More tethering issues - Samsung Infuse 4G

So I gave into the emails and texts and finally called AT&T and upgraded to the 4GB Data Pro. When I had my Captivate running Serendipity I tethered all the time and nothing was ever said. I got my Infuse running Infused ROM and almost imediately got texts from AT&T.
Anyhow, I use a ton of data and got tired of fighting the issue. Just another $20 out of my pocket and no more drama. Does anyone actually know what they are looking at to notice that the phone is being tethered even rooted, no bloatware, and custom ROM?

Here's something I posted in another thread about my experience with a tethering SMS from AT&T and the subsequent call to them...
I just got a text message from AT&T letting me know I'd automatically been switched over to a tethering plan since I was still tethering. The rub here is I have not tethered my phone a single time in the last 3 months! I actually have a 2GB plan on my old Captivate that I've been using. I called into AT&T and the lady I got was really cool. She said there must be something triggering the tethering alert on their side and she filed an extension for me so I wouldn't get switched over automatically.
So, I don't know what AT&T is really using to detect tethering, but it's indeed throwing out false positives. I've also only used 809MB since the beginning of my billing cycle (November 21), so I doubt very much that it's excessive data usage. I use some interesting things like wifi connected file managers and remote web desktop, but surely those don't trigger it (?).

At one point in the call she asked me if I was running the latest software update. I told her I don't run AT&T software on my phone, and I replaced it with a custom image. Oddly enough, she didn't say anything about that.
Clearly you do tether your phone, and it was probably right that they detected you doing so. I just wonder what's got them incorrectly flagging accounts...

I tried a few shots with wifi tether 3.1 on DlevROM or Bionix (should be one of them) to open several web pages on my laptop. As I am on the 200M plan, so I didn't use it heavily. So far I haven't got message form AT&T yet. Hopefully that helps.

From what I've read, they've been detecting tethering by user agents in browsers, and you could give a false positive by selecting to show desktop in a browser that supports different user agents. There's a thread somewhere named "AT&T Wised Up" that explains all this

Yeah, that'd do it. I've got my VPN in full effect, and now I actually am going to tether over it. At least if they try to change me next time, they'll have a little more valid reason for it!

On the 200m plan, please don't scream outrage when they catch you or you go over your limit.

That's wierd. I've been on infused up to a week ago, and never got a warning about tethering. I used my phone as a mobile hotspot as well. I was averaging 1500 mb a cycle.
I wonder what they use to detect it?

Okay. For example. If I use my mobile ap for tethering on my infuse phone with a custom rom , I goto my mac and connect to it and download approx 900mb file. Should that be okay?

download the myatt app and watch your usage. if you are on an unlimited plan and go above 2.5gb, they may accuse you of tethering. just call em and tell em off. if you are on froyo, you can easily be ratted out by tether manager, so delete that. i dont know if any gingerbread leaks have a more native carrier entitlement check, but i know that cm7 and miui are safe to tether. if you get harassed by att without evidence, atleast pretend to be outraged.
browser useragent strings are not evidence of tethering. android makes it easy to change the useragent to desktop, or ipad, or many other options to increase website compatibility. i have yet to see anybody being accused based on that but i believe that viewing usage this close is a violation of privacy. not only that, but in any case where encryption is used, such as https, this is considered an expressed request of privacy on the part of the user.

I just had my infuse for less then a month. I rooted and deleted the tethering files. I haven't got any text from att for tethering. I tether with my laptop around 1 gb almost end of the month

I use this "beta" tethering app and do about 300-400 mb downloads at times. idk if you guys wouldl ike to try it out ill share it. couldnt find anything good in the market.

Wifi tether is an awesome app. Just keep in mind it uses adhoc to tether, and that doesn't work [natively] with all devices you might try to connect to it.
For those that don't know, here's the link to the Google Code site for the app attached in the previous post. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

I take it that WIFI Tether is not supported on MIUI/CM7?

what is the Best way to tether my android without paying extra?

I just got the verizon fascinate, and cancelled my home phone and internet. what is the best way to tether it so i can surf the web on my home PC. i am looking to avoid the charges of using the hotspot feature from verizon.
any help would be greatley appreciated..

If you tether and use heavily, you'll be noticed. I'm not sure if PDANet is available to Verizon Android users (Much like we t-mo guys can't have skype default install from market...), but look it up.

