Hello i am trying to root my desire s but i have some issues and i need your help
First of all i am Ubuntu Linux user (Ubuntu 11.04) . I followed this tutorial : http://myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-root-your-desire-easily-method-1 in order to root my desire s with Unrevoke but i get this message :
Devise "saga" is not supported at this time

and i cant proceed to root it ..
Here is a screenshot :
Can you help me please to root it ?
Thanks in advance
Of course, Unrevoked can not handle the DS yet.
1. use alpharevx and get s-off
2. use gingerbreak and install superuser + busybox to get root
3. flash recovery (just in case...)
as was said, you cant use Unrevoked, the tutorial is for "desire", the "desire s" is different device
saga is my rom ?
how can i see if my desire s is s-off or s-on ?
No, Saga is the codename of the device.
Start your DS with the "Volume down"-button pressed. The bootloader will tell you if you're s-on or s-off

What hboot version do you have?
If it is 0.98.0002, so you have to temp-root before S-OFF by Revolutionary.
How to temp-root (by using fre3vo): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488
No need to use SuperOneClick. I've used Revolutionary and it successed.
u can S-Off with Revolutionary and then Root with GingerBreak.
Cheers
yes if you have 0.98.0002 hboot just like mine you need fr3vo
I have 0.92.0002 !

Hi smartceleron,
this is a good guide:
[GUIDE] How to S-OFF your 1.47.x ROM with Revolutionary (without downgrading)
But please consider that the author of this method had hBoot 0.98.0002, unlike you.
With mimiron link I rooted my ds without problems.... I have hboot 0.98.0002 too

IMO the easiest and most reliable way is to install recovery and then just flash superuser with it.
www multiupload com/C90EI8MAOJ
extract the archive to your sd card. at first you should rename PG88IMG_4EXTRecovery_v2.1.3RC2 to PG88IMG and then go to bootloader. it will automaticly install the update. next you boot normally and delete the PG88IMG.zip file. Finally reboot your phone, go to the recovery and install su_2.3.6.3_efgh_signed zip.

Unlock boot loader via htcdev then Flash recovery then flash rom. Check the desire s help thread link in my sig, theres guides here on xda, just search.
First of all sorry for that question, but I can't find what I'm looking for. (I'm sure it is somewhere in this great forum)
I want to root my DS, but without changing the Rom at this time.
I need to edit some files which are write protected.
I found al lot of instructions to get the Phone S-OFF and to downgrade the bootloader, tp flash a custom ROM but no way to get root access without changing the ROM.
Do I need to install a pre rooted rom (2.10.401.8) or something? My DS is unbranded and because of warrenty issues, I don't want to use HTCDev to unlock it.
Thank you very much for your help
- if you can s-off, so you have to s-on again to keep warranty. And it has some risk to brick your phone
- unlock by htcdev is pretty safer then s-off
- if you want to s-off anyway, what is your hboot version?
- no need to install custom rom to gain root access. Just to s-off OR unlock hboot, install custom recovery then flash superuser to root

Thank you,for your answer. Hboot Version is 2.00.0002. I know, that I have to switch back to S-On for warrenty, but this is an other issue. And this part of job is quite clear. I use zergRush to get temp root and replace misc_version. Than I use Revolutionary to get S-off.
You wrote I have to install custom recovery than flash su to root. That is exactly the part of the job I don't know how to do.
Which custom recovery should I use, how do I flash it to get root access?

ok once you have s-off you are ready to install custom recovery and then root
- Custom recovery: can use 4EXT or CWM. Search in the forum for the installation files and how to flash it.
- Root: can use Superuser 3.1.3 or SuperSU 0.96. Search in the forum for the installation files, and boot into recovery to flash it.

Just follow each step of the guide and you will have root access to your phone. You will still be on hboot 2.00.002 and s-on.

Sorry but can you be more explainable? I have done the htcdev bootloader unlocking and wanted to install a custom (rom cm 10.1) then i flashed the new firmware 3.33 (universal) as guided by developer, When i try to flash Superuser-3.0.7 from cwm recovery the installation fails. What did i do wrong?I tried also KGS utility and when trying to root the app restarts the phone continuously failing to root.

Hi,
There is nothing to explain.
I gave you a link to a thread which has clear and explicit explanations of how to install a recovery and how to root your phone.

why you want to root ..if you are about to change the rom anyway ?
all custom roms comes pre-rooted
so you can skip the rooting part ..if you still want to try ..try my one click root from my soff guide ..link in my signature (just root tool is fine ..you can skip the soff part)

you have 2 options:
1)using htcdev method to unlock the bootloader and root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
after unlocking the bootloader flash this zip from recovery to root
http://download.chainfire.eu/333/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.34.zip
2)use juopunutbear method to S-OFF and root the device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661631
the difference between S-ON and S-OFF
with S-OFF you are fully unlocked(means that you can flash also firmwares, radios, rils which on S-ON you can't)
with S-ON you are limited only for flashing custom roms anf kernels

basically it has the same steps for S-OFF and unlock bootloader
so you can use that too
so i need to do is to first unlock bootloader(through Htcdev site).Flash any custom recovery and then root the device or I need to S-off the device too to get a root?
PS:
S-Off requires wire-trick which is like a operation of my device. :silly:

Follow this till you have a custom recovery with smartflash on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
Then copy any zip to sdcard, boot into recovery, flash.
If you get stuck in a boot loop, extract boot.img from your custom rom and use fastboot flash boot boot.img
I recommend that you do not soff or flash radios till you feel comfortable.
Happy to help.
