Battery Charging with Red X? - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

I have just got my p6200 3g from malaysia. Couldnt be more satisfied. I feel like I just opened the only present I wanted on Christmas morning and its better than I hoped. Of course this came with an international gigantic 3 pronged charger adapter. I have (2) 2amp 5 volt adapters I was using for my dell streak 7. I tried them both and still get the red X. However when powered off, the device shows the battery charging animation. In settings menu it says battery state..discharging. I have ordered one from amazon due any day now, supposedly works with all versions of gtabs including 7.0+. Am I getting a trickle charge or is this due to not being a samsung charger? Im using the supplied samsung cable and outlet is capable of 2amps 5 volts.. please help! thank you!
the big 3 prong plug says 2.5 amp 250V? come on this thing cant need all that.. what does this batt need to charge??
##nevermind, I have the charger, just need the 2 prong USA adapter, hopefully I can find one. anyone have any ideas?

The red X is indeed due to not being a Samsung charger. Samsung tablets look for D+ and D- to be tied together and floating at around 1.2 volts or so. If they see anything else (such as the voltages that iPad chargers put on D+ and D-), they'll assume a USB connection and not charge.

Ebay is your best choice for these type of things :

just ran out, tried one at verizon, generic for galaxy tabs and worked... it says 2a 5v, just like my other 2, but those dont work.. im confused.. anyway I got a charger and Im stoked. Verizon guy asked me if he could "hold" it.

To my knowledge, all Galaxy Tab variants use the same method of signaling a "dumb" charger. So any Samsung charger intended for a Tab should work - see my previous post for details.

thanks a lot dude. excellent.

Or get one of these

Plug it between the cable & any aftermarket usb charger, even the ipad ones, viola normal charging. Can even plug it into the computer for normal charging just a bit slower

hi,
i have the p6200 version of the galaxy tab plus, came with a usb cable and an outlet charger that connects to usb cable. when charging on outlet, it charges fine, but when i connect the tablet to my sony laptop, it says MTP instead of USB connection and there is a red X on the battery icon of my tablet, it's also not charging. how do i get my p6200 to charge on usb connected to my laptop? thanks!

I could be wrong, but i don't think it will charge via laptop usb.

It will and does. I've done it, it just charges MUCH slower and if you use it while plugged in too much it will drain at a slower rate than if you didn't have it plugged in. I was backing up my tab and the battery was at 50%, I plugged it into my computer and by the time the backup was done (nearly 16GB full) it was at 70% (took 2 hours)

Buy one of these: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-data-charging-extension-cable-for-samsung-p1000-black-91141
Set it to charge mode, plug between cable and charger (be it a computer or an otherwise not supported USB charger) and it will charge

My Galaxy tab 2 (GT-P1000) will not charge while it is on. I get the same charging icon with the red X. I am using the original cord that came with the tablet. Only when I turn off the tablet will it charge on the cord. The USB still works fine for connection to Kies. I just can't charge it normally. Any suggestions.
Also, I have been unable to sync my tablet so that my music, video, and pictures are available through the "video" and "music" icons on the desktop. I can play the files individually, but haven't been able to add them to the right library for these media players. What am I doing wrong? LOL

I believe you are asking in the wrong forum. This is the Galaxy Tab 7.0plus (GT-P62XX) area. You should ask in the GT2 section or the original GT forum (the model number you posted is the first Galaxy Tab). The fact that you have the product naming mixed up tells me you may have reading comprehension problems
Anyway. You are not being descriptive enough of your issue with usb charging. Are you using the Tab's charger? If not, it will charge really slow if at all (you didn't read this thread at all, did you?).
Also, You can't (AFAIK) play files directly off your Tab connected to a computer via MTP. It would have to be mounted as an external drive for the computer to use it as such.

