So i'm trying to decide on a new phone. i have an upgrade available on my main line. I don't want to shell out $200-300 for a new phone, but Verizon has CPO (basically refurbished) Droid Charges listed at $50. My current Eros is a refurb and is better than the original i originally received. Anyone else tried a CPO Charge and if so what was your experience?

At this point I would wait for the Nexus.

I think a lot of people here got CLNR (certified like new replacements, refurbs basically) Charges in the Fascinate swap fiasco... speaking for myself yes it has worked flawlessly aside from the data dropping occasionally (and annoyingly) which has been pretty much fixed with EP3H build and higher radios, it always flashes correctly, never borked it doing anything, and the screen looks as great as when I first got it
so yeah if you're looking for a nice 4G phone (that I would say needed heavy tweaking to work right on Froyo, but the new GB OTA seems to be pretty solid) and don't wanna wait for the Nexus or shell out for a newer model if you can get a Charge for $50 its a steal

I love my Charge. It seems pretty unpopular with the phone community, but I don't quite see why. The screen alone makes it worth having. Little features like the HDMI out and from facing camera make it a great phone.
I will admit, stock Froyo was TERRIBLE! Don't get a Charge unless you are going to install a custom ROM with lagfix. But when overclocked the Charge is a beast!
Since you're looking for VALUE, I'd say $50 for a Charge would be an awesome deal. Just know getting into it, that we don't have a huge dev community. Also, a lot of our current devs are leaving (imoseyon changed jobs and is losing his Charge and imnuts has only pledged support for the Charge for the next few months, since he is getting a Nexus).
Check Amazonwireless.com where Charges are free for new lines, maybe even existing lines as well.
I seriously don't know why people would buy anywhere else. The new Nexus will probably be cheaper there as well. Eventually you will be able to get a free Galaxy Nexus there.
When Charges were 300 bucks each, I got mine for $150 each (they were $200 on Amazonwireless, but then they dropped them to $150 a week later, I called and they honored their new price for me.)

People don't buy elsewhere for many reasons, one of them is the fine print. Should you cancel your plan, you have a double ETF. Also, some VZW corporate stores will not help you if there is an issue and you didn't buy the device from them. The biggest reason I wouldn't buy it from Amazon or many other 3rd parties is the added ETF, and the odds of them screwing up my account are much higher, like changing my insurance or data plan.

Keep dreaming. They just rolled out GB update the other day. IF the Charge sees an official ICS release, it is still months away, and I would guess after the Nexus comes, so there is no point whatsoever.
Yeah, i'm not really expecting OFFICIAL support, but hopefully some of the devs will pick up the torch.

regardless of the size of the dev community its still a nice phone... battery life is decent, screen is awesome, its not too heavy or thick, camera is pretty darn good plus I foresee a lot of people picking up Charges and other older-gen 4G phones when the Nexus drops (hopefully some devs/themers) and eBay/craigslist gets flooded... that said we have a good group of dedicated, albeit small in number, devs and themers that even now still put up with us and update constantly lol

Fun little secret: Most of the CLNR Charges sent out in the Fascinate swap were new retail packages with a CLNR sticker pasted over the original.
got mine as a CPO back in late August/Early September.
also got my wife the iPhone. my Charge has been great thus far - especially with the help of these fine folks here on XDA and Chargeforums.com, I've been able to get the most out of it - so it really won't matter if you get a CPO. the warranty is still the same....

I just started a new contract with T-Mo Tuesday night, and got the Galaxy S 4G for free. (It was a one night special!) It seems like a solid phone, and my only complaints so far are the low internal memory (which I understand can largely be fixed by rooting and moving apps to the SD) and the occasional sluggishness. I'm also a little worried about upgrades of the OS, as I've heard some bad things about Samsung in this regard.
How big a difference would I see with the G2X? Is it worth the possible extra $200 I'd have to shell out to get it, considering I got the SGS4G for free?

as a previous VIBRANT and SGS4G owner i will tell you GET IT!
dual core>single
1080p camera/mirrioring>****ty 4g no flash camera
DIVEX!
there are many more
do research before you buy but YES it is a upgrade its the top phone to buy right now (till the SGS2 comes out)
and if you still got your 14days to exchange it do it! (if you still are in your 14 day grace period you WILL NOT have to pay a xtra 200 bucks! just pm me and ill tell you more!)
and if you dont like it im sure you can sell on ebay for close to 400-500 bucks!
(i hated the fact that the vibrant had 16GB internal memory but the 4G did not so i also switched it for the G2x....)
good luck and hope i helped!
Its not worth the $200. I have only used one in the store, but i would hardly call it a quantum leap in terms of features or speed.
Spend the $200 on a used tablet instead

