Good Afternoon All,
I wanted to introduce myself and ask my first question on xda-developers! My name is Mike, I'm a 21 year-old Computer Science major from the East Coast. I am familiar with Java and have started doing some app-building for the android OS. I have rooted and rommed my HTC Thunderbolt (Cyanogen Mod FTW!) but now I am beginning to read about Kernels.
My basic understanding is that kernels are pretty much what dictate how the Operating System can talk to the hardware. Essentially similar to how drivers work. Is this correct? Also, what benefits do I gain from changing from stock kernel to a user-created one?
Note: I do have a thunderbolt with an unlocked boot-loader. So I was made aware that I could in-fact load a new kernel If I wanted to!
Please excuse me for the noobish question, but if anyone has information I'd be pleased to listen.
Thanks guys!

anyone savvy got an easy solution to this one?
build/core/envsetup.mk:100: *** Unable to determine HOST_ARCH from uname -sm: Linux armv6l!. Stop.

bah, humbug. I don't want to learn all about makefiles, much less the tweaky aosp setup, just to add HOST_ARCH support for armv6l in the aosp build system.
So, I'm asking for the easy way out, since google isn't very friendly about this one.
thanks for reading!
edit: sorry, mods, my first thread in general, didn't realize no [Q] threads in here. feel free to move it.

yeah, I thought this was a general sort of thing, I deliberately avoided posting it in a dev section of the forum. I saw the sticky saying no questions here shortly after posting this thread and edited the title to request it be moved so you wouldn't have to hunt for it.
sorry it was misplaced. not like I was trying to hide the fact it was a question or avoid having it moved.
I know its not a smartphone but does that matter? is android at all possible on this device? It looks like it has soo much potential at least for andro newbs that dont require wifi or anything. the stock firmware sucks and ive scoured the internet for updated firmware and its all deleted like the device isnt supported anywhere anymore .
anyone here ever take a crack at it ??
Neat phone; I would assume, if Android was never on the phone, and the phone was comprised of hardware parts that have never been in another Android phone, that there wouldn't be enough base information to compile a working image (no driver info for hardware, among other things.) Just a supposition though.

I'm working on a project where I need to interview many people who are not smartphone savvy and most likely will not know what phone OS they are using or even if they have a "smartphone" (Android, iOS, WP7). We need to determine if they really do have a smartphone and if so what version OS they are currently using. Does anyone know of something like a web-based site that would give this information to the user? I found systemdetails.com, but it didn't seem to work for iOS devices. I'm looking ideally for a simple to use and widely available tool (something the user doesn't have to download) to determine this information. Getting version numbers on iOS and WP7 devices isn't too bad as we could give the users directions, but with the Android devices it might be more difficult with the skinning. Thanks for your help!

Well let's try this again. My apologies for posting this in the incorrect forum. Anyone have any ideas on this? Figured I'd give it one last shot. Thank you for the help.
What about browser useragent strings?

BB torch 9850. I work somewhere where they gave me one but I refuse to use it. I'm good with android and love everything about my 3d and all available stuff for it. Still rather a noobie but have alot of fun with rooting all phones near me. Is there anything of the sort for bb. Anything would be better than the way it is, been turned on once. Thanks everyone.

sorry For the failure.
I don't wish the post was not in Q&A
No, not as an end user. The dev could if they were willing, but probably would have done in the first place if they were going to.

Totally different languages of code being used between the two makes it difficult...like the other user said not really probable to be done as an end user of an app...requires the dev to do it themselves...though the process has become slightly easier over time for some devs as there are more tools available and even now companies offering the specific service for porting apps to other platforms...helps those other companies that don't have the staff to handle the port while also supporting the current device app.

Try using AppBrain...it will give you recommended apps that are really useful...
And I know there is an equivalent Android app for every iPhone app that's out there
