Cyanogen ROM hangs after a backup - HTC Desire S

Hi,
I've been having problems with my Cyanogen for quite a while. After a backup, my phone would freeze up, with the only way to recover is by removing the battery (I tried Power + Vol Down to no avail). Granted, I don't regularly create backups, but when I do, I would be able to use the phone from a few seconds to a minute before it freezes completely. The only way to correct it is by wiping and formatting all system and cache in the recovery console and then do a restore. And even then, it would take a couple of tries before the ROM becomes stable again (i.e. never hangs).
I'm using 4EXT Recovery ((latest version as of this writing 2.2.7-RC5) and the latest 4EXT Updater (2.1.3if I recall correctly).
Here's the info of my HBOOT:
Alpharev
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.98.1002
RADIO-38.03.02.15_M
eMMC-boot
I'm using the kernel that comes with CyamogenMod 7.1:
2.6.35.14-cyanogenmod+
[email protected]#1
and my radio is:
20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.15_M
I came from a former custom ROM (LBC Mod) and I never experienced this kind of problem there. However, I really want to stay with Cyanogen as it's super snappy and uber efficient. But it's unfortunate the the phone would keep hanging up on me on a backup/restore

[Q] Is phone bricked?

Booted into recovery today to install the latest Energy ROM on my Sensation and during the process an error message popped up and it said installation failed, then I rebooted the phone and it's just stuck on the HTC screen. If I pull the battery I can boot into recovery, but I'm not sure what I should try from there, I don't want to make things worse.
Info on screen when I power on and vol down is as follows in case it's important.

If you can boot into recovery, you should be able to flash a new ROM.
I'm assuming you didn't take a Nandroid backup before flashing?

if you can still boot into the boot loader ie if it still turns on than no you are not bricked. brick = nothing happens when you hit the power button ie it wont even turn on to the htc screen or boatloader. absolutely nothing happens, dead. as for your problem im not sure if i know what the answer is. hopefully you did a nandroid before you tried to flash a different rom. if so restore the back up and your back and running. if not i dont know what else to tell you other than flashing your stock ruu. keep in mind if you do this you need to run revolutionary again install cwm and root again (enrgy rom is already rooted so skip the rooting and flash that.) before you flash this time make a nandroid backup. hope this helps
Thanks very much for the answers, just re-downloaded Energy ROM and copied it on to the SD card using my card reader and it appears to have installed successfully this time, stupidly I'd remembered to do a Titanium Backup of my apps and system data but forgotten to do a nandroid backup, slaps self on the wrist and won't forget to do that again.
All I can think is that it must have been a corrupt download, mental note to check MD5 checksums from now on

[Q] Get out from Boot Loop

Hi all! I will appreciate if you help me with this.
I've got last OTA update with 2.3.5, but I'm really disappointed of Sense 3.0
So I've decided to install a custom ROM for the first time. I've heard of Revolutionary S-OFF but It doesn't support HBOOT 2.00.0002
I've found other way to unlock my Desire S. I did this with htcdev site. Then I've installed 4EXPRecovery and turn on root on my phone. All was successful until I reached to installing custom ROM. I've put Cyanogen nightly ROM to SD card, then entered recovery and wiped system. Then installed ROM from zip. This was successful but I stucked in white screen with HTC logo when trying to boot the device.
I've tried many ROMs like Cyanogen, MIUI, Virtue etc. Each time attempts resulting into white HTC screen.
Now I have

What can I do to revive my device?

Before installing new Rom is it necessary to perform a full wipe (data, system and cache). Make a full wipe and try again. Make also a Goldcard - this will erase all the data on your SDcard, so make a backup first (check the tool here) an try to flash the ROM with it.

Never ending bootloop after CM10? A little special case perhaps :/

Never ending bootloop after CM10?
Hello guys. I'm not panicking TOO much because I trust you guys know how to fix this...hopefully : (
I woke up today and thought I'd try out CM10. I downloaded the ROM and did everything as I normally would and flashed it, then attempted to flash a GAPPS but it error'd out.. weird. I booted into CM10 just fine without any errors but when I plugged in my phone to transfer over a new JBapps my phone wasn't recognizable by my PC. I thought I'd just install a ROM that would allow my phone to be recognized (So I could transfer the Jbapps) so I installed CleanRom 4.5 and while it was installing I went to take a shower. I came back and it was still booting up and I immediately thought "uh oh"
So this leaves me here now with my phone stuck booting up and shutting itself down... it won't stay off either. I tried holding Power+Volume Down and it just keeps turning on and turning off. So getting into recovery is a toughy...
Any way to fix this? Thanks guys. appreciate it
EDIT: I was playing around trying every possible button combination and just holding down Volume button seemed to work. I'm now in the White screen where it allows me to FastBoot, Recovery, Factory Reset, etc.
What can I do from here? thanks... I'm still kind of new to this : )
Reboot into recovery (use volume keys to scroll and press power button to select), factory reset, then install.
If that doesn't work, did you update to 2.20 stock at all?