You may have gotten the phone for free, but its still a 2-year contract. A 2 year contract on a phone that is basically a vibrant with 4g and ffc that came out July 2010. In my opinion I would get a phone that is newer technology. I love my vibrant a lot and its a fantastic device, but I would not however sign up for a 2-year contract on a 9 month old phone. If you do not change phones often then free isnt a bad thing at all, just wish it was newer. My 0.2 cents
The 2-year contract is what is making me consider the switch, even if I do have to shell out some cash to do so. (I EXPECTED to have to spend money up front, just caught a break on that SGS4G deal.)

I understand. I mean a free phone is always awesome lol, just hard to push contract on 9month old phone into my head. I go through 2-3 phones a year so I always buy mine outright, but that isnt an option for everyone. The SGS4g is a great device and still impressive with a custom rom on it. Cheers

You wont have to shell out any more money since you are still under 14 days. Just go to the store with a reciept and the phone and ask for an exchange. Unfortunately ive had my galaxy s 4g since launch so im pretty much SCREWED.

I think he will have to shell out 199 for the G2X vs the FREE for the Vibrant4G thats with 2 Year Contract.
And yeah I would take the Vibrant4G back and pay the 199 and get the G2X. You could also use the Equipment Installment Plan and only pay like $50 I think. and then 50 or 100 a month untill the 199 is payed off.
The Vibrant was free but like said before is about a year old vs something that is brand new. If Im going to sign a 2 year contract might as well get the latest and best because without the 2 year contract your looking at 499.
The G2X also doesn't feel like it'll break if you look at it wrong.
Possible solutiom
Look for my thread in the G2X forums, it has info you may be interested in. Sorry I cant post link, i'm using my cell for this reply.
Actually, it's the Galaxy S 4G I got for free, not the Vibrant. I think it is working out for me because there were other issues with my account surrounding my plan based on what I was told versus what I was actually going to be charged. Basically, I've been getting the runaround on a few things, have been getting miffed, and I think they are trying to make me happy at this point.

Depending on how fast he trying to sale his Vibrant4G/GalaxyS4G you can get it gone quick on craigslist.
200-250 Will get it sold day one especially if you put it up on a Thursday/Friday
300-350 Might take a min to sale on craigslist but should deffinetly sale.
Then come out of pocket around 200-250 and get the G2X

I would stay away from SGS 4G if I was you because the application storage is too low for me.
G2x, on the other hand, has nearly 2GB for applications which is necessary for games (and newer applications take up to 50MB).
Anyone else a bit taken back by the drastic price drops on the G2X? Not in a good way... I feel like the G2X could be the Vibrant all over again...

"The best technology never makes you think about it. It's just always brilliant."
- LG G2X Amazon Page
I'm sorry but with all the problems this phone has against it (similar to the Vibrant): Overheating, Shotty Network/Data Connections, Reboots, Lock-ups it seems like T-Mobile is readying for another magic trick. Granted, from what I've gathered reading these forums certain problems (mentioned above) could be completely unrelated. I personally feel that the poorly tinkered network/data connect software T-Mobile f***ed into this phone coupled with the completely separate battery issues are reeking havoc on the phones in a variety of ways.
Just a thought.
As a past Vibrant user (unfortunately) I felt compelled to report the similarities arising again... and all the Vibrant base got [after their woes] was a ****ty Froyo update and the Samsung Galaxy S 4G releasing swiftly via T-Mobile.
I really thought the Vibrant must've been a fluke for T-Mobile, as it was my first leap into the smartphone & Android markets (came from a flip phone, no txts or data). Seems I was wrong in my judgement for trusting them with a second/different product. Don't get me wrong... This phone is great (in theory) but so far it is dragging with bugs and this leaves me torn... =/

