Used Sensation.....Help please - HTC Sensation

Ok, I bought today a sensation from a guy, he told me he was the first owner, that he didn't rooted or anything....
I did a Data Factory Reset
When I was trying to root the phone I saw that its already S-off
Hboot: 1.17.0008
I checked for root access and its rooted.
Now I don't know what to do, I don't know if it has CMW recovery installed already. I'M NEW TO THE SENSATION, so I'm a lil lost here.
*it looks stock, like no Rom its installed on it. Also I don't see SuperUser on my apps

If you aren't sure just install clockworkmod recovery anyway. You wont hurt anything.

Who ever had it before could've uninstalled SU before selling it. You can download the super user app from the market.
Boot into recovery to see if it has clockworkmod
First go to your phones settings/power and uncheck fastboot. Then pull battery and replace. The hold volume down and the power button until device turns on into bootloader. There use volume down key to navigate to recovery. In that screen it will tell you if you have clockwork installed or what have you...
Hope this helped

[Q] Trying to root my HTC EVO 4G

I am trying to root my EVO. I once had it rooted and unrooted it...i think...with unrEVOked. I wanted to root the phone and install a custom rom again but I cant seem to get it to root.
I have tried unrEVOked(and followed all the easy steps to root on a forum....more then once), and once I got the initial screen were it sais to plug the phone in and make sure it has USBdebugging on, I do just that and nothing happens. so....
I tried to use Simple Root .1. Once again, found a forum on how to root with this program and followed the steps...more then once...and still no luck. With Simple Root I watched a video and in the video the prompt screen said that it was pushing a file to the phone and then it is suppose to go to the HBOOT screen....which does not happen on my phone, it skips that step and tells me to go to step 2, but I haven't completed step 1 yet....
I really dont know if me rooting the phone befor is causing this, but if anybody has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank
dizl.evo
If you're on the OTA gingerbread update then you won't be able to root.
I have not updated yet. It asked me to but i was about to root so didn't feel the need to update the HTC software.....
So you're not on 2.3? I don't have an evo, but the rroot process was pretty easy for me using unrevoked. USB debugging on, set to charge only. (Fastboot off, if that's an option in settings>power.)
when i first got the phone i rooted it with unrevoked and yea, it was easy....
But yes i actually am on 2.3.3.... Dont know if that is gingerbread or not...
here is my software info...
Android Version -2.3.3
Baseband Version -2.15.00.05.02
Kernel -2.6.35.10-g4e39384 [email protected] #1
Build number -4.22.651.2 CL60865 release-keys
Software number -4.22.651.2
Browser version -WebKit/533.1
PRI version -2.15_003
PRL Version -60680
Today, I randomly checked to see if there was a HTC update, and there was and it said that 2.3 (Gingerbread) 4.24.651.1 was available.....I dont know if any of that helps....
Can you get into recovery? What is the status of your hboot security?
Power off. Pull battery for 1 min. Hold volume down. Press power.
Report here if S on or S off please.
Try going into recovery.

HBOOT = s-off
as far as recovery, it shows a phone with a red triangle with an exclamation point.....
Good news! You are still rooted! (technicaly, S-off is not root, but just as good) Jump over to the EVO 4G forums and start reading! And asking questions here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=652
You can flash a recovery that will allow you to, in turn, flash whatever ROM you would like...
I suggest Amon-Ra recovery.
Good luck!
I'm kind of surprised that you were having problems with unrevoked. That is probably because you somehow upgraded to 2.3.3. Unrevoked used the initial exploit of rageagainstthecage, and this was blocked in 2.3.3. However, you obviously used unrevoked some time BEFORE you received 2.3.3. Either way, just reflash a recovery pc36img.zip version of Amon Ra found here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
then download a ROM, I suggest MikG or Synergy to the root of your SD card and flash via recovery.
THANKS lil_bono. i really appreciate your help...
Ok so i went to the HBOOT screen and clicked recovery and it failed....so is a flashrecovery different or am i going to still run into the same problem of it giving me that red triangle??
Youre welcome. Yes. Flashed recovery can be of different types and is what you need. It will have locally packaged commands instead of the stock adb connection only. Head over to the EVO forums and start searching and reading.

