Hi,
I dropped my phone and the screen is cracked now. Everything else works perfectly fine. I want to send it to HTC repair but problem is my phone is rooted with a custom ROM installed.
Will HTC object/fine/put extra charge on my if they see the phone does not have official software inside? Anyone has any experience about this? Advice?
I can restore the first back up I created(stock rom) but I dont know how to S-off and dont really want to go into S-offing.
What should I do? Do I must need to S-off and restore stock ROM?
Advice please!

It is unlikely you'll be charged extra as it will be going to their hardware repair department for a screen replacement, not the technical department for a warranty issue.
If you are unlucky though, they may check, make a note of the serial number, and keep it on record in case you make a claim in the future.
If you wanted to play it safe flash an RUU.

this is a list of RUUs. Be sure to choose the right one. I've never done this before so can't help you out anymore but I'm sure you'll find plenty of guides on Google.

Hi dan-fish:
I am in rooted stock ROM and S-OFF.. If I update the official update from HTC, would it brick the phone? What would be the impact after the update?
I wouldn't recommend it. You'd loose root, the official one has some bugs, and some have serious problems like stuck at white HTC screen or power button not working.
If you want the Android 2.3.5 Sense 3.0 experience, there are rooted stock roms, or slightly tweaked ones available. These are much less likely to cause you problems, and you'll keep root and s-off. Win win.

Thanks very much WNP. I am thinking of flashing back my first backup (the one I did while rooting my phone) and then send my phone away.
Flashing the first back up will have official t mobile 2.3.3 and sense 3.0 if I am not wrong. And I will send it away. Hope I don't get screwed up!

If the screen was damaged accidentally, then how are HTC willing to cover it? I have separate accidental damage cover that I pay for monthly, and an insurance company manages the claim while the Network cover the replacement at a small cost.
Recently my HD2 micro-usb port wouldn't work at all, and so I sent it away under my extra monthly cover. It was rooted and had Android on but was still covered as it was considered physical damage, not technical. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

i tried to unroot my sensation 4g but i cant get s back on so if i upgrade it will it damage my phone? and will i be able to root it again if i want to with sense 3.5.
you can just download a non stock rom with sense 3.5, since you already rooted your phone.
But I don't want to root my phone. I want to unroot it 100% so I can send it in for warranty but I still have s off for some reason I can't get that process to work when I try to turn it back on. So I just wanna know can I upgrade to 3.5 with s off? And will I be able to root again later on if I upgrade.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Then no you can't get Sense 3.5 as it's not even released yet. The custom ROMs are based on a LEAKED test RUU and chances of it actually being officially released are slim at present
As it stands, you're S-OFF so you're still not in warranty so you may as well flash a custom 3.5 ROM and be done with it
I have to send my phone in for warranty tho.

This thread hurts my brain. U need to be s-on to send it in for warrenty exchange. So if your s-off they will not accept the warrenty exchange.there is no sense 3.5 for our phones officially and probably never will bbecause once we get updated to ice cream sandwich. That is going to run a new sense version 4.0

A guy told me some people have sent there's back with s off and warent caught. And he said people have bricked there phones trying to get s back on. Idle why to do its seems like a huge risk both ways. Idk wtf to do I should have never rooted my phone.

Rooting your phone is the best thing u can do for your phone.it makes all the slowness of sense go away and there are multiple guides on how to unroot and turn s back on Wich if followed correctly will not brick your phone.

And who cares if you brick your phone just send it in saying it won't turn on after u had an update for it. They have no way of knowing for sure

Bro I care I don't want to brick my phone plus I just restored my sensation to stock other than still have s off and it isint laggy at all.

Mate just S-on your phone and S-off it again when you get it back, it is really easy to do.
I stayed stock but only because I aint got around to doing it yet, the battery is killing me know though, only getting half the life that I was with Mikes ROM.
Ok So back in the day I used the ace hack kit so I was happily on froyo me specs are:
Android Version 2.2.1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.21-g3c08447
Software Number Inspired DHD AFR003
so now as I remember I did the s-off rooted and unlocked but need to go back to stock firmware (IDK just want it) so att made the update to gingerbread so my question is:
If I update like the way the htc page tells me to will it brick my phone ?
and if not what do I have to do?
ive just been out of it and im a little back behind but I find posts with other things than this thanks in advance guys!
Check out this thread.

