[Q] Battery Issue - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my Nexus S last month...so far using it..no issues..except the battery..Running on Android Stock v2.3.6
the other was running papago - the phone is overheated after using it for approximately 1 hours.. temperature at 50 Celcius.
When i turn it off. it back to normal.
This morning the phone was fully charged - AT 93 %
i was using WAZE application with GPS and DAta enabled (2G) - Approximately 40 minutes
When i reach my office the battery is at 73 %..
Is it a normal thing or something wrong with my battery?
Pls advice. Thanks

My battery is encouting with the same problem.
what's wrong with my android OS?that it is always cost the largest amount of
the battery.
is it needed be rooted?

this is strenge
when you use your phone with high usage in short time , battery will be hot , but not that hot , i have been seeing battery temperature up to about 37 °C , never seen up to 50 ...
you said 93% ---> 40 minutes GPS + 2G ---> down to 73%
yes , this is very normal , specially when your GPS is on.
GPS and 3G are battery killer.
my phone can only last about 1 and half hour for GPS , about 2 hours for 3G with 95% charged battery.
------------
i don't think it is related with ROOT ....

Use trinity teuv kernel, gave me upwards of 30 hours with moderate use

well, i guess that kinda depends on how define "moderate use'

[i9003] Battery life and charge time

Hi all,
Whats the battery life you people are getting? and also the charge time taken for a full charge. Lets dedicate this thread for posting details about battery life.
Mine is below,
Battery Life : 1 to 1.2 days.
With live widgets and gtalk : less than 22 hrs.
Avg charge time : 4 hours(Too lond )
I got 14 hours with 4hours of wifi...anyway to increase battery life...even when its idle it dropped from 100 to 80...that is without use,is it normal?
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA App
Yes its normal & that happens bcoz your data connection remains on which eats battery, if you want to increase battery life you can use free APNdroid widget with this you can switch ON/Off the data connection. Else use juice defender or tasker they both can save battery life to quite an extent. Both have trial version.
In the night I switch to airplane mode & keep my data connection off hence I get 1.5 day of battery usage sometimes even more, if I don't surf the web then I get full 2 days of battery usage.
Charge time 4hours but I have heard that HTC charger can charge faster & gives longer battery life due to current difference. I will try this weekend borrowing it from a friend.
I think I am the first one to Vote. My usage is mainly calls. 1-2 hours of calling. 1 hour at XDA using XDA application with 3g on. 1-2 hours of playing around with the Phone and gallery etc. But with heavy usage, battery life is just enough to come back home and charge after 8 PM. My battery goes down by 3-4% after over night standby not 20% as mentioned in the above post.

This is more dependent on the tower distance near your home & its data signal strength, there are people for whom night time usage is only 1-2% ideal.
Do you feel if i flash a different firmware i would get a better battery life...

Usage without much gprs usage i get around 2 days.
Usage with gprs usage of about 3o mins surfing, email sync, lil chat & fb i barely get thru the day and am at arnd 15-30% by 7pm.
I guess mine's pretty bad eh ?
Overnight i tend to lose about 7%

switch in the night to airplane mode & see how much drain happens.
Well, I have a moderate usage of almost all features (call, mail, camera, music, net radio, browsing, etc.) and it lasts for about 1.5 days.
Yea, full charge time is pretty long if you do not switch off your phone while charging.
Battery life in the long run depends if you have maintained a few golden tips for new batteries:
After unboxing, fully charge the battery in switched off condition. For the first 10-15 charge-discharge cycles, let the battery fully drain and the phone to automatically shut off. Then charge fully and switch on the phone. Avoid charging while phone is on or has quite a bit of charge.
I had a Nokia N91 and following above steps, the battery gave promising backup even after 4 years! Sadly, I lost the phone in Jan this year and bought the i9003.
DEAD CHARGER
Recently my i9003 bundled charger got fked up somehow... it just stopped charging the phone; had a few languishing days charging off the data cable off my laptop. Took to nearest service centre with a photocopy of the bill and it was instantly changed with a similar 700MA charger but of different shape.
Oh, I seemed to find a friend who is the tech there and jumped the long queue! LOL
I get about 24-28 hours battery life. I calibrated my battery after flashing to XXKB3 and I think that brought the best out of the battery. Running SuperPower and I mainly use Wi-fi while surfing.

