I hope this is not an old post. I tried searching for it, but I couldn't find any info.
I bought LG P990 from Amazon... And the seller store sent me an LG G2X
Are the both exactly the same?
I don't think so since the Android release isn't the same for both devices.
And I hate the T-mobile logo!
The LG P990 is sold for $400 and the Unlocked G2X $340 - $380!!
Any comments or suggestions appreciated.
no they are not exactly the same they do have the same outer caseing i think because I have a ext batt that is for the O2x and it fits the G2x perfectly. The O2x has not gotten GB yet as far as I know. I also dont think you can use a p990 in the US without unlocking it and then you probally wont get the full use of the phone I think again I am not an expert but I know if you unlock an I phone and use it on TMO network wich is the same technology as ATT you dont get full data fetures or any data at all someone said. So I would imagin it would be the same for a overseas phone. Maybe someone who really knows can enlighten us.
I am not in USA. I am in Egypt. We have GSM here. I am not asking about the network capabilities, I want to know about the phone itself.
I found this on engadget.com:
"While the hardware remains the same elegant Tegra 2-infused slab of glass, metal and plastic, the software has been liberated from the shackles of LG's UI customizations into a serving of vanilla Froyo -- the exact same approach T-Mobile took when it introduced the Desire Z as the G2 without HTC's custom Sense skin last fall."
Hardware is the same software is different. Simple question simple answer.

The O2X has a custom LG UI similar to Samsung's UI. It has too many colors and I don't like it. The O2X also comes with way too many preinstalled system craplications. I am in Thailand and looked at the O2X in the stores here. I did not like the UI so I bought a G2X from the USA, sim unlocked it and using it here in Thailand. I much prefer the stock UI and wanted GB now also.
The hardware is not identical. The O2X supports 900, 2100 3G (at least as sold in Thailand), while the G2X supports only 1700, 2100 3G. Also the internal memory is partitioned differently so you cannot flash a ROM meant for the O2X on the G2X and vice versa. The exterior cosmetics is identical except for the T-Mobile logo on the front.
If you bought a P990 and you received a P999 you did not receive what you paid for. You should complain to Amazon and get a refund if it bothers you and you want only a P990. If you don't mind and you have 2100 3G where you are then you can keep it and use it. Due to the vanilla Android, the G2X is a little better than the O2X in my opinion.
The seller store from Amazon called "abe-123" refuses to admit the mistake. They say it's the same phone, just different names. Although they have 2 different listing on Amazon for both G2X and P990 with 2 different prices!
The G2x is pretty much an LG Optimus 2X. I believe it's the same hardware, but they use different basebands, and the Optimus 2X has an FM Radio.

Different radio chips. If the same you could change the bands by flashing, which we cannot do. I have had other phones where you could change the radio code and get different bands. I believe if we swapped basebands on the G2X and O2X we would have a brick on our hands.

Complain to Amazon, not the seller. Amazon requires sellers to take back products if the buyer is unhappy. It is a requirement of selling on Amazon. If you complain to Amazon they will more than likely freeze the funds until the matter is settled.
I agree with the last poster you did not get what you ordered they are not the same you can get LG involved if you have to.

Hey so far i haven't been able to find myself an adequate android phone for my first smartphone purchase (I'm an android junky and dev, just never got around to buying one that fit my needs) However now there are a couple contenders on the market. They have to fit t-mobile frequencies (I live in canada, and the only good network is wind which is basically t-mobile) and can't have too many issues. So I've recently stumbled across the spec sheet for the Motorola Droid 2 Global edition and was wondering if it supported t-mobiles frequencies considering the huge amount of radios it already does have.
More than likely it will work. Its a GSM capable phone, soo...yeah. You should check out the Nexus One too, its older but its still hanging up there with all the newest phones.
Yah the nexus one was very interesting and it was the original dev phone, idk i'd rather just be closer to the cutting edge and that 1.2ghz proc plus hardware keyboard really entices me lol
Complete speculation here, but I'd be surprised if it has the 1700/AWS band for 3G. Most 'global' phones have some combination of 850/900/1900/2100. I sure hope it does have AWS though

I messed with a G2 the other day and it was great. Very solid build, excellent keyboard, vanilla Android... not to mention, it already has a massive developer base.
Thats good to hear i heard there were some sketchy things about the build quality of the hinges
I open and closed it several times and it seemed as solid as it needs to be. I think some people might just be too anal.
Hahahahahha Gee I hope i'm not one of those people cuz if i can't get my hands on a n unlocked Droid 2 Global thats my choice
Ha you can't go wrong either way. The Droid 2 is a tank. My only concerns with the Global would be how much compatibility it will have with D2/DX hacks and whether sbfs will be leaked. Development is much more sparse on these new Motos than HTCs like the G2.
Yah i've looked through the forums and htc's seem to attract a lot of dev interest, meh more room for me in the moto department then
I'm pretty sure it won't have AWS. USA/Canada are the only ones who use it, and they have CDMA networks. Why would Verizon need to roam on any AWS network?
According to leaked specs of the Droid Pro, it has UMTS 850/1900/2100
Since its specifications are very similar to the Droid 2 Global, I'm guessing (and hoping) it also has the same bands so that I have the option of buying it and using it on AT&T.
I don't know why they went with these bands for the Pro since Europe uses 900/2100 and the Pro is missing 900. I don't think 900 is very common though, and Australia uses 850MHz so that may be why.
Is it possible and recommendable to buy the prepaid Verizons droid 2 global instead of the full price one, so you save 150 dols, and then unlock it and use it with another GSM carrier outside the US? Or should I buy the ones that are for sale on ebay?