[Q] Is everyone have this problem or only me? Charging

guys, I am having this problem from day 2 of having TF. First day was charging fine. Second day I had to play with the wire and reset the device then it charged. Today, NO CHARGING AT ALL!!!!
I tried to the piece that goes to the AC out , but still nothing happening. I connected to my PC, and it recognizes the TF and I can view its files, but with no charging!! Is that normal or what??? Does yours charge when you connected to your PC?? What should I do? Should I call Asus? if yes, what number? or should I return it to Best Buy.??
Help, please ....
I don't think the TF charges when connected to a computer but others have said it does but at a very slow rate. I've heard others say it does slowly only w the screen off as well.
It sounds like you may have a defective charger or charger port on the TF.
Do you have any other USB AC plug adaptors you could try? I know many of them don't put out the same power but may be worth a shot.

I tried a different USB AC plug, but no luck. I guess I am going to return it to Best Buy.
You need to make sure your using the USB cable that came with the TF and the outlet device that came with the cable/TF...
The TF charges at a higher rate than USB from the PC. So, the TF uses a USB 3.0 cable (included - most cables purchased are USB 2.0) which had more pins and allows for faster charging/higher charge rate.
Using the computer will only "trickle" charge. Using a USB 2.0 cable with the TF setup will prevent it from charging or only "trickle" charge....
I did not use any other cable or outlet device beside the one that came with the TF.
It seems it only syncs, but it does NOT charge !!!
I took it to Best Buy they said we can refund the money to your credit or choose another tablet because they don't have it in stock.
I don't want another tablet. If I had to, I will go to iPad 2
3 days now and I am having no issues at all.
I called ASUS, and they said its from the adapter, and I can not use any USB adapter like apple's. So, they want me to send it back to them, and they will do diagnostic at everything and will return it to me.

[Q] Laptop doesn't charge tablet

My laptop recognizes my GT-P6210, and has even before downloading Kies but it won't charge the device.
I downloaded the Kies drivers here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/GT-P6210MAYXAR#content2
It appears that the above is the only drivers...that I could find at least. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Does the laptop just not charge the device?
Thanks
Computers cannot charge the G tab, unless you have a charging cable or an adapter. They can be obtained from eBay.

i think it might charge, just really slowly
No it definitely does not charge, since a little red X appears on the battery when I connect it.

wrong.. it charges but super slow.
try esata/usb port
On my laptop it does charge very slowly. For best results lock the screen and use the esata/usb combo port if you've got one. Seems to produce more power
It's normal that a PC or a Notebook can't charge a tab unless u have special usb-port that has a higher output.
Sent from my GT-P6201 using xda premium
I have higher output USB ports but it's still just a trickle charge on the tablet. My cell phone charges fast using the same ports.
Usually cell phones have 1000-2000 mAh. The Samsung Galaxy tab 7.0 plus is 4000 mAh. It charges, but a a very, very low pace. The greater the battery, the longer it takes. And on top of that, the system is always draining the battery, even when the screen is off, and with more demanding processors, the greater the consumption. Just think of the new Ipad, there are already reviews that advise that charging it through usb port is not practical at all. Please, I'm not starting a flame here, just pointing out that fact. In fact, very likely the Android tablet will follow the same path, given that the future is quad-core and even more cores. May be this will be solved with usb 3 that promises greater voltage (or amps, I'm not sure).
I use USB 3.0 ports for charging, tablet is a trickle charge, phone charges fast.
actually it is charging, the x symbol/logo just to remind you that charging using usb is not effective and very slow.
Yeah. Mine too. It shows a Red "X" till I read somewhere in XDA forums (can't recall where exactly) that we can get a special cable to do the charge.

