Is GSll model name to vague? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

One thing that bugs me, is that the sgh-i727 is not referred to as such, in too many places. Galaxy Sll is very often talking about too many different versions. Just wish Samsung would be more concerned about possible confusion..

Judging by the number of people that have messed up their phones, it looks to me that some are trying roms that say that they are for gs2 phones, and not realizing that there is more than one phone that has the gs2 designation. Anyway, that was the reason for my rookie post.
Sent from my SGH-I727R using XDA App

No each has a different model number. Also galaxy s2 skyrocket. Galaxy s2 epic 4g touch. Tmobile galsxy s2. Pretty obvious they are different. , and with 30 seconds of reading anyone would know that. Also the hardware differences are obvious. Anyone who wants to root and flash things should know this. Laziness is what it is. Not to vague.
---------- Post added at 08:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:54 AM ----------
And always the people who make this mistake are rookies. Who choose to not do the required research. Before attempting root/rom flash.

I'm agreeing with you. I am just thinking that not all rookies will get far enough?
besides, from samsung's point of view, I would have thought that they would have had something to gain, if only from a marketing angle?
I'm just happy that I wasn't one of those that tried rooting my sgh-i727r with the wrong method. And of course I had excellent guidance from very helpful and patient people like you Silver!!
Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk

I think they were trying to use the galaxy s2 name as much as possible. Becauae they know it sells. So they put out multiple devices and branded them gs2. Thinking people would buy them figuring they were all the same

That may be the case, but considering that there's a att gs2, a T-Mobile gs2 and a gs2 and are any of them the same.
I would have thought that gs2, gs3, and so on would have been more interesting from a marketing pov, and easier for consumers and particularly for rookie moders.

Actually it will run on both.
I am hoping someone will try the TM 989 root method. I am hopeful it will work but dont want to be the guinea pig.
Well I picked one up on an upgrade, I wanted the Vivid, but the AMOLED screens are just to nice, I have 30 days anyhow. According to the map I should be in LTE but near the edge, doesn't seem like I'm getting LTE though.
BTW is there a way to turn off LTE if you want?
I also notice that my old Captivate screen seems brighter though.
should i wait for the galaxy nexus hoping that it will come to at&t or should i just get the skyrocket?

Ditto. I went with an open mind to both, used both for a while, the Samsung screen wins hands down. You can say all you want about resolution or DPI Specs, but when you see the 2 phones side by side it is not even a comparison, let alone if you compare sunlight/brightness.
I believe there is a way to turn off LTE but I haven't figured it out yet. In some screenshots (posted somewhere on XDA) I saw a menu that had 3g/HSUPA/LTE and then an option for just 3g/HSUPA+ with no LTE. I can't find that menu though .

No one can answer that for you. How long are you willing to wait? The Nexus is an unknown for AT&T. It hasn't even been comfirmed that it IS coming, let alone a release date. Speculation says yes, there is a GSM model, but that doesn't mean it will come or when. I wasn't willing to wait. If it comes I will just sell my Skyrocket and buy the Nexus.

Absolutely 100% agree. I don't even like the higher resolution screen because the fonts and icons are smaller. Reminds me of my old 3.2" phone with more space for tiny icons. Of course my 64yr old eyes aren't as good as they used to be either.

ATT is not the same as Verizon LTE. The LTE does not eat the battery in my experience so far. I find it the same as my SG2 that I exchanged.
But I am sure when we get ROOT and some ROM's there will be a toggle.
If I had the extra Money I would have gotten this but still the HTC Vivid is nice. Not sure if the Samsung has built in FM Radio but the HTC Does. Regardless though both are nice I just couldn't afford the difference in price. That and I also remembered when I was looking at the devices that AMOLED Has a degradation Issue.

How do you like the Skyrocket as opposed to the SGSII?
I went to the ATT store today to check out the Vivid and Skyrocket (they don't have the SGSII anymore on display). The Vivid was big, heavy and bland colors to me. But the phone looks so nice.
The Skyrocket just looked big and the dev support is a question mark as it's veers off the path of the Internations SGSII.
I ended up jumping on a SGSII from BB for $99. And hopefully my Reward Zone points come through for the phone which would be enough for a $100 gift card

