MODS DO NOT MOVE THIS THREAD OR I WILL REMAKE IT HERE. I'M SICK ON NOT GETTING ANY ANSWERS. AND THE ANSWERS I GET DO NOT WORK!!!!
HTC Dream (G1)
CM5.0.7-DS
Radio: 2.22.23.02
build:EPE54B
8GB SDcard [class4] (1Gb ext2/512Mb swap/rest FAT32)
70% of the time I have to reboot my phone before i can make a call, the phone says its calling and vibrates when someone answer but i can not hear them and they can not hear me, nor do i hear the phone ringing
something is killing my battery. a battery that should last all day will be dead in less then an hour and the back of the phone is hotter then ****. again rebooting fixes this
with 3 minute reboot times, REBOOTING MY PHONE 4-10 TIMES A DAY TO USE IT IS F*CKING UNACCEPTABLE. LIKE THE OTHER DAY WHEN I HAD PEOPLE BREAKING INTO MY HOUSE AND I'M TRYING TO CALL THE COPS WHILE GUNS ARE BEING POINTED AT EACHOTHER
i've posted in the Q&A, general help, and PM'ed CM and other with no help or answers other then format your sd card, just put the newest CM on there. why the hell should i upgrade to a new version when the problems are not addressed or fixed.

see the last line.
Try checking to see if the battery is the problem. Sometimes the G1 battery can get swollen or warped and could cause that problem. I was having the same issue last week and when I popped the back open, the battery was sticking out, looking like Larry Holmes, flabby and sick.
If that's not the issue, make sure you have Danger SPL installed correctly and an updated radio. You can check what versions you have installed by checking your Fastboot.
If none of that helps, do a full wipe and reflash the ROM I guess.
Hope this helps.

have you tried fast boot code:fastboot erase system -w then re flash ROM, if that does not work you should probably try cm 5.0.8 because they where a lot of fixes in that version
theres gotta be a reason your affected and no one else is..

secondly, your swap is WAY too high, turn it down to 24-32mb (i use 24mb) and set your swappiness to 10, if your using swap make sure compcache is disabled.
for safe measure compeletly reformat your sdcard, however if your using swap and it is a corrupt portion of the sdcard (since class 4 cards dont have wear leveling to my knowledge).
if your coming from another rom make sure you dont have dalvik-cache still on your ext partition
before installing the rom, use fastboot or the format options in clockworks recovery to format system (may as well format data too if your installing fresh) and flash cyanogenmod then gapps..
donno what else to tell ya, without swap or compcache cm is much for our memory starved g1's. if your a light user than compcache is fine. if your a power user you should use swap. (this way if your listening to pandora for example, and you get a txt message it wont close pandora)
otherwise i dont know what to tell you, im runing cm5.08 with a 24mb swap, 10 swappiness on a properly fat/ext/swap sdcard. i have some custom tweaks and a custom kernel and the bidi font fix and everything is smooth.

I would PM CM and tell him you will pay £300 for a version just for you.
You're doing something wrong and you want one of the guys here to do it all for you
Well I am sorry with a attitude like yours I don't htink you will get very far.
First off try another rom to see if it's your phone then move forward.

First of all, caps and exclamation points do nothing to help you in this case. Calm down, take a few deep breaths, and realize that you are complaining about bugs in an outdated version of a ROM. Also, no one is forcing you to flash any ROM at all, so if it's that much of an issue, go back to stock. I wouldn't recommend recreating threads if this thread gets closed or moved, because that will only serve to piss off the mods who have the power to pretty much do whatever they want. Get a grip, upgrade to the latest version of cyan, and if you still have issues, look in the issue tracker, search the forums, and you will find what you are looking for. Good day.
I had strange problems in the past with my radio (not reachable after a while): what solved mine:
I've reflashed the original RC7 (android 1.0), rooted, flashed radio and spl and then recovery. Did then fastboot:
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
reboot & flash any rom you like.
Succes!
btw: I think you should move to CM6 nightly too after installing android 1.0 (much better and (3rd party) things are up to date), shouldn't give any problems at all (but do a fastboot erase system -w when upgrading from 5.x).

If you're still not satisfied, flash back to stock Android, or buy an iPhone, and stay the hell away from our forums. If you threaten the mods, "If you move this thread I'll just remake it," I think they should delete this thread and ban you. The CM team has put a tremendous amount of work into an excellent and highly stable ROM that thousands use without issue. If you screw it up, many people will help you as much as they can, but you should show a little respect for all the work so many people have done for you, for free.

