Hi all, after 2 years of modding my HD2 with wm6.5, wp7 and tons of android builds, I'm upgrading to a sensation. I've read a lot of the threads but it seems less straight forward to hack this phone. I think i understand it, is s-off like flashing the bootloader so i can root it?

Hi,
I'm not sure which threads you have read, but THIS THREAD will take you through the four stages to get your phone ready to install any custom ROM.
That's a lot of stuff to do just to hack my phone, i remember it being so much easier. I need a bit of help, I have just moved house and dont have broadband. I can get all the downloads whilst at work but no connection at home to the revolution site. Is there any other way of getting s-off without a live internet connection?

Hi,
It seems like a lot, but it is no more than you did for the hd2.
I cannot see a way round the live connection. Revolution has to check the code it gives you.
You might have to wait till you get your broadband.
I feel so restricted with an unrooted orange branded phone.
Panic over, I had everything sdk and sync wise already from doing the hd2, I then got onto the web using usb tethering and after that everything is s-off, rooted, cwr and revolution HD rom installed. Im back in the game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks to all involved, I and many others went from a handset incapable of delivering texts (sent to outbox!!) to the best phone (boy's toy) ever.
I followed a similar road to the above post. However I ended up with Tween's cm7 with Doriamnx's kernal. Loved the tablet tweeks as buttons were already replaced twice, and the cm7 advanced setings.
Can or will anyone make an educated guess to when I could get the sensation(xe) to this level of usability with cm7 or Senseless build.

Hi,
I take it you have not got a Sensation yet.
CM7 is still experimental and not fully developed .
ARHD,which I'm on,does have a senseless version,which people rate.
So there is hope for you yet.

um, you shoud've bought the SGSII if you wanted to take better photos than the HD2 ; ) Only kidding, well, sort of. So far for me the biggest disappointment of the Sensation is the camera, especially indoors. It takes great macro shots in low light (even pitch black), but every other indoor shot I've taken has soooo much noise in it, even in well lit rooms. I'm not that impressed with photos taken outside either - doesn't feel like that much of a step up from the Leo to me, especially given the two year difference between them. Build quality, or perhaps quality of design is behind the Leo too. I've had to put four small pieces of Blu-tack inside to stop the creaking, LOL.
I'm still really enjoying it though.
Can either of you fellow Sensation Noobs see Nova 2 or Shadowgun in the Android Market? I can't. Via the web I just get an error saying my device is incompatible even though I know they'll run.
I got shadowgun from another market

Yes, but what malware did it come with? I'd rather just buy it from the main Android Market and be done with it to be honest. Well, if I could!

I've reviewed some of the ROM comments and browsed around on the net but can't seem to come to a conclusion on if I should root my device or not. I had a T-mobile G2 before and it was rooted. I loved testing out other roms and finding ones that works best as well as obviously the boosts in speeds.
The Sensation to me feels more complete and aside from some useless apps and the occasional glitchy things that happen with it I'm pretty satisfied overall.
Can anyone provide some positive user experiences with rooting their devices or if some of the roms correct some of the known issues with the Sensation reliable without causing other issues lol?
I'm really up in the air about this and can't decide, what do you guys think?
I rooted my sensation just Cos I did the same to my old x10 mini, I found rooting it was easy following the guide on here and flashing new roms is easy too, all I can suggest is that you read the instructions, try different roms to see which one works for you and don't forget that rooting voids your warranty

When flashing custom roms are you losing all installed apps each time and finding you need to restore via titanium? I ask because I've seen threads say you do and don't lose your installed apps and data.

