Any roms for Verizon 4g Xoom? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if any of the roms work with Verizon 4g Xoom? Also I rarely use 3g data and almost always just use wifi. Assuming I would flash one of these roms and just use wifi could I go back to stock rom and have 3g/4g back?

No custom roms work with 4G at this time. It appears to be a bit tricky to flash back to stock and restore your 4G, but I'm not an expert. There are threads on this topic, if you do a diligent search. If you are using the xda app or tapatalk, try searching in the browser version...search results are much better.

It's actually pretty quick & easy to get back to 4G stock. IMO it takes longer to DL the files than it does to actually flash them.

Use the universal root method in the development section.

Even if it is true custom ROMs don't work on 4G, you can definitely still use custom kernels, AFAIK. You know, for overclocking and other fun!
Think you only have two choices for that... Tiamat Odachi and Rogue Rana. Don't know which is the better choice...

Why are there no roms for 4G? I haven't upgraded mine yet and I don't even use 3G so I don't care much, but I was curious as to why there's no rom for 4G devices?

brd is cooking up a 4g ROM....check his twitter

CDMA and GSM NXS Threads...

Can the XDA Mods or whoever please please make 2 seperate threads for this. I have a SPRINT Nexus S and i want to root and put a good rom on my NXS but after reading and reading and reading, i realize the thread is meant for the Tmobile GSM version. I am seriously just done, im confused, i dont know what threads to even go by right now. I dont know what Recovery Console, Root Method, Files, Roms are even what i should be looking for at this point. I didnt even know that Tmobile has the nexus s. I work at a Sprint Corporate store and i thought we were the only one that has the Nexus S...
Can someone shed some light for me here??
I was pretty active with my Samsung Moment over at SDX and even posted some Write-ups on rooting, theming, installing roms for the moment. Now i have the nexus s and want to do the same but this is mind boggling now that im seeing people talking about the tmobile gsm version.
So if it says 4g then it for you. If not then don't flash it. Easy as pie.

What he said. Anything that pertains to sprint version will say so on title otherwise assume its for gsm version. There are plenty of stickies with ns4g noted on title with info on roms root methods etc.
not to mention i cant even post replies in any DEV thread asking if this thread/files are meant for the sprint nexus s.

Yes, the T-Mobile version is just known as a Nexus S and the phone doesn't actually support the 4G radio. It will often be referred to as the i9020, i9023 and such.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Yes it is easy to figure out which threads are for which phone, but I agree with the OP that there should be a separate forum for the CDMA and GSM versions of the phone. Especially now that the CDMA version is catching on and more and more people are jumping on the NS4G bandwagon. I hope the mods listen and separate the 2. I love my fellow T-Mobile peeps and would miss them, but it needs to be done because I can see how it would be confusing for noobs especially.

tmobile has a 4G (3.5G cough) network but nexus S GSM does not support it. CDMA NS 4G from sprint does.
The actual names are also different in that respect:
Nexus S (T-mobile GSM)
Nexus S 4G (Sprint CDMA)
As you can see 4G is the only difference in the name hence the [4G] in most thread titles.
thanks for clearing things up, im not necessarily a noob..a noob to the xda forums yes. i got really into my moment on the sdx forums but FINALLY upgraded and sdx really has nothing. its looking like the process to root and install roms/kernels/kitchens are slightly different. im seeing everything done through adb where on my moment i just flashed the android opsys + recovery.tar with the samsung updater. threw the rom.zip, bootanimation.zip, themes and modded files/update/zips on the root of my sd and updated through recovery.
anyone have a stable rom you'll recommend? whats the difference between the CM Nightly and CM7?

There is no stable for crespo4G (NS4G) but nighly 7 runs just fine. You can get it here. I also use Netarchy's kernel found here Make SURE you get the universal if you are running CM7.
Now, for stock, there is nothing better than Pete's stuff here You can also flash Netarchy's kernel but this time, you need the other one which says "for stock".
Also, be careful with which kernel you flash. Netarchy's post has many links including the GSM NS. Also, be careful with any other ROMs. We've had a case of bad ones for NS4G.
Like everyone else has been saying, in the ROM title it will show NS4g, or CDMA, or sprint. I have been browsing the dev section and have no issues. As far as a stable rom I am using Opensoju 0.2.4 and it appears to be working quite well. Read through the rom threads and see all the comments and then pick one and try it. If it is not to your liking, try another. When I had my EVO I flashed roms 10 times a day haha. It gets addicting!
I see my voice has reached higher power and there is now 2 seperate parent threads. Nexus S and Nexus S 4G (sprint) .
Anyone clear up what the difference of CM7 and The nightlies version?
You really didn't know T-Mobile had this phone first? Ive been eyeing it since they got it.