If you need your phone so bad, don't mess with it especially if you're not smart enough to do it an figure things out without making a big fuss over things. You should have known what you were dealing with and the possible consequences of rooting your phone as it is with any device that you have administrative permissions on.
You are a very nice member of XDA.

If you have people in your house, Mexican or otherwise (racist much?), why do you have time to whine on our forum? Seriously, if your phone is screwed up, it's because you screwed it up, so you can only be pissed at yourself. If you're not smart enough to figure it out, even with help, then give up on modding your phone and stick to stock. CyanogenMod comes with absolutely no warranty or support, and this is made extremely clear before you flash it. So... if you're not happy with the answers you're getting, then tough ****. You have no right to be mad if it doesn't work, whether it causes you to lose your job, become impotent, or be shot by Mexicans. That's what you accept when you use this software. Now deal with it.

Hello,
i've found that somewhere in our ancient G1's is hidden partition where's stored stock firmware with stock radio, SPL and recovery. I wasn't using it and had it off about 2 months. When I've brought it back to life i was very surprised that it was derooted, stock. I had to do it again, everything. So it means that somewhere has to be partition with it. I think this could save bricked phones and it could be used as extended phone memory. Just an idea..
you sure its the same G1?
Maybe its your brother/sisters one

You'd be the first person it has happened to.
I see two options;
1. you're right and there's said "rootkit", it would bridge the gap between trout and sapphire boards by possibly bringing trout storage capacity closer to that of sapphire because, otherwise, they're identical.
2. the rooted build you were using was possibly using a build fingerprint that allowed the updater program to identify it as a legitimate device. if the new boot took longer than expected (or if for any reason during those two months the phone was turned on by somebody else without your knowledge and given access to a network) then there's the possibility that an OTA update was delivered and the phone updated, but I believe those updates require confirmation (unfortunately, my ADP1 doesn't receive OTAs, so I wouldn't know how the process works).
I'm more inclined to believe that the second option is the most likely, but the first option sounds tempting. Has anybody done a close inspection of the trout and sapphire boards? how different are they inside? is the nand inside the msm chip or outside on the pcb? if the nand is inside the msm, then it would make very little sense for qualcomm to make only one chip that was used exclusively for only the htc dream (is there any other device that uses msm7201A AND has only 256 MB internal storage?) and make an exactly identical one for wider use...
====edit====
After some wikipideaing, found out that there's only one another HTC device that uses the same layout as the dream, the touch diamond (msm7201A AND 256 nand). The majority of MSM7201As all have the sapphire's 512 nand. Oh, well, it was worth a shot.

the question is why do you think there is a hidden partition
and I do hope you are not getting mixed up with French cache
we all know about cache
And where could be whole stock firmware stored if it isn't in partition which is hidden for us? BTW it has to be in ready-to-use state, something like a BART backup, the partition must be big enough.
I think that if we knew about it, we were using it now, in example as extension of phone memory. Or as i said to recover bricked phones. It just happened that way. If you have other phone you could use instead, try to power off your G1 for same time.
You wanted tech specs - i dunno what exactly you want, it's just general G1, not ADP, stock version was 1.5. And even if i had last SPL, radio, AmonRa's recovery, after two months off, everything was stock, 1.5. I tried to start recovery - stock,.. i had to do whole rooting process again.
BTW - what's French cache?

It was like that even before I rooted. I noticed it but it didnt really phase me until recently. All my music/pics are on my card. I had to jump on HTCs site just to confirm that I was supposed to have 8gb and wasnt remembering it wrong..lol. But any insite to this would be helpful. Again thanks in advance for any help
I do believe it has 8gb but 3.2 gb of it is partitioned...
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I believe HTC partitioned it in a way that only 4GB of the 8GB eMMC is usable (the other 4GB is out of reach, it seems), and within that 4GB, you only get about 2.5GB or so user space, with the others reserved for the system.
And since it's one time only, we cannot reverse the effects of that partition.
Ya it is pretty ubsurd that you lose about 70% of your internal memory.
I do think it was smart to partition space for the system in excess of what is required, just to keep it stable.
Also, I imagine HTC had to put aside a hefty chunk of memory for HTC SENCE.
However, that seemed like way too much when I first encountered the problem myself.
So I e-mailed HTC who told me that the thunderbolt only has a 4GB eMMC under it's hood. That would make the numbers make sense because then the formatted space would be about 3.8 Gbs and that would mean only 1 gb was taken for the system.
why doesn't HTC or Verizon address the misprint claiming it has 8GB eMMC ?
that is a quesiton I can't answer.

