Mobilicity Nexus S - Just got it - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
So I just got my Nexus S not too while ago from mobilicity.
I heard the benefits of rooting it.
I have been reading around and is pretty confused.. there seems to be quit a bit of different versions floatinga round
I am on WCDMA network and want to root it into the new custom rom
Can someone point me to the right direction?
what is the best newbie friendly guide and rom right now?
man I never had trouble figuring out stuff like this but... dam I am really confused about rooting.

You mentioned WCDMA, so I'm assuming that you have a Sprint Nexus S 4G. If that is the case, head on over to the "Nexus S 4G Android Development" forum.

That is the part I am confused about
I have the Nexus s 9020T apparently
the one that mobilicity/T-mobile have specially

sweet.
so right now im using apps like Go Laucher Ex, Widget locker etc
I will still be able to use these right?
Also what about the one called cyanogen and another one that starts with M something
I ALWAYS hear about these two when people talk about custom ROMs

Pretty much every ROM you will see is based off CM7, which stands for CyanogenMod. It's a team that tweaks the custom ROMs enabling a lot more features in the phone that Google left out for the public.
The 'M', is probably MIUI? MIUI brings a graphical overhaul to the entire Android UI. Some people say that it makes it look a lot like the iPhone, which it kind of does. Can be fun to try if you get sick of the stock Android look and feel.
It's up to you to find the one you feel best with, almost all the last generation ROMs for Gingerbread are fast, stable and bring good battery life.
And yes, you'll still be able to use all those apps, and more.

MIUI is based on CyanogdenMod with some of their own features. The theming is pretty extensive and you can custimize nearly every aspect of it.
They are also releasing their Ice Cream Sandwhich ROM on friday which is awesome

all i can suggest is read, read and do more reading of each ROMs postings. Each ROM has their issues.... wether it be GPS, Wifi, No 4G connection or maybe just certain apps not working on it... so
Choose your ROM carefully depending on your needs.
Ask the specific question to the forum of whatever ROM your using since the developers or users can answer them faster or easier.
I would use the one I suggested first or maybe use on that your buddy is using so you can have someone to ask or call without waiting for someone on these forums.
Good luck

cheers
thanks for all the help guys
going to do it tonight after I get back
looking forward to it
Yea MIUI was the other one lol

You'll have to either wipe data and reflash the rom or just uninstall wallet.

Where should I start? Roms

Okay I have had my captivate for a few weeks and I'm just getting into the customizing part now. I downloaded the adw launcher ex from the marketplace earlier and it's pretty cool but it has me wondering what else I can do. I've herd people using different roms, the only problem is that I don't know where to find any of them at, or how to get it on my phone. Do I have to use so computer or can I download it directly from my phone? Also where is the best place to get them from. Basically looking for a 101 on roms. Thanks for the help.

Reading and doing some searches will lead you to the answers you seek. Start by checking out the stickies at the top of this, the Q&A and Development subforums. It isn't rocket science, but you should be familiar with the procedures and the possible consequences before you jump into flashing ROMs.
Yes for the love of all that is pure please do some research before you attempt anything. Read, Read, and read some more to make sure you have it down or we will see another "Oh No I have a brick and cant fix it" thread.
It is not that hard as long as you read the threads first. To many watch a video and do as it says without knowing what they are doing and that leads to a bricked device.

You should start out by killing a man with your bare hands and seeing if you enjoy the thrill. If not, then maybe rom flashing will be a little too intense for you. Best to stay away until you're ready.
Either that or you can just peruse the stickies and dev section for a while.. either option is good.
Once your rooted and have clockwork mod installed on your phone, roms are easy!
You just head on over to the dev section of the forums, pick a rom, and put the zip on your phone's storage. Then you boot into recovery mode, and use clockwork to flash the zip. Voilia your done.
It's just getting things setup before hand that is the important part, once you get that all done, you can flash until your hearts content.
The Captivate is my first smart phone. So I did my research before flashing. I have tried several roms currently on Apex 5.1. Everything you need to know is on XDA.
Just research and read all of a thread not just parts.
MobileTechVideos on youtube has amazing tutorials on how to do just about everything. His first three vids are a walkthrough in flashing. He is known as connexion2005 here on the forums.
my fav Rom ive used so far is the ULTIMATE ROM.
I'm using a 5xx version and they are on 8, but i love my V 5 so much I dont see a reason to leave it any time soon.
my vote is for firefly.
it offers over-the-air updates, which is kinda awesome.
My vote is for massive amounts of RESEARCH. That and the mobiletech videos.
I am using pheonix ultimate and it works great! Jq1 modem and latest suckerpunch work great for me. Beware....flashing is very addicting!!! Try what u like best, after the first flash the rest are downhill from there.