I like it quite a bit so far.
I did some benchmarks of my Galaxy S II (and saw some on the Skyrocket on YouTube, which pretty much sold me.) I like the larger screen and form factor. I don't notice any of the pixellation people were talking about, and the bigger screen for me means more readability. The Quadrant benchmarks were just odd when I started playing with them myself. They seemed to run from 2900 up to 3900, but the FPS was definitely lower than the OG while watching the tests run. I'm not into FPS style of gaming on a mobile phone personally - but the Need For Speed (crippleware) on the phone ran incredibly smoothly. The AnTuTu benchmark outperformed the (stock clock) OG, but the odd thing is it took a couple of warm-up trials before getting the best set of numbers. It will only be a matter of time until we have an overclock kernel.
Network speeds are much higher, even though I don't live in an LTE area. On the OG I was limited to 2.4 Mbps speeds - but in the exact same spot, I'm getting 5.6 Mbps speeds on the Skyrocket. Obviously if you live in an LTE area the difference is much higher, but the improved network boost here meant much more to me than a lower OpenGL framerate. This was testing with Entropy's 11/3 daily driver as well, which optimized the read buffers. The stock kernel for me was even slower.
I don't notice any of the screen stuttering that others have mentioned.
I consider it an upgrade personally.

Will this phone gain popularity among developers?

My dad (a fellow geek) saw that I was struggling with my Infuse because it has little official support from the big-name teams. Basically, we found that if I wanted to use MIUI or CM7, I would have to use a port that didn't really work that well, and I'm looking for the best MIUI experience possible.
He came home today and surprised me with a Skyrocket, but the more we read, the more we found out that this isn't a widely-supported phone either.
With that said, I live in a big city, so I'll probably get LTE eventually. Should I stick with this phone and hope that the MIUI team picks up the Skyrocket, or should I go trade it in for an AT&T SGS2?
The sgs2 has a huge development community but the skyrocket is a far better device especially with Lte. I decided to stay with the skyrocket and have noticed that we are picking up some steam it prob will never be as big as the sgs2 but i think it will be more than enough to satisfy any user

This phone has quickly gained developer support. Its still very new. And our dev community will only continue to grow. Theres alot of development going on check out the dev section. And dont worry we wil get ics. And we have a great bunch of guys on our forum that help eachother out. With out bad attitudes. Be happy you have the best device available in this country.
Also I think I know of somebody that might be working on a MIUI port for out lovely skyrocket, and he's no joke either. The skyrocket is gaining momentum quickly. I would not be worried. The device is still young. And its basically replaced the OG S2 on att. Your pops is a smart man.

Worry not fellow SGSII owner (I have the sprint flavored one). There's a bunch of reasons why development on this phone is going to, pun squarely intended, Skyrocket. Here's a couple:
1. the SGS II is THE best phone out period. If they'd given the Galaxy Nexus an Exynos processor, I couldn't say that but the Sprint, At&T and international SGS II have the Exynos which means our phones are the best hardware wise. Developers like sexy hardware. Don't need 8 mods to make it lag free, it's already lag free, so they can just have fun with it.
2. This particular SGS II is GSM, which is exactly like the international SGS II sans LTE. This means that porting stuff from their phone to this phone is going to be much more simple than, say, porting it to the Sprint one (which is cdma). You'll start seeing ports to this phone from the international version very soon.
So GSM + great hardware = good development eventually. It's very new though so be patient. The Epic Touch has been out two months and our development forums have just started to kick and show some promising work, so don't get discouraged!
I've never been impressed with either MIUI or CM7, personally. That is just my opinion and I have used them both.
I think this device has devs pushing forward on ROMs that aren't MIUI and CM7 maybe give them a shot you might be surprised.

There's also an international version of this phone too, right (SGS2 LTE)? It came out half a year or so after the OGSGS2.
So, maybe developer support will come pick up steam after a few more months?

Honestly, it's good as it is, because I don't want quanities of ROM's, I want quality ROM's.
That being said, with slayher working on CM9, and our device being literally identical to the T-Mobile SGS II except for the LTE radio (which adding our personal radio fixes), we shant not worry.
Plus, we have 2 devs on the horizon, and we have dev rotation, so devs will be getting our device soon.

I'd really recommend getting the Galaxy SII (not Skyrocket).
Just. Plain. Old. Sexy. Classy. SII.
The Skyrocket has a larger screen (4.5"), but from what I hear, it seems to have a few more issues than the SII original. Regardless, I still hear it's a great phone, but I think as far as getting future updates and Samsung support, original Galaxy SII is the safest bet.
If you really want a huge phone, look at the Galaxy Note.
And... Stay away from the Infuse. It's considered really old and outdated now. Yes, it's still a perfectly usable phone and it performs everyday tasks wonderfully. But when you can get the SII now for $100 or less, I just don't see why you'd want to lock into 2 years with a phone that is already a year old.
Plus, if you're a gamer, you definitely want to go with SII and not the Infuse. The RAM difference makes some games not be "compatible" with the Infuse.
To be honest, stay away from Samsung phones. I have two, a captivate and a infuse. I'm over Samsung because of the way they shelve their phones after a couple of months and all the problems in their software. I bought an Atrix 2 and its the best phone i have ever had. At first i wasnt sure about it because its a moto phone. Now that i have had it awhile i recommend this phone to anyone. Best battery life, 4 gb of space for apps and i got an over the air update on the second day of me having the phone. Its on the list for a ics update too. I have not had one single problem with this phone. Just my opinion but i would not get a samsung.

