Insane overnight battery drain - HTC Sensation

I have seen a small improvement by charging before I go to bed, unplugging it from the wall and leave the phone on during the night with WIFI on and no apps running.
When I do that, and wake up in the morning, the battery is still at 100% and I can get a good day with heavy use, and a day and a half with moderate use easily.
However, last night, I needed the phone to be on as I was on call for work this morning so I charged it and then unplugged. But turned WIFI off as I did not want whatsapp msgs to disturb.
No apps were running, and the signal is just as strong as always (which isn't great but is is the same as always), but when I woke up after 8 hours, the battery has completely drained overnight to an alarming 12%!!
When I looked to see what was using the battery, Cell Standby has used 39% and Phone Idle 40%, the screen was only on for 3mins during that time.
My settings for apps are that they only sync manually or when opened, so nothing was running.
When I looked at the awake time, it shows that the phone has not been awake.
So I cannot understand why by turning WIFI off, the phone will drain overnight!
In a normal day Cell Standby and Phone Idle contribute very little to the battery usage in my case, but I just can't understand what has caused this to happen.
Any help appreciated, as I am quite alarmed thinking that my battery can die overnight when it has not been used.
Thanks

I had the same problem! I left my phone at 100% and turned it off over night. And the next morning it was at 7%!!
Sooooo many problems with the sensation, I am soon change my phone.

In your pictures i can see that you have bad signal. With this bad signal the phone will try to get a better signal all the time and this uses much battery.
Try it over night at a place with better signal and look how much battery it uses. And you can charge to 100% and then wipe batterystats in recovery maybe that helps.

I have similar problem Hi friends,
I use faux123 kernel for 2 weeks + ARHD 4.1.7. All things was good, in sleep time my phone was not do any drain. I meen if the battery was fully charged it was 100% at morning (phone was set to flight mode) and even after starting the phone it was staing at 100% for one hour. And i was get 18 hours for hard working with it.
But it's 2 days it drains so fast. It drain 20% of battery in 5 hour sleep time in flight mode. And i just have 8 hour to work with my phone.
Do you know wath is problem?
wath should i do?

Did you install any new apps or changed some settings in an app wich can cause this drain?
Wiped batterystats in recovery?
Did you change the CPUFREQ? Because i think faux kernel is at 1,7GhZ after flashing it. You can use faux clock to change the Kernel settings.

I have always the same signal, it varies from 2 to 4 bar, when I took the screenshot went down to 1 but I normally have a bit more.
So, with the same signal and WIFI on, when I wake up in the morning I still have 100%, this is what I don't get!

Not any power using app, just 2 game without playing them.
The latest official faux kernel's clock is 1.566 max.
I do use System tuner to control CPU and under volting.
This can make problem?

Did you download the latest fota update?
Because this update gave me also a huge drain in battery life. My solution was deleting my htc peep account in synchronization & accounts.
The drain was gone afterwards

The latest FOTA is not available on three uk yet, and I am on stock rom.
Haven't installed any apps in the last week...
The only trigger was turning WIFI off, hence why I am confused

Bcuz with your WiFi on the phone is not switching through data signals which uses less battery. I live in a bad signal area. So calls work great but data signal is crappy, goes from 2G to 4G to 2G..so with WiFi on for data there is no need to constantly try to grab a better data signal.

But data was also turned off, and I am only on a 3G network, not 2G available with my carrier.

My point here is that when I go on hols soon I will not be using data as I will be abroad, and WIFI only once a day maybe as I will be out and about.
So from last night's performance, does that mean I will only get 8 hours??
It is weird...

I was getting some insane battery drains my self after flashing the ARHD 3.X.X the one turning the sensation to XE , allthough I had very good signal and my phone fully recharged in the morning was like 61% for uknown reasons then I jumped to ARHD 4.1.7 and since then everything is fine .I don't understand though why some people blame the phone for it.to me it appears to be more like software tweaks and twists related to battery management the sensation is amazing phone I have it for a month and honestly I never regret the day i picked it when I had to make the choice senny or sg2

Ok, it sims i was messed with some bad tweaking.
I did a full wipe and reflashing the rom and all other things and now it works fine.
No drain in sleep time and now it's 8 hours my phone is on battery and still battery is %100 full.

Battery prob is now worse!