A little bit of help please

So I just got my sensation today from a friend.
It used to be rooted, but he said he unrooted it.
I just checked hboot and it says at the top "unlock" and s-off.
But I do not have root privileges .
A little help trying to figure out what's going on please

So how do u know ur device is not rooted?
If it says s-off, you're pretty much good to go on installing a custom ROM.
Is there a custom recovery installed? That will be the other thing you'd need.
As far as the ROM you're already using, you can install a non rooted ROM on an s-off phone.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
Rooted means the ROM is rooted.
S-Off means the phone itself is 'rooted' (I'm mixing up terminology here to make the explanation simple.)
So you have a phone that you can do anything to. If you install a custom ROM the ROM itself will be rooted, meaning it'll come with Superuser and full root access to the ROM files.
If you have a non rooted ROM on the phone now, you will only be able to flash a new ROM via recovery since you won't be able to run an app like ClockworkMod from the non rooted ROM. But that's no big deal. It just means you'll have to download the ROM you want, copy it to the SD card, and install it via the very easy to use recovery module. And I'd bet heavily that the recovery version on your phone is ClockworkMod and not the stock, so it'll be super easy.
If not, there are still yet other options.
Ok that makes sense.
I just double checked and I'm currently not rooted.
I booted into recovery and I'm current using

You are golden.
4ext is a recovery that will let you flash ROMs. With S=Off you can flash most anything you like. If you want to flash an ICS ROM you'll have to upgrade the firmware first (unless it's already been done.)
There are easy to follow guides in the forum on how to do that. Pay attention to the parts about being SuperCID first (It's easy. Just pay attention to it)
For a regular Gingerbread ROM just download the one you want, put it on the SD Card, enter 4ext recovery and flash it. Should take about 2 minutes to set up and about 10 minutes to install the customer ROM after you start the recovery process (10 minutes of the ROM loading. Not 10 minutes of you doing anything. You can go eat a sandwich while the recovery installs the ROM)
If you need any assistance with using 4ext ask for it. (I've never used it so I can't talk you through it. I've only used clockwork) There are plenty of people here who know exactly what the step by step action is to make sure you get it right.

It sounds like you don't have a ROM loaded. The same thing happened to me after I upgraded the firmware. (Which has been done to your phone based on the info you provided) The firmware worked, but it had no ROM to boot into.
A quick re flashing of the ROM through the recovery and everything was back to normal.
With S-On though, I'm not sure you can flash a ROM. can't hurt to try it though. You're not going to make your problem worse.
I'm pretty sure I've already tried that, but I'll have a go again. Thanks for the help.

You need to flash the Clockwork recovery. You can do that by creating a PM58IMG.ZIP file with the clockwork recovery image and putting it on the root of your SD Card and running it as an update.
Or the much simpler way (Meaning fewer extra steps) is to use 4ext this one time to install a custom ROM, boot up into you rnow working phone and download ClockworkMod from the market and let ClockworkMod flash itself as the new recovery.
You might have to install Google Apps separately to get access to the market. That's dependent on the ROM. Some have it prepackaged. Some don't.
You won't have to go back and reinstall the ROM or anything after flashing the new recovery through the ClockworkMod app. Everything will work fine even though you installed it using 4ext.
Thanks a lot bro.
Question.
Can I now, just download clockwork from the market and flash it over the recovery I have now?

No. Not if the ROM you have installed isn't rooted.
Clockwork needs Superuser access to do anything. So it wouldn't be able to function without root.
There's nothing wrong with 4ext. It'll work just fine to boot up once even if you strongly prefer Clockwork.
(Also....not to be greedy, but I wouldn't complain if you hit the thanks button! )

On the plus side it's not worthless. It has value on eBay as a bricked device for parts.
Also, there's a thread around here somewhere called something like "Think you bricked your device? Check here first"
Check in there for other solutions. (That thread might be for the MyTouch 4G. I just switched phones so I've got all my threads between the forums mixed up in my head.)

Yeah that's a thing. Poor build quality at the factory.
From the poll that's up around here somewhere your odds of getting a dusty screen are about 50/50.
You can find that same thread in any forum for any HTC device on XDA. It's poor quality control by HTC.
You can tear the phone apart and wipe it down....but that obviously has a lot of other risks. Unless the dust is so bad it physically blocks the light from the screen from showing through....learn to like it.
Well I did the tear down and hinge fix for the g2.
Can you point me to the direction to what you have said.

