General Questions:
1a. I am a noob where do I start?
Click to collapse
The best place to start if you ware wishing to root your phone is the Guide that is stickied in the General section. It will cover the two rooting methods currently available to us. It also covers general fixes for soft bricks, how to flash a rom (not just for beginners, but for every time you flash a rom). You can find the guidehere.
2a. What is the best rom?
Click to collapse
This question get asked time and time again. The question itself is extremely subjective. The honest answer is there really is no "best rom". It all depends on what the development team is doing to the rom, and what the flasher is looking for in a custom rom.
2b. What rom has the best battery life?
Click to collapse
This question is also very subjective. There are to many variables that come into play with roms to narrow it down or pick a specific rom. Things like signal, network, radio, ril, cpu settings, apps, widgets, and kernel all come into play. The only way to find out, is to see what works best for you and your needs.
2c. What rom has the least amount of bugs
Click to collapse
Every rom is different. The very nature of custom roms are to be in a constant state of beta. With that said every phone reacts differently to every rom. Even the stock rom that comes with the phone is subject to bugs, for instance the captivate was released with numerous bugs.
3a. My phones rooted can I install the OTA?
Click to collapse
The OTA (over the air) update will download on sense based roms, but no matter how many times you try the install will fail. There are two options, return to stock, and possibly loose the ability to root or wait 24-48 hours until the dev's come out with a rom based on the update.
Click to collapse
General Rooting Questions:
4a. Why is the rooting process so complicated?
Click to collapse
Unlike most phones the inspire requires you to not only create a gold card, but also to downgrade the radio and rom in order to perm root the phone. There is no easier way or way around it. Visonary and Gingerbreak will not work.
5a. What is a gold card?
Click to collapse
Basically you are editing the sd card, so that you can bypass the CID check.
5b. Why am I having trouble making a goldcard
Click to collapse
Some SD cards just will not work as gold cards. Confirmed working sd cards: Kingston, PKNY. Some samsung sd cards will work (the ones that typically come with the phone). Though please note: it may take as many as 10-20 tries before you actually make one, and you will need to format the sd card each time you try.
5c. After I have rooted my phone do I still need the goldcard to flash roms?
Click to collapse
No, once the rooting and s-off process has completed you will no longer need your gold card. You can format your gold card, or you can leave it as is, and use it as a normal sd card.
6a. Why do I have no wifi/sound after downgrade?
Click to collapse
The rom/radio used to downgrade the inspire is a native ACE rom/radio, though it is not native to the inspire. The rom does not have the correct drivers. You will need to flash a custom rom of your choice, along with the recommended radio for the rom.
7a. Why is rage not found?
Click to collapse
When your anti virus/malware is activated, rage will appear to the program as a virus/malware. Essentially Rage is a forkbomb used on android to gain root access. It is not a virus nor is it malware. In order to use rage you will need to deactivate your virus/malware software so it does not quarantine/delete it. After the rooting process you can turn your protection back on.
Click to collapse
Radio and Network Questions:
8a. What radio should I flash?
Click to collapse
This is once again one of those subjective questions. Every phone responds differently to every radio. The radio's signal and data strength will differ for every region. Essentially what may work for some one may not work for you.
8b. How do I flash a Radio?
Click to collapse
The safest way to flash a radio is through the bootloader (not to be confused with recovery). You will need to check the MD5sum of the radio to make sure the file is not corrupt, you are able to do this on your computer or on your phone which ever you choose. The file will be in the form of a pd95img.zip which is the update file name for the inspire. You can find Radio & RIL's along with instructions here.
9a. What is a RIL?
Click to collapse
Tribalartgod: Radio Interface Library. In the most basic of terms, this is the link between your hardware and software on your phone. Think of it as device drivers. You can use other RIL files with your radio, but having matched pairs can warrant better battery life, and more stability on your signal/data strength.
9b. How do I flash a RIL?
Click to collapse
A RIL is flashed the same as any rom mod, theme, or rom itself, through CWM (Clock Work Mod Recovery). You are going to want to make a nandroid back up before flashing.
10a. Why Are my data speeds inconsistent?
Click to collapse
This is very subjective as well. There are numerous factors that come into play such as: Radio, RIL, network strength, network load, and apn settings. If you are having consistently slow speeds take a look at this thread(HenryBravo) or this thread(id10terrordfw)
11a. Why is my data not working?
Click to collapse
This could be a combination of a few things, but the most common problems are that 1. The sim card/sd card cover is not on, 2. You still have the downgraded radio, 3. You have no APN under network>apn settings.

