This is supposed to be Google's answer to Siri Apple's iPhone 4gs favorite.
TECHNOLOGY GIANT Google is apparently working on a Siri rival that is called Majel and could be released this year.
The voice recognition software has been named after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry who voiced the computer in Star Trek. There isn't much of 2011 left but it could be released before the year is up.

That is an extremely confusing article. For example:
I have had the chance to interact with the robot personally and it is honestly the most amazing thing that I have ever seen. I like to think of it like Stephen Hawking because it is extremely smart and you can interact with it naturally, but it is incapable of physically doing much.

That makes it sound like an actual physical entity rather than a software solution. I think what happened is Goog is working on two separate projects and this article combined them.

It was only a matter of time. Microsoft is also working on a siri rival
The only platform that wont have one will probably be blackberry haha. They wont have one for another 10 years where every other platform is doing holograms like in starwars

From a business standpoint It doesnt really matter logically whats so great about it. What matters is that it can be marketed and it sells. And it does.

Majhong
Other than the New York Times article, is there any reason to believe it would be out before the New Year? I would absolutely love an early build, but if it means taking another month to work the kinks out and release a solid product I would prefer that.
Also, Majel's voice would be great but I think I would choose HAL's if I had the option.
This wouldn't rival Siri, it would be significantly different in that it would integrate with our phones and its applications.
Google voice command is sufficient to me. I used Sirius and its the same but Sirius has a personality gimmick.
Edit. Sorry Siri ...autocorrect

I have to agree. I may not like Mr. Jobs very much but I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I hope things are as well as they can be for him in this dark time. I wish him all the best. Now that that is over. Down with icrap. Lol
Regardless of what one thinks about his products, the man was definitely a visionary and a marketing genius.
I personally think nothing will change with his absence. He will still be in the backgrounds doing quality control.
The guy is dying. That is the only reason he is leaving.
He is leaving at a good time, they are still on top and will only now start to falter. Apple will fall for the exact same reasons they failed in the 80's. It won't be a terminal fall but they will fall.
Even if I don't like him or Apple that much I still respect him and what he did. His health is worsening I believe. I saw him once in Palo Alto and man has he become thin. Good luck towards his health though.

I wouldn't pity him too much. He has the money for any and all treatments available. It's safe to say he has a panel of the best medical minds looking over his health.
Granted, it's a terrible way to go, but I'm sure he is in good hands due to his company's success.

Expected Step Down
Given his recent couple of years and the known health battle (without knowing the full extent) it is really no surprise he decided to step down. Will Apple hurt from his step down? Yes! Will Apple continue to fall? Quite possibly but only time will tell.
Regardless of previous posts about how much money he has, it is still a disease that I do not wish to see anyone with. While I did not agree with all of the Apple "mentality" I cannot find fault in Jobs ability to innovate and market the products. I can only imagine if Apple had kept him on from the beginning where Apple would be at now.
What do you mean regardless of previous posts? Nobody has wished this illness on him. All I said was that he is in good hands.

One thing about Steve Jobs is he paved a nice path for the future, I don't think we would be where we are today if it wasn't for the iPhone and iPad, but just like with any pioneer apples days are numbered..

Why do bad things *apple* happen to good people *Google*.
Apple is pretty stupid to sue Google for what they created and improved. Apple is just a monopolizing S.O.B.
Apple is just a rotten fruit that will decay soon, I hope Google does something about this.
This is nothing new. Although Apple has made strides in their field, they try to kill off any decent competition in their market. They'll patent **** that shouldn't be patented and sue based on that. For example, suing Samsung for using slide to unlock. They're pretty pathetic overall. Apple will never decay, which is both a bad and a good thing. They simply have incredible marketing and brand management. That's why they can release something small like video recording on a brand new piece of hardware, and people will upgrade to it without hesitation.

