[Q] HTC Sensation talk time, very low - HTC Sensation

Hello!
I have a big problem with my HTC Sensation (Europe). My talk-time is much lower than anticipated, I only get about 2 hours from a full battery.
Todays stats:
100% to 45% on 5h 30m
voice 81% 1h 32 m talk time
100% to 18% on 7h 28m
voice 79% 1h 52m talk time
If I don't talk on the phone my battery holds 24H. I have my syncing set to a minimum.
Can anyone come with suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
Ps. My reception is good, between 3-4 bars.

BATTERY Performance / Expectations

I'm just wondering if some other Sensation owners can chime in with their battery stats. I've had the phone for a couple of days now, and with a few battery cycles behind me, I'm still concerned. I do understand the "new toy factor" of using a new gadget much more frequently than normal, but what specifically concerns me is the amount of juice the display is using. With push email on, twitter sync on, auto brightness on, and mostly indoor use, I am finding that I can't get more than 3 hours of Display On time. At the moment I have the following stats:
17% Battery Remaining
9h 5m 9s on battery
Display: 80% (Time on 2h 7m 31s)
Cell standby: 8%
Phone idle: 5%
Wi-Fi: 5%
Maps: 2%
Usage has consisted of some light web browsing, just a few minutes of phone calls, lots of texting / email, and general playing. At the moment, I can barely make it to the afternoon, let alone a full day. Is this comparable to what most of you are seeing or do I have a bad battery? Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S I was hoping for better performance but so far this is far worse ( I used to get 5+ hours of Display On time )..
Thx..
45% remaining
On battery 6 hours
Display on 2hr 10min
Display 85%
WiFi 6%
Cell standby 6%
Phone idle 3%
Comparable to my DHD I'd say, possibly a bit better. Custom roms did improve that though
Funny thing is my girlfriends galaxy s has shocking battery drain, particularly in standby. She's currently on Darkys ROM and I've given up trying to figure why she can never last a day with her phone.

Coming from a G2 and this phone seems to be much worse. At work I would make it through the afternoon with very minimal usage mostly idle and checking my email on it 8-10 times and have 80%+ left over when I left the office after 9 hours off the charger. Even mostly idle I'm at 50-60% during the same timespan with a 20% bigger battery. Yesterday I was @ 95% and used the GPS for 30 minutes and it dropped the battery down to 60% in that small time period.
My batyery sucks big time... I trained it once - didnt do anything. Still get about 8 hrs between 7am and 8pm. Light to moderate usage :-(
Maybe i should look into finding a bigger battery

I get about 14-17 hours, depending on usage. I'll post my stats later today as I'm at 100% right now.
I would disable htc hub from syncing. It syncs every few minutes and drains the hell out of the battery. I also disable always on mobile data and that helps save the battery when my phone is idle but things that you auto sync might have problems. My .02.

This is pretty much my usage.
I can get over 24 hours pretty easily if i'm only using it for a phone call here or there. This is with Wifi turned on(and wifi calling on), auto-brightness, and auto-synching set to different intervals. Exchange email is set to every 15 mins, google set to push, FB is manual, weather is set to once a day.
If I'm using it pretty heavy, browsing the web, playing a game or two(peggle & plants vs zombies), I'll get typically around 12-14 hours.
For the first few days the battery life in my brand new Sensation sucked too. I was getting maybe 8-9 hours of moderate usage before having to plug it in to recharge.
On Friday night (June 24th), I did a full factory reset through the bootloader, installed Juice Defender and set it on Aggressive setting, and charged it overnight for about 8 hours while the phone was turned off. Yesterday (Saturday, June 25th) after over 18 hours of moderate use, which included many phone calls, emails, some texting, browsing, playing with the phone, and even a little bit of Stupid Zombies, the battery was still at 42%!!!
I charged it overnight again for 8 hours. So far today, after 3.5 hours of HEAVY usage, the battery is at 93%. I am beginning to like this a lot!
Email auto-sync, BT on at all times, some internet radio streaming today and still at 91%. It's been off the charge for 3 hours now. I think that's pretty good compared to my HD2.
I have been very happy with the battery life so far, its better than the battery life was on the MyTouch 4G I had. Can go a whole day no problem, MyTouch 4G couldn't make it a day....
To all you guys that are getting phenomenal battery life, could you check your battery stats and tell us your display usage?
Thx
I will post battery stats later today but battery life has not been as good as I hoped. Compared to the G2x I'm getting worse battery life. Then again, it's too to compare a device that is running a custom rom versus stock.

