I've been using Audiogalaxy for a while, but that's dead now . I'm looking for a good free set of software that will replace it.
I want something that streams music from my computer, as opposed to the cloud, mainly because I do use Google Play Music a bit and it's tedious at updating tags and files. (Long story, known issue).
I've looked at subsonic, but am not a terribly huge fan, and they require a license on the server that they call a "donation". Looked at Tonido, but they also want money for you to "share" more than 2gb of music that you will be streaming from your own computer (right..... no thanks). Plex might work, but the UI is pretty terrible, and I've had poor results with the streaming when using it for videos.
Google Music would be excellent, but as I said, the sync is kind of lousy. I've got a large collection and I'm re-cataloging it, fixing tags, etc. AFAIK, I'd have to delete everything and re-upload it to get it to update.
I have a similar issue I have a little over 300 gig of music, their isn't a server out there that can allow me to put 300 gig in the cloud without me paying money I need something that I can stream right from my computer. Audiogalaxy was awesome! stupid move on their part
Using QuikIO as replacement for AudioGalaxy
I switched to QuikIO on my iPhone/iPad. It works fine for me on 3G/LTE and Wi-Fi. It needs a bit more enhancements for functionality for music but it also supports a lot more media type - video, photo, and document. I would recommend others to give it a try.

They don't have an android app yet
I found out about a media server app for pc called Serviio. It works really well to stream music, movies, and pictures over a mobile connection using 2 apps for android called ServiiGo and Serviidroid. Setup is pretty easy, try that out and good luck!
oh but unfortunately you can't scrobble to last.fm if thats something you are also looking to do.

Subsonic can do it, and i have heard of others, like Orb. I've never tried any of the others. Subsonic runs on your PC (windows/linux/mac) and then there is a client app for your device (android/iphone/pc). You can also access the music via the web interface.
For the client apps, like the android app, you need to donate to the subsonic open source project to get an unlimited streaming license, but I think it was well worth the couple bucks. If you donate, you also get a <foo>.subsonic.org domain so you can easily access your music. I use it daily. My only grip about it is that it caches the music on the SD card and if you set up a large playlist, it prefetches all the music and it doesn't automatically clean up after itself, which can fill up the SD card a bit.

For streaming my library, I run a linux server with Ampache (sorry, I'm new and can't post a link). Then for my android Evo 4g, I use the android clients like Lullaby or Amdroid (both in the Market).
Pretty slick solution I think.
...of course you can use a windows box to host the Ampache site. Ampache requires a web server, MySQL, and PHP.
Homepipe
Look for an app called Homepipe. It will stream music as well as giving you access to files/directories on your home PC. It uses an app on your PC for connecting. Pretty slick but be careful of bandwidth.

Nextapp is the company who create it, I use regularly everyday and is a good one!!
AFAIK, there's currently no way to do a raw audio stream from Android over the network; and I can almost guarantee you it won't be possible at all without root. Closest you could get would be getting a Bluetooth audio sink (like this or the official Nexus home dock) and hooking that to your hifi. There are apps to stream local content via DLNA, but there isn't anything to stream arbitrary audio in Android.
EDIT: Some PC Bluetooth stacks may also be able to receive A2DP audio as well, but it's not a universal feature.
Check out mecanto, it's an app that syncs your music to the cloud and then you can stream it from the cloud and play on your phone.

I'm amazed that there's no interest in this. I'm sure I haven't searched enough and so probably should pick on a more current thread. But it seems a no-brainer to me to want to go this direction. Everyone discusses streaming from PC to phone. Why would I do that instead of just listening to the PC? Now if I could stream from phone to PC... I have many phone apps that let me listen to unlimited tunes and radios from all over the world, which of course I use outside the house. But using it in this way in the house, my phone would not only be the source, but the "remote" -- the controller. Walk around the house w/ just the phone. Beats my carrying my Squeezebox "portable" radio, as I do. Or maybe I need to pay $150 for the Squeezebox solution, their remote controller... Just don' get it.
yes. i also think this is a great idea. there a heaps of pc to android threads.
usage scenario i am thinking.
walking around with device. the device contains song files and player. if that player had a button like stream to ie desktop, home theatre speakers, etc etc. that would be great. sorta like wmp 12 stream to button if anyone is familiar with that. bluetooth has the restriction of range so ideally wifi would be the better solution. curious to know if anyone has come across any updates to this.
I use 2 apps because im undecided which is best firt one is called 2play dnla
and the other is upnp. search in the market for both :-D

Theres an app called Twonky which acts as media server on your Android. It lets you stream upnp to whatever device you have capable such as Apple TV, Playstation etc. I have an AC Ryan Playon HD player which is hooked to my local network and I am able to recieve and play media through this to my HD TV from my Desire over wifi.

Im currently using PS3 media server for the PS3 and StreamToMe for sending to my iphones/ipads. They both work excellent. Was also amazed with the lack of streaming programs.
A simple solution that worked for me from a windows pc to android was was using ES File Explorer (free), choose LAN from dropdown (top left), add new server, scan - it should then pick up your shared network.
Then navigate to your chosen movie, play with moboplayer. Voila.
If it doesn't play straight away make sure moboplayer is set to soft decoder.
Sometimes you may have to press and hold your movie icon, open as video, choose moboplayer.

