[Q] When to upgrade..... gimme your 2 cents. - HTC Inspire 4G

OK, I just got eligible for an upgrade, and was about to pull the trigger on a Galaxy S2 when I picked up a Galaxy 8.9 Tab to play with. Long story short, I spent my upgrade money on it (and a sexy piece of hardware it is, IMO). So now I'm thinking about when to upgrade. I got to thinking about the fact that my Inspire does everything I want it to do right now (MIUI is sweet!). I'll have another upgrade coming in a couple of months (I steal my sons upgrades on my family plan and give him my hand me downs), so I have plenty of options. I also think that an upgrade unused is a waste of potential money.
So what's around the corner? Think the next best thing is coming out? I could just get the S2, keep the Inspire, and sell the new phone. I'm actually looking at the Skyrocket now, I like the idea of a little bigger screen, but 4.5" is about as big as I would go. Are there any other large screen phones on the horizon that I should be thinking about?

Check out the galaxy note!! One big ass phone/mini tablet.... ur choice!

Keep an eye out for the HTC Elite/Congressional. Should be announced at Mobile World Congress the end of next month, to be released this Spring. That is the one I'm looking for. No specs have been leaked on it, just the internal/rumored names and potential release date so far.

I'm thinking about getting the Galaxy Note this week...
The big screen will look weird when talking on the phone, but I'm looking forward to having a big screen for media, browsing the web, apps and stuff...
what do you guys think?

Personally I'd take a look at the Sony xperia ion... 12mp camera 1.5 duel core snapdragon processor and 4.6 in screen I don't have an upgrade for like over a year it sucks but it looks sexy hehe

1.5 dual is good
i think the galaxy note is 1.4...
i wish we already had quad cores, but with the lazy development of batteries by phone manufactures, we'r gonna have to wait for that...
i've only had my inspire for about 5 months, but phones are my passion

i woulda been so bored of my inspire by now, but with all the cool roms i can play with its distracting. 12 months to go for upgrade, hope i can last!

My thoughts exactly. With such an active community for the Inspire 4G / Desire HD, an "upgrade" is only a flash away.
Speaking of upgrades, LorD ClockaN has an ICS rom in beta here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
Very smooth. I've been using it as my daily rom for the last two betas. Only problems are a glitchy camera and problems making calls over Bluetooth.

Wait til April for the HTC edge/congressional, 4.7 inch screen and the first quadcore phone and 1.5 GHz quadcore, gonna be a beast

I would wait until the MWC as the phones releases then will become the standard for the year and all updates will be geared towards the hardware released then. I am sticking with HTC who have a proven track record with smart phones and. active development. But that is just me.

This is good advice, especially with MWC only a month away. I don't know about you, but I'd be kicking myself if I upgraded now only to see a whole host of slick new phones coming out in the near future. I wonder if global smartphone sales drop before MWC due to this.

What ATT calls 4G is HSDPA and HSUPA.

Not only that, but the Edge is a different device entirely. The device is actually called the Elite.

I'm sorry, I meant LTE 4G, not the 3.5G type of 4G.

Definitely going LTE with my next upgrade. Loving my Inspire with ARHD. Getting 5-6 mbps download speeds. I expect LTE will blow that away.

im leaving next month for Nexus Prime/Galaxy Note
it's just a slight spec bump from the infuse, and i prefer the larger display
gs2 has a smaller battery and display, i'd rather wait for a bigger upgrade. we'll see what's going on a year from now!
I'll wait til my upgrade in May, will be better choices at that time....

I can wait a few months for AT&T's first LTE phone, and the SGS2 is only a slight spec bump from the Infuse, and it has a smaller screen... I can't go smaller now.
Staying, I dont care for SII....that is until the Rogers SII comes out cause thats gonna have LTE and 4.5" screen.
Nexus Prime or any with LED notification, 4.5 screen, etc....

do we really know the t-mo will not be 1.2 ghz? but if it is 1.5 that's awesome. they are getting phones with exessive power lately. the sensations doesnt need all that gpu power without 3d. but i guess t-mo really wants to keep the tech geeks. they got them all with the g-1 and hd2 and i guess they know that people that passed up the iphone for those phones are gonna want to see specs.
Well I'm glad to hear. I don't wanna leave my Infuse. It's the best phone I've ever had

The European SGS II is exactly the same as the att model other than the capacitive buttons (see review on Engadget.com).
Tmobile SGS II will indeed be quad band wcdma supporting both tmo and att 3g.
While tmo SGS 2 does comes with a qualcomm 1.5ghz chip, it is inferior in processing and gaming to the 1.2ghz Exynos chip in the other ones...
As for me I'm staying put.... I love my Infuse enough that while the SGS 2 looks great and is very tempting, I will wait for Samsung's next super phone that will have a 1.5ghz Exynos processor and a 16 mega pixel camera and will run at 70fps.