I'm rooted first of all.
Well, wifi, all GPS, and bluetooth off.
my battery was okay, it lasted for a day mostly. and I think about 2 days ago, the battery suddenly getting worse. Everything remains same. I haven't changed any option, but the bettry is suddenly worse.
I don't use my phone that much. like I got a phone call yesterday and today? no texting, no internet, no app uses.
I charged my battery full(til 11am or til noon), then it dies before 5pm.
(Today I charged my phone til 9:40am, got only one single phone call lasted 1-2mins, and my battery is already 47%.)
It's just terrible! Anyone has same prob????
I'm in California BTW.

I'm rooted and I think it's stock rom.
I just followed the manual perm root process.
It's weird because under same conditions, battery got totally worse than before. It lasted at least for a day, but now, it lasts only 4-5 hrs with same amount of usage under same conditions.
ever figure this out?
Just rooting will not change anything to your battery life. You need to install a rom or a different kernel in order for it to change anything.
Mine too has gotten worse in the last week. I am not rooted. At this point my battery is draining roughly 25% per hour with little or no use. Spare parts shows the most usage on my phone is 0. I have tried getting rid of weather bug, Pandora and sirius. I tried looking for something to explain exactly why 0 takes up 10x more battery than Android system itself and I have came to the conclusion that I am lost. Any direction to the correct forum topic would be appreciated.

Have you tried the "Blockbuster" mod?
1) open the Blockbuster Application, it should ask you to update.
2) once the update has finished open the application back up and
3) navigate to Menu>Settings> "Disable Movie Updates"
Users have reported better battery life.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have updated and disabled the Blockbuster app. Better yet even I just rebooted my phone and it drained 12% on the battery. How is that possible. I am using my stock battery now and not the extended, so the % would be different with the stock compared to my extended but really I don't think it should use 12% on a reboot.

All GPS was off, bluetooth off, Wifi off, everything off except 4G. I sent a text and received a text, and the battery drained to 46%. After a few mins with no use of the phone, the battery warning sound played. So I had to charge my phone at that point. It is just totally weird. Under same condition and same usage of the phone, the battery lasted for a day at least. (4G was on at the point.) I don't know what cause this problem. Anyways, I just unrooted mine and got a software update via OTA. I don't know if this will fix the problem. Any luck to you yet?
I am going to charge tonight and try current settings tomorrow and see how long battery last. It is to the point if I have to turn all this stuff off, doesn't it defeat the purpose of having a smartphone?

Just yesterday my battery life took a serious nose dive. I've adjusted all the settings I can and the battery is dropping like a drunk girl's panties...

That's about what mine took on average to reboot. 10-12%.
I'm at 72% after 11 hours of idle usage and that's on the 2750mah extended battery. That would put me at 46% after 12 hours having not touched the phone once. I literally fell asleep as I took it off the charger...
Something is jacked up and I don't know what.
Rooted, Virus ROM B3, 1.8G kernel (forget which).
I've gone to Imoseyon's Sense lean kernel, special edition.
We'll see how that goes...?
Wanted to report back as I think the culprit may be the wireless tether app.
I turned GPS, WiFi and all my sync's back on and the phone is back to giving me decent battery life.
I did some changes with the tether app and I'll report back to see if my suspicions are correct.

Informal battery test

There are a lot of battery threads out there, but i wanted to try something new. I want to see how much our phones drain in real world situations. So here are the rules:
1. Use your phone normally for ten minutes.
2. Note your battery percent at the beginning and then at the end.
3. Post details about what you did, what ROM you're using, and the percent battery drain.
Hopefully we can compare our experiences and learn something.
I used my phone to surf a few websites, send one text, and use xda app. Started at 80% and ended at 77%. Using rcmix3d at 50% brightness.
I know there are tons of factors that affect battery drain, and I'm not trying to be scientific. I'm just curious how we all compare!

The only way you will get a decent idea is to test with others in your area as it will depend alot in signal strength. I would use more battery if I was bouncing between signals instead of having a steady connection.

Screen-on time is the only thing I ever look at. I've only managed to squeeze about 5h45m, out the sense-based gb ROM I've been using.
The phone does really well in standby on most if not all roms that have been flashed properly, don't have non-rom-related battery hogging app issues, and, as zelendel mentioned, signal issues.
It's this big fat screen that's obviously the biggest battery sucker.

I know there are many many factors that go into battery performance, I'm just curious what other people actually get when using their phones.