Rom and Flashing Related Questions:
12a. How do I flash a rom?
Click to collapse
Instead of reiterating the steps I will link to the guide which has a "noob" friendly step by step guide. You can find it here.
12b. What is a rom?
Click to collapse
Essentially a rom is what you see on the screen. Of course it is a little more then that, but that is the easiest way to look at it.
13a. How do I flash a kernel?
Click to collapse
First you are going to want to make sure the kernel you flash is compatible with the rom and or phone you wish to flash it on. The steps for flashing a kernel are almost identical to flashing a rom, with one major exception you are NOT going to do a full wipe!
13b. What is a kernel?
Click to collapse
Essentially the kernel is what makes it happen. It is the software that tells the hardware to work with the software and vice versa.
14a. How do I make a nandroid back up?
Click to collapse
A nandroid back up is probably one of the most important things you can do before flashing. Essentially it is backing up the entire rom to include: Sms/mms, Contacts, APPS, book marks, personal settings. It does not include anything contained on different partitions, such as radios and splashscreens.
There are two processes to creating a nandroid backup. The first method is using rom manager and selecting back up current rom, with this method you can name the back up which will be saved on your sd-card. The other method involves booting into recovery and backing up from Clock work mod recovery, note with this method you will not be able to name the backup, but it will be saved on your sd card.
15a. How do I flash a Theme?
Click to collapse
You are going to use the same process as you would with a rom, except you are NOT going to do a full wipe. Note: The exception to this is if you are using a cm7 based rom that has theme manger installed, in which case it is installed just like an app.
16a. How do I flash a boot animation?
Click to collapse
Once again this will be the same method as flashing a rom, you will NOT being a full wipe though.
17a. How do I flash a splash screen?
Click to collapse
Splash screens are flashed through the bootloader, just like a radio. The splash screen will be in a pd98img.zip format.
18a. Why does my phone show desire hd and not inspire 4g
Click to collapse
Essentially the inspire is a desire hd with slight modifications. This seems to bother a lot of people, but in all honest it is really trivial.
Note: If you do convert your phones name to inspire from desire, carrier billing may not work on some roms.
19a. I don't have h+ anymore only h how do I fix this?
Click to collapse
There is nothing to fix, the H+ is purely cosmetic, essentially H=H+ there is no difference.
You will see this happen when your using a rom based on the desire/pyramid, the images only make a cameo appearance on att.
Click to collapse
Backup and App questions:
20a. What is the best thing to use to back up apps?
Click to collapse
This is a subjective question as well, there are two main apps used to back up apps along with the apps data. Titanium backup /pro and My back up pro.
Note: Restoring backup-ed apps + data may adversely effect the performance of a rom.
21a. What is the best app to use to back up sms and mms?
Click to collapse
Go sms and a few other apps have the ability to backup sms and mms, the phone doesn't natively have this function.
22a. Why won't my app install correctly.
Click to collapse
9 times out of 10 it was downloaded incorrectly, and will need to be re-downloaded and installed. In the other 1% of instances it is a compatibility issue with the rom you are using.

I will be updating with the answers tomorrow night, once I get done with some school work.
If there is something you would like to see added, please let me know. This is in an effort to be as informative as possible and help cut down on the vindicated questions.

Great idea mudknot, keep up the good work.

How about this one.
"I have weak wifi/no internet after rooting"
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa

Sweet. Great work once again, mudknot.