So with 48% battery left your display had been on for over 3 hours? That is excellent.. Definitely something wrong with my battery if that is the case.

Yup. thats what i read... maybe i should tell you what I did when I got the HTC Ssensation...
I used it and set it up on that batt level that came out of the box... till it switched off... kept if off and charged it the whole night.. about 7 hours.. unplugged.. turned the phone back on.. used it again the whole day and brought the battery level to about 19%.. turned it off.. charged it again full for about 7 hours... and now i am using it as normal!!
EDIT::: hahahahahhahahahahahaha.. no wonder... I am sorry.. its a typo.. 2 hour and 11 Mins.. well now 18 mins!!!
Still quite decent I think.. with the usage!!!
My battery sucked too but its doing much better (ibwas not worried because the same happened to my nexus one). Always moderatevuse and I get about 16 hours of use and still have about 40% left.
I have auto sync on, wifi off, screen brightness on about 60%.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
This is probably the longest lasting device I've used in a while. My G2X would get me about 11 hours with moderate use but my Sensation will last close to 16 hours with moderate use.
The only thing I have syncing is my Gmail account and calendar. I turned off everything else including weather. I also never keep my display set to automatic since that's just another piece of hardware that constantly has to work. Unless I'm in direct sunlight, my display stays at 50%.

[Q] Battery Math

Hey all, been on the forums a long time without much in the way of posting, but thought I would share some numbers with you all to see if others are in the same boat...
I love the Sensation, but I am highly looking forward to S-Off and rooting to get rid of Sense (Sure it's cool, but it's not THAT cool). However, I don't think that custom ROMs will help with my battery, as the major (read HOLY COW) drain on my MAh is from the Screen.
Currently:
Battery Level: 80%
Time on Battery: 3h 40m 41s
Display on: 48m 28s
Percent of Drain:
Display: 80%
Cell Standby: 8% (Time on: 3h 40m, W/out Signal = 16%)
Phone Idle: 6% (2h 51m 13s)
Wi-Fi: 4% (1h 25m 45s)
Voice Calls: 3% (50 seconds)
This is a pretty standard breakdown of my phone on a normal day by lunch.
The math itself becomes pretty easy:
Display = 80% of 20% = 16% of the battery over the course of 48 minutes (rounded down for easy math).
This means that every 3 minutes the display is on, I drop 1% of battery. That is 5mAH per minute. Mind you, this is with brightness set at 0%... When backlight is on at 100%, it goes to about 1% drop in every 2 minutes. (Unless I'm actually doing something and then i can drop almost 1%/minute)
This means to me that, if you are doing NOTHING on your phone, but have the screen turned on with 0% backlight, you will get 300 minutes, or 5 hours. That doesn't seem so bad, but if you are actually doing something on your phone (watching video, using any of the radios, etc.), you will get between 1-3 hours of usage.
This seems a little insane to me, as I am able to watch more than two full length feature films on my iPod Touch before the battery is anywhere NEAR drained.
How do these numbers stack up with what you all have experienced.
P.S. I know there are other battery discussions, but they all seem to be centered on extending battery life, which this is not. It is a simple discussion of the displays drain.
There's a problem: Your computing with 101% total Just kidding. I don't think the measurements are very accurate. For example, it showed me that 3% of my battery drain was due to the Dice application. Well, I rolled the dice about 3 times. Should not exactly drain that much... Now let me show you some other math: The Sensation battery has 1580 mah. There are various tools that will show you the current drain in ma. Dividing mah by ma leaves you with h, i.e. hours. Yesterday, I did the following: Turned on Wifi Access Point, Bluetooth, GPS, Mobile data connection, Music player, display @ max brightness and LED flash, plus me swiping the homescreens around for some time. The drain reached a peak of 900 ma. You will find 1580 / 900 = 1.75 which is already close to 2 hours for which you could do such funny things When watching a video, your power consumption will be much less (The flahs alone is like ~200 ma). I think you will get 4-5 hours with a moderate brightness setting and headphones if you're not streaming over WiFi or something. Try it out and tell us!