Factory Reset results in bootloop. This is what I see on my screen right now.

I do not believe I updated to 2.20.
EDIT:
I think I can fix it myself if someone points me in the direction of a good guide to Unbrick the phone for the HTC One XL, does anyone know of a good way?
Can u get into recovery?

From bootloader select recovery once in recovery factory reset then wipe /system then reinstall CM10 boot once then enter back into recovery and reflash gapps oh and redownload gapps the one you have might be corrupted or something.
As for the usb not mounting under CM10 that is a known issue and it can be fixed by manually installing the windows driver in device manager. When you plug your phone and mount it to windows you will get windows trying to install some HTC MTP driver and then it will fail. Go into device manager find that driver then select update driver, browse computer for driver, then let me pick from a list of device drivers, select disk drive and hit finish. This will let you mount your phone in windows.
I am having an issue similiar to the endless boot too, but mine is also unmounted. =( I am pretty new at all this and i was in the process of uninstalling king_kang and was going to just restore factory. So I did that and then I had made a backup before i instaled it, so I tried to instal that and for some reason after i did when my phone was booting back up it just stopped and rebooted again. Thats when this all started =[
any help anyone could give me would be appriciated or point me into a direction to look for answers...there is so much info on these forums and I have been combing through for hours ...

Go find a stock ROM and flash it, just because you factory reset doesn't mean that your phone reverts back to the stock rom.
Flash it like you would any other rom. but make sure you wipe system/cache/dalvik.

You're on HBOOT 1.14. You need to fastboot flash boot boot.img after you flash a new rom. You can find boot.img by unzipping the rom.
Hey thank you guys for the responses. I am really stuck, LoL. I am really just learning about the modding and unlocking of phones. I have done quite a bit of reading about it and decided it wasn't going to learn anymore w/o playing with it. I guess i was wrong tho =]. I will try your suggestions tomorrow, and I am confident that I am still about to do something to fix it and its not "bricked". I know that when I hooked it up to my PC HTCSync recognized it and popped up as did windows driver installer, which was weird because I made sure to install the drivers before i went on this little adventure. Also, i am able to get the the Bootloader menu and pop into Recovery, the only thing that is worrisome is that once I am in Recovery (TWRP) I can not access the SIM data, i think. When I try to clear the Caches and System I get a not mounted error =\.
Anyways, once again, I really appriciate the feed back and tomorrow when I try your suggestions I'll post my results.. =]
Yea man a boot loop is good!! Well I mean its not fantastic, but better than trying to turn it on and just seeing your reflection! That's an easy fix

[Q] Help - Phone not loading past HTC logo

I recently bought a HTC Desire S secondhand, however when it arrived I turned it on to find that it just displays the HTC logo then a black screen. It has 4ext installed - which is what loads when try to do a factory reset.
I have no experience with installing custom ROMs but I'm pretty good at following instructions. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to tell me how to fix this!
Some more information, the boot loader menu says:

Read through sticky thread in General section it will get you started.

Not sure what version of 4EXT you have on your phone. Recommend you update it to a newer, if not the latest, version before you start flashing. Download recovery image file and flash via fastboot. Before installing a new ROM, choose "format all partitions except SD card' for a complete wipe.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377745
Your phone is S-on so remember to flash boot.img whenever you flash a new ROM, otherwise it would mostly fail to boot.
Try Cyanogenmod first, It's not the latest and greatest, but a good and safe ROM to get you started

i AM UNABLE TO GET INTO THE DEVICE BUT I AM ABLE TO USE FASTBOOT USB. AND RECOVERY THRU TWRP. i WOULD RATHER REFLASH CWMR AS THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE GOTO FOR RECOVERIES, NOT TOO SURE ABOUT TWRP. i WOULD REALLY LIKE A STEP BY STEP TO AT THE VERY LEAST GET MY STOCK ROM BACK UP AND RUNNING, THOUGH EVEN BETTER IF I COULD USE A 4.4. ROM. THE DEVICE WAS ROOTED BEFORE I FUDGED UP. i WOULD HAVE BACKED UP MY EXISTING ROM BUT HAD NOT ENOUGH SPACE. YA LIVE AND YA LEARN. WAS TOLD SOMEWHERE TO FLASH ROM THRU FASTBOOT BUT NOT ENTIRELY SURE HOW THAT WORKS. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. THIS IS MY ONLY DEVICE AT THE MOMENT AND NEEDING ABIT OF GUIDANCE. THANKS GUYS AND GALS