I've gotten accustomed to putting my phone on the charger before bed as well. Mine pretty much will last the entire day... Off charger at ~8-9am, back on it at ~12am.
Averaging about 5 hrs screen on time with usually no voice calls of significant length, WiFi on, gps off, relatively stable signal.
I'm running Inspired Ace 1.0.1, and the 04.11_M2 radio. Seems I was getting a little better with the OTA radio, but signal fluctuated a lot more on that one, than with the 04.11_M2.
Edit: doesn't really use your testing procedure, just more of a general feeling, as there's so many other contributing factors...

Holly crap that's a heavy drain. I couldn't possibly use this phone with that type.of battery drain. Thanks to our great dews I managed a little over 7h screen on time. Could only accomplish that by reducing the screen brightness and UC to 768mhz. Stick speed and auto brightness I get about 6-6 1/2 screen on.

You probably got a bad flash, or have something else running, as I mentioned in your recent thread.
Did you full wipe prior to flashing?
Try out gingerbeast, if you still have battery issues with that, after properly wiping prior to flashing of course, then it's hardware, as that ROM has produced some record-breaking battery life performance.
Mine has twice decided to randomly have days where it just drains like crazy. The battery is a lot warmer and just dies out in like 6 hours with very minimal usage. the majority of the time my battery is great but the last 2 days and then about a month ago it did this. No reason for it either, I have made no changes on my device.
Anybody seen this?

Yeah I did a full wipe before flashing. I'll be sure and try that out tomorrow, I really hope it helps. If the issue is hardware, should I contact HTC? After I believe you said my phone should still be under warranty, I called them, and indeed it is. The rep I had before must have been new or something. Thanks
From a full charge, on TPGB with wifi, gps, and sync on, and everything refreshed 3-4hrs, I lasted about 8 hours. I was using super accurate gps for 20 minute intervals or so, but it lasted the day I'd say. Some occasional web browsing.
Lucky for me my head unit on my car has a usb port. For this whole trip I left it off though.

And change back to the Sensation battery, it's actually better than the 3Ds. The Evo guys are using the Sensation battery and getting about 2hrs more in back to back tests. Be happy you don't have a 3D. When I had mine, I got 2hrs hard use with 4G and 4hrs with 3g. I get 8hrs with my Sensation overclocked.

Well for starters, your screen was on for almost 2 hours straight and your signal wasn't very good for most of that. I can assume that since your screen was on for 2 hours straight you must have been using it or the screen would not have been on that long. Streaming a 2 hour movie on a not so great connection will eat your battery up almost completely, especially if you are using full brightness. Android phones in general are battery eaters. My Sensation battery life is actually a lot better than my Vibrant was so I'm happy. Buy a couple batteries on Ebay for 15 bucks or use Juice Defender. I use my phone pretty heavily and can make it through the day. I can get over 24 hours using Juice Defender.
Did You wipe battery stats after change battery?
Also tell us which ROM and Kernel You use now. I'm sure that 3/4 ROM's here are useless. I have ROM from new leak and have 0 issues, also with battery.
I got two Anker 1900mAh batteries and they made a reasonable improvement to my use.
Typically with full sync and okish signal I got about 1h40m of screen on time with about 14 hours off charger.
With Anker under the same daily use its between 2h to 3h screen on in the same period.
Also that means I now have three batteries.
Sorry to say but having owned a Motorola Milestone, Galaxy S, Nexus S and now Sensation I can simply say that the battery life on Android is crap in general for heavy users.
My girl has an iPhone 3G and 4, the screen on time is often over 6 hours which I put down to intimate development of software and hardware.
I am choosing flexibility over longevity for now.

Did you calibrate or change radios recently? You could have a defective battery(s) or maybe the kernel is causing excessive drain.
I noticed this issue too when I was using Sense-based ROMs before I switched to a CM7-based rom.
Been off battery for 9 hours and 9 minutes with 77% left - I've never seen battery life this great and I don't think I see myself going back to Sense any time soon for my HTC Sensation 4G.
I was very disapointed with how fast the stock HTC Sensation battery drained even with normal use, just like you.
I took the advise from some here and got the Anker battery from Ebay for 10.00.
The best thing I ever did.
WOW! Did it improve the battery life on the Sensation.
Now I do not have to worry about the battery draining down fast on me.
With the Anker battery, my phone lasts all day and into the night .