Which is the best current rom in your opinion?

I was tempted to sell off my one x and get a sg3, but I figured it's pointless since I am sure I will be getting one of the new nexus phones when they hit the market. (Hope Google doesn't drop the ball on these).
So since I am keeping this phone for awhile I am going to unlock the bootloader and put something better on it than stock sense.
I really like sense but I had to disable it because of the multitasking issue. Switched to nova launcher as well since none of the sense widgets worked after disabling the core components.
I am looking for a sense based rom with better multitasking, better battery life (mine isn't too bad right now), and the ability to remap the hot keys. I never use the recent button but I miss having a search button that isn't at different locations in every app.
What would be my best option?
Thanks.

Well... CleanROM 4.0 SE is what you want. :good:
Not sure you're allowed to make these sorts of threads though.
Not sure why there would be a rule against asking a question in the question and answer forum about which rom suits my needs the best. If there was such a rule then I apologize for breaking it , but such a rule would be pretty dumb if you ask me.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
What's the best is purely subjective and and in the past such threads have erupted in flamewars so the Mods don't allow them.
As you can tell from my post though I have am not looking for the best rom, I am looking for the rom that best suits my needs.
Just asking what I the best is of course going to bring a "What I use is the best because I use it" responses. What I wanted to know is if there is a rom that best suited the needs I described. I am sure there are other roms that can do other things in didn't list better

I've tried them all. Personally, CleanRom DEV and King Cobra's have been my favorites. They've been very reliable for me. Although atm I'm stripping down CleanRom 4.0 [I wouldn't call it clean, personally] and removing EVERYTHING I don't need to see how low/minimal I can get the rom in size :] I know it may not sound like a difference to you, but I don't need widgets or half of every thing that comes with it or any other rom. I want the slim-lined ROM with only core components I need. I don't need the wallpapers or quite a few of the APKs that come with it. Also, I don't need my apps zipaligned everytime I reboot. I don't want it. I don't need it. When I boot my phone on, I want it ready to go ASAP. <Haven't noticed a difference with zip on/off anyways>.
So... When I'm done stripping away CleanRom 4.0 SE, And have done a full setup [Busybox, Root, SD Maid, SD Booster, Cache Mate, and The V6 Supercharger scripts, I'll give you a heads up if all my cleaning [of a clean rom ;D] is worth it. Maybe I'll upload it, But I'd get the dev's permission first.
PS, Tryout CM9. When its fully up and running I'm sure it will be great. My HTC Aria went from stock to CM9, and it was blazing fast.

But that's not what your subject says
If people just read the the thread title without actually reading my post and then start a flame war over it chances are they were going to find another thread to start one anyway. People like that don't come to a forum to learn or help, they come to a forum to stir up trouble because they have nothing better to do with their life and that's just sad.
We should all be able to discuss any subject in a mature manner without it turning into a childish argument.
Anyway, thank you for to the people that replied with answers. I appreciate it.

CleanROM is a good "off-the-shelf" solution. It has bloatware removed, and some customization - including multitasking improvemets. And it still has Sense, which is nice for those who like it. Give it a try!
If you want to find a ROM that suits your needs the best way to go about it is to take the time to actually read the threads in development for each particular ROM.

A better thread title would help, such as "Suggest a ROM for my needs" or even "What is your favorite ROM". There is no "best" ROM, and suggesting so is considered by many here (including myself) to be insulting to the devs that work so hard giving us these ROMs.

Very Disappointed in Cyaonogenmod

Been using Cyanogenmod for a week now. Very dissapointed in the fact that my bluetooth audio sounds like AM radio. Also I get extremely bad echo during calls. Tried CM10 and 10.1. Both have the bluetooh issues.
Sure its a little bit faster. But, I rooted and installed a custom rom in hopes to IMPROVE me phone experience and I got just to opposite.
I'm considering going back to the rooted stock rom but I can't seem to find the link to the original latest verizon rooted rom. I didn't make a backup. Can anybody help me locating it?
On another note, I'm willing to try another custom rom if someone can vouch for it and ensure that there are no major bugs like CM10.
Should've bought an iPhone o_o but really the developers spend there personal time making these roms not for money but for us and themselves so if you're "disappointed" in them then make your own or try others, read threads and find out bugs before you flash.