For T-Mobile 3g I would go for the My Touch 4g or the Samsung Vibrant or The Nexus One. The Nexus One is still cutting edge. I have a Nexus One and a Droid 2 Global and the 1.2 processor doesn't really feel different. The Droid 2 Global also has barley any support here and absolutely no roms. I Love my Nexus One and I think it is better than any other smart-phone iv seen. If you want a great phone with amazing support and roms I would go with the Nexus.
Droid 2 GLOBAL - unsuccessful ROOT!
I was able to get a pre-retail Droid 2 Global a few weeks ago.
I wanted to Root is and use the Sapphire ROM. So I tried every ROOT method I could find using my MAC = no avail!
Then I tried every ROOT method I could find using a PC = NO AVAIL! (1-2-3, One click, etc)
* The only thing that happened was the phone got real hot and the program got stuck at "searching for device" - & yes I downloaded the Motorola drivers and the updated SDK pack.
Any thoughts on this?
You need to run the root apps again consecutively not always does it work the first time and all of the apps do the same exploit and there have been Droid 2 Globals that have rooted you just need to stick with it. Also sometimes it helps to reboot your phone after a failed attempt. It just depends on the phone. I remember when root first came for the D2 and we didn't have apps we had to run all the commands from ADB and do it manually.
Still no dice to Root Droid 2 Global
I just got this:

I am going to give it a whirl after I get home from work tonight. Fingers crossed - if this doesn't work, I'm all set with trying to root this thing.

Be VERY careful!!! Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global ROM's are NOT compatible. If you flash Droid 2 rom on D2G, phone will not boot and as there is no SBF available yet, you are looking into expensive paperweight until SBF is released.
BTW - phone is rootable. But refrain from flashing anything before you have way to get out if phone gets bricked. You have been warned.
Thanks for the heads up...
After minimal research, I realized that.
My plan was to flash clockwork recovery? Do you think that won't work?
It will be hard, but I can endure waiting for a "GLOBAL" ROM -
Cheers,

Even if you have a D2 G clockwork regularly won't work because the D2 only has a bootstrapped recovery. I don't have a D2 G but the D2 G is based on the D2 and on the D2 you should only install things with koush's bootstrap. I believe flashing normal clockwork will brick your D2 G. I wouldn't flash anything though before the D2 G's sbf is out. Unless you don't mind an expensive paperweight until then.
For all D2 G owner's: read everyting you can about the way that things are done with the D2 so you will knw what you are doing when ROM's and things come for the D2 Global.

Since I live in the armpit of technology, NZ, I'm in the process of looking to source this phone abroad, just sold my desire HD for a great price here ( at least there is a benefit for living here -reselling value holds good) and was looking for the best place to buy the phone.
Boils down to US or UK.
If its the UK, then Clove.co.uk will be my first choice as they have done well by me before ( though they were expensive compared to the US , I had £ there, so used that first)
If I get the sensation 4G for vodafone here (2100 and 900MHz) am I likely to run into any issues.
or should I get it from the UK.
what are the differences between the models if any... can't find nowt anywhere comparing the models for any differences.... is it just a marketing difference ??
Damn those XDA videos are getting great !!!

not 100% sure but from the box shots I've seen of the released UK version and spy shots of the T-mobile US version, the only difference is in the 3G/UTMS frequency.
UK is 900/1700/2100
US is 1700/1900/2100

From what I understand T-Mobile is relatively good when it comes to bloatware. They have even released some phones with stock Android versus the version with the OEM's skin.
Not as good as the Vodafone version I'm guessing though and never as good as the sim-unlocked one but still I'm hoping it's not horrible.
I tend to get my phones from expansys.co.nz. However they don't have a price or availability yet.
1) Will there be a speed difference if used on Tmo US?
2) Will it be possible to flash the Rom from the Sensation 4G to the Sensation in the future for wifi calling?

Oh, so not true. Some of the problems the G2X (O2X) are experiencing are being attributed to some of the T-Mobile apps. And that was supposed to be a "vanilla Google" phone. Their version will have a proprietary Wi-Fi Calling app that will no doubt interfere with SIP on the phone. You'll also be dependent on T-Mobile for updates which will always be slower than HTC direct. If you're going to root the phone and load custom ROMs this is of course mute.