how long is ur charge time with 700mA Charger?
I agree with the OP about seriously long time to charge! I had an X10 earlier and that used to fully charge in 2.5 hrs, but this takes really long. To just reach 100 from 90 it takes like about an hour!
well mine since i flashed 2.3.4 only stays for 18 hrs max with less than average usage only talk in for 1 hrs 2g maybe and browse use ebook for 1 hr maybe that is all when i used froyo 2.2.1 it used to stay for 1.5 day
any ideas of wht i can do i did battery calibration and am using xda super power
on xxkph i was getting about 15hrs with amits oc 1.1
after flashing xxkpm i seem to be blown away
im using xxkpm and cf root by skin and im getting 1 day 5 hrs with heavy usage and 2 days 4 hrs on moderate usage

BATTERY Performance / Expectations

I'm just wondering if some other Sensation owners can chime in with their battery stats. I've had the phone for a couple of days now, and with a few battery cycles behind me, I'm still concerned. I do understand the "new toy factor" of using a new gadget much more frequently than normal, but what specifically concerns me is the amount of juice the display is using. With push email on, twitter sync on, auto brightness on, and mostly indoor use, I am finding that I can't get more than 3 hours of Display On time. At the moment I have the following stats:
17% Battery Remaining
9h 5m 9s on battery
Display: 80% (Time on 2h 7m 31s)
Cell standby: 8%
Phone idle: 5%
Wi-Fi: 5%
Maps: 2%
Usage has consisted of some light web browsing, just a few minutes of phone calls, lots of texting / email, and general playing. At the moment, I can barely make it to the afternoon, let alone a full day. Is this comparable to what most of you are seeing or do I have a bad battery? Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S I was hoping for better performance but so far this is far worse ( I used to get 5+ hours of Display On time )..
Thx..
45% remaining
On battery 6 hours
Display on 2hr 10min
Display 85%
WiFi 6%
Cell standby 6%
Phone idle 3%
Comparable to my DHD I'd say, possibly a bit better. Custom roms did improve that though
Funny thing is my girlfriends galaxy s has shocking battery drain, particularly in standby. She's currently on Darkys ROM and I've given up trying to figure why she can never last a day with her phone.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
Coming from a G2 and this phone seems to be much worse. At work I would make it through the afternoon with very minimal usage mostly idle and checking my email on it 8-10 times and have 80%+ left over when I left the office after 9 hours off the charger. Even mostly idle I'm at 50-60% during the same timespan with a 20% bigger battery. Yesterday I was @ 95% and used the GPS for 30 minutes and it dropped the battery down to 60% in that small time period.
My batyery sucks big time... I trained it once - didnt do anything. Still get about 8 hrs between 7am and 8pm. Light to moderate usage :-(
Maybe i should look into finding a bigger battery
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
I get about 14-17 hours, depending on usage. I'll post my stats later today as I'm at 100% right now.
I would disable htc hub from syncing. It syncs every few minutes and drains the hell out of the battery. I also disable always on mobile data and that helps save the battery when my phone is idle but things that you auto sync might have problems. My .02.

This is pretty much my usage.
I can get over 24 hours pretty easily if i'm only using it for a phone call here or there. This is with Wifi turned on(and wifi calling on), auto-brightness, and auto-synching set to different intervals. Exchange email is set to every 15 mins, google set to push, FB is manual, weather is set to once a day.
If I'm using it pretty heavy, browsing the web, playing a game or two(peggle & plants vs zombies), I'll get typically around 12-14 hours.
For the first few days the battery life in my brand new Sensation sucked too. I was getting maybe 8-9 hours of moderate usage before having to plug it in to recharge.
On Friday night (June 24th), I did a full factory reset through the bootloader, installed Juice Defender and set it on Aggressive setting, and charged it overnight for about 8 hours while the phone was turned off. Yesterday (Saturday, June 25th) after over 18 hours of moderate use, which included many phone calls, emails, some texting, browsing, playing with the phone, and even a little bit of Stupid Zombies, the battery was still at 42%!!!
I charged it overnight again for 8 hours. So far today, after 3.5 hours of HEAVY usage, the battery is at 93%. I am beginning to like this a lot!
Email auto-sync, BT on at all times, some internet radio streaming today and still at 91%. It's been off the charge for 3 hours now. I think that's pretty good compared to my HD2.
I have been very happy with the battery life so far, its better than the battery life was on the MyTouch 4G I had. Can go a whole day no problem, MyTouch 4G couldn't make it a day....
To all you guys that are getting phenomenal battery life, could you check your battery stats and tell us your display usage?
Thx
I will post battery stats later today but battery life has not been as good as I hoped. Compared to the G2x I'm getting worse battery life. Then again, it's too to compare a device that is running a custom rom versus stock.

