Music on WP7 - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been thinking about using WP7 again, for a longer peroid of time this time, but my gripe is the lack of a microsd card or larger storage sizes of the phones. I don't mind tearing it apart and manually installing a microsd card, but would prefer to not have to do anything extra, and risk killing a 32gb card in the process.
What would your guys best solution be for me, is there a really good streaming service that I can stream my 5000+ songs to it? I really like the lumina 800, i would prefer to stick to something smaller than the titan as well, probably smaller than the hd7 too.

well theres skydrive ut that prob wont handle 5000+ songs.......honestly if you want that many songs you should prob go for an ipod or a zune.....a dedicated MP3 player...the wp7 has the capability to play music but its not an mp3 player its a phone.
best of luck!

I know you want to play your collection but is subscribing to Zune Pass out of the question? Since you are already streaming it seems like the way to go unless you don't want to spend the $10 a month.

There is zune pass which has a lot of songs and is directly integrated into the windows phone os. If that's not enough, there are many music streaming services that provide you with a wide variety of songs.
The only drawback is that they will cost you for their service.

5000 songs OMG
you can listen for a years ^^

My Zune pass and Last.FM app along with Google Music give me access to all the music I could ever want. Third party Pandora apps in marketplace too. Music is one of the top reasons I waited for WP7 to launch last year.

[Q] just got my g tablet and need a little help

First off can't put it down, this thing is insane an I didn't even hack it yet. (Waiting to go buy a micro SD card) Got a couple of questions. I use iTunes and would like to stream my library to my g tablet, is there a compadiable app,or do ibhave to move my library to windows media player, if so is there an app that will allow me to control my library like iPhones remote app? And lastly any kick a$$ apps out there? In the short time I've had it found a killer emulator and spent the day kicking it old school...lol thanks in advanced to all who respond.
Unfortunately I can't suggest an iTunes sync app as I don't use it.
As for killer apps, you might want to mention some of your interests in a tablet - ie. video playback (Rockplayer), ebooks (Aldiko), comics (ACV or JJComics Viewer) etc.
Sync
Try doubletwist for syncing your music (but not streaming)

My big thing is trying to find a way to get icefilm.info or something similar to it to stream movies on here so I can hook it up to the dock with HDMI to my TV.

Daap player: http://code.google.com/p/daap-client/ hmm, can't get this to work
Might need to run an alternative server since itunes doesn't like to play nice with the standard. I run a firefly server on my nas.

Podcasts
Any suggestions on getting podcasts to sync? Using doubletwist doesn't exactly work properly; audio podcasts show up as playlists, not podcasts, which is OK, but video podcasts don't work at all.
Does anyone use any other program that will actually automatically download podcasts? It seems like most of the apps I've looked at are written for phones with 3g connections to listen to streaming podcasts, which the G-tab obviously doesn't do.
thanks

You can use .podkast or google listen.
I've used BeyondPod previously and works pretty well. It would be perfect if it were free, but i guess $7.00 is not too much of a price to pay after the trial is over.
Google listen seems to work for some people, but not others; I am apparently one of the others, because it will only stream and I can't figure out how to make it download, even though I've told it to do so.
I'm thinking of trying beyondpod or doggcatcher, but don't really want to pay until I know they'll work. Guess I'll go for the free trial.
Thanks!

