Has anyone changed the DPI density? Standard seems to be 160.
Who knows what might be a better density?
Any expert's opinion most welcome!
I do not know much of these things and do not want to break the gadget.
Thanks!
S.
Some phones get well above that mark. I think the Nexus is over 300.
http://www.gsmarena.com is good for that kind of stuff.
The 7.0 Plus has a 1024x600 screen, 7 inches. That's 170 DPI (PPI). You can't change that.
How do we change it? I'm desperately looking for a way to make the screen better, thanks
BEST DAMN PHONE BECAUSE WE HAVE THE BEST DAMN DEVELOPERS!
@mike
You can change it with this app: LCD Density Changer.
When I use that the app it shows the default value of 160.
Going down to 150 or 140 gives you more contents on the screen, but I really do not know what a goog value might be. Any ideas?
Thanks!

thanks alot i really appreciate it and happy to be the first to thank you

nevermind i guess killall is the only one that works
I noticed some of my apps like IMDB weren't showing the tablet version on the tab but rather the phone version. So I kept dropping the dpi down and found that 133 will enable apps that have a tablet version to show properly on the tab. But doing that will do some funny things with the calendar and email apps. They won't scale properly. Not to bad though I've been able to live with it.
Thanks, so you scaled down to 133. I will try it out.
My "problem", the Kindle app shows lots of line-space, I do not like. But scaling down does not really solve the problem, there is more text on the page, but relatively to changing font size the space between the lines remains the same.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get more densely packed lines?
Thanks!
S.
I like 120, it seems to have fewest graphic glitches among apps i use, but may be too small for others (according to my math it actually puts more on the screen than the 10.1 has, at a much smaller space).
At 130 and below my contact app and log would crash also nba jam wouldn't work

Google's already indicated that tablets and smartphones won't be sharing the same Android build until Ice Cream Sandwich in Q4, though interestingly enough, it turns out that the tablet-friendly Honeycomb actually has Gingerbread's interface quietly tucked underneath. According to modder Graffix0214, all you need for making the jump is one simple tweak in a system file: assuming you already have root access, use your preferred method -- Pocketables recommends the LCDDensity for Root app -- to change the LCD density value to 170 or higher to emulate a smaller, denser display. After a reboot, you should then see some Gingerbread love as demoed by Graffix0214's video after the break; and likewise, set the value to 160 or lower to roll back. It sure is nice to have an option, eh?

I am curious if this works... if it does then maybe full screen apps and video players will not have the status bar.

I didnt see this until I arrived at work so I couldnt try it. Just wondering if anyone has. I saw that Zoom supports it.
I am sure that it will work- It is not really a surprise to me.
I remember messing around with the density setting and, even on my HD2, the icons and everything would completely change depending on what the density was set to.
That was a far back as 2.2.

ok heres is what im trying to do,,
i take a screen dump of my home screen then i add the orange divider lines to the png in paintshop pro, then i erase all the original home screen items so i am left with just the orange dividers in the correct positions and then simply use my new wallpaper as my home screen wallpaper and the orange dividers would simply be in the correct positions but heres the problem,,,
when i goto gallery and set the new black cnavas with orange dividers as wallpaper it first asks me to choose portrait or landscape so i choose portrait and then i select the size, obviously the whole image and apply to home screen, but the wallpaper is way too big than original size and hence all the dividers are throw out of place. --- reducing the border size of the wallpaper during selection seems to make the end wallpaper even bigger
note. when i open and view the wallpaper i made in image viewers / gallery it shows as the right size and you can see that the dividers are all where i put them and want them.......
this should be really basic i used to use this methond on my desktop back in win 98 win ME days
any info would be appreciated , feel free to rip it out of me i dont feel very clever

he was probably just spaming something to reach his 10 post count to spam in the dev section.
What device do you have?
From your screenshot it looks like the wallpaper gets strechted horizontally to cover all home screens to the left and right, to keep the ratio it is cut off at the top.
What launcher do you have?