[Modems] [I897] [2.3.3] Captivate kernel compatible - minor findings

The following is a list of modems I have tried with my Captivate.
Notes, Setup, etc.
Cognition 5 b2 kernel, provides root and Clockwork capabilities
Stock 2.3.3 KF1 ROM, removed AT&T bloat that's all
"Tests" were done with Speedtest
General observations were noted in the Saratoga/Albany, NY to NYC, NY area.
Davlik cache wiped before each modem flash via Clockwork
GPS testing using AngryGPS
Looks like
doesn't work here, so just follow the link to the google doc until I find an easier way of doing this.

If anyone has any modems that work with I897 Captivate(!not 9000 series) kernels please feel free to list them, I am searching the forums but I know I am missing some. Clockwork or Odin doesn't matter to me. ;-)
These will continue to be tested on ONLY Captivate based kernels.

I just used Odin3 1.81 to flash these on there. The original files are in the CWM zip files and can be placed in the Phone section of Odin.

What I did was:
1) Grab cwm2 KB1 zip and open it
2) Grab any cwm3 modem zip, open it and replace the modem.bin file with the modem.bin from the KB1 zip
3) Copy cwm3 zip to phone
4) Flash with cwm4 (yes it's compatible)
Here is the one I used. Props to devz3r0 for the cwm3 zip I used.
As a follow up the JL1 is completely unreliable in my short experiences with it.
First and Second run with Speed test were great, then I got a call and quality was so-so. Then after the call I couldn't get the data to reconnect and rebooted. Now the speeds are very slow ping times in the 2000ms range and 3G performance is abysmal at best most of the time it just locks up and says network error.
I doubt I will be able to use this much longer today.

I was right I couldn't deal, so I am currently running JJJV5, yes it's a 9000 modem :X I'm going to run this for a while and see if it's stable on KF1. I like the speed of 3G with this one and signal strength seems up there as some places where I would get 2 EDGE bars before I now get 2 3G bars. As stated I will keep this one for a while and post back some experiences.
Ha! Data is awesome, but you can't hear the phone.. So there you go, useless on a Captivate kernel
I see you added JJJV5 to your results.. I've been dying to try this modem after reading all of the good feedback, but I thought it was a I9000 modem and wasn't compatible.
Edit: Didn't see the above post before replying... Let us know how it goes!
Still looking for some more Captivate modems to try out, if there is anymore.

I have a feeling that is the way mine is looking too, the non-9000 builds simply aren't giving me the service level I require. My data speed is crap, the GPS is horrid and I can't seem to find the fix no matter what I try.

I thought trying something actually made for our phones would be better, but far from it. I will now stick with i9000 roms and modems, they just work better, faster and are more feature packed. I guess the carriers requirements are the problem. Thanks for your research.

Hello came over from the Captivate

Ok jumped ship from the Captivate to the Inspire.
So far am liking the phone.
I want to root it and rom. I saw the sticky in the general section and want to ask is that the best place to start?
Captivate was fairly easy to mess with. Reading a bit seems the inspire is a bit more tricky. I just want to make sure that I don't brick it lol. I want to make sure I can get it back to stock if need be.
If this should have been in Q&A then mod please move it. Figured I would introduce myself and get pointed in the correct direction. No sense making useless posts.

Welcome fellow ex-Captivate owner. Your instints are spot-on. That sticky is THE best place to start. Everything you need is in that thread, in terms of info and links to rooting methods, etc.
As a former Captivate owner, the inspire is not "one-clickable,",like the Captivate, and A LOT of people get tripped-up on the rooting process. It's more involved, but that's just how it is. The advantages this phone has over the Captivate make it worth it.
What about drivers. I downloaded some but not sure how or if I need to install them.
For computer drivers go to the official htc website and download and install the ones for the inspire.Once installed, you can delete htc sync since it isn't that useful anyways and can interfere with computer to phone communications.
Now you should be fine on drivers.

Well I appreciate that response but can you point me too some. I would like a GB rom and not sure what the difference is between Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0. I gather getting a sense 3.0 is the way to go.
I am currently using Leedroid GB right now.
If I want to flash another rom what is the procedure for that? On the Cappy I would flash back to a stock rom then flash the new rom. Is that similar here or what?
From experience it is best to do a backup of apps and contacts and do a full wipe from recovery
1- wipe data / factory reset
2- mounts and storage - format system
3- advanced - wipe Dalvik Cache
4- Install Rom and add-ons
when going between ROMs for the inspire it is best to do this. Only when upgrading to a new release of a ROM you can just flash over the top of it and sometimes that gets sticky.