Hm... perhaps. I'll think it over a nice bowl to cool the thoughts down a bit lol, 4:20 is coming a little early this morning I suppose.
I guess I just want a phone that works [ultimately]... Seems like the T-Mobile way is to release half-assed, beta quality products (at least in these eyes, I understand experiences vary). I went along thinking T-Mobile was a great company until I jumped on the Android bandwagon. Guess one can't get too butt-hurt over a company acting as soulless as they do sometimes... it's in their nature. =/
Coming from a vibrant I see where u are coming from. It was the biggest pile of a phone I have ever had. It was also my first android experience after being an avid bb user.
I do see some short comings in my g2x but I hope things don't get bad. I also despise Samsung as a company and blame the vibrant fails on them. It seems ateast to me they push a product hard and never support it. They did the same thing on a TV I bought. After there lack of support on the vibrant I will never own another Samsung product. I just hope the g2x is not the same way.

I respect your point of view but I disagree with you.
I come from a Galaxy S 4G and this phone is way better and faster.
If you are experiencing those kind of issues, I would advise you to exchange it. I haven't really experience those kind of issues and the only real problem to me has been data disconnecting.
Now that I have flashed many ROM's I have come to the conclusion that EB 1.04 is the best and not many disconnections since I settle.

Oh well I guess thats not so bad.
This is always the case with phones through places like Walmart and Amazon.
Long story short: broke my Sidekick, need a new phone.
the only phones I'm interested in is another Sidekick ($380), or a mytouch 4g slide (at least $500). problem is, even though my contract has run only a few months, it's actually cheaper to pay the cancellation fee (max $200) and switch to another provider than to buy a new phone unsubsidized, which afaik, is all t-mobile will allow. (kind of a screwed up business model, huh?)
so since its almost black friday in 6 hours or so,, does anyone know of a good sale on either Mytouch 4g slide, or even the Sidekick?
May want to check t mobiles website. You can always buy a refurbished phone as well.

thanks for the suggestions guys, but the only good deal I found at all was for the Samsung Transform Ultra, on Boost Mobile. so I went for that, I think I'll be pretty happy to finally have real stock android rather than a Sense/Touchwiz infection.
I did look for deals on tmobile phones, but they were all for new contracts and upgrades ONLY. I even got on the customer service line twice and explained to them that 1. I could not keep using the broken phone, and 2. the ONLY adequate replacements are twice the cost of cancelling; they did not seem to have a contingency for this. oh well, their loss. my new phone, of course, will have a protection plan, but still, Tmobile really should rethink their replacement system.

Just sell your cell phone contract to a third party.
well now that i'm on Boost, I've been noticing that If I started a new contract with Tmobile under the current black friday weekend deals, I could get this or several other phones free and then actually recoup some of the money I just spent, provided I return the Boost phone I just bought. so:
in general, how good is this phone? I noticed it seemed smooth and lagless in store, but of course that's just a store model without a bunch of additional apps from the market. I'm mostly wondering if Sense causes problems at all regarding compatibility with any apps, or stability problems that wouldn't be expected to happen on a stock 2.3 rom. I have a stock 2.3 phone now, so that could be a risky change; however, this phone I have is only $230 new, single core, and is known for a screen sensitivity problem that may get worse on my handset, but may not.
also, could I expect any problems or side effects from rooting? one of my goals in that, if I get the MT4GS, will be to quickly turn the "genius" button into a search button. that cause problems for anyone? I did the same thing on the Sidekick, and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. but it may have just been that particular phone.

Now that the Nexus is available, I am wondering if it would be worth dumping my DC for the Nexus. I would have to pay the full price for it.
Other than just wanting something new, I am not sure I can justify it. Stock rooted GB seems to be working well on my Charge. The only complaint I have is the lousy radio performance at work which sucks battery down to nothing in a half a day. I am not convinced the Nexus wouldn't do the same thing.
Wondering what others think about making the switch.

I never understood why people would pay full price for a smartphone regardless of how cool the new technology is. You can buy a pretty nice laptop/desktop or tablet for that price so if your current phone does everything you want, why not wait until you are eligible for an upgrade?
I have a hard time paying the $200-300 for a new phone as part of an upgrade, nevermind $600-700.
That being said, I like everything about the Nexus EXCEPT the fact that you can't expand the memory.

The only reason i would pay full for the nexus is if i was making serious money with apps and wanted to make sure they were compatible with ICS and 720p.

