Confused about Canada devices - T-Mobile LG G2x

Why does Fido Canada have the P990 with official Gingerbread release while Wind and Videotron Canada have the P999 stuck on Froyo? What's up over there in Canada? Why different carriers have different versions of the hardware, and why are the Canadian P999s not getting the official Gingerbread update yet?

With Wind, it's more of a support issue. They're blaming LG:
http://community.windmobile.ca/windmobile/topics/is_gingerbread_even_coming_for_lg and http://community.windmobile.ca/windmobile/topics/will_wind_support_ota_update_to_gingerbread_2_3_for_lg_optimus_2x
but really, I think they just don't want to do support. It probably won't update anytime soon... Also Wind is a relatively new service provider compared to Fido, which is a subsidiary of Rogers, so they probably have more to work with.

I believe Wind didn't ask for the update, so the devices do not get it. No official support on LG's website either.

Fido uses different 3G frequences than WIND. Wind uses the same frequencies as T-Mobile in the US, so the G2x and Optimus 2X P999 are pretty much the same. The P990 has been updated just as its kin around the world have. It's just a model difference, not a carrier difference. Anything else is pure speculation.
What do you mean WIND didn't ask for the update?

I believe what he means is the following. If a device is released generic by LG, as it is in many countries, with no carrier branding then LG can rollout the update on their own as they recently finished updating all P990 devices worldwide to GB 2.3.4. If a carrier branded device the carrier has to agree to the update and approve it. And often, I'm not sure about LG, carriers have to pay for a major update (OS bump) on a per device basis. If the carrier is cheap and the manufacturer doesn't want to do their branded rom for free then no update gets done. Wind must be cheap and doesn't want to pay, or they don't want all the customer service calls (many, many, many) that an OTA update generates. If the Wind device stays stuck on FroYo it is definitely Wind's fault and not LG's.

Don't bother waiting for a official version from LG, you're unlikely to get what you want. The Wind and Videotron "O2x's" are actually debranded g2x's from tmo. Just flash a g2x rom and forget the official crap.

[Q] Is the LG G2X exactly LG P990?

I hope this is not an old post. I tried searching for it, but I couldn't find any info.
I bought LG P990 from Amazon... And the seller store sent me an LG G2X
Are the both exactly the same?
I don't think so since the Android release isn't the same for both devices.
And I hate the T-mobile logo!
The LG P990 is sold for $400 and the Unlocked G2X $340 - $380!!
Any comments or suggestions appreciated.
no they are not exactly the same they do have the same outer caseing i think because I have a ext batt that is for the O2x and it fits the G2x perfectly. The O2x has not gotten GB yet as far as I know. I also dont think you can use a p990 in the US without unlocking it and then you probally wont get the full use of the phone I think again I am not an expert but I know if you unlock an I phone and use it on TMO network wich is the same technology as ATT you dont get full data fetures or any data at all someone said. So I would imagin it would be the same for a overseas phone. Maybe someone who really knows can enlighten us.
I am not in USA. I am in Egypt. We have GSM here. I am not asking about the network capabilities, I want to know about the phone itself.
I found this on engadget.com:
"While the hardware remains the same elegant Tegra 2-infused slab of glass, metal and plastic, the software has been liberated from the shackles of LG's UI customizations into a serving of vanilla Froyo -- the exact same approach T-Mobile took when it introduced the Desire Z as the G2 without HTC's custom Sense skin last fall."
Hardware is the same software is different. Simple question simple answer.

The O2X has a custom LG UI similar to Samsung's UI. It has too many colors and I don't like it. The O2X also comes with way too many preinstalled system craplications. I am in Thailand and looked at the O2X in the stores here. I did not like the UI so I bought a G2X from the USA, sim unlocked it and using it here in Thailand. I much prefer the stock UI and wanted GB now also.
The hardware is not identical. The O2X supports 900, 2100 3G (at least as sold in Thailand), while the G2X supports only 1700, 2100 3G. Also the internal memory is partitioned differently so you cannot flash a ROM meant for the O2X on the G2X and vice versa. The exterior cosmetics is identical except for the T-Mobile logo on the front.
If you bought a P990 and you received a P999 you did not receive what you paid for. You should complain to Amazon and get a refund if it bothers you and you want only a P990. If you don't mind and you have 2100 3G where you are then you can keep it and use it. Due to the vanilla Android, the G2X is a little better than the O2X in my opinion.
The seller store from Amazon called "abe-123" refuses to admit the mistake. They say it's the same phone, just different names. Although they have 2 different listing on Amazon for both G2X and P990 with 2 different prices!
The G2x is pretty much an LG Optimus 2X. I believe it's the same hardware, but they use different basebands, and the Optimus 2X has an FM Radio.