Nice to see someone gets it. Apple is the largest US company by market cap. Not only the largest but as of right now it's 50% larger than second place(Exxon-Mobile). It's not going anywhere for a very long time. While it's tactics may seem dirty to the public this stuff happens all the time in the business world. That's why we have a patent office in this country. You can hate apple all you want but it won't make them go away. Their business model is second to none and they will continue to grow.
Companies are doing underhanded things in order to obtain an advantage over their competition? Tha-tha-that's not fair! My trust in huge, faceless, multinational corporations is forever shaken!

While I am happy that someone is fighting back against Apple, and am defenately on Googles side on that one, I am asking myself where all of these trends are leading.
Instead of being concerned about User satisfaction and service, companies seem to tend more and more towards monopolizing and trying to get features from other devices and applications, instead of just leading onward and trying to get the best product.
I think a little competition goes a long way in increasing development, and history has shown in many cases that certain developments are being made by different parties independantly once their time has come.
In the end I believe that no matter who wins or loses the lawsits, if this trend goes on the way it does, the only one losing out will be the users.
I just see a much brighter future with companies supporting and encouraging eachother, instead of fighting.
After all, theres enough money, users and applications for everyone.

That is what everyone EXCEPT for Apple wanted. But, someone has to fight back. One of the main reasons Samsung lost the case is that they spent most of their time on defense. Apple has spent so much time playing offense, let's see how they fair when the tables are turned. And that article hardly goes into what the case is really for. Ya that's true! I honestly think that the reason why apple had that law suite was because they are scared of android and the popularity of it. Apple wants to be at the top of the market and bringing google down is in there agenda IMO. I just hope that this dosent turn into law suite after law suite, then it would make both companies look bad and nothing would get done. I think google should take on apple and do what they have to do and put an end to this mess
I'm definitely on Google side...

I've been following B2G or as it's now called FireFox OS, for several months. Definitely looks interesting, especially the concept and UI. Did some digging and haven't seen anything about it in our forums yet, so thought I'd get one started.
So far it looks like only a handful of phones have any form of a port of the current version, and I haven't really seen any fully working. Definitely not expecting someone to "jump on it". Mostly just curious s to what people think about it, as well as if they'd consider using or switching to it if it ever became available on our Skyrockets.
For those that don't know what it is, here are a few links:

Agreed, except I don't use Firefox at all. I'm 100% Opera. I'm just always intrigued by the possibility of a new mobile OS.
Any news for us yet? Will we get it? I hope so!!
Are there any phones that come with Firefox OS standard? I heard about this a while ago, but I don't remember it getting much traction.
Any update to anyone working on B2G? The last time we tried, we didn't have a stable ICS, so I'm thinking it might be easier this time around if it's tried again?
Sent from my 5" Retina XT iPhone running iOS 7
I think the main thing to consider is that the os is built using css and html5. It opens up new possibilities as far as hardware and software can communicate, this is particularly important for battery life as these concepts are developed and implemented into current devices. While I agree i don't use Firefox on android, much prefer dolphin, and I typically don't use Firefox on the pc, chrome kind of guy, that doesn't close me off from new developments. Nobody is asking you to use it, that's why manufacturers aren't shipping Firefox os phones.
On another note, I hard bricked my i9100 flashing b2g (pre Firefox os) because the Odin flash was taking 30+ minutes so I assumed something was wrong and yanked the usb cable during the repartition phase of the flash. Usb jig wouldn't work, never did send it for jtag. If I do however, I'll try it again hahaha :screwy:

Good point, however Rome wasn't built in a day, we're finally at the front lines of operating system development, which is a great step forward compared to the traditional model of "here's what we got for you" style of os development. So while you have a valid concern, it's welcomed and I'm confident it's noted somewhere. The key here is to remain consistent with constructive criticism, which if approached in the wrong way is seen as useless *****ing.

My only point is, while FirefoxOS is a very cool idea. as Google has seen with Android, security is a big concern as they rushed Wallet to the masses and then had to retract it on most carriers/devices. That has left a lasting impression that Google knows Search but not security.
I understand FirefoxOS is in it's infancy and that is why they need to address security now, not later or it will have a difficult time coming to the masses.