Can we use that if i'm using hboot 2.00.002?
- firstly check to see what radio version are you using now?
- make sure your phone was rooted when calibrate battery. Is it rooted?
serious battery problem
OK, I have a serious problem. I updated official RUU, and my phone is running smooth. Battery lasts 1-2 days, everything is working fine. But last night battery was on 17% and I put it to charge at 12pm, woke up at 6am and it was on 33%. I'm charging it right now and it's up to 41% then drops to 39% and so on. Tried another charger - same thing. It won't charge! No new apps, no new settings, battery stats shows the same power use,.... Battery health is good, Auto sync is off,.... I have Go Power Master, Juice Defender, shows no problems. 3G is off, it's on GSM only, Wi-Fi is off, GPS is off and so on, my phone is fully optimised and this happened last night. I charged it while off and now it's on 37%! So I guess it's not a software issue. Anybody has an answer or a clue what could be the problem, please? Is my battery dead (year of use)? Thanks in advance.
try to restart your phone?
Tried that. I'm currently charging it power off, turned it on and it's still draining. While it's off!
i guess it's battery problem. Borrow another battery from your friend and try again.
Well, it was a strange thing... I've noticed that GO Power Master is killing like 25 apps and prolonging time for some 2 and a half hours when you hit optimise button every 2 minutes. So some apps are running in the back and draining the battery. So I uninstalled some of them (clock widget, Noom, Zoner antivirus,...) and restarted phone and by the end of the day it was all stabilised like before. I don't know what happened. I'm still testing it but I've managed to charge it to 100% and there was no drain over night. We'll see.

Noom
I have a S2 and every day, at 20:00 the phone starts a process and gets very hot and also drains the battery.
I discover that if I freeze the Noom app, it doesn't happen.
So, I blame noom for your draining issues and mine.
Does anybody else having this problem?
Regards
I didn't had a problem since uninstall, but it happened again later, I think it was from Firefox. While it was on charger, I got popup note saying something like "phone is using more than current can deliver, try to kill some apps or turn phone off while charging." First time I see that note. Probably because it was on Sense, not on launcher. I've noticed that Firefox is using a lot of memory, uninstalled it and it was all normal like before.

I had this problem, but svery time it was solved with rebooting. It showed normal percentage. I think, you just need to reboot device sometimes, may be once in two days. I suppose to think the couse of ghis problem is a kernel) it can be engaged with not an exact process, so battery drains. Try to change kernel, or rom, or battery)

WFS Battery drain when internet on, 5% a minute, the same on a new battery

Hi guys, I have a strange problem, may say I'm quite desperate about it, because I've been seeking for a solution, however with no result :/
I have HTC Wildfire S, it's about 13 months old, rooted 5 months ago. I did not install any custom roms or anything like that (it's still original 2.3.5). I rooted the phone only in order to get Link2SD.
Everything went smooth, I have been using my rooted WFS for about 4 months, however one day I fully charged it and disconnected about 10pm. Since then the phone was just lying on the table, 3G running (as always). GPS, bluetooth off, no new apps installed or anything to make battery life shorter. At 7am next day the battery was completely drained, so that the phone didn't even want to turn on.
Since then, everytime I turn the internet on, the battery drains like 5% every 4-7 minutes... When I additionally use Facebook or browse the Internet, it is up to 30% every 5 minutes:/
I bought a new battery, but it unfortunately didn't solve the issue, so I sent the phone back to the official service.
After one week i got it back, but they said that 'the issue didn't appear' (they've checked power consumption and battery).... That's obviously not true, because on the way back home from where I got the phone back (about 20 minutes ride) the battery level run down from 60% to about 35%....
I really have no idea what's going on, please help me, you're my last chance;p
Of course in the meantime I restored the factory settings, restored original rom, got rid of root etc., but with no result. Better battery stats showed that the difference between Awake and Screen on was normal, so the phone gets into deep sleep...
I may add that this battery drain percentage is not equal every time (sometimes it is 5% a minute, sometimes 15%). With the internet connection on the battery is being discharged in about 3-4 hours, however with it turned off it lasts normally (even up to 2-2,5 days).
Regards,
Karol
Battery life is like that. 3 n half hours is the average on most roms. 4.5 is highest I think.
Turn off all the settings u don't use/need to use. GPS, location service, pocket mode etc from sound, background data, from network always enabled mobile net, vibration on keyboard, UI so on.