Thanks much. Those 3 steps are what flashing to stock with Odin is on a Cappy. So I now know what to do on the Inspire.
Bit different animal the Inspire then the Cappy. So far am liking it a bit better. Sense is much nicer then touchwiz but I removed touchwiz and replaced with launcher pro about 2hrs after first getting the Cappy.
One issue I get is the clock/weather widget reports the temp in Celsius how can that be changed?

when switching between ext3 and ext4 roms you need to add
3.5 mount /system & /data
might as well be in the habit.
I personally like sense 3.0, but the sense 2.x are a lot more stable with less hiccups.
i know its a pain, but please read the threads. by page 200 you will know the answers to all the irritating questions people just keep asking over and over and over. but keep on reading because there will be little gems here and there.
that 3-4 hours reading up on a particular rom will come in handy when you flash and know what to expect, common issues and how to deal with them. that 3-4 hours will keep you from having wait a day to be acknowledged with a lovely "search the thread" or "read the OP" response.
but hopefully you rooted your captivate, know to read up first, seach second, reread, search again and then ask. and welcome to the inspire!
I had my Captivate rooted and rom'd about 2 weeks after I got it. So yeah I am a flasher.
I know what to expect if something goes wrong and usually could get out of it with my cappy. I never had to use a jig or even buy one. I seemed have good results with anything I did on that phone. Finally found a nice GB rom for it great battery life.
Reading through the threads I do do that but there is so much bs and off topic stuff in some of these threads it gets tiresome to paw through 200+ pages to find something. I suck at searching on forums always get non related stuff.
I hear ya. I am not a noob at this just cautious and like to ask questions before doing things.
I'm also a Captivate to Inspire person. I agree that things look like they were a lot easier on the Captivate. I'm very nervous that I'll break something. The phone seems to work fine stock though.

You're not going to break anything. It might LOOK like you did, but as long as the phone at least starts to boot up, even if it appears stuck, it's fixable.
And the phone does work great stock, compared to a stock captivate, it just works even better with a custom ROM, as most will improve the battery life significantly, if properly flashed, and absent of any rogue battery-draining apps that are installed by the owner of the phone.

The best place to start if you ware wishing to root your phone is the Guide that is stickied in the General section. It will cover the two rooting methods currently available to us. It also covers general fixes for soft bricks, how to flash a rom (not just for beginners, but for every time you flash a rom). You can find the guidehere.
2a. What is the best rom?
Click to collapse
This question get asked time and time again. The question itself is extremely subjective. The honest answer is there really is no "best rom". It all depends on what the development team is doing to the rom, and what the flasher is looking for in a custom rom.
2b. What rom has the best battery life?
Click to collapse
This question is also very subjective. There are to many variables that come into play with roms to narrow it down or pick a specific rom. Things like signal, network, radio, ril, cpu settings, apps, widgets, and kernel all come into play. The only way to find out, is to see what works best for you and your needs.
2c. What rom has the least amount of bugs
Click to collapse
Every rom is different. The very nature of custom roms are to be in a constant state of beta. With that said every phone reacts differently to every rom. Even the stock rom that comes with the phone is subject to bugs, for instance the captivate was released with numerous bugs.
3a. My phones rooted can I install the OTA?

The OTA (over the air) update will download on sense based roms, but no matter how many times you try the install will fail. There are two options, return to stock, and possibly loose the ability to root or wait 24-48 hours until the dev's come out with a rom based on the update.

General Rooting Questions:
4a. Why is the rooting process so complicated?
Click to collapse
Unlike most phones the inspire requires you to not only create a gold card, but also to downgrade the radio and rom in order to perm root the phone. There is no easier way or way around it. Visonary and Gingerbreak will not work.
5a. What is a gold card?
Click to collapse
Basically you are editing the sd card, so that you can bypass the CID check.
5b. Why am I having trouble making a goldcard
Click to collapse
Some SD cards just will not work as gold cards. Confirmed working sd cards: Kingston, PKNY. Some samsung sd cards will work (the ones that typically come with the phone). Though please note: it may take as many as 10-20 tries before you actually make one, and you will need to format the sd card each time you try.
5c. After I have rooted my phone do I still need the goldcard to flash roms?
Click to collapse
No, once the rooting and s-off process has completed you will no longer need your gold card. You can format your gold card, or you can leave it as is, and use it as a normal sd card.
6a. Why do I have no wifi/sound after downgrade?
Click to collapse
The rom/radio used to downgrade the inspire is a native ACE rom/radio, though it is not native to the inspire. The rom does not have the correct drivers. You will need to flash a custom rom of your choice, along with the recommended radio for the rom.
7a. Why is rage not found?
Click to collapse
When your anti virus/malware is activated, rage will appear to the program as a virus/malware. Essentially Rage is a forkbomb used on android to gain root access. It is not a virus nor is it malware. In order to use rage you will need to deactivate your virus/malware software so it does not quarantine/delete it. After the rooting process you can turn your protection back on.