I'VE got one for you. I have a Inspire4G and I am running Coredroid 7.0 and have been trying to change the model name back to Inspire4g from Desire HD. I've tried to edit the\ build.prop=Model name and \manufacturer=HTC. Saved and rebooted but it didn't change the model name. I'm new to all this fun stuff and its just really bothersome to me for some reason. I've also tried to flash the GB_Patch_DHD_to_Inspire4G33.zip and where it's made for Leedroid Rom it changes my Rom name. I've tried to Search the forums here and @ Coredroid.com .But still have no luck at a good/working fix.
If anyone can help me out it would be really appreciated. Thanks

You kind of missed the point of this post.
Its a place to reference questions that are commonly asked, your vest bet would be to post in the cordroid forum after you get 10 posts, or pm one of the coredroid team members.

Something in reference to the missing H/H+ after flashing a rom and the insignificance of it might be in order. Also, perhaps a brief explanation of s-on/s-off might not be a bad idea.

Definitions
Is there a chance you can make a definitions/list section? I have been playing with different roms and have found that ROMS, Kernels, etc can be confusing. What do I flash first? Do I need to flash the LeeKernel if I am going to run Cyanogen? etc.
The thing I see is a lot of development is being done that says something like "based on FroYo" but it takes a bit of research as a noob to figure out what FroYo is. Definitions of Kernels, Roms, etc with a list of what is what may ease this burden.
*Edited* I just re-read the link in MudKnot's Sig... What I am looking for is there. DOH!
Anyway... great site guys. Thanks for doing so much work.

This is awesome. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. Already I see many of the questions I have listed here. Can't wait to read through it when its done!
Edit: Ive seen a few posts about people who may have bricked or soft bricked their phones. Maybe something that addresses that as well?

Guys, why is it that an atrix can support my wifi strongest signal which is a VIZIO. my INspire reads only the normal ViZIO signal which speeds to 2.4ghz (and so does every other devices as my cpu). And I tried with a stock inspire and my custom one.
But the issue lies on one day I used the Atrix from a friend, and it read my VIZIO (HD) which signal runs up to 5ghz. Does it have to do with the radio or is the app. Or there is a hardware issue?

BTW thank you so much for all your work. It's good to see you back. I would have DIED without your sticky when I was rooting my Inspire....well maybe not die....I like to exaggerate sometimes...

Hey mud, you may want to add under the goldcard section the fact that you can reuse a goldcard to root other inspires.

The reason I posted here is because WiFi and radio signals are a common question. And dont get fooled by my newbie estatus. Ive been here from the beginin. I lost one acount by memory loss. And I know the rules I ask you because you have a radio thread

Im guessing thats not the right way to remove ATT stock apps? lol I been browsing forums but can find nothing for HTC Inspire 4G
If your not to sure what you should or shouldn't delete, then the best thing for you would be to just flash a stock rooted rom. Like clearD, tcp, or dilligaf.
Titanium backup is the right way. Why don't you try twopumpchump optimized stock Rom in the development section. We're very helpful over there and will walk you through it. You can flash a ROM that already has the bloat removed.

As long as you have them saved on your sim no. Personal data yes. Apps not if you back them up. Make a nandroid back up before flashing. All you have to do is download the rom, place it on your sd card. Then boot into recovery install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, pick the rom select yes. You just flashed a rom.. As far as I know no one has completely bricked their inspire, even the people who have had corrupted boot loaders have been able to recover.

You will need clock work mod. Just open the app and select backup current rom. It will save everything as it is now so you can return to it later if you need to.

Honestly, I haven't had a chance to sit down at my desktop and try and mess around with it, college has taken up a lot of my time. I will say its a lot more complex then people think it is. It makes me really appreciate the people who bake roms and make themes.
I will probably sit down this weekend try tweeking a few things, and hopefully get it to work with out boot looping. Makes me wish some one lived around here that could teach me a few things I am a visual learner. I will get one working though .

Rooted yet otherwise untouched ROM

Hey guys, I was wondering whether there is a rom out there that has been rooted, but otherwise has had nothing else changed? I like the custom roms and everything, but something somewhere never quite works properly. Any suggestions?

You can't just root your phone...?
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Well, I have the Vodafone crapware on my ROM, so I just want a good stock rom that is rooted. For my old Hero there were a couple around that could be flashed very easily.
I'm using virtuous sensation v1.0.1 and its pretty much the same as stock. Very fast and stable.