Point well taken. That is part of the decision. I might want to buy a tablet for that kind of money. Even if I could sell my Charge on eBay for say, ~$200 would the Nexus be that much cooler than the Charge? Probably not.
We drool for a long time in anticipation of these new devices but when the day comes and the "buy" button is clicked, it is all downhill from there...
I considered it but then thought about what I'd actually be gaining as far as everyday use. Yes, it's more powerful than the charge but not head and shoulders above the latest and greatest. The hardware is just nothing out of this world special. ICS is about all it really has going for it and soon all new phones will have it. Now that most of the kinks with my Charge have been smoothed out I don't see the need to upgrade for a while. I understand the impulse to always get the newest tech though. The thing with Android handsets is that you really don't have to wait around very long for another new and cool phone to come out. Which is a double edged sword because it means your new and cool phone won't be considered new and cool for long. However, it is easy to pick up used android phones a few months after release for fairly cheap. I see multiple Craigslist ads in my area for Charges for $200-$300. I paid $299 when I upgraded! To each his own but I'm waiting.
I'm certainly gonna wait until these phones are out in "the wild" on Verizon's network. I'm not totally convinced that Samsung has the LTE thing figured out. I bought my charge the day they came out and have never been completely happy with call quality or data connectivity. I live smack in the center of a huge 4g area in Los Angeles and everyone on 3G phones are happy as larks.
I'm done being an early adopter and beta tester for Samsung so I'll wait a month or so and read their forums and see who's complaining about what.
Let's see. it's bigger, heavier and slower than my rooted Charge. I don't think so...

The charge is still pretty new to me even tho I had it since launch...I would love to have the nexus but not for 300(I have a line that has an upgrade). I just paid for this phone so ill keep it at least a year..I'm sure by summer there will be some quad core devices out there that will put galaxy nexus to shame

I was sooo excited about a Nexus device coming to Vzn and so let down when I saw someone point out that it didn't have a microSD slot.
This is supposed to show off what an Android Phone "Should Be", but no Android phone should be without a microSD card.
The internal MMC better be MUCH faster than a class 10 microSD. I'm going to wait to see some stats on read/write performance.

Look at it from Google's perspective. They want you to use their cloud services, and most of what the average user does with their phone can be done from the cloud. By not including an SD card or mass storage drivers, they can force people to use their cloud services. From Google's perspective, this does show off what an Android phone should be.
I use Google's cloud services extensively, and I still don't agree with the decision, but as a businessman, I understand it.

It's 7g heavier, and the dimensions are of a negligible difference (<6mm difference in any direction) and it's most certainly not slower either. I'd suggest trolling somewhere else.
I won't be getting a nexus... the combination of having no upgrade yet and me losing interest in it with all the hype and bungled release has led me to the decision to stick with my Charge for now
I'd rather just wait and take my pick of the next Q1/Q2 Samsung or HTC superphones (which I believe will match or beat the nexus spec-wise, the only thing I'll miss will be the unbloated pure Google goodness)

I'm jumping from my Charge to the Nexus. I got my Charge through the Fascinate issue so I didn't have to use my upgrade. I ordered it yesterday online. I had some corporate discount so it was $250 minus a $100 gift card I had. So I got it for $172. Plus I figure I can sell my Charge for $200, so I came out ahead. I went to the VZW store and played with it. Everything is fast and smooth! Can't wait for it!
Ill be going to the nexus, but only because I happen to need a home phone line. So im getting the $149 AmazonWireless deal, with $100 Amazon gift card for activating with a hotspot, a cost ill cover by selling my Charge - then ill just roll the line over into a Home Phone connect.
I ordered my Nexus this morning. My Charge will be my backup.

I am. ICS is in a whole different league in my opinion.
Plus it'll be nice to be able to confirm compatibility with the apps I develop.