Heyya,
I'm pretty new here and my experience with android devices was 0 up to three weeks ago when i decided to buy the sensation. I then stumbled upon XDA dev forum and now i'm hooked .
I decided to root and flash a custom rom three days after getting the phone... as far as eye candy goes Sense is brilliant but the functionality is 0.
The whole process of installing clockwork, perm rooting and flashing a custom rom took exactly twenty minutes and was no hassle at all.
At the moment i run P3d Neon-No Sense and the phone is a whole lot better. Battery life is double, RAM consumption is 1/2 and overall the performance is great.
So... my advice... root and flash away!
Thanks jeryko that's the kinda thing I was looking to hear. The sensations touch screen is the only reason I'm Leary about voiding the warrenty with rooting. If you unroot the device can they still tell?
I love sense I think it integrates things nicely and visually (with the exception of a few minor things) and gives a way more polished premium feel to devices. However as stated above it does bog down the phone a bit...even with the dual core. HTC really should have added 1gb of ram I think. Overall though my phones not slow just sometimes a little stutter here and there.

ive rooted my sensation, well i at least i did / was rooted before the update came out. to be honest i haven't seen any reason to reroot. i still have a unlocked boot loader but the urge to root and flash roms isnt really there for me yet. this is probably because i am happy with sense 3.0 and the phone doesnt lag for me at all after the latest update. the only real thing that will probably get me to root again is when a good aosp rom releases or CM7. i really miss having then bluetooth capabilities of a stock aosp rom
No problem. Well... the sensation has it's drawbacks but price/quality it's definitely worth the money.
About the warranty issue... can't really tell you... I've read on the forum that you can Switch back to stock rom and kernel and S-ON again but the procedure (for S-ON) is a bit risky and frankly i have no clue if after you go through all that there's any way of telling that the phone has been tampered with... you'll have to ask the older and wiser folks around here for a knowledgeable answer.
Root it, stop delaying the inevitable.

And that's why I don't regret going s-off and flashing custom ROMs. Root just comes with the territory.
Funny thing, I went custom on my Sensation within the first week while I left my wife's stock. Fast forward three weeks later, I was pretty satisfied with the speed and stability on my phone. I pick up my wife's phone and unlock it to surf the net. First thing that happens? Random restart and back to the HTC splash screen. Really?? I'd totally forgotten about the random restarts and choppy home screen scrolling. Ended up s-offing that thing and flashing a custom ROM that same night. She hasn't complained about her phone since.
I'm so tempted....you guys are evil lol Seriously though the only thing holding me back is the warrenty being voided. I didn't care so much with my G2(that thing was the most reliable phone ever) but the sensation is still new and I'm skeptical about how long the hardware will keep up and all. My biggest complaint would be the volume on some things ...everything else works great though except an occasional lack of response until I lock and unlock the phone...which is rare.

The ONLY reason I rooted was to remove the apps I don't want to use. I'm running my own ROM which is a basic version of 1.45.401.2 with all the crap I don't want removed. If it didn't have the **** on the ROM in the first place I probably wouldn't have bothered to root it

Agreed....
I unlocked the bootloader as soon as I could and started loading custom ROMs. I've been running the P3D ROM (Sense version) for a few weeks now, and it's doubled my battery life plus it's faster. My brother has his Sensation still S-ON stock (latest OTA update) and we compared it side by side and we both agreed mine is noticeably faster. I also like the blue neon theme with that ROM.
Even that particular ROM aside, I've had generally better battery life with anything other than the stock ROM. That alone is enough reason to do it IMO.

Ok I know that I am a noob to rooting and installing roms. Currently I am on my second one Android Revolution HD™ 3.0.3. Rooting it was the best thing I've done. i wish I would have gotten the balls to root years ago!
Hi, I know I asked earlier but when you flash a new Rom do you lose all your apps and data? I see many people flashing new roms weekly and daily and am just wondering how you deal with all your apps and data. I can't imagine everyone starting from scratch each time. I know titanium can do a batch restore, is that what everyone does? (Sorry for my noobish behavior in this thread.)

I was thinking about selling my Vibrant and buying a G2x, but the dev section seems to be pretty dead. Any reason why wasnt this CMs personal phone at one time?
I think part of it is LG's quick memory regarding it. Quick as in quick to forget it, and Nvidia won't release driver source so devs are forced to reuse the 2.3.3 release in order to get 100% functionality.