Different radio chips. If the same you could change the bands by flashing, which we cannot do. I have had other phones where you could change the radio code and get different bands. I believe if we swapped basebands on the G2X and O2X we would have a brick on our hands.

Complain to Amazon, not the seller. Amazon requires sellers to take back products if the buyer is unhappy. It is a requirement of selling on Amazon. If you complain to Amazon they will more than likely freeze the funds until the matter is settled.
I agree with the last poster you did not get what you ordered they are not the same you can get LG involved if you have to.

[Q] LG Thrive (P506) Rom Upgrade?

What's to stop me from trying to update with a Canadian or Israeli ROM for my LG Thrive? Is there that much of a difference between the phones abroad? I was at an Orange Store in Israel trying to get a SIM Card for my phone, which ultimately, they wouldn't sell me due to their insistence that I have an Israeli Identity Card and Bank Account or pay a refundable ₪ 2239 (about $ 600) when I can bring in both. While in the store, I saw the Optimus One, which more or less is just an internationalized version of the Thrive(?) like the Phoenix, which is just a monthly contract version of the PAYG Thrive. Anyway, has anyone tried using a different rom? LG, as I'm sure others know, have been a bit too slow in giving us updates for the phone, which is why I am willing to just go my own route. Lastly, I have heard that I can't upgrade to 4.0 because of the Thrive's Lackluster internals, and if true, what's the latest version of Android I can update to?

Canada-Telus Jellybean 4.3 Update

From Telus Customer Service team on Oct 28th 2013.
Our Data Team advised me that TELUS typically follows 'Verizon's' by 2-3 weeks after their launch of the 4.3 update; and Verizon is very close to their launch.
That said, I recommend that you check the TELUS site for our release going forward. http://mobility.telus.com/en/BC/Samsung-Galaxy-S4/
Should be a day before AT&T... at least that's the way the skyrocket/s3 updates were. We all know how speedy AT&T is at releasing updates and seems Canada loves those timelines.
All I want is the modem. Could care less about the rest as there are so many 4.3 updated ROMS available.
Would be nice if we were on the current android build before 4.4 is released... I doubt that will happen though

It would really be nice if the upgrade cycle follows close to Google release schedule for the flagship devices.
I only got the Samsung S4 else i would have waited out for N5

Looks like Samsung lost the plot on this one. Google ended up releasing 4.4 before Samsung could release 4.3 for S4 devices world wide.
Thumbs down for Samsung on this.
Samsung north america sucks
How is that the Samsung S3 in Europe gets Jelly Bean before S4 in North America
Looks like the North America market is not important enough for Samsung

In Europe is Samsung who is pushing the update, in the states is all up to att and other carriers.

Samsung should be pushing the update in North America, leave it to the phone owners from where they want to install the updates?
from Samsung link or their own phone carrier link.

thanks captain obvious! Samsung would if they could, but the north american cell companies, in an attempt to keep us under their thumb, want the last say in what content, options and monitoring software our phones provide/hinder us with, and therefore refuse to buy the cell phones without doing the updates themselves.

Then it is not our phones... It is their phones in our hands.
The cell carriers in Canada are just plain bad...
its not just canada, its the united states too... strike that. the u.s. (no offence) is worse. look at att requesting locked bootloaders on the S4 and other samsung devices now.... thats... just wrong.
the best thing you can do to stay updated is what you are doing here. run custom software. to stay the most "up-to-date" you will have to run ports of nexus roms, Ports of Touchwiz roms, or ASOP derivatives.
as im finding out, it looks like us canadian guys can flash any ATT rom, if we immediately flash a Tmobile kernel with the same android version number. Tmo device is almost the same and without locked bootloaders but lacks NFC but nfc has no dependencies on the kernel apparently.
the ridiculous part is having to wait on the modems to catch up with everyone else and not have to worry about stupid data drops using an i337m

V20 coming to Europe

http://www.notebookcheck.net/LG-V20-S-coming-soon-to-Europe.182980.0.html
The first handset to launch loaded with Android Nougat might soon reach Europe in a slightly updated form, since LG has filed for the V20 S trademark in the area.
This is promising!
Seems to be quite a few rumours floating around that it might be and EU version of the LG v34. Or they could do the normal thing LG do and just give us a LG v20 with last years CPU.
Talks about a 5.2" version. That would make it a different phone afaic

There is a small version available in japan, might be mod version for the european market, or as the rumor say, a updated version of the internation version of the V20.
From what I hear it is the V34 from Japan and will be the V20S in Europe.
I wished that it was also offered here in the U.S. as an unlocked version.
I'm sure it would sell well here...

No

No update yet on s3 classic 4g verizon model
Yep, probably like phones, carrier models are usually last since they have to get carrier approval on uodates.