It has all the instructions and tools you need to return to stock.
but I cant just execute the htc update and what would happen my main concern is messing up my phone by just updating to the official Gingerbread I am on still on the same specs
Yes you can just flash the gingerbread ruu. You will be stock but still have soff which is fine unless you were going to do some kind of warranty claim then I would suggest gong son aswell

Do you mean the OTA update, or the RUU from HTC's website? If the former, then no, you can't unless you are running a rock-stock froyo ROM (it will abort before doing anything). If the latter, then yes, you can run it, but it will wipe everything.

thats the file I really dont care of the features I use im just wondering if i'll mess up my phone plus I just want to know what ill keep and what ill lose in terms of the s-off and I know ill lose the unlock

Flashing ghe htc OTA update while you are S-Off will not work. Found this out the hard way back when I first started messing with phones
You can un root your phone and put S-On and update it to gingerbread but I don't think you'll be able to root it as I believe the hack kit requires you to downgrade firmware anyway.
Best bet is to just flash a gingerbread rom. If your trying to keep sense I would suggest the rom virtuous unity.
Has sense 3.0 with a load of new features and is gingerbread I believe.
Either way, best of luck. Hope this helps

My wife has a Mytouch 4G slide that has never been rooted and has all the latest updates from T-Mobile. I keep reading conflicting information with regard to whether this is a problem (the whole s-off/s-on thing).
I was thinking of trying out one of the Ice Cream Sandwich Roms. Can I root her phone? Should I root her phone? Is there a link with good current information?
just to sum it up:
with the latest OTA you cannot achieve s-off (yet), however, you can unlock the bootloader and then root and flash recovery and roms using the official htcdev unlocking method (which apparently voids your warranty instantly)

No.
The unlocker is currently broken for (most) people.
It only voids your warranty if any damage results from anything you flash. Flash an OC kernel and burn up your phone, not their fault. Keyboard falls apart due to use, their fault.
The confusion continues - is there not a "root your mytouch 4g slide wiki" with current information?

there is, but in a sense that info is not 100% current.... those tools won't work if her phone is S-ON with HBOOT 1.45.0013(software version 1.55.531.3).
keep an eye out tho for news on another update that is supposed to make the official HTC unlocker tool work by the end of the month
I wanna get my hands on another to see if I can duplicate the 2 I unlocked

This is a great question seeing how my mt4gs will be here tomorrow lol.
I'm coming from an htc g2 and have been free from security for awhile! I really want an aosp rom (not a big fan of sense) so this should be interesting!
Been reading up for the last couple of days and the dev support seems a little lacking, but the g2 started to slow as well, though there were plenty of stable roms.

From what I've read, HTC is aware of the Unlocker not properly unlocking the MT4GS. All we can do now is wait since Revolutionary hasn't figured out a method to replace the 1.45.0013 HBOOT yet.

Doesn't matter if it's a hardware or software issue. If you mod your phone in any way, the warranty is void, unless you revert back to stock. Even if it's just a software mod, like a custom rom or kernel.

Incorrect. Read HTC's unlock disclaimer. It will only void the warranty if It's damage you caused by flashing something. Normal hardware issues are still covered as the original warranty would do.
And I got the phone... It came with the 1.55

Will HTC change my phone version because I sent it in for warranty repair? Didn't even know what version it had before I sent it in, because the phone wouldn't power on.
You wouldn't think they would. But then again they might try and get it all the way up tp date before sending it back out. Good question.

They say that any devices that come to them will be shipped out again with the most recent software on them.
I recently had to send one of mine in, it came back as it was when I sent it out - but the current OTA is on pause so that may be why.
I think at this stage it would be a dice roll...

Well it's better to send it in sooner, rather than later.
Besides, my device wouldn't turn on at all anyway, so I didn't really have a choice.
Hoping they don't update it though.
Is there any way I can call them and tell to not update it, if possible?
Hi there people, firstly I would like to thank all the devs and xda users out there that have helped me in the past. Xda all the way.
Right, I have a proplem. I currently have a HTC sensation and more or less know everything there is to know about how it works, rooting, installing rims etc, as I have done this plenty of times before. When I bought the phone secondhand it was unlocked although still branded to Vodafone. I pushed it to the max with mods and upgrades but then came a hardware fault. Not sure what it was so sent it to HTC. I received it back good as new and was able to mod it again Luke before... One more hardware fault meant sending it off again. This time I received it as good as new, but now the bootloader is locked...and before you say anything, I have run the official htcdev unlock but no luck. Unlock token check keeps failing. I would like to root so I can install Roms and kernels as the stock os is really slow and I don't even need the HTC sense. I had it overclocked to 2ghz before, with the xe Rom with beats. Was great, but now I can't do anything... If anyone out there knows what to do, please let me know because I know a lot of people are having the same problem... It's due to a motherboard replacement or something that wasn't originally intended for unlocking so not on some list...

Your motherboard has been replaced.
HTC Dev unlock does not support the new motherboards.
Check your IMEI, it should have changed with the change in the motherboard.
Now, if you do want to enjoy all the benefits of having an unlocked bootloader, I can suggest an appropriate method if your can provide the details of your Hboot.
Yh I guessed that may have been the problem... My hboot is 1.27.. I now have s-off after countless attempts with juopunutbear, and wire trick... But I'm still not completely happy.. I havemy custom recovery and rooted Rom but I still can't use custom kernels for oc, etc.. any suggestions???
