It worked but i still get the same thing. So i tried reverse gold card and i got a error. The same that i got before i reformatted the SD to get the root to work.
So later today, I will reformat and run the hack kit again. I am probably going to try Coredroid ROM.

[Q] Easy CWM without s-off

I was just wondering if there's an easy way to root the inspire, without turning s off...i JUST want Clockwork Mod recovery and i ONLY want to flash a rom...i want absolutely NO DEAL AT ALL with radios, s-off, eng s-off, the advanced ace hack kit, or anything other than all that stuff, because what happened last time is that whenever i flashed a radio, i couldn't use wifi make calls or listen to music, and i wasn't even able to get into CWM to install a ROM. so, I downloaded the RUU, used it, and my phone is now in "out of the box" condition software-wise. can't i just use this superoneclick, flash CWM with rom manager, and install a ROM just like on the SGS phones? i don't want to semi-brick my phone again, assistance would be appreciated...thank you!
If it's root with S-on you want, I found a 1 click S-on tool somewhere, I'll put it in my dropbox. Just root with the ace hack kit, then use the tool to get s-on. bingo.

Nothing that you said makes a whole lot of sense. Ace hack kit is stupidly simple and also a one click. If you encountered so many problems than you did not fully read the "effen manual". All you need to do is run hack kit and then install a Rom via cwm. It does not require a whole lot of work. If you can not obtain root with hack kit than you have no business installing custom roms.

I do not see how your radio could have gotten messed up. All you do is run option 1 "hack ace" and when its done you have root with stock radio and stock Rom. It doesn't change your radio version. I'm not sure how much easier it could be. I can't emphasize how important it is that you fully read and study things. The link you supplied for the super one click is not even compatible with the inspire 4G which I just found out by reading the thread. Ace hack kit is the super one click for the inspire. I do not beleive you are grasping the simplicity of the tool. There is really only one step, if your doing anyhting more than one step you are doing it wrong. So, like I said in my earlier response, if you can not make ace hack kit work then you are not going to be able to root your phone and install a custom Rom. I suggest you read every single word of the manual, yes every word and try it again. It really is easy.

I'm just clarifying. I had an Aria for awhile before getting my Inspire. Unrevoked was the only rooting option we had until revolutionary.io. Unrevoked was only able to temporarily glitch the hboot into letting it install CWM recovery. That was all we got; no S-OFF.
You could, in theory, gain S-OFF with gfree, flash a recovery, then go back to S-ON with gfree all during the rooting process. In fact, I think this might not be a bad idea as most Inspire users will never really need an S-OFF rooted phone and it gets some into trouble.

Check the development section. There are plenty of threads on this. You will need to download a NANDROID of the 2.3.3 OTA, and restore to stock recovery using nVflash.