oh look multi picture live wallpaper 8=======-,
So i been using my SG7+ since Dec 6th.. and couldnt be happier... i have had my share of the sleep of death issue and other hickups but i've been ussing the reccomended fixes...
for the sleep of death im using soflocker free and have not seen the issue ever since.
I did not like the jerkiness of the touchwiz launcher and switched to the ADWlauncher EX. that thing is fast... anyways, there were things i did not like for instance, i was not able to get full screen videos... untill i instaled honeybar (Yeii ) had to instal button saviour too.. its a must...
Next i hated that i had puny icons on the home screens and could not figure out how to change them to the high res version icons that touchwiz uses... bumping up the icon size does not change them, they only look larger but blurry...
then i wanted more screen real state so i installed lcd density and then a funny thing happened... when i lowered the density value to 120 it changed the icons to the Hires verison... so i kept playing and found that at 130 it looks fantastic...
it also gave me a new toolbat on top (status bar) that i did not have before...nothing to jump about but i guess it was not showing up because of the screen resolution limit.
im happy now...
peace.
Now just out of curiosity, since you said you adjusted the screen density, does the stock browser still work or does it crash? I've heard of it crashing before when you mess with the screen density?
And I agree the ADWlauncher EX is so much faster than the stock one! My only gripe is I had to lock it to landscape on account it stretches the heck out of stuff.
The stock browser works fine at 132...However i dont use it, i use dophin, ohh I changed the density to 132 and it made some widgets look a lot better...
Yeah i dont like how AWD streaches stuff either, but its a matter of finding the right grid size so that when it does you still have a good looking widget. Im using a 7X7 grid size and it looks great... ill see if i can post some screens.
The only gripe i have is that if the device reebots or i turn it off i have to do the density thing again. No biggie though.
Ok, I've found a few apps that wont work properly with the lower density value... like the Memo app in portrait... I do use this type of app so I changed to Slide notes... for now...
I dont know if there is a Density changer app that can change only for some apps and not all? i might be asking too much.. but oh well i cant have it all.
for now im using 133 for density value, and seems to be the best for me right now.
Guys if you are rooted you can hard code the density into the build.prop
For this I'd say use root explorer open it, navigate to the system folder, mount it a R/W. Then open your build.prop file in text editor.
Find this line, or add it which ever one.
ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx
Make the xxx what ever you want it to be. 132, 133, 120 or whatever. Then save and and reboot. Done. Now the density will stick everytime.
Thus eliminating the need for any sort of density changer app. Unless you just like changing it every time lol.

So you are saying using an app it just applies it and after reboot it goes back? Or is it more broad (across all apps) like gucabe is looking for?
Thanks a lot Antio, i'll give it a try tonite.
Good tip, I've been trying it out at higher levels in an attempt to get the proper notification bar back without usable results, but I never did try moving it down.
At 130; the button bar is a good size now, so that I'm not having to use honeybar (great app!) in a lot of the apps that I'm using. Also, now the notification area can display 3 icon notifications instead of the usual one in portrait (MAJOR BONUS) !!
Nothing abnormal encountered so far, fingers crossed.
I'm loving it
Thanks again!
UPDATE: After playing around now just two things I've noticed: it's actually able to fit four icons into the notification area, and also the "Stretch/Zoom to fill screen" toggle is a little bit not needed and is taking up one of those spots.
I cant never gwt button savior to work. The only button that works is the back button and nothing else.
For example, pressing. The Home button didn't do anything.
I am using Go Launcher, btw.
130 dpi & Contact
So far, I get problem with Contacts & Samsung keypad at 130dpi.
FYI
Well i have not made the ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx density change because im not all happy with some apps that default to a higher resolution screens. for instance the email App in portrait mode i cant see the left side of the page when writing an email. it's like it grew in canvas but more than what it needs to get viewed full screen on the SG7+
The solution is to rotate to landscape and you can see the whole page again... however i like typing in portrait...
Im still in test mode for the rest of the apps... i do preffer this resolution because of the added icons on the status bar... that rocks...
For a keyboard im using an ICS type of keyboard. i like the bigger keys and less keys on screen than the samsung one. works fine, however the previews are wonky while typing...
so again im still at 133 cause i find it to be better.
Messing with the DPI always causes issues somewhere. Its just a thing about finding out what you can, and cannot live with
Totally... I see a lot more advantages than disadvantages so ill stick with the 133dpi. I have added the thumb keyboard and this makes things easier to type in landscape mode, in this mode the samsung email and memo apps works fine.
Everything else is working fine.
120dpi is too tiny for my eyes... 134dpi and above doesnt change ADW launcher to tablet mode with HD icons... but 133 does... so its my personal sweetspot.
Thanks, and i guess ill be trying build.prop change next.
Well just to give you guys an update, i've opted out of the 133dpi... my eyes were hurting due to font being smaller... i know itryed other fonts out there and got better results but it was like trying to make everything bigger again??? then i saw in another thread that the SPB launcher was a good option as a launcher and decided to purchase it...
Im so pleased now that i have dropped the 133dpi resulution for the standard 160. This launcher is so gorgeous.. and has the hd icons in a reduced way that they look just right... My eyes are very happy now...
So now im running SPB 3d launcher + honeybar + button saviour. Every thing looks just fine now.