I don't have any Apple products or use iTunes myself but I highly doubt that you'll be able to perform a direct sync between your TF and your iPod (if that's what you're hoping to achieve) due to Apple's stance on copyrighted material. For example they deliberately disable file sharing on their iDevices via Bluetooth in a bid to combat piracy (e.g. music). Thus I would imagine there's a similar block of sorts in place with iTunes in terms of not being able to transfer stuff directly from iTunes onto a non-Apple product. Unless someone else can post a workaround of some description you might have to take a long-winded route to transfer the same stuff that's on your iPod/iTunes onto your TF.
If however you're asking about software that performs a similar function to iTunes but which is built for the TF, you could try downloading the Asus software from their website and see what it can do. I've never really used it before so I'm not entirely sure what it offers.
The only other thing I can suggest is to simply plug your TF into your computer, which should be detected as a mass storage device as long as you have the correct drivers installed. You can then simply click-and-drag your music from your chosen folder onto the TF's internal memory.
Hope this helps.
[EDIT]: Oh, 100th post .
the ipod music format will not play on the TF. If it is not copy protected (DRM) you can export to cd then load on tf. Now you see why they are so disliked. You bought the song and tbey still want to tell you what you can listen to it on.
I use iSyncr
It's specifically for getting your iTunes stuff, including smart playlists etc. onto an android device, it's two way as well. Works great and is well supported with regular updates.
Can't recall how much it was, but I've not regretted the purchase.
It's not exactly syncing with your iPod but only one step removed.
Cheers.

Thanks jonitfcfan and Rumbleweed for ur reply. all I want to do is transfer music from TF to my iPod. I do not need the other way around. so I dont think the question of file format comes
@movingpixels: so can the iSyncr do this job? Just want to confirm before I purchase it. Thanks

None of this is true. The iPod music formats are mp3/AAC, both of which play fine on the TF. Even iTunes music store purchases have been DRM-free for years now. You can drag your music onto the TF (or SD or MicroSD). You can also sync your iTunes library to Google Music or Amazon and access them through those sites (or through their associated apps).

MP3 ? I thought that iTunes converted whatever audio you imported into M4A/AAC format before sending it to your iDevice?

Tips on making the best of 10GB of storage space when storing music

Tips on making the best of 10GB of storage space when storing music on the HTC One S.
What doesn't work:
1) Dropbox, Google Drive ..... you can store files there but finding and playing them is a bag of hurt because the players are so rudimentary and the music is not cataloged like it is for stock Android player and PowerAMP
2) An OTG USB cable and a 32, 64 or 128GB USB Flash Drive. HTC could have saved this phone for music collections if they had implemented this feature, but they didn't. The microUSB port on the One S doesn't provide power, so for mobile listening of music it really isn't as option even it you hack OTG into your kernel.
3) Wifi based systems. With a bit of effort you could probably get a working system when your phone on your own home network, but chances are you use your phone for music when you are away from home.
The Good News:
The HTC One S has really fast internal memory, a good memory controller and the USB I/O is very fast. If you have a decent computer file transfer very quickly to the phone.
The HTC One S has very good audio quality and a good output.
What You Need
1) Your music collection, most likely quite a bit larger than 10GB
2) Media Monkey Software for your PC computer (http://www.mediamonkey.com) Forget about the HTC Sync software
3) PowerAmp for Android or Stock Android Player (PowerAMP has lyric support and is quite well laid out)
The reason I picked Media Monkey is that it has great cataloging features and a very powerful and customizable file sync with Android devices. My HTC Ones S shows up as a Hero but all the sync functions work. ( I have used this program for years) I am sure most of the other popular player software would work too
What to Do
The nature of the beast is that you are choosing which music to leave behind. If your music isn't cataloged then you can't possibly do this efficiently. This takes a lot of time and is best done as you get new music. You need at least the rating filled in for each track. I also have mood and tempo which really adds to your options. If you don't want to catalog then this advice isn't going to help you so you may as well stop here.
1) Catalog your music in Media Monkey (or other player software)
2) Plug in your HTC One and set to Disk Mode ...... it should show up as a HTC Hero
3) Using Media Monkey, set up a new collection filtered with for tracks having 5 star rating
Presumably you would only want to transfer your best tracks
If you have a smallish collection this may reduce the number of files sufficiently to fit on the HTC One S (skip to 4)
4) Set up another Collection filtered for being added to your library less than 30 days ago
Presumably you would like to listen to your new music
5) Click on the HTC Hero node on the library and select sync options.
6) Select only the above 2 collections for sync
7) Chances are that there are still way too many files to fit into 9GB, so select the option to randomly sync files to your device matching the above filters leaving about 500-1000GB left unused OR just manually pick the artists and albums you want to sync.
8) Autosync the phone (takes about 2 minutes for me)
9) Autosync again once in a while to get a new random set
You could tell Media Monkey to compress the files as they are moved to the player, but this hugely increases the time required for the sync and you may loose album art and lyric support depending on which format you pick.
It is far from a idea solution but it works