This same question came up when the G2 came out and everyone was rasing holy hell about it.
Physically there is 8gb in the phone. However, if I remember correctly (you may need to Google it), the explaination was that because of the way Android uses memory, it is unable to use the extra memory properly. The only analogy that makes sense to me was like how in Windows, unless you set up your hard drive as NTFS, instead of FAT, you were unable to format a partition over 10mb.
Samsung got around it by showing the "extra" memory as another "partition" of sorts so the memory shows available.
So to make a long story short, the memory is there, but system limitations, along with some of the memory being used as backup cause you to only see the 4gbs.
At least that is the way I understand it. Maybe someone else may know more about it and can explain it better.
It has an 8G flash:
Code:
# fdisk -l /dev/block/mmcblk0
fdisk -l /dev/block/mmcblk0
Warning: deleting partitions after 60
Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0: 4487 MB, 4487905280 bytes
There's over 4G available as a flash device to the OS. I suspect the rest is where the radio code is stored, and is not visible to the Linux side.
Hey Guys,
I finally got my phone to work at a decent speed. Here are the things I did:
1. Used Apps2SD to move the apps from internal storage to SD Card. Wondering why this helped? As far as I understand the apps are run in RAM and internal storage is used for storing data and apks etc. RAM is freed up by Android as and when needed but freeing up internal storage doesn't give android more RAM.
2. Use Autorun Manager to prevent some apps from starting up and remaining in memory. Now this I understand because this gives more RAM to android and avoids unnecessary swapping when applications are started up.
3. Used 'SD Booster' to increase sd cache size to 8192Kb. This gave some initial benefits but later on it became very slow as usual.
Bottom line is I am still puzzled by Android memory and SD card management. I am pretty sure though process swapping in and out of memory is what caused my phone to slow down. My Samsung Droid Charge is supposed to have 512MB of RAM but most memory managers show only 374MB and 2 GB of internal storage and most tools show only 1.2GB. Why would this be? Am I missing something or should I use a different tool to analyze my memory.
Not sure about RAM but usually when u buy a hard drive the bigger the hard drive the lower the actual number of gigs. Maybe it is actually 1.2GB

1. This one must be a placebo effect because if anything moving apps to sd card will make the phone slower. Our internal memory has way higher i/o speeds (especially on ext4) than the measly class 2 sd.
2. This is usually not a good idea. The processes you "block" will actually still run but they will be insta-killed. They will keep trying to start up and will drain the battery.

Thats what I thought. Im no guru, but out of all the reading Ive done, they have all said that moving apps from the sdcard to internal speeds up things.
Im looking at ways to speed up my wife's droid charge. Shes been complaining about it and finally gave me the go on rooting and maybee ROMing. I would like to stick to stock if possible so she wont run into any problems but if I have to I will install a custom rom. Any links?
Nope this is no placebo effect. The phone has become very fast. There are several posts that say that moving the apps to sd card speeds up the phone. In fact of all the things this is what sped up my phone the most. Why else would app2sd be so popular? Read #4 on http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/b...lean-up-and-speed-up-your-android-smartphone/ .
To further speed up my phone I am trying to overclock. My phone is stable at 1.2GHz but at 1.3 GHz it reboots after some time. To make it stable at 1.3GHz should I increase the voltage at that frequency?

Read it again. That's only about getting extra app space on smaller-storage devices. They actually recommend against moving things you use frequently in your linked article.
I'm with the others. Any gains you're seeing from this are placebo. There's nothing inherently faster about external storage.

It has a total of 512MB RAM, and that is for everything, so the GPU and other such things have to take their share from the total pool. On the GB releases, that leaves us with 374MB. It's better than it used to be. On the Froyo releases, we only had 327MB to work with.

No, on a hard drive (or solid state drives or even SD/memory cards), what you buy is what you get. However, due to formatting, space reserved for backup/spare sectors, and what is considered a "gigabyte" to manufacturers vs consumers (1000 mb vs 1024 mb) you often end up with around 95% (probably off on that percentage) of the stated capacity. With RAM this is not the case, as that type of memory doesn't need formatting as its holding raw data with the computer making up its structure. And manufacturers of RAM are in agreement with consumers as to what a gig is.

This is the difference between a gigabyte and a gibibyte. Hard drives are usually advertised in gigabytes (literally 1 billion bytes), while most OSes use gibibytes (2^30 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes), since they do everything in "base 2", or binary. So an advertised 10GB hard drive has 10 billion bytes. Once you format the drive, the OS reports size in gibibytes, so you end up with:
Code:
10,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = ~9.31GiB
That's also why if you look on most hard drive packages, it says "formatted size may be different than advertised size" or something similar.
Just a random fact of the day. Feel free to ignore it.
On topic: I don't believe the giga/gibi (or in the case of phone RAM, mega/mebi) is the issue. 512MB converted to mebibytes is roughly 488MiB. I believe the Charge is a 512MB device with some of that memory reserved for OS/system-only purposes. I could be wrong on that, however, so if anyone could clarify that'd be great.
Edit: Could have sworn I read through all of the replies before replying myself. I guess I didn't because multiple people beat me on both points by a day. Sorry about that duplicate info.