Don't use bluetooth so can really comment about it, however there are some great touchwiz roms in the Android Development section I stay away from the Original Android Development just because I have found too many issues.
As for some suggestions Synergy is pretty cutting edge though you may have to play with voltages if you install ziggy's kernal. Clean rom is another nice option. Hyperdrive and Delta have also run solid for me. Currently running Beans 12 and it is almost everything I can ask for, if a 5x6 launcher were included it would be perfection for me.
I would say to install twrp as your recovery, if you haven't done so, and install a rom and run it for a few days and see how it handles. Make a backup, twrp lets you rename them so you can easily restore to your favorite rom, and install something else for a few days. Also you may want to try different kernels as well, KT runs good for me but there are many more to choose from.
Finally just remember that each user runs different apps and has different needs and that while we all hqve the same phone minor variatikns n hardaware and just the way the rom flashes can have different effects such as bluetooth audio interferance or poor battery life or app abc will not work for one person but another has none of tjese problems.
Good luck and just remember that the perfect rom is out there waiting for you. You just need to flash like a madman until you find it.
Check out mastamoon's CM 10.1 rom. His latest 2-28 rom is near perfect. BT audio sounds great, signal handoff isn't as good as TW, but it's good enough as a daily driver. I've had little problems with it, to the point i don't even notice it. Try that and your mind will change.

A. If you have issues with a ROM either post in the ROMs thread or in the Q&A section. Not start a thread in General bashing a ROM developers spent countless hours on. Just a respect thing.
B. Go to original development look for yourself, see what has features you like.
At this point, my phone is just one big tweak.
I'm sorry you're getting echo in calls and problems with BT. Would probably be solvable if you had asked since echo has been fixed for a long time.

I think its funny, this guy has a valid complaint about how CM 10 is making his Bluetooth sound bad, and weather it's true or not, members just bash the $hit out of him, lol.
To the OP, if you don't like the ROM or something is glitchy, I've done two things in the past when I've experienced this.
1. make a backup (I use my backup root), and then boot into recovery, wipe (cache, davlik, system, and Format), then reflash your ROM.. OR
2. Find a new ROM and try that out. Currently I'm running the latest CleanRom with Morphology 1.5, and Ac!d audio..I have no issues with sound or bluetooth.
I hope that helps man, good luck and remember. Keep Calm and Flash Roms.
There are at least two threads where a total noob can seek help to fix the two issues he has, and one more where he can read how to fix his issues. Perhaps there are better ways to address his concerns?

To the OP I say I hope you find a solution to your problem. Keep flashing and find what you need brother. To everyone else I am pretty new to this particular medium (xda forums) but looking at almost every topic I've seen I gather one very singular feeling. Please xda take away the "post new topic" option. Its pretty obvious that every single question that can possibly be asked has already been answered. So why ask any question. They are apparently evil and the world wide web has only limited space so lets please not clog it by asking a question twice *gasp*. There is a section for every device and build for developers only that by all means should be kept as streamlined and clutter free as possible but in general forum questions should not be so vehemently discouraged.

I am also disappointed in the CM rom's performance...but I think the blame (for my issues, at least) resides totally with Samsung.
The rom itself works great, but when you're in the middle of a town and everyone else in the restaurant has 4g and you've only got 1x (not even 3g)...well...that's an issue.
Wish they would release the friggin RIL so I could just stick with a 4.2 rom. Grrrr!

I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not. I recently had to return my phone to stock because my phone needed to be re provisioned to activate it again. This happens when you flash multiple roms apparently. I got my phone working and commenced to do everything to flash back to CM 10.1. I noticed I can make calls however, my 3g data will not come up. So, I have flashed back to stock and everything works fine. Anyone know of a tip that might resolve this issue. I was using the nightly from yesterday.