That'll give you everything you want to know.
Skip the part about obtaining S-Off since you've already go that. Do the rest of the stuff. (Step 2 in that guide is how to get Clockwork recovery the PM58IMG way. It just doesn't call it Clockwork.)
The first thing you need to do though is pick which of the ROMs you want from the 900 threads in the development section.

Find your correct ruu, download ruu.exe to your pc, put your phone into fastboot mode, from h boot screen press power, you can then connect your phone to pc and run the ruu.exe as administrator. This will take you back to stock, s off, unrooted phone. Your phone will be restored and working. Then go read all of the stickies thoroughly so you understand what you are doing and what you need to do to successfully flash ROMS without the risk of bricking.

Sorry for being a noob, I don't quite get what you are saying.
Right now I'm pretty scared of bricking my phone, i've decided not to upgrade. Can I just insert the micro-sd card into my computer, then delete the firmware file and be done with it and have my phone back to normal????
Please help!!
Hi I'm learning about everything too. I can say I don't regret rooting and flashing custom Rom for a second! It can be intimidating at first, trust me I know but if you stick with it your reward will be great! Before you do anything read about it. What I did was even print out instructions so I didn't miss a step that helped me out a lot when flashing my first Rom. There's a lot to learn but everyone here is so helpful. Ask questions, read. Soon it becomes clearer and easier to understand. Its up to you if you wish not to proceed, but I just wanted to give you a pep talk and let you know you can do this! But never proceed unless you are comfortable with it. I wish you the best and good luck in what ever you decide to do.

The boot loop problem really scared the **** out of me. I guess i was being a little careless and didn't bother to check the CID of my phone, I thought I have Super CID already, but it is showing i have the incorrect CID.
I really want to experience ICS, even tho I am happy with my phone right now. I'm just so afraid of bricking my phone.
I guess I will do more homework on it before I do it.
Can someone answer my question in the previous post?
Thank you in advance

[Q] Setup Sensation before OTA update arrives

So from T-Mobile today, they announced that testing has been completed and everything should be all set and the update is coming out very soon.
So what I want to do is make sure everything on my phone checks out OK for the OTA update. Meaning, I want to make sure I have S-ON and stock recovery.
***I did not root my phone or install a custom ROM on it***
I unlocked the bootloader using the tool from htcdev.com. I don't know if I have the stock recovery still on my phone, I am assuming that I still do, but just for precaution I would like to make sure that I do.
What should I do to my phone to ensure that I get the OTA update? How would I go about doing that? Thanks a lot!
You'll be fine as long as you have stock recovery, you don't need to be s on or anything else. I updated to ota on my unbranded sensation and I was rooted and s off. I just flashed stock recovery in hboot before and it updated fine.
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
OK how would I know if I have stock recovery and only stock recovery on my phone? I'm a complete noob when it comes to this.
Turn the phone off, press and hold power and volume down til hboot screen appears, once in hboot use volume keys to navigate to 'recovery' then press power to select it and if you get a screen with a phone icon and no menu appears at the top of the screen then you have stock recovery installed. And you can only have 1 recovery installed at a time.
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
Ok now how would I be able to get out of the recovery page? Will I have to remove the battery? I don't recall there being a return or back button in HBOOT.
Also, how could I go about relocking my sensation?
Yeah remove battery or just press volume and up and hold and a menu should appear, reboot should be on there. Locking your bootloader is unnecessary, as long as you have stock recovery it will update and the update will relock the bootloader when it installs the updated one.
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
Ok thanks!

Thanks, and the problem is I don't have S-OFF since I didn't use Revolutionary. I used the HTC unlocker tool. I am waiting for the ICS update before I start messing around, though I probably won't because the only thing I would want to do is disable bloatware which I can do anyways.

What happens if I let T-Mobile push ICS to my rooted phone?

I've asked this question as part of another question in another thread, but never got an answer...
I have a T-Mobile Sensation 4G that's rooted and has an unlocked bootloader.
There is no custom ROM on it right now, it's still the original Android 2.3.4 with Sense 3.0.
When T-Mobile pushes out the ICS update. What happens to my phone if I allow it to load?
Will my phone still be rooted? Will the bootloader still be unlocked?
Or will my phone revert to a locked and unrooted state?
Or is there potential for damage?
I'd like the official ICS update because it will include a working T-Mobile Wifi calling app for ICS. But I would like to keep my phone rooted.
Thanks in advance for any answers and advice on this!