mA standby Sensation XE

I have a long experience with custom ROMs on my HD2 were the battery drain during standby is a real checkpoint, usually being around 4 mA.
Having wifi on (never sleep), sync on (2 email accounts - refresh every 5 minutes on peek hours, fb acc and news reader with 27 topics to refresh every 1 hour), 20-40 minutes of call and about 20 minutes internet browsing with 4 mA batt drain in standby, the total autonomy of the battery was around 12-14 hours.
Now, I've got my first Android native phone: Sensation XE. Knowing that battery best performances arise after several charge-discharge cycles, I believe these days the battery will perform at maximum capacity.
What is intriguing me, is the standby battery drain: 120-350 mA. The good record was seen this morning (not charging over night): 32 mA.
Despite this "huge" drain the phone is up, 32% available after 24 heavy hours: 5 hours internet browsing, wifi on (never sleep), sync on (2 email accounts - refresh every 5 minutes on peek hours, fb acc and news reader with 27 topics to refresh every 1 hour) and 10 minutes of call.
The question is: Is there so important to have a low standby batt drain?
The HTC battery driver is horridly coded. It "sticks", it jumps, and I wouldn't even be surprised if the ma drain was severely off.
Until HTC (or a kernel dev) fixes the driver, take all ma readings with a grain of salt.
As for my evidence; battery monitor widget reported consistent 150-200ma drops, yet I was averaging over 18hrs of uptime, and these readings were idle readings. Just the math alone doesn't work out to fit the 1520mAh battery.

Indeed. That's why I still use current widget only to view battery % and don't care anymore about mA drain as I don't want yet to change stock ROM and root my device (and change battery icon to a percet one).

My Battery stats

I am on CatyROM 2.0
My battery stats are:
current battery is: 33%
11h 13m 28s on battery
Voice Calls: 31% --> Time on: 12m 40s
Cell stand by: 30% --> Time on: 11h 13m 28s
Display: 18% --> Time on: 11m 9s (My display is at around 25% - not on auto display)
Phone idle: 12% --> Time on: 11h 2m 18s
Face book: 4% --> CPU usage: 55s, CPU foreground: 55s, stay awake: 5m 34s, GPS: 38s (2 hours after disconnecting the phone from charger, I signed out facebook, so these times are for first 2 hours only)
Android OS: 3% --> CPU usage: 2m 2s
These are my phone stats after I woke up today. As you can see I rarely used my phone after I disconnected my phone form charger. Is these stats or normal. Without using anything, my phone is dying in 15 hours. Is this expected?
My GPS, blue tooth and wifi are off. I am not at auto brightness, brightness is less than 30%.
My auto sync with Gmail is on.
My email app (yahoo) sync settings i changed to never. As per my knowledge, no other apps are running.
If is normal I will stop worrying about battery.. please advice...
Any one help me, whether these stats are normal or not?
15 hours is good. If you were on Froyo, I'd say that's phenomenal. GB definitely improved battery drain though.
The litmus test I use is if it lasts me all day without the need to charge, it's good enough.
Hope this helps.

Your cell standby % being so big indicates that, your phone is struggling to get service.
I am also on caty. If I leave my phone at 100% and fall asleep I will wake up 8 hours later and about 10% will drain.
In contrast, when I'm at work, I get no service. I work in a kitchen and the walls are pure steel. When I leave after a 12 hour shift my cell standby is ridiculous.