Well... In reality, it's not what I consider heavily, it's verizons perception of heavy usage...
If you're going to browse the web for four hours, maybe send a few e-mails and pull forty-five songs from Miley Cyrus, that may look a little suspicious.
The beauty of me using T-mobile and vanilla Android on my Nexus one is the ability to tether "for free" through Settings -> Wireless and so on. They send me texts/emails/letters sometimes regarding my data usage and say that they throttle me back until the next billing cycle. I see no large performance degradation though.
Wow I've never gotten a notice. They tell me they can't track my usage cause it's unlimited. Consider this heavy I tether every night and sometimes use xbox live. I also download lots of roms and have played mmos.

what do you guys average for data usage?
AT&T wishes they never offered UNLIMITED DATA PLANS!
Well I got the C&D order letter using BARNACLE of course I played dumb and called to retain my unlimited plan....
So I had to add tether on another phone my lady has which was not on unlimited.
Simple solution LOL when I have a large file I send the url to my Atrix with unlimited data plan then download that massive file on the unlimited plan phone.
Once done downloading I simply transfer the file as if it were USB attached storage or pull the SD etc.. but that is NOT TETHERING and I still get the files I wish...... GOTCHA AT&T!! Oh and of course since you NOW have rules about content downloaded I abide and only download what is permissible (ie. purchased music etc....) I hit 105GB this last cycle and plan on even more this month.
AT&T is a horrible company when it comes to ethics and morals..... they LIE alot!

Ha!!! This is so far from the truth I can't help but laugh....
1. pdanet has a feature to keep your carrier from noticing your usage called "hide tether usage'
2. I used my phone for 4 days straight when my internet went out due to bad weather....I streamed dozens of movies, downloaded music, browsed, sent emails, and I even downloaded Uncharted 3...all while tethered. I have yet to get any letters/emails/calls/texts from sprint telling me to stop using so much data....and I don't use the 'hide tether usage' option.
3. there are rumors that carriers CAN'T see your tethered usage from and android...they can only monitor iphones. I have yet to see hard evidence one way or the other, but it's been said many times that no carrier can monitor android usage to the point of knowing whether it's tethered or not.
Interesting read about PDAnet & verizon android devices

They can tell by the OS on the phone I believe as they had the dates I tethered..

[Q] Enable Tethering on AT&T HTC One X

Anyone with the AT&T HTC One X been able to find a way to enable tethering?
I know that Roger users get tethering enabled for free, unfortunately AT&T doesn't give us the same courtesy in the US.
I found this trick listed for enabling Tethering on the Galaxy Nexus that works on non-rooted devices.
"Elixer 2
Pros: Free
Cons: Confusing to setup at first
1. Install Elixer2
2. Install Elixer2 Widgets
The way I think this works is, you need to install Elixer2 to give you tons of tools and information about your device, so that the widgets work correctly.
Elixer2 Widgets gives you widget tools to create widgets for your device.
You can create a "Wi-Fi AP (Hotspot) toggle" widget that turns on Portable Wifi Hotspot. Doing this bypasses the wireless carrier check, and allows you to modify your AP settings to create a Hotspot."
I was curious if anyone knows if the Elixer 2 trick works on the AT&T HTC One X too?
Or perhaps someone else has been able to figure out another way since there isn't a root method available yet for the HTC One X.
Tasker widget might be able to do this as well.

You can tether on any device. Just install the right app or root. However, within a few hours to a few months, att will see and give you a warnign to stop tethring. If you continue, they auto-upgrade you to a tethering line. There is no way to go around it.

That is not true that they will eventually detect. I have been using tethering for a while on my iPhone and it hasn't been detected. It all has to do with that you need to make sure to use the right APN.

That's what custom ROM's are for. I don't abuse tethering, I do it occasionally and have never received any type of warning from ATT. Proper custom ROM's remove all kinds of traceable software back to the carriers. (e.g. CM9)

I am very aware that with a custom ROM or even a root app like Wifi Tether that you can easily enable tethering. However, I am trying to find out if there is a solution to get it working if you are not rooted.
Right now there is no custom ROMs or even a root for the AT&T HTC One X so the custom ROMs or even Wifi Tether are not an option. So back to my original question does anyone know if Elixer 2 or Tasker work for enabling tethering on the HTC One X?

I understood that, sorry for side stepping on the topic. I got caught up answering that there is a way around the carrier knowing about your tethering.
I don't know how much similarity between HTC's tethering code and Samsung's tethering code, I tried your apps mentioned above on my Samsung GS2 running latest AT&T ICS leak and it didn't work. It does bypass the account checking but there is no internet connection from the tethered devices what so ever. The new tethering code for these Samsung devices in ICS leaks are much difficult to bypass now than the ones in GB.
We will know it once we have AT&T HOX in hand.
This is the easiest solution that works on all android devices.

