Hi,
I searched thorugh the forums but found no similar threads.
The video recording on my Samsung Galaxy SL i9003 has suddenly become very dark. The camera is perfect and the video recording used to be perfect as well and have a number of recorded 720x480 videos which are all bright and clear. I am not sure if this has happened because I upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.6 or because of an app because I've done a factory reset of the phone a number of times and it's still bad. I noticed that when I increase the resolution from 720x480 to 1280x720 it does get a bit better but it still useless for recording.
Can someone please help me.

Yes, It's better in 1280*720 but still recording was much better in froyo in low light areas as compare to xxkpn/xxkpq. Recording indoor with low light sucks big time in gingerbread.
this seems to be a bug in the camera on gb roms. I am seriously thinking to get back froyo 2.2.1

The problem with ddkp2 is lack of mods. I will happily shift to ddkp2 if mods like custom kernel, call recording etc are available. Hope there will be a camera mod available soon enough . One thing i don't understand is that there are so many users having GB but there are far less complaints of its buggy video recording.

Most users were /are desperate to have GB , for them higher version number matters most & they don't much bother about bugs.
I myself long ago requested that rom developers 1st find a stable rom which has least bugs & then root out the bugs & develop custom roms based on that stable rom.
true ! the camera does sum serious damage to the exposure and contrast :\ i couldnt even findmy friends face in a video i recoeded on new years night :\ dam man ! now i gotta try ddkp4 !
i have also the same problem dark video recording!
Same here. The video recording in low light areas is useless. Need a fix :/
same here man, had 2.2.1 before this update which had same problem
Can any1 fix problem ??
I tested this bug as I had indoor (same place) video shot with 2.2.1 xxkb3 versus with 2.3.6 ddkp2 & I can confirm that the brightness/contrast settings are not helping to get better or similar video in dark indoor lighting whereas daylight shots/video are fine.
I wish this problem can be addressed.
today i upgraded my sl i9003 from 2.2.1 froyo to 2.3.6 gingerbread,it also have the same problem.
Camera is completely dark and Video is recording is darker than that.
Any solution guys?

What do you mean by continuous autofocus?
continuous auto focus is indeed available on i9003 I shoot tons of video last 6 months with this phone, what problem are you having?

Well, ron has a point firstly, this section has been given our own development and general unlike the previous section, So please request your queries in the general section from now on. Also ron has had his share of people who constantly avoid reading the rules so you may have to not bear your fangs at him for that.
The stock video doesn't autofocus btw. But you can pinch to zoom. So far the stock recorder isn't reliable? On a certain level the audio becomes fuzzy like trying to record a concert or festival would make the audio inaudible and annoying. But ofcourse no one uses their phone for such festives. You may need to research since the camera.apk from SonyE is driver dependent and not compatible with ours. Maybe CM7 version fixes this. Also you haven't mentioned what firmware you are on, that's your biggest mistake

stock video indeed autofocus have you ever shot video with it by changing subject distance? if yes then the camera automatically adjust focus distance that's called continuous autofocus, this requires certain light level else auto focus will fail that might be the reason OP complained.
Try shooting in daylight with 4 feet distance from subject now suddenly go closer to 1feet, the camera will auto focus to 1feet distance, now further go to 4 inch distance & camera will auto focus in macro mode, now come back to 4 feet it will again adjust the focus ...............hope its clear, at least my camera does & I have shot 1000s of video with this phone, truly amazing hd quality, sound is not of pro quality & the pinch to zoom is in reality cropping the video thus lowering the resolution.
@sgsl, Hmm I never knew that, Thanks for the info Most of the times I had to do the manual focus. The standard zoom just shows everything by default. Maybe it was because I was on Froyo when I did most my recording, Haven't done so in the GB series. Wonder if it's a new feature. Regardless, Thanks.
I am talking about froyo only last 6 months have been on xxkb3, just 2 days ago I updated to xxkpm, nothing has changed in GB the camera has always been like that.
Moreover manual focus you are talking about is only in still camera, in video cam you cant do any thing to focus, the cam does on its own.
First of all, stock video does auto-focus. Secondly, OP needs a hard lesson on gumption. Please post in the correct section *facepalm*

True story LOL
I'm on froyo, and the video recoder indeed autofocus during recordering.
I've been running CM7, MIUI and Weapon for a while, but i've noticed that the front camera gets REALLY dark, but only if i'am in a dark place, I know that sounds stupid, but when I flashed 2.2.2 or 2.3.4 the pictures with FFC becames MUCH more clear and with more light in the same place!!
One more thing, did anybody notice that the led flash in 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 do like 3 flashes and takes more time to shoot??
Is there a way to fix any of this bugs? I prefer the MIUI camera over the 2.3.4 camera but it's MUCH more darker when I don't have much light in the ambient.
Thanks in advance, sorry for beeing noob....
Please, nobody can tell me if this is a issue with just me, or, if everybody is having it??
And if there is a way to fix it...
I haven't seen any one with this issue, I don't use the front facing camera myself. My only guess would be to try the Bravia mod, maybe it can take care of the issue.