I'm changed from 160 to 133. I saved it and reboot, but then it stuck at Samsung logo. It doesnt go to the desktop. How do i fix this? Thanks in advance.
Stuck into boot logo? Reflash your ROM without wiping! If you don't know how to, and if you have no rom into your device just go into CWM advanced mount and storage and mount it as external storage. Put your rom into and flash it. You'll have everything back even your DPI

Was just messing around with my dad iphone 4 and noticed that in cydia there is a tweak that bring ipad like multitasking gestures in a blackberry-esq fashion to their phone. no i have looked all over! and unfortunately there is nothing similar for android, and unfortunately i am not THAT technically inclined as to port the application in order to get it working. I am, however, hoping that somebody with the skill and know-how is interested and would be willing to share their work if possible.
im not sure if the problem has been screen size or multitouch capabilities, or the notification bar swiping confusion, but apples ios5 has it figured out so im sure we can!
I need to get my dad off my back thinking Apple is better than Android because of they can do multitask gestures on their phone!

But GMD Gesture control isnt as good animated as Zephyr -.-
Zephyr looks much better ..
Anyone?

I wonder if android could gain iPad-like gestures for tablets?
That would be amazing.
devs
Cydia substrate is available for Android
Android. contact zephyr developer or can someone make an alternative.
Any android devs: This is my rough understanding of how it works
works. it takes a full screen of each app and output png, array of apps -> pngs, get array position based on current app, on detect two finger swipe take png of current app and begin animation, on the last frame switch to app.
Zephyr has been a deal breaker for some people. I also miss swipe peek history on safari and the menus. I reckon these use the same png hack
Hey guys, With a the help of few on-line classes, I have been able to develop an android app called BrainDrain. It is puzzle based.
I have released the app on the Google market place, yet there are certain things I could change to make the app better.
For instance, I haven't figured out how to stop the background music when the app is sent into the background. Also I don't want to have to go through the process of making thousands of Xml's to support screens with bigger sizes, is there any short cut or some kind of easier way?
If you could please test the app, and reply back with suggestions regarding these problems, and also suggest solutions for any other problems you come across? Thank you! .
"BrainDrain" is the app's name, please search for it on Google play, I'm a new user so I don't have the permission to post links!
I've never developed android apps, but you can use a mathematical model to map out the screen for devices of all sizes. Find the proportions of each object and run it through a function which will decide where it goes based on the dimensions of the screen.
Just a theory
Hey there,
I haven't tried your app yet, but I have to say: It looks quite impressive for a 14y old kid. When I was at your age, I knew a little bit of VBA (I was able to create some simple things like MsgBoxes and InputBoxes and stuff inside of excel sheets, but nothing really fancy). I was learning some C at that time too, but I just was not able to understand pointers and so my capabilities were quite limited.
Now seeing a 14y old toying around with Java is quite impressive :good:.
If you are having trouble with screen sizes then maybe you should use density independent pixels inside your layouts (dip).
Im not quite sure if thats correct, but I believe dip works the following way.
48dip -> 36px on ldpi screens -> 48px on mdpi screens -> 72px on hdpi screens -> 96px on xhdpi screens
Using these metrics will allow your content to be scaled according to the screens pixel density.
---------- Post added at 05:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:48 PM ----------
Oh and by the way (before I forget it)
I cannot really see the point of your app needing all this permissions (for a simple puzzler I mean).
I will have to try it out later when I get some time.
I am just learning how to code little things now with buttons to add and subtract numbers. According to the tutorials i am following you can use dp instead of px, perhaps it is a variant of dip like the post above me says. It is used for multiple screen sizes to show the same percent of the screen as far as I know.
Good work making an app at age 14. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks I will be able to make something as complex as this.

Hey there cmg5461, Thanks a lot!
For someone who hasn't developed android apps, that's quiet a witty answer. That would be possible, and that's how I did it. It's a custom setting that comes in eclipse. Thanks a lot!
Hey there Isam2k, Thanks a lot!
I've added advertisements, that's why those permissions are needed, I plan to make an ad free version of the app, maybe for 1$.
You have helped a lot, I tried what you said, It has worked, but I'm still facing a problem, all phone with screen sizes between 4-5 inches are having a problem. All the images get cluttered and overlap each other. Thanks a lot!
Hey there KeylanHalfdan! Thanks a lot!
I have used dp instead of pix, and I've messed around quiet a bit, and finally I managed to edit the xml files, But I'm facing another problem that I've mentioned above! Thanks a lot, You've helped quiet a bit!
Hmm, I am not sure about the large screen size issue. I am still early on in the coding process, but if I come across anything, I will let you know.
