Hey, I recently just got the ATT version of Nexus S, running on T-Mobile. I HAVE 4G data in my plans but with this phone I am not getting 4G. I am understanding that this device is not a 4G device so I should at least be getting 3G (3.5) you think, but I am not even getting that. I am getting 2G only. Any ideas?

The ATT version is not compatible with T-Mobile 3G (which is why it is the ATT version)
I have the exact opposite problem. I have a T-Mobile Nexus S on At&t...only get 2G
then you 2 should exchange your phones....

I just bought the i9020A model Nexus S, and after research I found out that its meant to be used for ATT. I have T-Mobile and I am not getting 3G Network because the bands are different. Now people are telling me that if I unlock/root it, I might be able to get T-Mobile bands. Is this true?

Nope - it does not have the hardware to support the AWS HSPA frequencies. It has quad band GSM (So you'll get Edge service fine), but not HSPA.

It depends on the phone model, but if it is new, chances are it supports both. What kind of phone is it?
You will only get 2G speeds on AT&T. This is true with even the newest of phones (Sensation, MT4G Slide...)
I have a brought my European One S to USA. I am on Tmobiles mothly4g plan but my mobile internet speed does not go up more then Edge. Does my phone allow me to use Tmobiles 4g or at least 3g? I am a little confused with all the radios and everything, is there any way I can make 4g work on my European One S? Thank you!
I don't think the International one s has the tmo 4G bands. You'd be better off with like a straight talk att sim.
So I have a Nexus s that I got from best buy for AT&T and I recently dropped AT&T for T mobile. I'm trying to update my nexus to 4.1 and I keep getting the status 7 error. My version was and still is I9020A and that's the update version I tried. Do I need to use the T mobile one even though its different? Just trying not to brick my phone. Sorry if this is a little confusing. Sorta new to this.
Thanks!
The rom for the i9020A is the same rom for the i9020T. You are getting that error because your Clockworkmod recovery is old, update it.
You can also flash the factory image from here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Please let us know if you get 3G on Tmobile with it and what area you're in.

The radio is the only difference. I9020A runs on 850/1900 while I9020T runs on 900/1700/2100.
So you won't get HSPA on your phone, only EDGE if you have I9020A on T-Mobile.

Actually at some location T-Mobile sim works with 1900 band now, due to the deal after the failed buyout by ATT. I got 3G on T-Mobile using an unlocked Captivate.
So I bought a sidekick 4g thinking I could use my at&t sim card for it and got it unlocked but have one problem. I can only get 2g at the most on my network and asked the service provider who provided me with the unlock code for a solution to this. They told me something about T-Mobile running a different network than at&t and how at&t was updating there network so that I could get 4g on my phone and how it was going to be ready before the end of this year... Is it possible to get 4g yet or any other way around this?

Nope, that person lied to you as well.
AT&T and T-Mobile have different HSPA (4G technically) bands. I think AT&T uses the 850mhz HSPA Band, while T-Mobile uses a different one. Since thats the case, your SIM Card is looking for a band that the phones modem dosent have. Thus, knocks you back to EDGE. Forever.