The number one lesson I learned from buying this phone
Check the amount of run time memory before you buy a phone, especially if you have two companies like Verizon and Samsung loading bloatware. You were forced to root the phone and rid yourself of the bloatware, or not buy apps. I totally agree with the OP. He is 100% correct about the run time memory.
So I restored back to factory to get ready for another root. After the required Verizon and Samsung updates, hitting the clear memory button, I'm using 268MB of 373MB. Now I know the OS can swap, (because we love paging), but it really is ridiculous. I can't wait until March. Good luck everyone.

I couldn't understand what you are saying here. From what I understand you are saying that is that when you rooted your phone you had 512MB of memory but after you installed Verizon and Samsung updates it started saying you had 373MB. So is it that Samsung and Verizon updates are taking away about 147 MB of memory? What is going to happen in March?

No. Hardware wise the Charge has a total of 512 mb of RAM. The GPU and other hardware have to take from that pool, and the end result is that the Android OS has 373 MB of RAM to use. Verizon and Samsung bloatware and updates have no control over the hardware aspect, but the bloatware DOES utilize some ram while the phone is running (but does not take from that pool). March is probably when his upgrade is.

Hey Guys,
I finally got my phone to work at a decent speed.

What rom are you using? My son went swimming with his fascinate and I'm in the process of reviving my dc. I have compiled a few odds and ends and am mostly concerned about speed as well.

I am using Eclipse 1.4 with PBJ.
Ok so I can clearly see that my phone is becoming slow again. Not sure as to what it is related to. Though one thing that surprises me is that I overclocked the CPU to 1.2 GHz and set the governor as 'conservative' and sometimes even ' smartassv2' but it changes to 'ondemand' even though I never changed it to that value. Why is this happening?

Plugging the phone into a pc does that for some reason.
Sent from my handheld computer using electromagnetic radiation.
I have to agree that even though my phone was initially fast it slowed down considerably after some time. Frustrated I then backuped my phone using Titanium backup and installed Tweaked 2.2 Rom + PBJ. But this time I did the conversion to EXT4 and the phone has become super snappy and the fastest I have ever seen. However, I am not rejoicing right now because I have only installed some very necessary apps like navigation, yelp etc. Don't know if the phone will be come slow after I install more apps. On Seepu I can see for the first time my used memory is green and this probably is a major reason why the phone has speeded up. Another factor is the EXT4 conversion.
Infinity was known for slowing down over a short period of time. Tweaked 2.2 is quite a bit better. But running a Droid Charge for several days without rebooting it once in a while will cause it to slow down too. Just reboot when it starts slowing down. It should help.
Before I add any more apps I want to save this state of the phone so that I can go back to this if the performance degrades. What do I have to do for this? I used Titanium backup but I see that it saves app data and you have to install each individual app. What I want is to make one click and restore my phone back to the state it previously was. Should I do a nandroid backup
Does anyone own this phone?
I may have to get one and was just wondering if its a decent phone or not.
Things are tough right now and I don't think we are going to be able to pay our Verizon bill and I may have to just go spend the $40 at walmart to pick this up
Anyone had any success rooting this phone? How about CWM?
Please let me know.
Thanks!
I have one and root is possible, but the bootloader is locked because virgin mobile is bein stupid so cwm is out of the question so if u get one and root it be careful. I suggest a different carrier like at&t Go Phone