Me too, my only real issues with CM (or any non-TW ROM) stem from the fact that the radio interface has not been released by Samsung and therefore the reverse-engineered AOSP RIL will probably never be as good as stock. It's not limited to signal strength issues, you also can't take full advantage of the phone's World Phone capabilities with a non-Touchwiz ROM. Unfortunately for me, that's a deal-breaker, my phone needs to work as a phone first and foremost and if Touchwiz ROMs have a better and more functional radio, I have to stick with that.
I have been using the latest nightlies of Cm and they have been running great. phone works great except in some areas where I can't get a signal with TW roms either.
I had CM running on my Dinc2. Since getting the S3, I've been running CleanROM with mods. (when I was on CR5.6 I was using KindaCrap Mods and now that I'm on CR 6.0 I"m using Andy Bones' AOSP Theme, which gives it a lot of the feel of CM).

ROM thread? You mean the section with all the ROMS in it that has Stars next to the thread title? I've been in that thread and it doesn't seem like a well organized place to find something stable. The information is there, but just not well organized.
You won't know if the Rom works for your phone until you tried them. If you can't find a Rom that works well on your phone then I suggest going back to stock. The reason I am saying this is because not everyone here have the same experience with the same Rom.

Id like to help you find a ROM that you like. This phone is so much better running it the way you'd like it to. Are you trying to run a stock based TouchWiz ROM or AOSP? This is very important as not many AOSP ROMs are completely stable. TouchWiz stock based ROMs however are very stable. I would like to suggest my ROM made off of the official ROM for our phones. It offers many very nice features which you can either choose or not choose to use with the Aroma installer. It's the forth release of the ROM so all the bugs have been fixed and the ROM is fast and stable. Please check out the thread to the ROM and read through it and see if you fund it worth trying. The thread offers a lot of good information about exactly what you will find in the ROM.

Thanks man, you are so kind! The only ROM i have ever used is Synergyrom and the last few updates I did with Synergyrom had some bugs in it. I haven't tried the very last patch though. One update gave my bluetooth phone static. This last ROM i am using from Synergy makes Dolphin crash but I'm not sure if it's due to the ROM. My google maps also isn't working either. It works but it only tells me to turn left or right but never gives me the name of the street that I want to turn on.
Anyway, all I really need from the ROM is something that allows Nova Launcher to work, Bluetooth without static, Dolphin without crashing, Google Maps to work by giving me streets names when it talks to me, and the ability to use Amazon Video on Demand. The Amazon thing might be a long shot though but that would be really awesome! I don't play any games on my phone, mainly use it for music and watching movies from youtube or whatever I download. Amazon on demand would be great though!
Edit: One more thing I forgot to add! They keyboard needs to be 1 handed operational. I forgot what it's called but I currently have it on my phone, the keyboard is smaller and moved more to the right so I can operate it with one hand. I also don't know what AOSP is so I really don't need that.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check them out.

[Q] What ROM would you recomend?

Up until switching to Verizon recently I have only ever used Nexus Devices. I like the Stock Android that comes with a Nexus Device. Now I have an SCH-i535 Galaxy S3 and I hate it. I have rooted and installed custom bootloaders on this, I even tried using the root66 ROM for a while until VZW pushed an update that killed it, since then I have been completely stock.
I have used an AOSP ROM on my wifes Inspire 4G for a while and it wasn't very stable, kinda turned me off on custom ROMs.
Now I think I am ready to delve into custom ROMs again with my S3 and want some recommendations from the community on what would give me the closest experience to a the stock Nexus version of Android on my S3. It would also be awesome if I could get Google Wallet working on it too but that is not a requirement.
Thanks in advance and try not to flame me too hard as this is my first post and I really am too lazy to read every post on every ROM to find what I'm looking for.

if youre too lazy, youre going to run into issues.
the best thing you can do is read and try roms. wallet will work with any rom as far as i know. theres a thread in the themes and apps section you should look at.
youre thread will most likely be closed like others do of this nature.
every device runs differently so your results will vary.
some roms have smaller faetures that cause people to stay. theyre all kinda unique.
if you like youre stock features checkout touchwiz roms. if you want something closer to nexus check out the AOSP roms.
if you like stock and the look of AOSP checkout the touchwiz ones that have AOSP themes.
sorry for the vague answer, but figured id give some help before the thread is closed.
good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I see that someone posted pretty much the same question as I did . I think I'll watch that thread also to see what comes up.
