Google patched the exploit that gingerbreak took advantage of back in May. The thunderbolt firmware was released long after so you can assume it was patched in it as well.

I just want to root my phone... no recovery. No bootloader no ROM. Just root to push stuff to the system/app partition...

Pretty much add whatever mods that don't require an unlocked bootloader.
Use most of the apps that requires root. Please don't try to flash any roms. Titanium backup will be good for backing up your apps