Some devs don't post updates on xda. Some of them give updatea via twitter or other sites. But it's not dead.

Does anyone know if they will ever release new drivers? So basically until they do which is most likely never this phone has been as updated as possible? I noticed CM7 is still updating which means 2.3.6 so is there much chance of ICS? Finally who are some good people to follow on twitter for good roms? Thanks a ton guys!
due to overall problems
I believe there were many more developers that planned on developing for the g2x and bought the device to do so as i did.
But with so may problems at the start i just didnt want to even attempt to rom for this device and be blamed when the phone self destructed. after much tampering it is running pretty well but i just dont trust the phone and im sure there are some others that didnt work on the G2X for the same reason. There are some very good options out there and talented people that are working on the G2x. so dont be afraid due to low quanity because there is some high quality work done.
Not sure it will grow much since its been obvious that tmobile and lg's fix for the phone is to shutup until it goes away. But the roms have the phone running pretty well and you wont be disapointed, But i would wait until oct 12th and get the hercules(even without the samsung chip) will be a killer phone or the HTC coming out the same day with similar specs.
This phone works fabulously with CyanogenMod, EXCEPT that bluetooth audio (to a wireless headset or whatever) doesn't work.
Other than that, EVEYRYTHING works. Love this phone.
Well that's disappointing to hear that I probably will never see ICS running on this device. It's a very capable device and the fact that LG refuses to update makes me want to put them in the same category as Viewsonic (unfortunately I also bought the g-tablet).

will be the best hope to get icecream running. if they do so than other rommers will also follow suite. but cm leads the way on drivers and such for most roms. so if they dont do it ussually noone does. But i wouldnt expect to see anything from LG, they have not shown anything in the way of skill or care to put out updates for their devices.
Because there ate stable ROMs out there and you can only do so much. Other lively dev sections ate deceiving - 20 variations of the stock ROM with different wallpapers and start up screens does not mean a lot of development for the phone.

One of the basic things I had to decide on was whether I wanted the LG camera app with an OTA based rom or all the fancy-ness of a CM7 based rom. Now I'm at the point where I just group OTA or CM7 and go from there.

I was running this rom up until 5 minutes ago... I just reflashed fitsnuglys 9/27 kang... Dont get me wrong the 2.3.3 roms are great... There's just something about the cm7 and the kangs that I like... There's always something new added to them and for me they seem to make my phone run better ... Sure there's no LG camera but there's plenty of camera market apps..
Yeah, I see updates for ROMs pretty often, every 5-10days, that's a good release period, and if you want to use a ROM that is constantly being developed just run CM7, a lot of people say it's not good with battery but if you flash one of morfics kernels you will have great battery life. Some people run into issues with it but if you wipe everything you should be fine. Faux's AOSP Rom+Kernel run great together also.
While development might have slowed down a bit for this phone, there's still plenty of excellent devs and roms to choose from. I have always preferred faux's aosp rom/kernel combo for my daily stable/very reliable/great performing/battery life.
Now if you want to see no development look no further then the mytouch4g slide thread. That's just sad cuz even the og mt4g has tons of devs working on it and its still a great phone.

Alright, so in the past I've owned an HTC HD2 that I was able to Android on by stumbling though the posts here, a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant that I was able to root, albeit slowly and clumsily, and also my fiancee's old HTC Mytouch 3G. It has seemed though that after rooting and flashing a custom ROM on each phone, a few months later, problems begin to arise. The phone will start lagging, freezing, crashing, etc. It becomes unresponsive at times, won't receive or send calls/messages at times, etc. Now, I readily admit that this is most likely my fault due to my inexperience, so this raises my next question.
Should I attempt to go S-off and what not with my Sensation? Is it worth the risk? Could someone walk me though it, like leading the blind lol, as where to I won't make any mistakes?
A little background, I love my Sensation, and I really like the Sense 3.0 UI, though some of the widgets not updating, such as Friend Stream and News, is really rather aggravating.
So, with my history of rooted/custom ROM phones going bad, and my being mostly satisfied with my Sensation, should I bother going S-Off and rooting? Will I notice a great improvement in performance? Do any ROMs out there offer a version of Sense 3.0?
Thanks for you help, it is greatly appreciated,
Signed,
A lost noob
The whole process is easier than the hd2. It's a must for me there are plenty of roms and they all will improve the speed of your device
You can overclock your cpu to 1.5 like the processor was intended to be used. Go in to the development thread and there's a noob guide in stickies, read it a few times and go for it its easy and safe if you follow every step.
Roms are installed from sd via cwm like on the hd2