Anyone heard what the chipset is on the Vivid yet? While the 1.5 GHz Exynos is appealing; I don't think I can take it being on a Samsung phone anymore. I'm thinking I'd rather have the 1.2 GHz Vivid so I can jump to HTC.
Dude it's not worth upgrading to either of those phones right now. Your best bet is to stick to this Galaxy S II, and wait for the Galaxy S III in February. Do remember that the first LTE phones will most likely have bad battery life.

I'm in very much the same boat as you; although the mod community can make the Captivate better than crap, one's got to admit that staying on Samsung stock would be 100% unbearable.

If upgrading right now, why get the SGSII instead of a Skyrocket or Vivid?
I'm debating which as well. I'm just worried about the SGSII dev support being split between the two (if hardware is different) or there not being much dev support over with the Vivid.
For myself, my phone is a benefit from my work. Which means I should probably stay on the stock ROM since they are paying for it. Not only that, but if something goes wrong during a flash and I mess up my phone I'll be in some trouble at work. Since that leaves me on Samsung's horrible upgrade cycle I'm very inclined to jump ship.
Even though these are new LTE phones for ATT I still believe it's worth it to consider them over the non LTE SGSII. If I'm going to be stuck with a phone for 2 years I would rather have LTE. Since I live in a LTE market it's even more of a draw. If anything, considering the HTC just to get away from Samsung.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to wait a month and see what the reviews are from other XDA members. If the battery life is completely horrible maybe just wait it out. Also my wife is due an update in December. If I do jump and don't like it I could always hand her down whatever I get and pick up something new when we renew her contract.
Regular SGS II is better.
Also be warned that a 4.5 inch screen is unusable.

Ok, well...I have actually had a pretty darn good expierience with my g2x...I just don't keep phones for very long. I have an upgrade available on t-mobile and am wanting to hear from you guys what you think I should get.
My wife just got the Sensation 4g, and she loves it....I don't think I like it that much....especially with a stock rom on it.
Was thinking about the SG II, but not too sure what is coming out in the near future. I know SG II will be getting ICS (as will the sensation)...
Let me know what you think.
Galaxy nexus is the obvious answer for a phone that will be coming out, soonish. Just look it up and watch youtube videos that'll pretty much some it up for you.

Just wait till the next big waves of phones come. Probably around Feb or so. Wait for the next generation S4 processors and Exynos.
None of the current phones which don't have ICS installed when you buy one. I also think you should wait until the next "crop" of phones which will have ICS and quad-core processors, more memory, better screens, etc. Also, check out the Android update history of the company, LG is horrible.
I agree with core. Wait till phones have ICS installed and new quad core processors. ICS is the software that will really make dual or quad cores shine due to its capability of multi-threading. Till then just make due. As far as i have seen android usually has a habit of making decent software upgrades every other official release its seems. Like we had donut then éclair but wasn't till froyo came out android was actually looking good. IMHO

I'd say wait for next Gen of phones also. You ask me there's nothing very impressive about this huge galaxy nexus they try to pass off as a phone. If it didn't come out with ics and the nexus name no one would even care. And since a multitude of phones will be upgraded to ics its really not the big deal its hyped up to be.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Ditto on the bandwagon to wait for the next generation. After all the releases the g2x can hold its own. Don't really need a new phone until the following :
1. ICS ROM from CM9 team and manufacturer
2. Easy to root/ develop on
3. Multicore processing
I am very patient. Hell, I bought this g2x on impulse without knowing about xda forum. Never again I paid retail for my phone. Just works out waiting how xda develops a new phone. Better that way. I am very disappointed with amaze 4g and sgs2 from xda forum perspective.
I am a big fan of cm7 and prefer a phone that can run that over stock ROM.
Still, better of waiting. By then prices plunge and you can get great phone at a bargain.