I think MyPhoneExplorer can do that (not sure)
For youtube videos: the youtube app can link with your pc through Youtube leanback
There is an app called "Remote Droid Player"(play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.newandroid). Though it needs a small application needs to be installed on PC.

Still no way to stream every sound that your android device plays to your PC? Is it not technically possible to create and android server that sends a raw stream of sound to the PC over wifi?
All the solutions linked in this thread requires you to actively choose what mp3 to listen to. I want to stream notifications/spotify/radio/everything that is played.
First off can't put it down, this thing is insane an I didn't even hack it yet. (Waiting to go buy a micro SD card) Got a couple of questions. I use iTunes and would like to stream my library to my g tablet, is there a compadiable app,or do ibhave to move my library to windows media player, if so is there an app that will allow me to control my library like iPhones remote app? And lastly any kick a$$ apps out there? In the short time I've had it found a killer emulator and spent the day kicking it old school...lol thanks in advanced to all who respond.
Unfortunately I can't suggest an iTunes sync app as I don't use it.
As for killer apps, you might want to mention some of your interests in a tablet - ie. video playback (Rockplayer), ebooks (Aldiko), comics (ACV or JJComics Viewer) etc.

I'm a techie type Guy, for instance getting this unit to sync my music, pictures and to get it to start my car or control my lighting, things like that.
Also an avid gamer,loving the emulators
My big thing is trying to find a way to get icefilm.info or something similar to it to stream movies on here so I can hook it up to the dock with HDMI to my TV.

Might need to run an alternative server since itunes doesn't like to play nice with the standard. I run a firefly server on my nas.

Any suggestions on getting podcasts to sync? Using doubletwist doesn't exactly work properly; audio podcasts show up as playlists, not podcasts, which is OK, but video podcasts don't work at all.
Does anyone use any other program that will actually automatically download podcasts? It seems like most of the apps I've looked at are written for phones with 3g connections to listen to streaming podcasts, which the G-tab obviously doesn't do.

You can use .podkast or google listen.
I've used BeyondPod previously and works pretty well. It would be perfect if it were free, but i guess $7.00 is not too much of a price to pay after the trial is over.
Google listen seems to work for some people, but not others; I am apparently one of the others, because it will only stream and I can't figure out how to make it download, even though I've told it to do so.
I'm thinking of trying beyondpod or doggcatcher, but don't really want to pay until I know they'll work. Guess I'll go for the free trial.

I've installed Google Music on my D2G running Galnet MIUI and I'm loving it.
I have another Android device, a supercheap WM8650 tablet running Uberoid. I want to turn it into a cloud player using Google Music so I can play my music on it without having to buy more high-capacity microSD cards.
So I installed Google Music on it (latest version - I'm not in the USA so I have to download the apk externally), and it promptly stopped working. I googled a bit, and it appears Google Music has trouble running on generic devices. I'm wondering if the reason for this is known, and if there are ways to fix this problem. I'd have no problems using one of the alternatives, but from what I'm seeing Google Music is the only one that doesn't have ridiculously restrictive storage - I have 15 gigs worth of ogg files, so stuff like Droptunes is useless to me.
You could try browsing to music.google.com from a browser that supports user agent spoofing, like dolphin HD, and set it to a Desktop user agent?
I know that's kind of a crappy workaround, but I'm not sure about why GM wouldn't work well on generic android devices...

Sounds fine in principle, but doesn't work so well on my tablet - it's very slow, and it takes a long time for the site just to load the list, let alone launch the player. I really need a native app.
The only alternative I've found so far is Audiogalaxy (a name I remember fondly from the early days of peer-to-peer... *sigh* ), but that isn't a cloud storage player, just a streaming player. In other words, if I want to have my library permanently available I need to have a computer with significant storage always on and connected, acting as a file server. A Windows computer, so I can't use any old diskless laptop with a USB thumbdrive. And if my connection or power goes down I can kiss my files goodbye. And the server wastes power.
This will do as an emergency measure, but I really need someplace to put my files. Is there a music player that will work from normal ftp storage? I have a website, I could easily upload my music to the space I use for it.

How do you sync your podcast subscriptions and playback location between Android and Windows/Mac/Linux? I'm open to anything, and gPodder looks nice, but even though its app page on the Play Store says it supports syncing across devices it definitely does not (the Android app doesn't even have an options menu).
I'd love to utilize my personal server somehow as a web player, but that's not a big deal and probably isn't possible without writing a system completely from scratch. Basically, I need a good podcast app that allows me to download OR stream podcasts to/from my phone and that syncs subscriptions AND playback position with either a) server software that I can install/manage, or b) an app that works with Cloud Caster.
(Free apps are greatly preferred but I'm willing to pay a couple bucks for a good app. The web player isn't completely necessary, I'm fine with a client like gPodder offers if necessary, but the web player would be nice.)