ipad and iphone cables on samasung galaxy tab 7.0 plus

just in case someone forgets their power cable sometime during traveling. The iphone/ipad usb cable work to charge the galaxy tab plus but the power has to be powered off.
I purchased a refurbished galaxy tab 7.0 plus from cowboom on a special they had it didn't come with a power cord or any accessories. So I used my friends power cord from their iPhone and it wouldn't work then by accident I powered it down while I had it plugged in and it showed it was charging it, came back 3 hrs later fully charged.
Could not get it to transfer files. Sure glad it has a micro sd slot.
Have been doing this for over a week now. no issues, I ordered a replacement but in a pinch it works great.
Excellent post.
I've been using the same method since June when I purchased my P6210 on sale from Best Buy.
Only difference I have found is that I can get it to work without needing to power-off the tablet. Granted, I am using the original OEM charge cable with the Apple charger. To bypass this, I have to plug and unplug the cable before it is recognized by the tablet.
Secondly, once you go back to the stock charger and cable, the tablet does not recognize that a charge is being initiated. Power-cycle the tablet and it works.
Just an FYI
Good info to know in a crunch!
Thanks for this, great info. Nice we have a lot Iphone cables lying around.
That's amazing info.
I lost my stock charger, so i could charge my tab, it works great. Thanks:good
What? The plug in design is different so it wont go in. if you compare your oem samsung with an oem apple, theyre completely different... so how are you guys doing this without breaking the device??
I never even thought of trying it because I would have expected Apple to be way different. Will file this away for emergencies.
Thanks!

it's amazing how you got that plugged in.. i have 2 original apple cords and neither of them could be plugged into gtab.. and never will maybe.. i think they have exactly same size but different sockets inside. can you give us some picture of what you did ?
I also would like some additional information on this. My dad bought an iPad/iPhone car charger by accident for his 8.9 and then raged at me for it not working. He never returned it so...

Works on my Note 10.1, couldnt find the sammy cable so I used my iphone cable and its charging just fine.
iphone cables won't fit? how you do this???
Well there are two little tabs inside the port and if your delicate with it you can move them out of the way and the plug will fit And then when needed put them back in place.
It still thirty pin but from what I've found surfing around for the last three day's is that
a. You get really slow charge time or you may even have to do it with the tablet off
I agree after an hour it registered that it was charging but still looped on the Samsung logo because i think it hasn't charged enough I'm going to do like he said and charge it over night while its off
And b. That the slow charge has something to do with the voltage into the wall piece not the cord and that it takes forever charge but in a pinch it seems to work I'll let you know how it works out for me

[Q] Can't charge off PC USB?

My Photon Q won't charge off a PC USB port, or my laptop. Is this common? Thanks.
Are you using the usb cable that came with the phone? Reason I ask....I've discovered this phone is extremely picky about the cables you use. So far of the ones I have on hand, I can only consistently charge while in the car using my Belkin usb charging adapter with the Motorola cable that came with the phone. That includes a fairly nice ferrite core 6ft usb cable I got from Monoprice...which it works fine at home on AC, but in the car it stutters back and forth between charging and not charging.
Just today I used a cheap USB cable I bought off of ebay to charge my PQ using my laptop.
Its one of the ones sold as "HTC OEM USB Charger + cable" on ebay for like 3 bucks.
I also charge it at home using a green 3m cable from ebay, also bought for like 3 bucks lol.
Does it require that drivers be installed on the PC to get a charge? I've tried a few cables that I have laying around. I'll see if I can find other cables to try. The weird thing is if the phone is off, and plugged in, the LED lights up green, as if it's charging. But using the same cable, if the phone is on, it won't acknowledge that it is plugged in.

No, I wouldn't think so...
I've been able to charge off of many different USB cables on my Q. Not sure... Only thing it's been picky on so far is the wall wart - cable it hasn't seemed too picky about.
If its an old desktop with USB 1.1 it may not charge, and many laptops won't allow charging via USB if the laptop itself is not plugged into AC. Just a thought.