Considering op is talking about an upgrade option being available with tmobile, I'm sure he is only looking at subsidized plans. The nexus is not subbed so it will cost him 700 up front. So if your talking about saving subsidized phone you might see much of an upgrade when switching to any of the high end phones being offered right now. You will get extra ram a better screen and better battery but performance will be about on par with your g2x. I would say wait. I don't believe there will be any quad core phones in the next six months but the longer you wait the better the chance your phone might get an official update to jellybean and its possible a quad might appear. It might be buggy cause it's first gen but it's something I guess

Yeah but where is it going to be released to is the question. Samsung phones are usually released 6 months in advanced internationally. Most updated roms are released internationally before it hits these shores. I doubt we will get the first quad core.

I agree with mysterioustko, don't waste lots of money losing money on your G2X and buying something now because you're disatisfied with what you have. Wait until ICS is available for the G2X and evaluate the phone's desirability again. If you're still disatisfied, wait until the new crop of phones are selling with ICS and research the manufacturer's update history and never buy an NVIDIA (Tegra) chipped phone, get one which has chips that have totally open sourced technical information for drivers, etc., such as the Texas Instrument chips in the new Google Nexus phone. When the new crop of phones are first sold, wait a few months until the hype abates and real user and developer experiences/evaluations are available and read them thoroughly. As well, research what independent developers are supporting with alternative kernels and ROMs.

Looking forward to it. Although my S2 is pretty bad ass. Hard to imagine how much better it will get.
Powered by the SGSII....
Looks like most of the phone is the display, no haptic keys. Any rumors on the physical dimensions of the phone. From the image, i'd guess it's a little less than 5" diagonal. So, perhaps it's just slightly bigger physically than the S2. I'm hoping for at least 720p resolution on this bad boy lol.
this is dumb as all hell. why dont we just go buy an iphone with one button besides the volume, camera and power buttons. im all for new phones but im not getting sold into the hype of every damn phone coming out. how is it people get suckered into 2 year contract just for a "newer better" phone to be released in the next three months. c'mon people grow a damn brain. im pretty sure thats why alot of devs are still on the htc sensation because its still about half a year old.
IMO Samsung is the only smart phone manufacture whose flagship is worth 2 year contract, with their hardware staying to current performance standards for about 1.5 years after release. Saying from my vibrant experience and seeing what is happening with GS2 (not the US LTE versions that came out late with different hardware). Also Samsung has a clear strategy with their flagship unlike HTC, LG, Motorola etc who bring out so many flagships in quick succession, they don't know what they are doing. Now if SG3 is released with penta band support i would pick up the international version and stay on t-mobile without extending contract.

The original SGS Vibrant came out 8 months or more before the 4G so yes, Samsung Android phones do stay "current" for the next 1.5 years stated.
The dual-core processor is limited to very few phones so a 1 Ghz with a GPU phone processor from almost 2 years ago is incredible.
When T-Mobile released the SGS4G, it was primarily because the Vibrant and all other Galaxy S variants were so successful. Samsung and T-Mobile wanted to milk the franchise before the S2 was released.
4.8 does seem HUGE coming from another phone, but it's kinda like coming from the Vibrant to this phone. At first it seems collosal but easy to get used to. I haven't seen the Note in person but honestly it looks monstrous in the commercial. Not sure I'd wanna go any bigger than the S2.

I'm definitely buying it , I got to get outta this dev community on this version of this phone , don't get me wrong I love the phone but the development sucks and its too childish in here and that's why I mainly stay away, hopefully with a different phone it will be better or at least the forum community will hopefully be better
Meh... I'm not upgrading until T-Mo comes out with the Note or something comparable. 4.8 inches isn't big enough for me to consider it an upgrade. 5.3 or bust, IMO.

Well the note has cwm now as of today and we have people flashing the tmobile radios to see if it works with 4G. If it does im ditching my nexus for one until the SGS3 comes.

A 4.8" screen with near zero bezel would be near perfect. Though the phone I really want is the HTC Zeta (if it ever gets made).

I'll definitely buy it no questions asked. I just have to get a dev one so I can get updates.
Anything bigger than our SII's seems too large for me. Everything is perfect about my SII including the size.

Did samsung release the original SGS2 before the ipjone 4s was released?

