[Q] Why Latitude (or Maps) is always open in background? - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have EVER latitude opened in background, I can kill with "android assistant" app, but in a few seconds will appear again, and not only 1 instance it opened 3 or 4 and consume about 25% of CPU and 15mb of RAM.
I sign out of latitude, I clear cache of level 2, but.. Latitude continue there.
I'm using kirillos 9.3 Rom, and G3MOD kernel 2.2.2, so I don't know if I have to ask here so I don't know if it is a problem with ROM, kernel, maps or froyo.

Hmm, there s an app by which you can stop this. It Autostarts. Then you can force the latitude/maps not to start automatically. Search in google you ll get it.

I google it for hours, so I don't find a solution, can you explain me how to do?
Thanks.

try the app: autorun manager

I tried some days ago, it can't solve the problem.
This app, is a task killer, and also can to stop the autorrun. But this is not a solution. I want to use maps on some times, it is usefully but, i don't want to have it in background when I don't need!
I see in onthers androids phones that don't have so many instances of latitude, I have EVER 3 or 4, and when I kill it it will restart in a few seconds.
I read over internet that is a commun problem, but I don't see a solution

^Not sure that it'll fix the problem, but you can definitely give it a shot!
Open Latitude -> Menu -> More -> Settings -> Location Reporting -> and select "Do not update my location".

I do "do not update my location" and Exit of latitude, but not solve the problem. The four instances of Latitude are in background loaded
Can you take a look on your phones with "android assistant" or similar app if already have latitude loaded in RAM?

I think it's because some 3rd party apps require location like Facebook etc... and Facebook is always open to receive push notifications.

So, it is possible to know what applications are using maps?
I don't have facebook installed. But have Viber and Whatsapp

[Q] app respawn mode : where is the conf file ?

hello,
This is a question for android experts :
I'd like (very much) to know where Android puts the informations about app respawn mode.
In Unix/linux it's in /etc/inittab ... but in Android ?
The main app is boring me is MAPS ! It doesn't start at boot neither on connectivity change or whatever because I'm using Autostarts to block it. But when I launch it, use it and kill it ... it appears again and again, using a significant part of the galaxy 3 small ram ...
So, Maps (and others app too) is configured as a respawn app and I'd like to change this ... it's irritating me !
i've been googling this and didn't find anything about android's respawn functionality.
thanks !
[EDIT: Long tap on Maps in Android Task Manager offer the possibility to open the InstallerManager. Tap on "Force stop" in the InstallerManager stops Maps and it doesn't restarts ... so, perhaps it's not a question of respawn mode ... ] -- This solution is not easy, I'd like to know how this works !
Android uses Intents.
If an app or service calls the Intent getLocation it opens maps
Thanks for this info !
But when this appens I'm running with very few services and no apps and with no connectivity available ... so which service/app is asking for my position and why ? In "settings" the option "get my position by carrier" is set ... it can be that ... I'm going to investigate a little bit more ...
Also, if it works this way, why Maps doesn't restarts after taping "force close" in the InstallerManager ? This means some information is set somewhere to tell the system that Maps is no more available for automatic start (If I tap on maps it starts) ... Strange stuff !
[EDIT : Settings.apk is calling maps: if I run maps then unselect "get my locatin by carrier" and kill maps it doesn't restarts ! But so, is there a way to tell the system "Starts Maps only when I tap on it ??? And one more strange thing : all my maps autostarts events list are off (using autostarts and gemini app manager) : so, why it restarts after getting started once time and do not starts at logon (Settings is running at logon) ?? ]
Pfff ... not easy to understand ...
yeah, that would be interesting where to find this settings.
But in other cases freeze the app with tb and/or use a program specific taskkiller.
Today I launch maps ... "use carrier for location" was disable in Settings ... and maps respawn after killing it ...
Grrrrrr ....
Nobody knows how this çàçà)ç_'(&é"(è works ?

[Q] Temp Root, cant disable some apps

Hello all,
I have a temp root on my sensation and have disabled quite a bit of apps and processes, but now am running into trouble. There are quite a few that just say "killed" instead of disabled. I enter the package name as it is shown using that system info app, and make sure that others still enable/disable.
Some include processes that google maps is running, as well as my calendar. Do I have to disable google maps and my calendar to stop this? I like google maps, but not this network locator it runs constantly and this rate location process.
Also, I saw someone recommend disabling some laputa stuff, but NONE will disable, only "killed".
Im new to all this, so I have no idea why. Ive also searched, and found nothing.
Thanks,
Matt

