Attention Developers: Looks like the T-989 has an OTG USB enabled kernel...
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-enable-otg-usb-host-support-on-t-mobile-galaxy-s-ii-t989/
So, have a few questions for the kernel experts:
1) I'm looking for a basic I727-SR kernel (i.e., not OC'd or UV'd, no special boot animation, no BLN, etc). So yes, basically a stock AT&T I727 kernel WITH:
a) OTG USB Host enablement (to be able to r/w, transfer files between phone and a USB flash drive);
b) Battery optimization
c) Stability
2) Anyone aware of an AT&T I727-SR kernel that is not OC'd but has the added functionality of OTG USB hosting?
3) If not, any Devs interested in creating a basically stock kernel but with OTG USB hosting?
Thanks.
Bump. Really... 3 days? Where's the love?
Just curious, aren't there any other Skyrocket users who would like this functionality? OTG-USB will allow you to r/w, transfer files from phone to a usb flash drive simply by plugging flash drive into phone (albeit, you'll need a $1.98 OTG USB adapter). No need to slave the phone to a computer to share/transfer files, pics, music, etc.
There is a new Kernal with OTG in the Dev section, "AT Stock—ish"

I have a stock Skyrocket 2.3.5. It reads FAT32 formatted flash just fine but not NTFS formatted usb drives. i thi k the issue is with filesystem driver support - not OTG per se.

Yes! You need an OTG cable, such as the Motorola Camera Connection Kit. There are others available for less money, but you have to make sure it's really OTG, because it has a different pin configuration.
In addition, you may need to use one of two free apps to help mount the drive--USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG, or Drive Mount.
I've found that it may help to reboot with the drive plugged in (at least the first time).
With this set-up you can use a thumb drive or a large HDD.
My Xoom is fine but my friend bought one and he cant otg with 3.2 unless he roots, right? ... The toshiba does otg out of the box. This was his major buying point. Anyone know why xoom m doesnt yet others will? And yes, he has otg cable.

I tried both of them n failed in both
The drive mount requires busybody. But after installed it, the drive mount apps keep DC.. couldn't use at all
And for the USB mass watcher, when i launch it it asked me to download the latest version, but the latest version isn't compatible with 3.2
What should i do now =(

Sure it is compatible with 3.2. I use it.

I'm not certain if an unrooted Xoom can really access OTG/usb host mode. People say that, but I have been rooted from the start, so I never tested it out.
But i can't even download it from market @@
I jhave it now butkeep fc . Argh
Yeah, I have been rooted since day one as well, so I was unsure of the stock 3.2...

Are you sure you have an OTG cable?
Also, what are you trying to connect? Some people have had issues with thumb drives but not with an HDD.

Does it dim or does it crash? If it dims and you can't do anything, try turning the Xoom (like from landscape to portrait), with auto-rotate enable, and if a dialog box opens, choose an action.
If it is crashing, can you try an HDD like a Passport?
not dim nor crash. The device just suddenly go black n have to boot up
Hey all, I am using jackpotclavins latest build on my rooted kindle fire. Everything is great and I know ICS lost usb mass storage support, so there is apps on the market to do so. one that everyone uses is USB mass storage toggle, Its even on my droidx with ics. Now this app in older versions will mount but it will mount an unknown file system and it will want me to format it. The newer version does it sometimes. I was wonder if it had to do with the kindle fire having multiple partitions on one memory card? tried to post this to the ics thread in developer sforum but i have less than 10 post.
i can't answer your question specifically with respect to usb mass storage toggle, however i'm using an app called dual mount sd ($0.99 on the market) and it's working beautifully for me with the latest ICS build.
Been using the AoKP with kernel 6 for a few days and of course don't have USB but I usually transfer over WIFI anyway (that works fine).
Anytime I must use USB I just boot into recovery, mount, do my thing, then unmount and reboot.
Works fine in a pinch.
I have a problem with the USB mass storage in ICS build 4, for some reason when I connect my phone to the PC it just starts charging and doesn't give me the option of turning the mass storage on. Are there any alternative programs for using usb storage?

Maybe it's just a problem with ICS because it's still in its early Alpha stages. Just go back to CM7 or any Froyo ROM.

It worked in build 3, it's just strange that the option is gone in the newer build, and please if you have a concrete answer for my question please answer, I am aware of the possibilities but I want to use ICS.

If you want to use ICS than you will have to live with these bugs since it is only the fourth release. Anyway, the developers may have done something wrong with it but will probably be able to fix it with ease in the next release.
I highly recommend you to wait for the full version of ICS/CM9 as it is still incomplete!
If you want to use this rom then you have only option, get an adapter

Or use a wireless transfer (through wifi or bt), e.g. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop.

Hey everyone....I've posted many times about my infuse USB port not working to sync to my computer....so my question is this...I'm running cm7 loving it...can I put the cm9 zip on my external SD card through a card reader and flash it on my phone? Is it possible and what steps do I need to do? I would love cm9 or other roms for that matter but its not life and death.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA
No, it has to be on the intr sd...not the ext sd...but why can't you copy it from the ext to the inter from with in your phone?
I copy files all the time to/from my ext to inter sd....
But if you need to return to stock...
I would also put zen tool on there also to back your ROM...
Make sure you have all needed on your phone and copied over to your intr sd.....
Since yore USB is not working? Is it a hardware issue?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Yes its apparently a hardware issue and pretty common I guess on these phones.....just stopped connecting to the computer. It charges but I can't sync.

Try a different usb cable, different usb port, make sure the drivers are installed, enable usb debugging?
Did you select mass storage mode?

Hey There,
We had the same issue with many units and solved all by doing the following:
-Flashing the unit back to stock
-Performing a factory data reset after flashing(This is a must)
On my current Galaxy Nexus I can connect a USB memory stick through an OTG (On The Go) cable and read and write from and to it (root required for write).
How about the Nexus 5? I would not buy it if it could not do that.

Great! Thanks.
Can anybody else confirm this just to make it entirely certain? Has anybody tried to write to USB mass storage?

I've just used Stickmount to mount a USB device and successfully written 2 files to it, so I can confirm USB OTG is working just fine.
But you have to use a 3rd party app in order to write to a usb OTG flash drive or a simple file explorer is sufficient??
Also, you guys mention that no root is required, does this differ from 4.3 ??
On my Nexus 7 II with 4.3 I have to root it in order to use one of those 3rd party apps in order to write files on the usb disk. Is this correct?
The device does not have any mounting capability by default, so you must use apps (or a custom kernel) to do it. That means root.
Wow great to hear this. I have to return my N5 due to a faulty speaker, when i get a new one might drop down to the 16GB now if it has OTG.
Well this is great to know. I didn't want to open my nexus 5 until this was confirmed. I hate that the nexus 4 didn't have this functionality and its the only major gripe I had with that handset. Has anyone tried it nexus 5 with dualshock controllers or keyboards and mice??
OK so I tried it with USB keyboard mouse AND dualshock 3 working great!

To my knowledge you can read from USB memory without root rights, but to write you need root. Example app: StickMount.

Perhaps it is planned obsolescense. They don't want us to be able to expand the memory. They want us to buy a new phone sooner, rather than later.
At least I can find no other explanation.
Can somebody confirm if this is working with 4.4.4 without root? if yes which app?
CyanogenMod 11 M7 has OTG capability built-in
Just a remark on the sidelines. There was the wish that Google include OTG capability in their stock ROM.
They have not done it, but Cyanogen has. CyanogenMod 11 has OTG USB memory capability. Since version M7 it even includes exFAT in addition to FAT32.
So if you really want this capability, there is a way.