Radio and Network Questions:
8a. What radio should I flash?
Click to collapse
This is once again one of those subjective questions. Every phone responds differently to every radio. The radio's signal and data strength will differ for every region. Essentially what may work for some one may not work for you.
8b. How do I flash a Radio?
Click to collapse
The safest way to flash a radio is through the bootloader (not to be confused with recovery). You will need to check the MD5sum of the radio to make sure the file is not corrupt, you are able to do this on your computer or on your phone which ever you choose. The file will be in the form of a pd95img.zip which is the update file name for the inspire. You can find Radio & RIL's along with instructions here.
9a. What is a RIL?
Click to collapse
Tribalartgod: Radio Interface Library. In the most basic of terms, this is the link between your hardware and software on your phone. Think of it as device drivers. You can use other RIL files with your radio, but having matched pairs can warrant better battery life, and more stability on your signal/data strength.
9b. How do I flash a RIL?
Click to collapse
A RIL is flashed the same as any rom mod, theme, or rom itself, through CWM (Clock Work Mod Recovery). You are going to want to make a nandroid back up before flashing.
10a. Why Are my data speeds inconsistent?
Click to collapse
This is very subjective as well. There are numerous factors that come into play such as: Radio, RIL, network strength, network load, and apn settings. If you are having consistently slow speeds take a look at this thread(HenryBravo) or this thread(id10terrordfw)
11a. Why is my data not working?
Click to collapse
This could be a combination of a few things, but the most common problems are that 1. The sim card/sd card cover is not on, 2. You still have the downgraded radio, 3. You have no APN under network>apn settings.

Rom and Flashing Related Questions:
12a. How do I flash a rom?
Click to collapse
Instead of reiterating the steps I will link to the guide which has a "noob" friendly step by step guide. You can find it here.
12b. What is a rom?
Click to collapse
Essentially a rom is what you see on the screen. Of course it is a little more then that, but that is the easiest way to look at it.
13a. How do I flash a kernel?
Click to collapse
First you are going to want to make sure the kernel you flash is compatible with the rom and or phone you wish to flash it on. The steps for flashing a kernel are almost identical to flashing a rom, with one major exception you are NOT going to do a full wipe!
13b. What is a kernel?
Click to collapse
Essentially the kernel is what makes it happen. It is the software that tells the hardware to work with the software and vice versa.
14a. How do I make a nandroid back up?
Click to collapse
A nandroid back up is probably one of the most important things you can do before flashing. Essentially it is backing up the entire rom to include: Sms/mms, Contacts, APPS, book marks, personal settings. It does not include anything contained on different partitions, such as radios and splashscreens.
There are two processes to creating a nandroid backup. The first method is using rom manager and selecting back up current rom, with this method you can name the back up which will be saved on your sd-card. The other method involves booting into recovery and backing up from Clock work mod recovery, note with this method you will not be able to name the backup, but it will be saved on your sd card.
15a. How do I flash a Theme?
Click to collapse
You are going to use the same process as you would with a rom, except you are NOT going to do a full wipe. Note: The exception to this is if you are using a cm7 based rom that has theme manger installed, in which case it is installed just like an app.
16a. How do I flash a boot animation?
Click to collapse
Once again this will be the same method as flashing a rom, you will NOT being a full wipe though.
17a. How do I flash a splash screen?
Click to collapse
Splash screens are flashed through the bootloader, just like a radio. The splash screen will be in a pd98img.zip format.
18a. Why does my phone show desire hd and not inspire 4g
Click to collapse
Essentially the inspire is a desire hd with slight modifications. This seems to bother a lot of people, but in all honest it is really trivial.
Note: If you do convert your phones name to inspire from desire, carrier billing may not work on some roms.
19a. I don't have h+ anymore only h how do I fix this?
Click to collapse
There is nothing to fix, the H+ is purely cosmetic, essentially H=H+ there is no difference.
You will see this happen when your using a rom based on the desire/pyramid, the images only make a cameo appearance on att.