Yup. thats what i read... maybe i should tell you what I did when I got the HTC Ssensation...
I used it and set it up on that batt level that came out of the box... till it switched off... kept if off and charged it the whole night.. about 7 hours.. unplugged.. turned the phone back on.. used it again the whole day and brought the battery level to about 19%.. turned it off.. charged it again full for about 7 hours... and now i am using it as normal!!
EDIT::: hahahahahhahahahahahaha.. no wonder... I am sorry.. its a typo.. 2 hour and 11 Mins.. well now 18 mins!!!
Still quite decent I think.. with the usage!!!
My battery sucked too but its doing much better (ibwas not worried because the same happened to my nexus one). Always moderatevuse and I get about 16 hours of use and still have about 40% left.
I have auto sync on, wifi off, screen brightness on about 60%.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
This is probably the longest lasting device I've used in a while. My G2X would get me about 11 hours with moderate use but my Sensation will last close to 16 hours with moderate use.
The only thing I have syncing is my Gmail account and calendar. I turned off everything else including weather. I also never keep my display set to automatic since that's just another piece of hardware that constantly has to work. Unless I'm in direct sunlight, my display stays at 50%.

Bad battery life

Brightness 25 percent with wifi on and battery drain 1 percent every 5 minutes
The battery was 92 percent at 9 am. Now it's 9:30 am and it's 82 percent
Also yesterday when I went to sleep at 12 pm it was 94 percent until 9 am this morning it was 92 percent and yesterday I put it in power saving mode wifi GPS Bluetooth everything off
I think I got a defective item

maybe, but maybe it's just an app that is behaving badly, do a factory wipe and do not install third party apps, then test again
i didn't do a factory reset, i don't know should i? it's new, and i didn't really follow the user manual: yesterday i got it and put it on charge for 8 hours, but while it's charging i updated the firmware, and downloaded a lot of apps (about 20 apps, no heave games), also because i was so excited so i used it every 5 - 10 minutes every hour while it was charging. basically i didn't leave it charge without using like the manual says "charge at least 8 hours BEFORE FIRST USE"
but i don't think that could make the battery goes this bad. i just ran riptide gp with brightness about 35%, after 2 minutes of playing the game the battery went down 2%, before i played the game i used asus task widget to kill all tasks, also wifi, bluetooth, gps was off, was in balanced mode.
how should i test my battery? i only charged it once, when i contacted asus about first charge question he told me that after first charge use it until it's almost dead and then charge again (like a full charge cycle or something but i don't know what that means). i think i'll contact him again and talk about this battery issues.and everything looks good, apps and games run quickly, riptide runs without lags and water effects look awesome, i don't want to return it, it's a pain, i got it from amazon and i don't even know how to ship the package back to amazon lol (i never shopped online).

Your battery was already a little charged, right? Like 20-30 percent. So the first charge/use was already performed. I usually don't leave the battery that long to charge when I have a new device. Only until 100% then I disconnect it and use it.

I think that the battery reporting lagged a bit, it had drained more than 2% through the night. Also batteries sometime take a bit to set, I recommend draining it to less than 10% once a month and fully charging without interruptions. Disable all bloarware you don't use, get auto airplane mode and autostarts. Also getting the molded buildprop from seanzcream is supposed to help a bit.

no the battery was empty, it had no power i could not even power it on, at first i thought it was dead on arrival, then i made a thread in this forum and someone told me to charge it, after charging it for 2 hours i was able to turn it on, when i asked asus do i really need to charge for 8 hours the first time like the manual says and they said:
It is recommended that you give it at least an 8 hour charge. I mean, if you don't, and charge it only 5 or 6 hours, by no means will it kill the tablet. The point of the charge is to condition the battery, which has been sitting idle for who knows how long. Letting it charge for 8 hours before putting a load on it will extend it's life and lower the chances of you getting a battery that won't hold a charge only a few days in.
When you unbox it, just plug it in and let it charge without powering it up. You can turn it on, it won't hurt it, but try not to do anything on it as it charges the first 8 hours.

that's why i let it charge for 8 hours
The first 5-10 charges are a pain... then it settles down. Ihavent much used it on stock rom but termleechs 4.0.4 aokp so no bloat on board. Just let it load a cpl of times it should settle in after that.

Cm10 standby battery?