Are u s-off? By rooted do u mean with custom recovery an superuser installed?

If you are S-off or HTC Dev unlocked then no you will not go back S-on or be relocked.
You will lose root, but go to here for a guide on how to root the nee ICS ROM.
Now as far as if you being rooted there is some that say need to un root before updating. And there is some that say it does not matter. I am still trying to learn more about this myself, so to be safe I suggest you un root before you update.

+1 on that. I have a stock un-rooted backup just for that purpose. Nobody seems to have a definitive answer so it's better to be safe. IMHO, I don't think it would be an issue though.
no problem
i have done s off months ago with revolutionary
and yesterday i flashed an ruu with ics
after this i have a "locked" bootloader but i am still soff and i flashed an eng hboot for ics and all is working fine!
with or without the engeneering hboot

Its a complete load of BS that your phone won't get updates if its rooted. All you need is stock rom and stock recovery. To preserve your root use voodoo ota root keeper. Backup root before update, then as long as your s off, flash stock recovery in boot loader, reboot, get the update, flash an unlocked 3.32 firmware from development section firmware thread then flash a custom recovery in bootloader then restore root using the app and flash root tools from mikes stock rom thread in clockwork mod or 4ext which contains su binaries, busy box etc. Which should give you root back.

What happens if you are S-OFF? Do OTA updates check for S-OFF? All I have done is S-Off'ed my phone but not changed my stock ROM. Not rooted either.

S-off makes no difference either. The update will not check for it. All it looks for is modified rom or recovery.

Well I can promise you that my phone updated to ics from stock gb with root and I managed to restore it after the update. Its recovery that will stop it installing. This page holds tons of instructions on ota updates but halfway down it says that ONLY correct CID, Recovery and stock rom are needed.

But I'm just saying its possible, if anyone wants to try it then go ahead the information's all there but if your not confident that you know what your doing then try something else or unroot it.

I think its a few that scares people saying update broke there phone so they unroot and son but don't know there safer skipping update till devs get at it and keep clockwork but that's just me wont ever install stock bloat again

Well its hardly bloat, its a recovery, and its the only recovery that can apply official updates. And thats the only reason it would ever be used over clockworkmod or 4ext unless you wanted to stay 100% stock. But all custom recoveries stop an official update being installed that's why you need stock recovery if you wanna receive official updates.

last time i had an update was that htc watch app or whatever and i had to get my phone back to stock before i could update, im not that much of an advance user to know ways to keep root and all that during updates.
Just so I am clear as I am thinknig of just waiting for the official t-mobile update (using t-mobile brand phone but no on their network) now given my phone died recently after flashing ARHD and I am not sure if it's just hardware coincidence or something with the firmware or ROM.
So after I got my phone back from repair...I now have S-off, rooted, clockwork mod, and SuperCID. So if I want to just get the OTA update for ICS when it comes out...what do I need to do? Do you guys mean removing clockwork recovery? How do I put the old recovery back? And also, someone told me I need to change the CID back to the Tmobile one?
Hope to get some clarification here. thanks

Thanks...I read through that. Just a little confused about flashing the recovery...on one site..someone posted the "stock_recovery_ and "cwm_recovery"...are there only one version of "stock_recovery" or does it go by the brand of the phone? Is U.S. T-mobile recovery different than other HTC sensation recovery?

All stock recovery should be the same.

I read the instructions but am a little confused about one part. They talk about if I want to stay rooted after ICS update... I need to root the GB ROM first (done)...the flash recovery...change CID back to T-mobile...
Then run OTA update....then it talks about flashing custom recovery. But I thought it said the new HBOOT is locked so custom recovery is not possible. So how could one flash custom recovery after ICS update as suggested.
Also, regarding flashing stock recovery....on one of the links, there's a stock_PMG58IMG file....so it doesn't matter if mine is US-T mobile? I can just flash any stock recovery as there's only one?

If you're s-off then you can flash recovery with a locked bootloader.