It's not the topic like 'I just bought my first smartphone, I wonder why does it discharges faster than my nokia 3210". It is not my first smartphone, I know that 1-1,5 days is an absolute max for battery life, but in my case battery drain rastically arose during just a couple of hours...
With Internet on it always used to work for 1,5-2 days (with my use). My habits didn't change and now it lasts only 3-4 hours :/
It's really nothing out of the ordinary, if you keep 3G on at all times, you're not going to get more than 6-7 hours of scree-on time.
What you should verify is if it's heats constantly, because that'd mean you've got an app/process constantly running.
But for more than 8 months I've been using my phone exactly the same way and it was running at least the whole day with no effort... What should I check in Better Battery Stats? 3g was always turned on, however most of the time the phone was using EDGE/HSDPA, and so it is now.
Btw, Constant Connection (or how is it calldd in english) is turned off, as usual. Assuming that it really is the 3g issue, would turning 'gsm networks only' change something?

Don't compare Nokia's symbian with android. I never played Texas Holdem Poker of Facebook more than 4 hours, in any of the roms, with screen off its last longer about 10-12 I think, I tried keeping nimbuzz on. But I have to keep it charged closed to my laptop conditions I think, I have a extra stock battery.

I just wanted to say that I'm aware that smartphone battery is not able to keep to a couple of days... I really have no idea what's going on. I changed settings to GSM only and it seems that it helped a bit, but not much. At 2pm my phone's battery was 70% and now (11:30pm) it's still 30%. I will have to test this setting for a couple of days to see if it really helps...
Did u just put the phone on and that kind of battery drain happening? Then u need to change ROM.
If I put my phone on. Without keeping screen on, but mobile network on, it will last at least 1 day 24 hours I think. I am talking about keeping screen on playing/browsing. Screen on and internet uses most battery.

I use the original ROM, 2.3.5. When the issue appeared I have reflashed stock again, but it did nothing. I even got rid of root access, still the same. My phone was always working with internet on, and it lasted at least 24 hours. Now it lasts up to 2 days with the internet OFF, with on, it's only up to 6 hours, and if I additionally make use of internet connection (browse the web, send an email etc.), my phone lasts only up to 3-3,5 hours :/
I bought a new battery but it changed nothing...
Karolmd, a lot of people obviously didn't bother to read your original post and replied with rubbish answers.
I don't have an answer but at least I understand what you mean. Your battery life had changed drastically even though your usage is the same.
Does the problem occur when you move a few miles away from home, ie so you use a different mobile phone mast. Its possible your phone company has an issue in your area and the phone has to strain to keep a signal.
I've seen my phone struggle for a few days to get a 3g signal near my home when normally its fine and it was traced to a fault with the phone mast.
Does the issue happen if you switch off mobile internet and instead just use WiFi at home just to test this theory. This will show if something is perhaps connecting to the internet all the time or not. If battery is OK on WiFi I'd be inclined to place a call to the network operator. They can check the various masts in your area - it can take a while for them to acknowledge a problem though so you may need to keep pushing them.

Unfortunately the problem occurs everywhere:/ 60km's from my home, as well as 500 (I've checked last week). When I switch to GSM only, it seems that the battery lasts longer, but it's still not what it used to be...
Did any of your apps auto-update just before you noticed the drain ?

I don't really remember, but the problem occures even on a 'clean', newly flashed system....
Buy a new phone. Seems a internal problem, it drains really fast.

Ok, thanks guys for help... Seems I'm gonna start a war with the repair service... Regards!
Our phone battery is like that....U have to move on and don't expect battery life longer than 2 hrs when using internet over cellular network....I recommend using wifi over cellular network
Have you try BatteryCalibration from playstore ?

I recommend nt 2 use battery calibration...
I did it and after that I also faced battery issues earlier it use to last longer.........
Remove all the widgets from homescreen(//Very Important//). I was able to see the results.
Download these 2 apps from market...
1.Battery+(Just to look of the battery graph)
2.GSam Battery monitor(This can tell u what really is consuming ur device battery)
*#*#4636#*#* in dialer. Choose phone information and set to gsm only. That should help battery life. Try it out. If that helps click thanks
Remember when you reach full charged unplug. Boot into recovery and wipe battery stats. Reboot.
Then turn off auto sync and auto brightness.