Ahh I guess I don't have to start a new thread to ask my question.
All I want is for me to be able to use titanium backup to remove bloatware, rom manager to back things up, and change the pink bootup T-Mobile crap. Will I simply be able to root, add those apps and proceed?
Thanks for the help in advance
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
yes, you will be able to root.
1.) s-off
2.) permRoot
you don't need titaniumbackup to uninstall bloatware. simply use the rootexplorer. navigate to system/app and delete that apps you don't want to be on your phone. but don't forget to mount r/w. and before you do so, make a nandroid backup!
How do we perma root without screwing up our WIFI, yet stay with stock ROM? Seems NO ONE has addressed this here on the forum. Suggesting a custom ROM is a bandaid solution.

No where did they mention how to root. Many people are losing their wifi doing the regular method that is in the massive guide, so they wind up going back to stock. It is not guaranteed to mess up wifi, but if it does, you are just unlucky. (As of now).
I would like to know how others are rooting (perm.) without having these issues.
Matt
I think the responses in this thread pretty much sum up why we want a rooted yet otherwise untouched ROM. From my flashing experience in the past I have found it *extremely* difficult to find a ROM where everything just works. Some well meant tweak always ends up causing some bizarre problem somewhere down the line.

Fair enough - I just flashed the root zip that the Revolution guys linked to and haven't had a single issue.
EDIT: actually it looks like this is solved - just use the correct (newer) su zip as shown in this post

[Q] No net access after root (DNS issue?)

I've tried to root my ATT HTC Inspire a couple of times over the last few week - I always end up w/ the same issue.
Using the XDA Hack Kit 2.3, the process proceeds smoothly . . goldcard, check. down grade, check. after the downgrade I can run setup and have full network access, etc.
But when the S-off / sound fix install step is completed, I am unable to secure access to the internet, period. In set-up, I get an "unable to determine your region" message for HTC sense. I can not set up google services because "the server fails to respond" ... I *can* connect to my WiFi network no problem. I can make calls, but every website I try to access is "not found".
I've tried a number of different radios, all give me the same problem. I'm tempted to say it's some type of DNS error (looks like the symptoms of one, anyway) but I'm not familiar enough w/ Android to know if that's a good guess.
SO I've returned to stock today for the 4th time. Any ideas? I don't see this issue posted anywhere . . if it is, just point me in the right direction, and I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!
i swear this has been covered a hundred times....hell, i have read it 20 times this week....
you are on the downgrade rom, it doesnt work, and isnt meant to be used as a daily driver.
INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM
Read above - - several custom ROMs installed, net access does not come back.
{this is what "I've tried a number of different radios, all give me the same problem." would mean}

Thanks, though, for your quick read and assumptions. Speed isn't quite a substitute for useful advice.

RADIOS != ROMS
good goin there sparky
@timpilcher, hey just happened by this post and thought I could lend a hand. I'm from evo 4g forums.
However, ROM's and radios are two different items. What it sounds like you need to do is flash a custom ROM, and then upgrade your radios. I am sure there is a thread for that within your section that contains the updated radios. These have to do with the actual signal of you're phone, where the ROM is just the interface.

Thank you.
Yes, I guess I was confused. The radio files are named "rom.zip" in the install procedure, and they are placed in the "rom.zip" directory in order to be installed w/ the XDA cmnd script. I'm familiar w/ flashing custom ROMs in PCs, but I've never had need to mess w/ a phone before.
So, yeah, I found it confusing. Thanks for clearing it up.

Here is the link to the radio update page. May have newer radios than what you currently have.

So as speedy Pirateghost said, flash a custom ROM first and then flash the radio that goes with it.