Be careful, as I almost rooted my phone two months ago when ROM's started flying around this forum. Thankfully I waited, since I am now on my third replacement Sensation because they have all developed dust under the screen. If you root it, dont expect to be able to return it. Apart from Revolutionary not working for three times and CWM not installing through Revolutionary everything went fine. If something doesn't work as expected just google it - there is someone out there with the same problem.
I tried a few ROMs and kernels out there and i can strongly recommend Bulletproof due to its stability. The best about it is that it's stock based (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1214023).
It will work even better with the Bricked Kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668) and system tuner of the market. I am using the new 1.2.5 test-kernel (it's unbelievable fast).
There is only a issue with the camera causing an fc. But you can fix it using the sense 3.5 hack from faux: http://www.multiupload.com/7BIGBQTDLF

Yeah, hopefully I don't run into any problems, I'll end up bricking my phone if I do...
As for the ROM, I've been strongly considering Android Revolution HD.
I have never rooted a phone before now. The process was so simple, if you follow the guide correctly. I'm on Android Revolution HD 3.6.2 and loving it. Very fast a stable, no issues or force closing.
Just remember to back up everything.
Just a few questions guys. Sorry if it has been discussed before. But, I'm coming from an HD2 and am thinking about getting an AT&T Inspire. Since the Inspire is a native Android device, it probably doesn't suffer the same bugs that the HD2 did when it has Android on it does it? In particular when you ran a Sense 3 rom on it, you would have trouble with graphic glitches. I'm guessing you don't have that problem with this phone? Is there some other known bugs that you face when you run a custom rom on the Inspire? I loved my HD2 so much that I had to get a comparable newer model of phone. I just felt it was time to get an actual Android native phone because of the various issues that I ran into. Also, if I root the Inspire will I be able to get rid of the AT&T bloatware if I choose to stick with the stock rom? I was running my HD2 on AT&T so I could only get EDGE with it and I got tired of the slow internet when I was not in a wifi area. Thanks for your answers!

If you're partial to CM7 based roms, not sure if this is a problem across the board for all devices, but at least on the Inspire CM7 roms don't like to read your SIM card, so back up your contacts to gmail and sync if you want to use a CM7 ROM.
I've used ARHD, Bindroid and Absolution. I have tried just about every rom there is on the Inspire but these 3 seem to be the most stable, a lot of support and just an overall great time. This isn't to say the other roms out there are terrible, I just fancy these and as anyone will tell you, different strokes for different folks. Your best bet, if you do get the Inspire, try all the roms out and see what best fits you, what minor bugs you can deal with and ones you can't. You'll find out very quickly what you're willing to live with and what you're willing to do without! Each ROM is not totally bugless, each have their share of little bugs and honestly the devs do a great job at fixing them and keeping their respective ROMs up to date (or at least the ones I have mentioned, again this isn't to say the other roms don't..I just use these consistently and can only attest to what they do). There use to be an audio issue but many roms have since fixed that. If you do get an inspire, the Desire HD is the same model phone pretty much and thus many of those roms can be flashed onto our device, if you take that route for whatever reason, you'll need to find the audio fix.
Thanks for the information. I think I will stick to the Inspire roms instead of the DHD ones. I'm a bit more partial to the Sense roms than the vanilla ones. I really like Sense. Yeah, I found that out with the HD2 running android. You had to try several roms out to see which one had the fewest most tolerable bugs. As far as roms not wanting to read the sim card, I always have a backup of my contacts on gmail. I thought it was convenient when I flashed a rom and signed in with my google account it would sync them all back to the phone.