I would say get the g2x for USA connection-wise, although the o2x has more of a development base and we g2x'rs just get everything ported eventually to us. This line is pretty awesome (if you can deal with little quirk here and there). AS for what dev is better.... thats nonsense. Every dev has something to contribute and without most of them we wouldnt be were we are today with our phones.

The phone version you need depends on which cell service provider you have a plan with. The G2X and Optimus 2X (except for the Canadian Optimus 2X which is a G2X) work exclusively on different networks. First, decide which network you are going to sign up for then pick the appropriate phone version.
I agree with the above, but take into account what you want, and how much you have to spend. Where you are located is really important to determine connectivity.
After having played with the G2x for 5 months now, I'd advise someone to spend their money elsewhere, imo. If you can get it for cheap, no brainer.
Dev support is practically a chain. International O2x's gets the goodies first, while we get the end of the stick.
Also make sure you understand that the G2x Does not have an FM Radio.. Just in case you need that. Optimus 2x Seems to have a working FM radio while I've heard ours is disconnected by hardware.
Is anyone using one of these here in the States? What network are you on and how is the service?
I have an opportunity to get one at a reasonable price and I regret getting rid of my Optimus 3D last year.
Personally, i dont think Lg is bringing that phone to the america since the thrill was kind of a flop... They might bring it to metro or something, but not close to AT&T. Since almost all phones, including the Optimus G are already a quad core, and with the s4 coming and note 2, the 3d max wont stand a chance.

Hey,
No, that's not what I meant. I just wanted to know if anyone was using an international version on any US networks, and if so, what network. It seems like all users are in Europe and Asia.
I have just bought my LG G Pro 2 off eBay for £320 from a UK stocked supply so hopefully will be getting it tomorrow. I am on the Three network so 4G should work fine, although the 800 band 4G won't be supported when they roll it out in the rural areas, but I don't mind that. I currently have an iPhone 5S and iPad, and having previously had all android devices I have just never been able to get into the Apple products, I think they are way over rated, so the iPhone and iPad I have are going on eBay next week, and this LG G Pro 2 will be a compromise over having 2 different devices ). I have read so many positive things about the G Pro 2 and they aren't loaded with stupid technology you don't need, and they are cheaper than Samsung phones. I was looking at the Sony Z Ultra as they are selling them for £250 on Expansys, but I felt it was too big, and many reviewers said the screen wasn't bright enough and the battery isn't removable. So what are your opinions for those of you who already have this phone?

Hi there everyone the phone arrived today, am very impressed, I think the screen is better than my iPhone 5s which is going on eBay next week lol. It blows my iPad air out of the water too, I have always been disappointed with the display on the iPad air. It reminds me of a TN panel on a budget laptop.
I can see this LG G Pro 2 serving me well, its easy to use and I love the UI, which am surprised about as I normally like vanilla stock android. It just seems to work. I can't believe LG hasn't released this phone in the UK. I think it would do very well as far as phablets go. I'll update more as the day goes on.
I haven't seen any FM radio by the way. If you have unlimited data plan just stream it on one of the many radio streaming sites.

Hello all
Does any of you know about the availability of the D837 version in Europe (particularly UK) all I can see on eBay is the D838. My concern is that the D838 only supports 1800 / 2600 on 4G. I am with "Three Mobile" which as I understand mainly uses 800. I can see that the D837 has better frequency support on 2G and 4G which is more useful to me as Three user and also because I travel quite often.
I don't have much information about the F350 model but I can see on eBay being sold from Korea or China (I rather buy from a UK seller), does any one know which frequencies this version supports.
And the last question to the OP (or anyone in a similar situation). I can see that you have bought the D837 and using Three mobile, have you had any issues so far, how does the 4G performs?
Your help would be much appreciated.
LTE bands
I have the F350s, and in the hidden service menu you can choose other LTE bands, and other GSM frequency's then what is listed in the phone spec. For example I'm in the the US on AT&T and LTE band 17 is a option and works great.
this phone is a hidden gem....
I've had my LG G Pro 2 32GB for a couple of months now, it's the best phone I've had since my Sony Xperia Z Ultra 16GB. But now it's time to move on to another device so put it up for sale. It's a shame LG messed up the D83810F update, looking forward to G Pro 3 if LG bother with it.

And the last question to the OP (or anyone in a similar situation). I can see that you have bought the D837 and using Three mobile, have you had any issues so far, how does the 4G performs?
Your help would be much appreciated.

D837 is rare. i wanted to buy one in HK (the seller advertised it) but it was just a sales tactic to get people in the door. most phones from here will be the F350 or D838.
i use GiffGaff in the UK which is on the O2 network so i'll be on 3G when I come over later this month.
While 3 does use some 800MHz, the official line from them is your device needs to support 1800MHz.