I guess I'm a Samsung fan boy. I have always had a Samsung, even before smart phones. I had a Captivate which I gave to my wife when I went with an Infuse. Really love the big screen and I would get a Note if I had the money.....Really doesn't matter if AT&t never pushes out any updates, because I am running CM7.
I recommend the Galaxy S II (i777). I like the Infuse and Skyrocket, but the i777 is perfect. I'd also recommend the Skyrocket over the Infuse, purely because of the RAM difference. The Infuse can't be my daily device, because I need more RAM. So, in my opinion . . .
Galaxy S II (i777) > Skyrocket > Infuse
Samsung may have its issues with software, but theres no denying that their products are well made. Almost everything in my house is made by Samsung. They never die.
That aside, what is your budget and requirements? If you have the money and like the size, get a Note. I've heard nothing but good things about it and developers here are already playing with it. There doesn't seem to be any love for the Skyrocket though. If you're strapped for cash, I'd definately look into the Infuse. The price fluctuates from $50 to free sometimes, so you might get a great deal on one. It's one of the best phones I've ever had. All of the software issues have already been resolved by the devs here. While it may be a little dated by 2012 standards, it handles almost everything I throw at it and you just can't brick it. That's something those ****ty HTCs and Motorolas can't claim.

Not bad
The infuse is a nice phone from what I have experienced. Doesn't look like it will get CM9 though so I would avoid it.
The screen is absolutely beautiful despite it's pitiful resolution. The colors are stunning and viewable from all angles making pictures better looking than what you took a picture of! Also sometimes I forget I am reading off of my phone when using google books and think it's my kindle.
RAM is pitiful (512?! Really Samsung??) but the phone operates smoothly despite.
Battery life is better than anything HTC has to offer.
I am personally looking for an Atrix 4g and it's laptop dock. Pretty sweet combo.
I got the skyrocket. Nice phone.

What are you looking to have done? Some themeing with some basic Mods? My S2 is down right now, Bricked it working on MIUI so I have some time on hands.. I will be working blind so you will have to test for me.. LMK
theres hardly any love here to begin with
@Racing19969 sure thing man, anything basic is welcome, as long as its better than stock..im sure that theres a lot of people out there with the Blaze, who just want "something" you know...
Oh and the reason why i switched from an S2 was because the small size of the Blaze is awesome and it gets the job done, packin the same proccessor as the S2. It was a matter of PREFERENCE, so don't tell me the S2 was the better phone..cuz even my baby niece knows that.
a++ dev poaching thread.

Id swap out vold for sure because the device emmc is different then ours as its smaller (according to what google tells me). otherwise flashing one of our roms could very well brick them.
I agree maybe a bounty of some kind for a Dev to do work. The real problem is its a similar device but has less internal memory, not as good of a front or rear camera, no nfc, smaller battery.. ect.. ect..
With a similar price tag i am not sure why youd buy the Blaze anyways..

so what your saying is, its pretty much a completely different device then lol.
Flashing a rom for our devices to this device will not yield good results im betting.

[Q] Upgrade to Galaxy S 4G from Photon 4G?

Should I upgrade? Not about cost or anything. Just want peoples opinions.
I think you should upgrade but not to this phone. Get a newer one. This is like 2 years old. Get a SGSII or a GNexus. This is a great phone but is old and development here is a bit slow. Not complaining about devs here, I'm grateful.
I agree about maybe trying for a gs2 instead. This phones actually just a little over a year, though in the smart phone world that's pretty aged.
Only reason I haven't got a gs2 is I don't want the larger size, but as much as I use my phone for games I'm thinking about going for it.
However I will say this is a nice phone, and if you don't care about having the latest or much dev support, it might be a good replacement. I don't know anything about the photon to really say.

If the larger screen is swaying you away, try the Galaxy s blaze 4g. Its a slightly updated version of our phone
Personally I'd wait for the galaxy s 3