Just as an update, the Rogers RUU is online now, you can find it in the DEV section. Those who wanna attempt to flash its boot.img and system.img to an AT&T phone, knock yourselves out!
Not saying it's gonna work necessarily...
Easy Tether always worked for me. It uses the Android debugging mode. You need to use USB but whatever. Totally worthwhile (costs about $10 one time fee) and I'm not sure how they would detect this. IF they gave you a hard time you could simply explain that you develop Android apps and that you're not tethering. They may buy that.
When tethering is enabled through the device via normal means, then I think they would know about it...But if you're going through the debugger, I just can't see how they would know.
If they ever did or worse yet, IF any carrier is collecting data about user agents, etc. to see if you're using a desktop browser...Then I think that's a severe privacy concern.
I would hope anyone getting a warning from a carrier would because they have a rooted phone and they have the actual tethering system feature enabled for which the operating system likely sends up some sort of flag to notify the carrier (hence why people are saying it depends on what ROM you're using). OR because of their usage patterns, ie. heavy usage in short periods of time. A phone can only have so many browser tabs open and use so much data in a short period of time. They have this stuff down to a science.
However...If you're tethering to check your e-mail, browse a little, do work, and like me...build web sites and what not from Starbucks (because their free WiFi doesn't allow you to use SSH) then I really can't imagine you'd get an angry letter.
Again, this is all speculation...I use Sprint and never had an issue. However, come Sunday I will be switching to AT&T for the better looking HTC One X...Oh right and for the working 4G. Despite half the storage space.
Elixir 2/Widgets does not work on my ATT HOX for the mobile AP. I still get the "call 611 to enable tethering" popup.
Has anyone tried Foxfi from the market?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
FoxFi does not support wifi for any HTC phones, only Bluetooth (as stated in-app).
Foxfi keeps giving me some cryptic error message "fail to open bluetooth". Being unable to root / tether and downgrade from 32gb to 16gb (and in actuality 9.96 gb) is really pissing me off...
Edit: Easy Tether works. Just using the free version so far, no issues yet. Will know more extensively in the next few days.

[Q] Got violation of terms warning text on Simple Mobile?

So Im running Simple Mobile Unlimited $60 plan. And I've recieved this text:
Your Simple Mobile Data service is at risk of being suspended due to violation of terms and conditions. Call ***-***-**** for additional information.
Lately I've tethered a couple of times because I used my ps3 to connect to the phone to play COD Zombies, so I'm assuming thats why. Has anyone else experienced this?
So far they havent suspended anything but i was under the impression that it was unlimited data if in fact this is the reason why i got this text in the first place.
Any way around this if i choose to continue doing it? I dont see what the big deal is. If or when they suspend you, do you lose your number? I had this number for years. Can you get hooked back up? Not sure what thia is all about, thanks guys.

How do I change the user agent? What is a vpn?
If you were using a computer, changing the user agent would be telling the server that your not using Chrome (like I am right now), but on an Android phone.
But since this is your PS3, you would need a VPN set up. For that, you need to do some research because you're no longer on the right website for troubleshooting that.
Ok well besides for all this, i have absolutely no service at this point. I called simple mobile and explained the problem and the whore agent said please hold and gave me the tos recording and it hung up after. I called back and explained the situation again and they said my service is still active and they dont know why it is saying no service. I did research that they only turn off data, but i have nothing. They said usually you get 3 text message warnings and then they only turn off data. But again they said nothing is suspended at this point, so wtf?
My plan expires july 9th. So im wondering if i reup, would everything go back to normal? If not, what are my options? I dont want to lose my number that i had for years and i dont want to lose $60 to reup if it is still this same issue. Im pissed and stumped at this point.

At&t letter for tethering, best way to resolve?

So I got my letter from ATT the other day saying that they have detected tethering software on my phone and that if I dont remove it by 12/31/12 they will automatically bump me up to the 5GB tethering plan for $50/mo
Whats the best way to resolve this and still be able to run custom roms? Ideally I would still like to be able to tether for free (obviously) but at the very least just be able to not pay the $50/mo and still run custom roms.
I spoke with a customer service rep and told her I had no idea how to tether and asked if they could just put a block on it or something, and she said no, the software has been detected and it has to be removed.
Maybe I should call back and ask for supervisor?
Alternatively she said if I go into the att store and they can look at my phone and see that there is no tethering software, they can make a notation on my account.
So I suppose I could unroot, go into att store, have them note the account, and then root again.... that would probly be my last resort.
Thanks in advance for any help!
No, you do understand the second you tether they can detect it right? They also aren't idiots and can tell if you're running a custom ROM as well
I've heard about Verizon reps commenting about custom ROMs before
So you flashing back to stock and showing them there's nothing on the phone does nothing.
If you don't want to be charged then stop
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk 2
I disagree, because if they make a notation on the account and they have proven that they can't find any programs or software to remove when I bring the phone into the store, then there is no way they can charge me.
But even if I didnt want to tether (which I have not tethered in quite a while and still got the letter) it would see to me that they are detecting the software (rom) and seeing that I have the ability to tether, so how do I run a custom rom (and not tether) and still not get charged?