Backup and App questions:
20a. What is the best thing to use to back up apps?
Click to collapse
This is a subjective question as well, there are two main apps used to back up apps along with the apps data. Titanium backup /pro and My back up pro.
Note: Restoring backup-ed apps + data may adversely effect the performance of a rom.
21a. What is the best app to use to back up sms and mms?
Click to collapse
Go sms and a few other apps have the ability to backup sms and mms, the phone doesn't natively have this function.
22a. Why won't my app install correctly.
Click to collapse
9 times out of 10 it was downloaded incorrectly, and will need to be re-downloaded and installed. In the other 1% of instances it is a compatibility issue with the rom you are using.

I'VE got one for you. I have a Inspire4G and I am running Coredroid 7.0 and have been trying to change the model name back to Inspire4g from Desire HD. I've tried to edit the\ build.prop=Model name and \manufacturer=HTC. Saved and rebooted but it didn't change the model name. I'm new to all this fun stuff and its just really bothersome to me for some reason. I've also tried to flash the GB_Patch_DHD_to_Inspire4G33.zip and where it's made for Leedroid Rom it changes my Rom name. I've tried to Search the forums here and @ Coredroid.com .But still have no luck at a good/working fix.
If anyone can help me out it would be really appreciated. Thanks

You kind of missed the point of this post.
Its a place to reference questions that are commonly asked, your vest bet would be to post in the cordroid forum after you get 10 posts, or pm one of the coredroid team members.

Something in reference to the missing H/H+ after flashing a rom and the insignificance of it might be in order. Also, perhaps a brief explanation of s-on/s-off might not be a bad idea.

Definitions
Is there a chance you can make a definitions/list section? I have been playing with different roms and have found that ROMS, Kernels, etc can be confusing. What do I flash first? Do I need to flash the LeeKernel if I am going to run Cyanogen? etc.
The thing I see is a lot of development is being done that says something like "based on FroYo" but it takes a bit of research as a noob to figure out what FroYo is. Definitions of Kernels, Roms, etc with a list of what is what may ease this burden.
*Edited* I just re-read the link in MudKnot's Sig... What I am looking for is there. DOH!
Anyway... great site guys. Thanks for doing so much work.

This is awesome. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. Already I see many of the questions I have listed here. Can't wait to read through it when its done!
Edit: Ive seen a few posts about people who may have bricked or soft bricked their phones. Maybe something that addresses that as well?

Guys, why is it that an atrix can support my wifi strongest signal which is a VIZIO. my INspire reads only the normal ViZIO signal which speeds to 2.4ghz (and so does every other devices as my cpu). And I tried with a stock inspire and my custom one.
But the issue lies on one day I used the Atrix from a friend, and it read my VIZIO (HD) which signal runs up to 5ghz. Does it have to do with the radio or is the app. Or there is a hardware issue?

You knew this was going to happen didn't you?
BTW thank you so much for all your work. It's good to see you back. I would have DIED without your sticky when I was rooting my Inspire....well maybe not die....I like to exaggerate sometimes...
Hey mud, you may want to add under the goldcard section the fact that you can reuse a goldcard to root other inspires.
The reason I posted here is because WiFi and radio signals are a common question. And dont get fooled by my newbie estatus. Ive been here from the beginin. I lost one acount by memory loss. And I know the rules I ask you because you have a radio thread

Rooting Mesmerize already running 2.3.4?

I picked up a Mesmerize yesterday and was surprised to find it already running 2.3.4. I'm not sure if that's already a common thing on these, but coming from the Captivate world (still have it for personal use, the Mez is for work) it seemed very surprising.
Anyway, I definitely want to root this thing and get rid of the bloat; Is there a specific process for rooting these things with 2.3.4? I keep seeing stuff for Eclair and Froyo, but am unsure if GB uses the same Z4Root process or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck.. there is NO development going on for this phone.

There doesn't appear to be any way for users to root GB on our phones at the moment. The only solution that I've found presented so far is to flash a pre-rooted ROM.

The developers didn't want to get fisted.
To the best of my knowledge, you basically have to flash in a rooted image - the older root exploits used apparently were finally patched in 2.3.

I've counted about 10 or so Gingerbread ROMs available for the Mesmerize, 2 AOSP and the rest TW-based. Roughly half have had some sort of activity within the month.
Oh yea and CM7.1 just dropped this morning, so yes there is still dev for this phone............
Anyone actually looking check out rootzwiki.com its got a decent mez section. Also if u have a new eh09 outta the box it wont except anything below eh09. Weird modem issues.

ya i'll have to disagree too, there are lots of TW and non-TW based roms out there, personally I use MIUI...honestly unless u have to root specifically for an application and don't want to use a custom rom rooting the stock rom is useless, since the mes has an unlocked bootloader you can just flash clockwork whenever you want and load whatever rom suits you.