You don't really need one... the Samsung one is perfect

You really shouldn't need to download a task killer unless your still on a really old version of android such as 1.6. Any advice you are reading about the benefits of task killers are likely outdated and are remnants of the older day's of android. In fact installing one on anything above 2.1 will likely be detrimental to performance and battery life. Android will manage and kill processes on it's own, and if you start killing tasks with a 3rd party app you will likely find that android starts them right back up again. This constant kill and restart will eat up cpu cycles and drain battery. Let Android manage tasks and memory on it's own the way it was designed to.
Instead, focus on tweaking the settings of apps that you don't often use to ensure that they are not running in the background when you don't need them. I'm not sure what your goal is with the task killer, whether it's battery or performance related, but some good places to start tweaking are here:
Facebook --> If you don't need to be notified of updates and you don't care much for syncing contacts then disable the syncing feature from within the app. Otherwise it will run in the background and call in every hour or so looking for updates to sync.
Google Talk --> If you don't use this, then start the app and make sure that auto sign in is disabled. This should keep it from autolaunching in the background and signing you in.
News & Weather app --> Go into settings and manually specify your location rather then using cell triangulation or gps settings to determine your location. These will both drain your battery. Also set the app to download a very high auto refresh, like 6 hours, or disable it completely so that it only refreshes when you actually launch the app.
Location settings --> It's best to disable "use wireless networks" and "gps" unless you are actually using location based services. I personally only turn them on when i need to use them. This saves a bunch of battery by not constantly pinging cell towers to determine your location throughout the day.
To get an idea of what else you can tweak, go into Settings --> Manage Applications --> Running, and have a look at what apps are currently running. More then likely each app should have some sort of settings available that will help you manage what it actually does in the background.
Also, keep in mind that part of Androids strategy in launching apps quickly is to keep the commonly used apps open in the background and ready to launch. If your phone does not feel sluggish or slow, then don't fix what aint broken, leave it be.
Hope this helps.

Multiple Questions about Samsung droid charge

Hello,
I recently rooted my phone and installed Eclipse 2.0 on my phone. I had quite a few problems with it afterwards:
1. Even though I registered the new install with the same google account my paid apps as well as free apps are not getting automatically downloaded to the phone.
2. Ever since I did the new install my screen is not automatically adjusting itself in bright sunlight and this is especially noticeable when I am driving around using my google navigation. I have setup options to auto - adjust brightness.
3. I sometimes notice that even now my CPU spikes up and my phone appears frozen(though it is lot less frequent with the new install). I was wondering if there is any app that will record a history of which app is using cpu. I don't need an app that tells me which app is using cpu right now because when the phone is frozen I can't use that app anyway but I want an app that will record which app used cpu 5-10 minutes ago and possibly give me a graph.
4. With the new eclipse install I got an app called 'Car Home' that automatically starts up when it connects to my car bluetooth. Is there any app that can have my phone automatically play a playlist, pandora etc.?
5. In Google navigation I see that it brings up a history of locations that I had previously visited but many times a place that I had visited a couple of days ago is not there, I guess since the app based upon time of the week tries to predict where you will be travelling next. Is there any way to search history or any place that Google nav stores history?
I can answer #4 for you and that is to download Tasker. It's kind of confusing at first but it is an extremely powerful application that does exactly what you want.
as for 1-3 i recommend checking your md5 on the downloaded .zip i'm assuming and if that isn't the problem I recommend using an odin file and flash it that way as you get no errors that way.
because no one else is having those errors you're talking about it leads me to think that it is a bad install so do the above.
1. You can see all your apps that you've downloaded in the My Apps section, All Apps.
2. Make sure your screen is clean near the photosensor. Also, I like to use the slide status bar to adjust brightness. Also, I like to use Brightness Widget.
3. Not sure how to find the culprit easily, but I suggest running OS Monitor. Keep OS Monitor active and on your screen. Watch it until you see stuff spike.
4. Tasker is ultimate, not sure if there is something easier or not though.
5. No clue, but you can easily manage your locations via a Web browser at a computer if you are logged into your Gmail and you go to Google Maps. From there you can add destinations which syncs with your phone right away. I think you can add destinations in the Google Maps app on the phone, too.
FWIW, the only ROM where my apps have redownloaded automatically after flashing was Humble 5.0. but I think I'm in the minority in experiencing this.
my suspician is that since I have flashed so many ROMs so many times, I noticed multiple Charge devices available on my Google Play account, and I thought I would clean that up by deleting some of them.
My experience is that if I log into my Google account during my device setup, it automatically redownloads my apps. I don't want that, so I always skip that step. If I wait and do it through Accounts and Sync in the settings menu, it doesn't redownload automatically.
I also have 3 Charge's in my account, but they're all a result of CLN replacements. I've never seen a new one show up due to a ROM flash.
Re-Flash
So I was having the same problems with my Charge. All I did was re-flash the rom and it works perfect now.
One more question. I am perpetually on low RAM. Is it because some of my apps are installed on internal memory and not on the SD Card? Should I move all apps to my SD Card?
Also will Tasker automatically be able to start a playlist on Pandora or Google Music or will it just start the app?

make sure you are on the new pbj and you shouldn't have a ram problem. I have 100 apps i think and none of them are installed on my sd card so that has nothing to do with that problem
as for tasker it'll take some research but I know it integrates well with some apps settings and what not but I could not give you a definite answer. sorry.

[Q] Google Maps battery drain

Has anyone else noticed Maps generating a lot of wakelocks in recent versions? I'm not using Latitude, and with Maps installed, network location is always the top wakelock, even when I never open maps. When I remove maps, the wakelock goes away, and the battery life gets better.
I'm banging my head on the wall here...it wasn't like this is older versions, but lately I can't seem to do anything to calm it down, short of uninstalling/freezing it. It's not like I use it much, but it is nice for it to be there on the rare occasion that I do need it.
use an autorun manager to block it. one of the free versions allows for 4 toggles and I used them all on facebook (but for some reason maps isn't located in this program) so that doesn't really help your problem but i'll do some app research and report back. that'll probably be the only way to stop it.
edit: use gemini task manager and long click on maps and then configure auto run (root) i unchecked everything but a couple so that my geolocation for my beautiful widgets would work as well as facebook checkins although I'm not sure if maps has anything to do with this but i think it does.