Hi, I'm running cm10. I charged up my phone to 100% and left it on for 6 and a half hours with only cellular on, no data. I ended up with 75%. Is this good? Wakelock detector only shows stats from 8 minutes ago cause I restarted my phone :/. Besides that I can only trust that the graph in the settings app is correct with the awake time.
Here's the picture: http://imgur.com/GHD7Czy
Also, I went from 74 to 64 doing some googling over 3g within a few minutes. So do you think this is bad?
Cellular standby was also taking a lot of power. I didn't have such a good signal too.

Draining at 6% per hour is not good & unusual. But for Android 5.0.2, it seems about right, unfortunately. My N5 drained at that rate before the 5.1 update.
On my S4 with its 2-yr old battery, I drain at 3 to 3.5% per hour on idle with both WiFi & LTE turned off.
On my N5 with a new battery & 5.1, I idle drain at 0.7 to 1.5% per hour.
I'll add my battery drain rate once I get my S6E tomorrow.
Sent from my SPH-L720
This is mine on light usage. I noticed etter after a factory reset. Heavy usage is between 6 and 8 depending on wifi
I'm debating going to get one of these... My Note 2 keeps not charging and the stock battery died in 1:10 (from 50% to 1%) during a run yesterday. I was using spotify and mapmyrun.
Today is my first day after first full charge and my battery drains at ~3.5% hour, per GSAM.
I have screen brightness at little bit below the half-way mark with Auto Brightness checked.
I disconnected my phone at 6 AM and right now, it has been on 16 hrs 30 mins. I have gotten 2 hrs 30 mins SOT with 45% left.
Wifi active for 6 hrs, LTE for about 1 hr.
Screen has used 52% of my battery, Wifi 15% (5.0.2 shortcoming), Bluetooth (2%), Held Awake (0%), Phone (0%), Phone Radio (0%), App Usage (31%).
So far, the S6E is outperforming my Nexus 5 on 5.1 with a brand-new battery I swapped in on 4/1/2015.
Happy with the S6E's battery life, especially considering it's only 2600mah.
a little over 6hrs and it went from 100% to 14%. Granted 56%-23% were on a 1:43 run using Bluetooth headphones + spotify and mapmyrun mapping my way. Oddly, when I look at the battery usage, OneDrive is at 18%!
18 hrs & 37 mins off the charger with 4 hrs 8 mins of SOT. 17% battery left. I'm very happy with this. Update to 5.1 should improve it a lot more as it did on my Nexus 5.
Android System & Kernel battery usage is pretty decent. Those two on my N5 on 5.1 drains way more battery than it does on my S6 Edge.
When I'm not actively using my phone, the idle battery drain rate is pretty good - 1.9%/hour (similar to my N5, with the N5 being a bit better).
13 hrs & 9 mins off the charger with 2 hrs 20 mins SOT --> 52% battery left.
All this is without Root and my usual battery-saving Root programs.
Once 5.1 rolls out and if I decide to Root the phone and add battery-saving Root apps, I'm expecting to achieve 6-7 hrs SOT.

Ive noticed that turning off location and disabling google now has helped my battery life a lot.
I love this phone, but the battery life is the one terrible thing. 7-10 hours seems to be the max. I might have to return it and suffer the summer until the note 5.
i'm surprised to hear about all the negative battery life issues on this phone. on my GS3, i'd lose 3-4% battery just driving to work - now I get there and still have 100%. maybe i'm just not as heavy a user, but the other day my phone was off the charger for 16 hours and I still had 43% when I got home - and that included using Google Maps for 20 minutes, texting throughout the day, and using a bunch of apps. when idle, I generally only get 1% battery drain. my only complaint about the phone is some of the UI that I can't customize, but it's only a matter of time before custom ROMs are available...
I lose 10% or more battery on the phone regardless if I'm using it or it is sitting with the screen off. When I drive the 45 minutes to work, the battery is at 89%-93%.
A 1hr run with it on my arm playing spotify/mapmyrun seems to use about 26%.
Basically, I'm always worried now about the battery dying when I'm using it.
at the end of next month, I have a 14hr+ a day for 4 days music festival where I can only charge it at night. 7-10hr battery isn't going to work for me. It seems bizarre to me that they made the best phone ever, but skimped on the battery.
drive to work today with the phone just sitting beside me, 100% to 86%.

Is your location on? I had to disable google now. Turned off nfc, advanced wifi scanning.
my battery sucks too :/
i live by the charger even more
with all the same activities that got 7-10 hours on my Edge, the Note 4 is getting 14-24hrs.
Battery is beyond horrible!
Wifi is off
NFC is off
What else can I turn off? I can't even get half day out of this POS.

I think you actually want Wi-Fi to be on. I find that on any android device I burn more battery when using cellular networks.