They wouldn't make a notation on the account because tethering is possible with the stock software, there's quite a few apps on the market that allow this. So you could just uninstall it.
You didn't get the letter because of the custom ROM, you got it because you violated your contract by tethering. It may have taken them some time to send out the letter.
They have detected it so they will be watching for future violations
So my suggestion stays the same, stop tethering or pay for it
Pretty simple
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk 2
What Phil said although you may not agree with att's rules on tethering...its in the contact and you signed to it so you will get taken off your plan and to the 5gb plan if you continue
Gotcha, thanks for the input guys.
I am fairly new to ATT (came from Sprint)
Does this apply to wired tethering as well? Does someone using wired tether (such as pdanet) still have to pay, or is that free?
The way I think they catch people is # of hops it does to terminate data and packet sniffers so I'd just stay away even though pda may be a bit safer will LTE around theyre hunkering up
For the sake of mentioning this--its a topic which has been raked over in every phone forum, Android, Apple etc nd tablets too.
Doing a general and specific search on the Net seems to point to mostly theory. When I owned my previous iPhones and jailbroke, I used MyWi. However, the devs made it clear you could be caught.
That notion aside-many of us and this includes me, believe it comes down to being abusive with the tethering. Of course many would disagree but if you cared to specifically search iPhone sites and focused mostly on AT&T, it somewhat became clear they knew we were tethering since algorithms change when tethering. In conjunction, we also surmised they went after people who had unlimited data plans and really used the heck out of it.
I personally have tethered many times and many people I know too but we didn't use it too long. I've never gotten a notice from ATT but it doesn't mean they aren't watching. Not be be a jerk but your op is a topic I've seen literally hundreds of times. Everyone claims the same thing but no one seems to admit they abuse it. They noticed you for a reason is what it comes down to. I should also mention I've tethered my HOX as well.
In my personal opinion I believe we should be able to get a free amount of gigabytes to tether. Once over it, then you get charged. This is just a real touchy subject.
These are just my opinions.
Jon
ViperXL 2.4.0 w/ElementalX 3.1 kernel
I tethered without a tethering plan for years, first on my jailbroken iPhone and then on my HOX until I switched to the Mobile Share plans that include tethering. I never got caught, but I was also very careful not to abuse it by, for example, streaming video, moving large files, or doing things that a phone would never do untethered like updating my laptop's software.
I am convinced, from watching this issue over the years, that AT&T does two things: They mainly go after the data hogs, flagging people for tethering detection when they get close to or over their data caps; they also run spot checks on random accounts. Detecting tethering, should you get their attention, is dead simple, by the way. There are any number of ways to confirm it.
Once you're on their radar screen, the jig is up. Your only choices are to stop tethering or get a tethering plan.

I'm assuming you are using Google Chrome? I am using this setup currently and I'm receiving desktop requests for every site I visit, nothing looks like a mobile version of a site at all.
* Download User-Agent Switcher For Chrome
* Select SAFARI -> Mac Safari 7
* Surf as usual.
Let me know. I'm using this setup as we speak and it looks like normal. Please be specific in your response.

yeah i use chrome. but the thing is i want to know WHY all of a sudden this is happening. i have been doing this for months now and i have not had to do a desktop request until yesterday. like i said it would let me saerch certain stuff and even let me go into the sites but in others it would do the desktop request. anything going on with this?????? did my tether_dun_required run out some how. is there a way around this.

I'm on T-Mobile too. T-Mobile starts looking for accounts that have an unusually high amount of traffic. They look at the user-agent, and if its a known desktop one, it'll auto-route to the upsell page. So to get around it, using a user-agent not on the t-mobile upsell routing list will allow you to continue as normal.
Proof of this, my cycle reset, I removed the user agent, and I was fine until I hit about 45gb in two days, then I got the upsell again. Kicked the user-agent back in gear (Safari -> Mac Safari 7) and I can tether as usual.
Even though we have tether_dun_required set to 0 making it look like traffic is coming from our phone, there is a "conflict of interest" what is being reported vs user-agent being used.
Hope that makes sense.

New cycle in terms of my billing period for t-mobile (when they capture amount of data used, minutes, and texts). Yeah, IE is flagged as desktop browser, you'll get an upsell page for sure. Doesn't matter if you have a custom rom or rooted. At the end of the day, unless you use VPN to encryt the data transferred, simply looking at the user-agent of your browser is enough to trigger the upsell. Did Safari work for you and are you seeing the sites as usual?

Sounds good. We're here for you; good luck my friend.
Boot
Tmobile should give serious abusers the boot
100gb??? Jesus. I'm sorry to say but it is users like you that make carriers want to keep our phones locked down. There is nothing wrong with tethering when in a pinch, and maybe using <5gb of data /month but 100gb is just outright abuse. If you are using your phone as your primary data connection, then you should be paying for a tethering plan.