No problem! I'm partial to sense roms as well but every now and then my CM7 inner child wants to have some fun. I typically keep to Bindroid (releases aren't as frequent and the following is small but man do they put out a really really stable rom). ARHD is another sense favorite of mine, also very stable, great development and a lot of mods/themes/add-ons. I use Absolution for my CM7 fix...again, great development, friendly group over there too!
Cool, I will be sure and check those out.
I also noticed with this phone you don't need to partition your nand everytime you switch out a rom. As a matter of fact you don't do that at all. That is a plus!!

Simple answer is no. There is no rom that is like that. A search of the available roms would have told you this.

Hey guys I have never owned a tablet before, and finally picked up a tf101 with keyboard for a sweet price on CL.. and I want to give this tablet thing a real fair shot. That being said, I have tinkered around with android cellphones for a while, Im not a 100% noob but not as clever as most of you guys.
anyways I want to cut down on the amount of reading to do and boy there is a bunch , its the same song for every device/vehicle I buy, Purchase product, then spend the next couple months reading your brains off on a forum related to the product. (need to cut down on the reading... gf always on my case lol)
What are the most popular mods, accessories , settings (I will check into all the various kernals and Roms myself) apps. What are some life changing functions I can perform with the tf101 that would make me wish I got into tablets a lot sooner?
pretty much, I like the device and it looks real sleek and cool... just not sure what to do with it now , lol.
thanks in advance
Must have for me - Root - install custom rom - install kernel.
My PERI tool makes this a one-click from latest stock. I highly recommend you skip all the issues people have with stock and go straight to a great rom like ARHD, AOKP, or Megatron. :]
Other - counterstrike mobile, yes
This can be tough to answer because Android, unlike granny smith, has many things to read about and tinker with. I have had the tab for a while and tried numerous different roms and kernels. Each have slightly different responses and it depends on your tinkering desire.
I push my tab to the limits and try to do everything it wasn't originally designed for. Unfortunately....a lot of reading.
At any rate, my life changing functions were very quick access to RDP and VNC to home computers. I can also view my home security video cameras from the tab.
SSH to my phone is another plus for me.
I'm still contemplating attempting to install Linux on the tab as well.

I have it installed in an image loop and up and running fine on my B80 SBK2. It is slow and doesn't have any sound and I can't figure out what to do next in terms of getting a decent speed from it because there is pretty much no information out there other than getting it running. I know decent speed is possible because I had a WebTop phone.

haha, yeah I know what you mean... read read read, I should start hiring a forum assistant to scour message boards for me
anyways , I couldnt resist and already started reading and have rooted and installed rom... gonna try out some new kernals
but my main issue right now is ad-hoc.. Im trying to figure out if there is actually a real fix for it, but its all pretty confusing
I just made this thread regarding it

Tell me more on your tether issue. I tether the tf to my phone using built in tether function through the aopk rom. The tablet picks it up just fine. There is a lot of confusion between adhoc and infrastructure mode also but there are a lot of articles on the subject.
Define what you want to do and what way you want the data to flow would help out for a better answer I think.

hey tom, I think I have solved my problem, I applied the suplicant fix that was in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438297
and it has been working since, I havnt used it too much yet but so far so good
was that what you were going to suggest to me?
My phone is a rooted tmobile vibrant running tmobile web , I dont have a native tether app on this rom and I didnt want to mess with my phone much either. (been over a year since I installed a rom or even wiped, its getting too old for me to want to invest time into it)

I have heard this option many times but for quite some time ago when I was using Wifi tether for root users on the phone I had to select galaxy nexus cdma and netd master so the tablet would recognize.
Now things are becoming different such as the aopk rom and I use them on both the tf and my samsung fascinate. I stopped using the separate tether app since the built in function did all the same things.
I personally suggest a rom like this to make sure your phone and tablet can all peform the same functions.
Glad it worked for you though.