Very good point ^^^. I've heard some laptops, even when plugged in, still don't provide enough juice to charge (some) devices. Perhaps your laptop is one of these low-power USB port devices.
ive noticed that this phone is picky about what charger you use. i have a hard time charging on my pc as well. and certain micro usb's i have dont seem to charge it well either. needs to be the stock plug it came with.
I've basically given up at this point. Blackberry AC chargers work well for me, so I'll try and track down a few more of them. Otherwise, nothing is consistent. The desktop I've used has a plenty big enough power supply, and it charges my Epic with no problem. My personal laptop and work laptop both charged the Epic, but not the Photon Q. I guess I'll just have to carry around a charger instead of a MicroUSB cable when I'm on the road with my laptop.
Thanks, all.

All,
For what little it's worth, I just noticed that the words "Not Charging" come up on the lock screen whenever I connect to the USB port of my laptop or desktop. So the PQ knows it's plugged in; it just refuses to accept the charge.
Also, whenever the battery completely dies, the phone will start to charge. It will charge for a few minutes until it has enough battery to turn itself on. As soon as it turns on, it stops charging, and a minute later, shuts down because of the dead battery. Then it starts charging again. This basically gives me an endless loop of the phone charging, starting, discharging, and shutting back off. I can't even get it to stay off long enough to get a useful charge without turning on automatically.
Yeah, the only issue I've had with this phone at all is the extreme 'quirkiness' it has in regards to charging on anything other than the stock usb cord & power adapter it plugs into. Even using the Moto vehicle dock for the Q, its completely hit/miss on charging. It will *often* go into that 'Not Charging' state where its kind of keeping sort of a baseline/'stalemate' of the current charge level for me, not really going down but not charging back up either. Not really sure what's up with that. With my vehicle dock for the longest I kept thinking maybe my cig lighter port on my car is bad, but I don't have issues with my radar detector at all.
Had the same problem with the not charging a few days back. I was leaving the phone in Mass Storage mode because just getting it into Mass Storage was a headache originally.
Hooked it up to it's original cable and woke up with 65% battery. Switched from mass storage to charge only and it started charging.
Not sure if it was caused by being in Mass Storage and wouldn't charge but now I put in Charge Only before bed.
It always works (in my experience) with the original cable that comes with it regardless, its anything else where its quirky.

Isn't there a setting in ##3282# that enables and disables USB charging? Y'all have probably thought of this already. Anyways just thought if throw that out there. [Q] P6800 Won't Charge In Vehicle

Had the same issue with Tab 8.9. I have a 2012 Wrangler, with a built in USB port, also have a USB charger plugged into the power port. When I connect my 7.7, all I get is a red X over the battery icon. In the settings under status, it says "discharging".i have no issues with my Note2 using the same ports. Have tried different cables with the tab.
Any body have any ideas? The tab is stock, unrooted, running ICS.

My USB charger is a 2 Amp, but is dual port. Could have sworn the package said it was 2 amps per port, unless both ports were used, then would be 1amp per port. Then my other is 2.5 Micro USB, BUT has a USB port in it as well.
The P6800 is picky for what charger you use. I got several chargers and tabs and phones. 2 of those are very picky, the 7.7 and the HP-touchpad.
Just get a real Samsung car charger and you will be ok.
maybe the thing (tab) needs to be powered) OFF before it will charge in your car's USB charge port...
I know at home with the USB plugged into the laptop.. it will NOT charge,,,...unless I power it OFF.. then it will charge...

Hi,
I spent a lot of time searching for good charger (bought at least 4) different types, and got allways the same results the red X until few days ago. I tried my Samsung I9100 phone cable (micro USB) with an adpter (P1000) bought from eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-3...Readers_USB_Host_Adapters&hash=item484f20b751) for almost nothing. The result was impressive, on on hour drive the device charges at a rate of 10% progress (without having the red X).
Some thing else that may interst some of questioning the charge from the laptop, I had the same fantastic result (but the adapter does not allow Sync).
Cheers

there are ways to get this done.. you'll just have to buy a new piece of hardware and they are way cheap.