I now this could seem stupid, but is the glass over the camera clean? That can effect light exposure. Also if you are using the MIUI Camera is the brightness setting at low?
The back camera it's very good actually, the only problem is the front, I usually use to chat with my girl while i'am in the computer (as I don't have a webcam I use the g2x), the ambient where i'am is little dark, just have the light of computer, but when I use the 2.3.4 version the video chat gets REALLY clear and good, but with MIUI and CM7 the video chat becomes very dark (camera too).. :/ thats sucks because I like MIUI over all roms but the front camera gets reeeeeally dark in some places....
Please guys help me, I use front camera all the time :// really that no one is having the problems I'am having?
What I think it's weird is that the official 2.3 front camera is very dark in ambients with little light....anyone know how to fix it?
Just 2.2 and 2.3.4 don't have that bug.

I think that is because 2.2 is using the LG Cam interface which is a lot better than the 2.3.3 stock software. There is not fix at this time.

Thanks for the tips, guys, but the problem still here... I really don't know what the causes, and it's not the lg cam, because when I use 2.3.4 I have really good light in front camera even with the aosp camera, I'm gonna keep using miui and just deal with the problem, cause miui > all (for me)

Again it is built into the software of the Gingerbread 2.3.3 version only. It can not be fixed, it has been tried but will not work. Froyo 2.2 and Gingerbread 2.3.4 use different cam software even though they are stock aosp on 2.3.4.
Thanks man, gonna try to deal with this for a while, cause I thinks the back camera in 2.3.4 it's very dark, so I'm just use my miui and be happy

It's a damn hard problem to fix. If you think about it it's a deep down driver level issue that requires a pretty broad skill base to diagnose and fix. Years of coding experience to understand yet alone begin to fix it... It doesn't help that this isn't supported by Samsung nor the camera developer.
So it's incredible that the damn thing even turns on. I'd say Entropy and jt are smart enough to fix it in time though

Here's the fix for 720p recording.
I am also torn over the missing 720p recording, but I am still incredibly happy with JB! The only other major issue is the banding I get in photos, although someone had mentioned that possibly JB changed the shutter/refresh speed in the camera which produces the banding under fluorescent lighting conditions. Unfortunately I saw nowhere to manually adjust this.
The other major issue was the darn thing disconnecting from Bluetooth in my Toyota Entune system, but supposedly version 2.12 and the OC V2 Kernel fix the issue. Will be testing it out today.
I get the same lighting effect on my pics as well. Paranoid Android, is working flawlessly. Besides 720 and other issues, its a great rom, and good on battery life.
Everything is almost fixed, so we might get lucky w/ 720

I just wanted to update and say that the banding lines I was receiving seem to be isolated to a specific building at my university. I am guessing the JB Rom somehow changed the shutter rate setting and in doing so it introduced a "flicker" banding line effect due to the fluorescent lighting in the building. If I go outside, or to other buildings with fluorescent lighting it does not do this, so the bulbs in the original building must be perfectly attuned to a rate that interferes with the imaging sensor.
I haven't found a way to tweak or fix this issue, but as long as photos in most other lighting and outside are fine I am alright with it.
Please try this out and let me know if this is also your issue.

Hey ya guys!
I'm facing a weird problem lately with my Sensation.
If i want to record a video with the camcorder (no matter the resolution) the camera seems to zoom in a notch and then the recording starts. When i'm switching back to camera (photo) it zooms that notch out again.
I've tried various ROMs (AOSP, CM9, CM10, Sense 3.6, 4, 4.1 etc) but it doesn't seem to be ROM related...
Now to rule out that im not totally being mental, i grabed the HTC One V of my girlfriend and tested it - all went fine, video recording without zooming in first...
Has anybody encountered the same problem? Is there something i can do to fix it?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!
Have you tried disabling the 'auto focus' (untick it) in the camera setting??

This is normal and has to do with the electronic image stabilization which needs to reserve some out-of-screen pixels to work.
@ zeru150r
Did that, didn't help...
@ patspdaphone
Are you sure? If so then i don't have to worry...
Only thing is i don't recall it to be that way...
I've just understood what you're trying to say, and in my opinion that is not a problem, just like what @patspdaphone said.
I'm having that "problem" too in my sensation.
Cool then!
The whole thing got me upset cause it came just now to my attention...after a whole year with the Sensation....
Thanks a bunch, guys!!!
thanks
Hello to all. Got my Galaxy Tab 2 P3110 8gb on Monday and found a little problem in it: when I leave at minimum brightness and energy saving mode, in other words, when I leave the screen darker, I see the whole screen with brightness oscillation, increasing and decreasing, is very light but it is annoying. It does not occur when the brightness is higher. To illustrate: it is almost like a lamp burning. To perceive you need to stare at the screen, fixedly. Anyone have any suggestions other than the exchange of the product? Any change in the frequency of refresh of the screen, whatever ... Thanks everyone and sorry for English Google Translator lol

In the dark gray menu of Youtube's app you can see very well the oscillation even at full brightness.. OMG, is terrible =(
hay, since your device is new try to get a new one without this defect ( this could be a hardware bug too ).. I ve read many complaints about this low brightness flicker issue specially with Nexus 7 .. anyway I ll try to downgrade back to 4.1.1 (or upgrade it to 4.3) next week and let you know ..