Orr you can sync your music to Google Play and stream from there. IF you have the 2GB plan I almost never go over that, plus it only streams it the first play and stays in your cache for replay later. Best Solution for me, at least for Music. After that I have plenty of room for everything else and file With Drop Box and Box and Google Drive.
I usually just convert my files to ~40kbit (VBR quality 0.25) HE-AACv2 files. Unless you really really concentrate, you'll be hard pressed finding any difference between these files and CD quality. And I've got about 6,000 songs in under 7 GB.
I use dbPowerAmp for the conversion, and the Nero AAC codec.

Dude, have you even tried HE-AACv2? That codec is pretty legendary. Of course you can tell the difference but it's very barely noticeable. Try it yourself.

[Q] Best Audiogalaxy replacement for music streaming

I've been using Audiogalaxy for a while, but that's dead now . I'm looking for a good free set of software that will replace it.
I want something that streams music from my computer, as opposed to the cloud, mainly because I do use Google Play Music a bit and it's tedious at updating tags and files. (Long story, known issue).
I've looked at subsonic, but am not a terribly huge fan, and they require a license on the server that they call a "donation". Looked at Tonido, but they also want money for you to "share" more than 2gb of music that you will be streaming from your own computer (right..... no thanks). Plex might work, but the UI is pretty terrible, and I've had poor results with the streaming when using it for videos.
Google Music would be excellent, but as I said, the sync is kind of lousy. I've got a large collection and I'm re-cataloging it, fixing tags, etc. AFAIK, I'd have to delete everything and re-upload it to get it to update.
I have a similar issue I have a little over 300 gig of music, their isn't a server out there that can allow me to put 300 gig in the cloud without me paying money I need something that I can stream right from my computer. Audiogalaxy was awesome! stupid move on their part
Using QuikIO as replacement for AudioGalaxy
I switched to QuikIO on my iPhone/iPad. It works fine for me on 3G/LTE and Wi-Fi. It needs a bit more enhancements for functionality for music but it also supports a lot more media type - video, photo, and document. I would recommend others to give it a try.

They don't have an android app yet
I found out about a media server app for pc called Serviio. It works really well to stream music, movies, and pictures over a mobile connection using 2 apps for android called ServiiGo and Serviidroid. Setup is pretty easy, try that out and good luck!
oh but unfortunately you can't scrobble to last.fm if thats something you are also looking to do.

GMusic device

I recently subscribed to GMusic all access, and I'm liking the service very much. I work out 4-5x week for 2h, and I need music. I've been using my Nexus 4 but it's too big and bulky and gets in the way. An armband helps, but I'd like to have a dedicated music playing device. It doesn't help that I've already smashed the screen on my N4 once while running with it (something I don't do anymore, and I don't run all that often, but it'd be nice to have something I can run with and won't fall/isn't worth $400). I found an old iPod Nano (6th gen I think) that would work great but there's no way to reverse sync it with GMusic (I manage my playlists, etc. on GMusic, not iTunes) and it won't get me any of my All Access content.
My conclusion is sell the iPod for whatever I can get (it's like new, so I don't think $60-80 is unreasonable) and get a cheap android phone to use as a dedicated GMusic streaming device. I'm thinking requirements are:
ICS+ (to be able to run current and future GMusic apps)
<4" screen. Shouldn't be too hard seeing as that keeping price low is a priority
WiFi (to stream)
Headphone out and half decent sound quality (i.e. not garbage sound, I'm no audiophile)
Custom ROMs would be nice, but not a requirement at all
I'm open to suggestions, including china phones and used phones (going off average market price)