Inspire 4G and the cyanogenmod (questions)

Im new to the android community and phones. I bought an Inspire with gingerbread (2.3.3) and would like to add cyanogenmod to it but the tutorials look so "harmfull" they scare me away so i have some question.
Can i downgrade from 2.3 to android v1?
Have anyone here rooted and flashed the same phone I have?
What is "radio? Can I change it to another one? how can I tell if it will work with my carrier?
please, please, please. READ
these questions you are asking concern me
1. you dont downgrade to v1....because it doesnt exist
2. we all have the same phone as you, otherwise we wouldnt have an inspire section
3. there is an entire thread dedicated to this very subject....look in the dev section.
there are easy to follow guides, tutorials, and walkthroughs here, but you have to READ...there is ZERO excuse for not reading and comprehending this stuff. if it is too much for you, you should NOT be doing any of it, and leave your phone stock
This is why I said..im NEW with this... none of what you helped in some way.

then you have some READING to do. nobody here is going to hold your hand.
ALL the information you seek is already here, but you have to READ
Sorry if all you want is someone to hold your hand and spoonfeed information to you
NEW or not, it doesnt matter. I was NEW to this phone when i got it. I READ, the same way i have done with all my other phones. I READ to understand what i am doing and how to do it.
heres the first thing you should have read when you came to the inspire boards:

its a sticky for a reason

this question has come up several times in the last month. yes it works just fine
Hi, i just rotted the unit and everything was fine
So i decided to use, cyanogenmod, it installed
now i can make calls but it does not connect to the data network portion.
Any ideas?
I noticed the radio baseband is slighly different than the original. could it be?
Sorry. was quick. i entered the APN settings and it is now connecting.. just Edge....before (stock rom) i had "H" (guessing is 3G). Now it only connects to E (edge i assume).
The weird thing is that before whenever i was in an area with only edge It would not allow me to browse but now I can.
any idea jedi master?
you can try a different radio. look at the radio thread in the dev section
Sorry to bother you so much. I was able to solve the radio issue. Now, since the market app wasn't included i followed the guide on how to install gapps but after doing so i can't get pass the boot screen "touch the android to begin".
I try to wipe and reflash but still does not let me do it. Any ideas?
did you touch the android to begin?
Yes, sir. But it will still restart.
i try to wipe data and restart the process but same thing happens.
Tried taping the four corners and an still happening.
Someone said the the gapps file might be corrupted.
Right now cyanogenmod is a pain. is there a way to install another room or the stock one through recovery?
Thanks for all your help!

you can install any rom you like in recovery.
boot into recovery
go to mounts and storage
mount usb storage
on your computer, copy the rom zip onto the phone
back,
install zip file from sdcard
browse to rom zip
confirm flash
Thank you. I am downloading RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_Cingular_US_2.47.502.7_Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_200368_signed.exe.... is this the correct stock?
Does it have to be on ZIP? if so, where can i find stock roms?

no. this will leave you an unrooted stock rom
why dont you browse the dev forum here and look at all the ROM offerings?
I think i will just go with the stock one and the do the same procedure (using the hack kit and just leave it stock rooted....
would that be ok?

Ok that's a good start, you know what you want to do and what results you want to get. I'm assuming however that you don't know how to do that. I can also see you don't like to search. I'll make this easy for you, well actually Tribalartgod made it easy for you. Go to the development thread. You'll see a radio thread. Click it. Read everything in the OP. Go.
Here's the link so I don't hear, you don't have to be a jerk or anyone else want to offer help. I've done more then I should have and more then some other users would.
I offer only this advice, be careful when flashing radios. If you download a corrupt file, I can promise you nothing awesome will happen. Always check the md5 number when flashing radios.
Thank you very much for the help and direction. I understand the criticism, but I didn't understand if radios and kernels had to be congruous. I didn't want to end up with a brick. would you recommend any tool to check md5checksum from android or windows.

The ones to use are ES File Explorer and Astro File Manager. Both are available on the Android Market.

Kernels and radios have no connection in terms of concurrency. Radios and RILs on the other hand are much different. They, if you read, come in pairs and should be matched together for best results. Since you're using an AOSP ROM, there has been discussion about the RIL not having to match the radio for AOSP ROMs, I still do it out of good practice.
Like stated, ESfile explorer, astro manager, or root explorer. While I don't use the first two, I would imagine the process is the same..long press the zip and view the properties or details. As an alternative, if you want to go ext4, ext4 recovery has the check md5 function built into its recovery.