So you mean to say that, I dont have enough signal at home, and its keep on trying to get the signal, so thats why my battery is draining fast?
if so what should I do? like if i switch of 3G, it will stop searching for 3G signal, but still i can get the phone calls?
and how can I make sure that, i am having signal fluctuations at home?

Check something for me, click on cell standby next time and tell me how long it says under "time without signal". That should help narrow down the issue.
No matter what though your cell standby shouldn't be that big.
If you turn 3g off you should still be able to receive texts/calls.

Try advanced task manager. Works better if your in froyo or gingerbread. Anyway, I don't know if I need to do this or not but I will reset my battery stats every once in awhile to help with battery life.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Just thought I'd chime in here but, most task killers from the market are pretty pointless. They can actually make things worse especially if your constantly FCing apps. Android has a built in task killer which means your running two task killers if you have a third party one. If your rooted use Juice Defender for slight batt life gains.
Also the battery in our Infuses don't need to have battery stats reset, just pull your battery and reinsert.
People look for some kind of miracle app when in all reality, Android OS/devs already have optimized the system to be pretty conservative while also maintaining a stable system.
I got the issue..
Problem is with Microcell (ATT signal booster).
I dont know exactly whats the reason, but this is what I have done yesterday..
can some one confirm this, who has a Microcell or my microcell may be buggy..
yesterday I fully charged the phone, within 30 mins i lost 5% battery without much use..
Switched of my microcell..
My current battery is: 41%
and phone on battery is 15h 4m 34s..
voice calls 1h 10m 34s
display 1h 1m 1s
i am pretty satisfied..
I'm on CatyRom 2.0 also, I'm on 21 hrs at 37% battery. Light/medium use. What I've really found makes a difference is to turn location services and GPS off. I leave the Wifi on but it only turns on when the phone screen is on. (menu button>advanced in Wireless Settings). Before I was getting 40% drain overnight sometimes. Now about 5-8% overnight (6 hrs).
EDIT: And use the built-in task killer.

That looks usual
When my screen is on my battery drains about 1% per minute.
What is your max cpu speed?
Bad battery?
Those stats look normal for the most part, but it also depends on how long the screen was on vs how long the phone was on overall.
Cell standby appears a bit high at first glance, which definitely causes some additional drain if you don't have reception during standby and the phone is searching for reception.

I used the built-in Battery Calibration to calibrate the battery like last week and I noticed that by the end of the day, I still had at least 30% of battery...
I use it to text, listen to music and talk everyday at night at least 3-4 hours with my girl...
I'd suggest to root phone, try a new rom, or use any calibration apps from play store and follow the instructions... worked with my 2 previous phones.. Huawei Ascend, Motorola Droid 2 Global.. and this is 6th android I have and I love it a lot.
The screen is set to 25%. It's only on for about 45 minutes.
I have rooted the phone and am running a very new rom.
i'm pretty much in the same position, my battery drains 1% per minute
I'm on T-Mobile and their "My Device" app will let you know if you need to replace the battery or not. Give it a try.

Are you running an ICS ROM? They seem to be so efficient at everything else that the screen is the major battery sucker. I've played PSX4Droid for a couple hours at a time, and it barely gets above 10% usage.
I run 2.3.4 virtuous unity. I can make it 24 hours before I charge it.
But the screen is the highest user of battery.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
2.3.4 GB here but i honestly say the games and watching videos takes a toll on battery the most.
I used to have awful battery life on ICS and was able to narrow it down to the amazon app store....using like 35% battery.<--disappointing amazon! After uninstalling that I can get about 2-3 hours of screen time. If you're having terrible battery life after flashing a new rom you could try caliberating your battery. I use battery caliberation. When my battery is fully charged I run it, let it drain all the way down then charge it back up. There are probably other caliberation apps out there...or you could delete the battery stats from your recovery. Hope this helps.
edit: just noticed you're talking about Gingerbread, my bad, kinda skimmed over that Caliberating your battery could still help though.