Just bought this phone a few days ago from amazon. I got it to replace a Kyocera Rise that I unceremoniously managed to boot loop when I went NUTS with checking too many options using the Pimp My ROM app. I nearly had that one for a year, so in a way, not a big loss for me, as I paid around $50 for the Event (incl. one day shipping).
I haven't activated the phone yet, but doing everything else on it seems to be all right. I've tested a couple of 3D games on it already: Temple Run 2, and Raging Thunder. Seems to run both fine, with only a tiny bit of lag on TR2. That can be improved once the phone is rooted. For now, I'm using my older, rooted LG Optimus V as my cell phone. I'll probably load a couple of benchmark apps to see how the phone holds up.
I loaded a full MP4 movie (rip from DVD) onto the Event to test 2D video.
The Event has about 1.2 GB of internal storage available, but the more important issue is the system RAM. It has 360 MB available out of 512 MB. That's only 3 MB more than the Rise... aack! But that can be improved upon once the thing's rooted. Ordered a case + screen protector for the Event earlier this morning... as soon as that arrives, I'll have the phone activated. Then I'll root it. I might skip out on doing any big fixes on this one. The main issue I had with the Rise anyway was with the wifi reception. It seems to be much better with the Event, from my own usage. Also, the cell phone signal bars seem to light up higher with the Event, so I shouldn't have too many problems with phone calls and texts. That usually means better 3G reception as well.
When this phone's rooted, these are the only fixes I'd do to it:
1. Editing the /system/lib/egl/egl.cfg file. Back up the original, name it egl.cfg.bak, then edit the original like this:
0 1 adreno200
# 0 0 libEGL
It looks something like that, but basically, put hashtags on the other lines to uncomment, or delete them. That fix enables the Event to use only the hardware drivers for 2D and 3D full time. Makes a huge difference in phone performance. Edit the permissions first, from r-- to rw- before editing the file. Once it's saved, put the permissions back to r--, then reboot. If you don't do this, the phone may boot loop!
2. Titanium Backup. This can backup all the apps on the phone, including some system apps. TB can be used to freeze unwanted apps as well. Some folks suggest uninstalling the bloatware, but I wouldn't do it, in case the phone gets a system update. Freezing should be fine.
3. Link2SD. This is essential if you want to free up space in internal storage. I use this to link any app that can't be installed to the SD card. It requires a second partition; I used FAT32 (2 GB partition) with the Rise, as it didn't have a custom ROM that had the ext4 modules. This will probably be the same for the Event. When formatting the SD card for this, make sure that the main partition that the phone reads upon booting has the boot and lba flags checked. I use gparted in Linux to partition and format SD cards
4. Greenify. This allows apps to hibernate when the phone is idle. It even hibernates some apps while you're using the phone, saving you some memory and CPU cycles. That can help save some battery power.
For now, I'm using Advanced Task Killer to maintain some free memory and help reduce unwanted CPU cycles. Green Power Premium cuts off the 3G/WiFi when the phone is idle. ATK kills apps, but I set it to work every two hours. That lets the phone do its memory tasks, while ATK kills the more stubborn apps (mostly the bloatware I don't use).
Hope that helps you out, and good luck.
Thanks for the input guys.

WOW that's some good input. Didn't want to get rid of this phone, now it doesn't look like I'll have to.

I got this phone for $20 at Walmart's Black Friday sale. For that price who could pass up Android 4.0x? Despite its apparent lower quality, I am quite pleased with its overall performance and the virtual keyboard, surprisingly, works better than a many other phones I have tried.
permission question
Hey all,Ive never messed with changing permissions,I have an Event and Im wonder ing when I open the permission page with root explorer it reads like this
READ WRITE EX
OWN X X
GROUP X
GLOBAL
In the post it says "from r-- to rw- before editing the file" Dopes this mean OWN has 1 X,GROUP has 2 X,and GLOBAL is blank correct? Then edit file and change to how it was in the begining? Thanks alot!!!!
Sorry to rehash and old thread but this one seemed to fit the best to what I am experiencing and what I'd like to ask.
I have owned this phone a little over 3 months now, switching from LG Optimus V, I have some grief from the day one.
First and foremost, it is very unstable. On the average, I have to hard reset it once a day, most of the time, more than just once. And when I say Hard Reset, I mean holding the power button down forever for the phone to reboot as the screen doesn't show anything. A few times, I went as far as removing the battery.
Question 1. I looked around hard and I didn't see any custom ROMs or any custom recovery modules, likes of clockwork. Am I missing something ?
My main concern was the ability of running FoxFi and as expected, it did not run on this one. So, I took the advie of some guys over at the android forums and loaded up poot to root it. It seems to have no problems with rooting. But afterwards, I have tried few hotspot apps and never been able to turn on this fjunctionality. I know the apps I chose required root access and I turned it on before starting the app, but nada...
Question 2. How can I get either FoxFi working on this thing ? Or short of it, how can I make any (suggestions welcome) WiFi hotspot app working with it ?
Thanks in advance

Yes I own a virgin mobile kyocera event and sucessfully rooted device with no problems at all. The process is much more simplified now than it was when I rooted, so lucky you And your going to want TWRP so you can use the recovery stored on SD if you do come across and bootloop or brick issues. Its worth the $30 I spent It's not the best by far, but its really pretty capable once rooted. Much better than I had expected. I hope I was of help to you, and if u decide to buy it and need help rooting I'm down.