I'd have one already if my wife didn't put the axe to it. I need to sell my charge first.
If you are like me and don't like threads saying bye to the sub-forum because the user is changing devices feel free to skip the whole rest of this. I usually don't like those threads either.
However, with tongue firmly planted in cheek:
I'm ditching this Droid Charge because:
It didn't wash the windows
It didn't bring about world peace (yes that comes after washing the windows. I likes some clean windows, I do.)
It didn't feed the hungry or clothe the nekked...and man some of those ugly people need some clothes! Why won't this phone stop the insanity?
It didn't provide notifications while the sender was typing the message or before. Really, I would have rather had the notification before the sender woke up that day.
The voices in the phone kept talking to me and I didn't like what they had to say. "If you would like to make a call..."
I couldn't find the Any Key. Hell, I couldn't find any keys period. There were a couple of buttons, but no keys. How the hell am I supposed to open locks without any key?
The battery wouldn't charge itself. I mean, come one. Why is this too much to ask? I just want a phone that absorbs energy from the room...preferably from iPhones. I'd love it if my friend's iPhones batteries would die even faster when my phone was in the room. The OEM developers really dropped the ball on this one.
All kidding aside: This Droid Charge hasn't been stable since I got it. It was 10x better than the Fascinate garbage I came from. I've loaded ROM after ROM and some work better than others. All of them are better than the stock experience and the XDA / RootzWiki developers have my thanks for their help and time. I've had stability problems from day one and even once I'd get them ironed out stability problems would come back regardless of kernel. I've reloaded the PIT and stock ROMS plenty of times. I haven't overclocked or undervolted and this thing acts like I'm running an aggressive scheme.
So, I'm jumping ship to the Droid Razr Maxx. It will be here on Tuesday. Maybe I can sell this thing on eBay for a few bucks with the docks and extra batteries. I didn't want a Motorola phone, but I haven't been impressed with the chances I've given Samsung, so time to try something new. I'm glad that the Droid Razr Maxx has the Super AMOLED screen.
So long and thanks for all the fish.
I envy you....i will wait one year with the phone before i start harrassing vzw for an early upgrade.
Droid Charge 4G LTE
I've been looking myself as well for an upgrade too but my official upgrade doesn't come for another year. My line isn't the "master line" in the family plan that my line is part of. Also, I think we got the family plan after they stopped offering early upgrades for the "master line."
So that means I do one of the following...
Hit up eBay and see if I can get a phone there at a decent price. I'm hoping I can snag a Galaxy Nexus but some of the prices for those phones are going ridiculously high.
Save up and buy the phone at full price.

I had to sat good bye also. Didnt have an upgrade so paid retail for 2 razr maxx. It has been the best phone to date for me atleast. Stock or Rooted it is a great phone and havent had a complaint. By the way I have 2 charges for sale with extras if anyone interested.
Congrats on being able to switch. We all should expect/own a phone that works. For some, the Charge fits the bill. Unfortunately, for others, the Charge is plagued by many flaws.
Personally, I'm waiting for CTIA(and whenever Samsung's event is) to see what's available for Verizon. I have an early upgrade available, but I'll wait it out.

Well everyone that said that their gps worked for them no problem it never worked for use. It took forever. When my wife travels she takes enough stuff with her and needed something that worked. With the maxx we got everything we needed. A phone that locked on within 30 seconds, battery life that is incredible. Most everything we needed was there. People will say buy used. With new we get a warranty and the assurion protection. These can be used for a write off as a business expense.
Scored a Samsung Galaxy Nexus for $400 on Craigslist. I already verified the ESN with Verizon and they say that the ESN is clean. In an hour or so I'm going to be going with a friend of mine to go pick the phone up in a Verizon Retail Store to have the phone checked out by a Verizon store representative as well as activate it on my account.
It has been a nice ride with the Droid Charge but it is time to move on and getting a Galaxy Nexus for $400 is like a dream come true. It is a steal of a deal.
We will definitely miss you... you've been 1 of the better ones around here for a long time.... you have helped more people than I can count... enjoy your new phone you deserve it...

I'll stay around here helping people with this phone. I'm not going to take down my one Android site with all of the helpful info on it, that would be a great disservice to the community. I'm going to be keeping the Droid Charge for tinkering and whatnot.

I wouldn't buy moto personally, others seem to like it and from the looks of it it's really smooth. After playing with my moms droid 4, it seems blur makes everything difficult and things aren't as easy to set\ find things (probably been on touchwiz too long and need to explore others). My sister likes her droid 3 and my mom loves hers D4, I hope you will too with the MAXX. Good luck, enjoy that awesome machine!
By the looks of how technolgy for android is acknowledging upgrading our batterys to high mah batterys it seems more of these companys will follow motos lead. Especially since 4g practically destroys these batterys. By the time I have a upgrade devices with quad core and better batterys should be available. Kinda worth the wait.