SG3

Being an HTC customer for years, I'm debating if I should jump ship to a Samsung product, the SG3. Should I and why? Or is Tmobile getting another HTC device in the near future worth waiting for?

I am planing to join samsung club too. I have been using HTC over a year now. I am just thinking its time to change. As for as more into why Samsung s3 newest phone with lot of Kool thinking like just looking at the contact will dial number or screen will not dim . Better processor and super amolded screens are few.
Question of if HTC coming up with something new maybe yes because these companies are coming out with new phones every single month

not me, never been a fan of Samsung phones... personally, I dont like the look of the phone. Im waiting for my next upgrade to come around before I start looking for a new phone, around October. the Sensation is def more than enough until then
i would surely choose HTC One X than SGS3

I'd have to go with One S since I'm on T-Mobile.

**** SGs3 if you whant allways the better feel of aosp, buy a galaxy nexus or any new upcoming galaxy phone from google,
btw i prefer the HTC one X
I was a sony fan then went to samsung....never going back! Looked at HTC's, rooting is alot more work than samsung and samsung have alot more custom ROMS available but the speeds etc of the standard firmware was perfect, i just like messing with things, constantly playing about with the S2 my S3 is for work purposes but tempted to become a toy aswell

Honestly? I'd go GS3 if I was gonna upgrade right now. The One S is 'eh' at best and since it's a "high end HTC device", we probably won't see another one for a while. I contemplated upgrading to it within the week but they said I'd lose my 10 GB grandfathered data plan - which I absolutely refuse to do.
Funny thing too, they offered me a One S for $350 + Two year extension. I asked them if they realized that it's two hundred to two fifty on Craigslist in my area. They had nothing to say to that.
I absolutely love the SGS3, but wouldn't get it right now for T-Mobile for three reasons.
First, the T-Mo version costs more than other carriers SGS3s. That just rubs me the wrong way.
Second, we get the Qualcomm S4 version here. Dual core? Seriously?? I think that's lame considering EU gets the Exynos quad core version.
And last, and most annoying, the T-Mo SGS3 won't be compatible with the upcoming LTE because of the spectrum T-Mo is planning to use. Boo!
TL;DR I'd just wait. Sensation isn't top of the line anymore, but it's still pretty decent until some real upgrades find their way stateside.
Well i thought google said they will release at least 5 nexus devices in november, one for each different manufacturer. Why not get the next htc nexus then?

What's bad with dual core? The S4 keeps up with the Tegre3 and even beats it in some benchmarks. Does Android even benefit from quad core yet? I don't believe it really does. Hell, I have eight cores in my notebook and Windows hardly uses four of em.
If you want a good phone with good performance and best AOSP experience (speed, battery life, etc) wait for upcoming nexus.
I can live with sensation until google released new nexus phone.
But if you want a beautiful software and functionality go to HTC.
I dont like samsung experience but i should admit their hardware still the best (not its build quality tho).

I was considering to get the S3 but went to T-Mobile store and I was underwhelmed. Mainly because of the screen. And it didn't give me that wow feeling.
Anyways, I will wait. Sensation is pretty awesome at the moment.

Yeah, decided on waiting too.

Nothing bad with it really. Like I said, our Sensations are more than capable right now with dual core. It's just that if I'm going to break out the wallet and potentially renew my contract, it better be for a serious upgrade. An update from s3 to s4 just doesn't blow me away.
Remember when our Sensations came out and GB wasn't ready for dual core? Well now we have ICS and all is good. Same concept. I'd really hate to be on a dual core SGS3 and then the next version of Android comes out supporting quad core.
Silly to upgrade now. The GS3 is certainly "better" than the Sensation, but it's not enough of an improvement imo to justify the upgrade. I side with the people who say you should upgrade once new phones absolutely blow yours out of the water, not when they are merely a bit better. S4 dual core is pretty nice, and it beats the Sensations lackluster S3, but I'd rather wait for S4 quad core + Adreno 320 (a truly next gen gpu rather than Adreno 225, which is a slightly modified version of our gpu) or A15 exynos + Mali t-604 phones to hit, because they will undoubtedly roundhouse kick our sensations.

Good point. I, however, would like to mention that I never meant that I would get a GSIII right now, cause I'd have one if I did. All I meant was that if OP was getting a phone upgrade right now, GSIII over any HTC offering [T-Mobile's One S] is the way to go.
